I think the filmmakers had good intentions when they made SHIRLEY, unfortunately, they failed to stick to the essentials of storytelling. In this episode, Melanie does a fantastic job of illustrating what happens to a story when writers fail to