This December episode of the Fully-Booked podcast is one of those free-for-all episodes where we cover anything we like, without a specific theme. This week's discussion is about upcoming 2025 book adaptations we are excited for. This episode was notably pre-recorded, as Sireen was scheduled to be on maternity leave by the time of its airing. Current Reading Discussion: Contemporary Literature Analysis The hosts begin by sharing their recent reading experiences. Sireen discusses Ali Hazelwood's "2 Can Play," offering a critical analysis of its workplace romance narrative structure and problematic relationship dynamics. Meaghan shares her experience with two recent reads: "The Glimmer in the Hollows" from Round Fire Books, which she describes as a genre-bending mystery that evolves into science fiction, and "We Used to Live Here" by Marcus Kleewer, a thriller that originated from Reddit's NoSleep community. Adaptation Discourse and Fan Culture Analysis A significant portion of the discussion centers on the complex relationship between book adaptations and fan reception. The hosts explore how fan expectations and reactions can impact production decisions, citing specific examples: The shelving of "A Court of Thorns and Roses" adaptation by Hulu The successful casting decisions in "Shadow and Bone" The controversy surrounding various casting choices, including Idris Elba in "The Dark Tower" The debate over Hermione's casting in theatrical production We then move into a detailed examination of upcoming adaptations scheduled or anticipated for 2025: Horror and Thriller Adaptations "Welcome to Derry" (HBO) - A prequel series to "It" featuring Bill Skarsgård "The Housemaid" by Freda McFadden, starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" for Netflix, featuring a stellar cast including Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth Young Adult and Mystery Adaptations "We Were Liars" coming to Amazon Prime "The Good Girl's Guide to Murder" Season 2 "The Inheritance Games" adaptation (in development) Contemporary Literature Adaptations Emily Henry's "People We Meet on Vacation" - the first screen adaptation of her work "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, starring Anne Hathaway Production Analysis and Industry Insights The hosts provide valuable insights into the adaptation process and industry trends throughout their discussion. The industry's approach to casting has evolved significantly, particularly in how productions handle fan expectations versus creative decisions. We see this exemplified in multiple upcoming projects: Anne Hathaway's casting in "Verity" represents a strategic choice to bring established star power to complex source material The casting of Tom Blyth and Emily Borden in "People We Meet on Vacation" shows a careful balance between emerging talent and proven performers The ensemble approach for del Toro's "Frankenstein" demonstrates how productions are leveraging diverse talent pools to create compelling ensemble casts We're witnessing a remarkable trend in how different types of adaptations are being scaled: Premium television series like "Welcome to Derry" are receiving feature-film level budgets and production values Smaller, character-driven stories like "The Housemaid" are being positioned as mid-budget prestigious productions Streaming platforms are investing heavily in multi-season potential, as evidenced by "The Good Girl's Guide to Murder" renewal strategy The industry is embracing innovative production techniques to translate complex literary narratives: Advanced visual effects integration for fantasy and horror adaptations Sophisticated narrative structuring for non-linear storytelling (particularly relevant for "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo") Enhanced production design capabilities that allow for more faithful recreation of literary worlds We're seeing carefully orchestrated release strategies that consider: Strategic timing of releases to avoid oversaturation in specific genres Coordinated marketing campaigns that engage both book fans and new audiences Platform-specific release models (binge vs. weekly episodes) tailored to content type Key trends emerging in the adaptation landscape: Increased focus on diverse source material and representation Growing emphasis on author involvement in adaptation processes Rising importance of social media engagement and fan community management Strategic franchise development potential for successful adaptations Closing Observations The episode concludes with reflections on how 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for book-to-screen adaptations, with both hosts expressing particular interest in how these various projects will handle their source material and meet audience expectations. The discussion consistently returns to the theme of balancing faithful adaptation with creative interpretation, suggesting that the success of these upcoming projects will largely depend on how well they navigate these competing demands while maintaining the core essence of their source material. Did this movie successfully portray Snow's origin story? Listen as Olivia and Emily dig into why this film wasn't a standout, the difficulties of book-to-movie adaptations, how the pacing and directing were off, and why prequels are so intriguing. In this episode, Olivia and Emily discuss the film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, Viola Davis, and Peter Dinklage, released in November 2023.
Keeping up with a retrospective we started years ago can be eye opening. Here we have a review of a movie that is a prequel (boy, where have we heard that before?) to a series that one of us was a fan of, one of us was ambivalent on, and one of us had conspiracy theories about. Welcome, to our Hunger Games The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Listen to the boys refresh peoples' minds about where they stand on the series, and then dive into the new Viola Davis/Peter Dinklage starring prequel that tells the early life story of Coriolanus Snow, played by Tom Blyth here, Donald Sutherland in the original series. Will Matt have a better feeling about how they handle this as opposed to the just reviewed Star Wars prequels? Listen below to find out!

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes In a surprising move to keep us all on our toes, at the premiere for season two of What If? Marvel Studios recently announced a Black Panther spinoff show called Eyes of Wakanda, which will premiere next year on Disney+. If the news from Wakanda wasn't exciting enough to fans, those who attended the premiere also received the privilege of sneak peeks for X-Men ‘97 and Spider-Man: Freshmen Year, which has been renamed to Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, PLUS the studio confirmed a third season for What If?. Ahead of the highly-anticipated third installment in Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool series, set photos are being shared with abandon as drone shots show off more of the movie than the Star wants. Reynolds took to Instagram for a global plea that requested the leaks stop saying, “Surprises are part of the magic of theatrical movies,” and citing the leaks as a “difficult situation.” Reynolds' post finished with him mentioning that spoilers occur when fans are excited AND talking of his enjoyment about making this movie. The 2024 Golden Globe nominations are in and the leaders will surprise nobody, with Barbie and Succession topping the boards with nine nominations each. Other buzzworthy films and shows with many chances to sweep awards are Oppenheimer, The Bear, Killers of the Flower Moon, Only Murders in the Building, Poor Things, and The Crown. Some noted projects that did not garner any noms are Napoleon, Ferrari, Origin, and Swarm. Next year's awards show will premiere two new categories: Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. This year's Golden Globes will be the first held without the oversight of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which has opened the voting opportunity to a more ethnically and racially diverse voting group made up of 300 journalists from 76 different countries. The Wall Street Journal reported Angelina Jolie has officially signed on to reprise her role as Maleficent for a third film in the series. Amazon released the first teaser trailer for Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the reboot series of the 2005 film of the same name, which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The new series stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and will drop in its entirety on Prime on February 2. Tom Blyth, the breakout star of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, signed on to star in a film adaptation of Ernest Hemmingway's World War I novel A Farewell To Arms. The project will begin filming next year. Warner Bros. Discovery signed a multiyear U.S. output deal with studio A24, bringing the entertainment company's slate of films exclusively to Max for streaming after their theatrical runs. Peacock renewed the action-comedy series Twisted Metal starring Anthony Mackie for a second season. According to Deadline, Sean Gunn will play the evil businessman Maxwell Lord in the new DC Universe that is helmed by his brother James Gunn. It is not yet clear if Sean Gunn will make an appearance in the upcoming Superman Legacy or if he will appear in different future DC projects. Netflix renewed the animated drama series Blue Eye Samurai for a second season. After a series of concerning reports about Marvel Studios' Blade film, Mahershala Ali addressed the state of the project. “We're working on it. That's the best I could tell you,” Ali said, speaking to Entertainment Weekly. “I'm really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we'll be back at it relatively soon.” Godzilla Minus One, now at $14.36 million at the box office, is currently the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America. This follows an opening weekend that marked the biggest Stateside debut of a foreign film this year.

(Plus a day or so).The second book we ever read and discussed for the podcast was A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins when it was released in 2020. Join us as we discuss the similarities and differences between the book and movie and the merit of the movie itself. And as we ask the question only you, our loyal listeners can answer; Does this count as a sequel?

Brenna and Joe return to Panem for The Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, directed by franchise regular Francis Lawrence. While Joe struggles with the transition from Part 2 to 3, Brenna is unconvinced by lead actor Tom Blyth or the romance between Snow and Lucy Gray.We do, however, have plenty of praise for Viola Davis, Hunter Schafer and Jason Schwartzman, as well as the costume design and the politics of the dystopia.Perhaps it simply needed to be a (mini)series instead of a 2 hour 40 minute movie?Missed our discussion of the book? Can you tell the SAG-AFTRA strike is over after several long months, folks? We sure can, because the Empire Podcast this week was besieged by big-name Hollywood actor-types, all keen to appear on the podcast after months of walking up and down outside studios with picket signs. First up, the wonderful Rachel Zegler returns to the pod to talk to Sophie Butcher about starring in the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes, and brings her British co-star, Tom Blyth, with her. Then, John Nugent sits down on Zoom for an engrossing chat about Killers Of The Flower Moon and the history surrounding it and the Osage people with that film's breakout star, Lily Gladstone. And then, because it's British Actors Named Tom Week, apparently, the one and only Tom Hiddleston — Loki himself — returns to the pod for a chat with Chris Hewitt about the triumphant final episode of season 2 of Loki. Now, bear in mind, this is a lengthy excerpt from our spoiler special interview (which is available now in full, fact fans), so do not listen to it until you've seen Loki s2. So we've placed it right at the end of the pod (1:45:16.00 - 2:01:42.00, to be precise-ish) for the spoiler-averse. Then, in the podbooth, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer and, for a spell, John Nugent to discuss the worst presents they've ever bought each other, John Candy movies, the week's movie news (there's a lot of MCU and MCU-adjacent stuff this week, you'll be shocked to hear) and to review May December, Saltburn, and that Hunger Games movie with the long title. Welcome back, actors — we missed you! Enjoy.

For a franchise fan like me, it was a joy to spend time in Panem again. Tom Blyth shines in the central role of Coriolanus Snow, providing a simultaneously tragic and infuriating villain origin story. The strength of this prequel remains the amount of details and history about people and events from The Hunger Games series that it fills in and seeing them visualized was very satisfying. Die Tribute von Panem - The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes | Ein prächtiges Prequel? The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes". Vegas Film Critic (Jeffrey K Howard) speaks to with the cast of Billy the Kid on epix.
Billy the Kid is a new EPIX Original series, written by Vikings and The Tudors creator Michael Hirst and stars British actor Tom Blyth (The Gilded Age, Benediction) and Daniel Webber (The Dirt, Escape From Pretoria). The series is an epic romantic adventure series based on the life of famous American outlaw, also known as William H. Bonney — from his humble Irish roots, to his early days as a cowboy and gunslinger in the American frontier, to his pivotal role in the Lincoln County War and beyond. Webber will play Jesse Evans, another famous outlaw and leader of the Seven Rivers Gang. When they meet, Jesse has already embraced a life of crime: robbing stores and cattle rustling. Billy is attracted to his wild and reckless character and becomes Billy's doppelganger of sorts — his shadow self, forever inviting him over to the dark side of life. Series star, Tom Blyth hails from Nottingham, England where he lived prior to being accepted to study at Juilliard in New York City. Assorted local theatre, film and television work in England was followed by training and productions with the prestigious National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, one of which took him to perform in Saudi Arabia. Upon graduation from Juilliard in 2020, he was immediately cast in a supporting role in the film “Benediction”, written and directed by Terence Davies. Blyth played the historical figure, Glen Byam Shaw, in this portrait of 1920s British art scene. He just completed filming a guest role in HBO's “The Gilded Age”. He resides in New York City.
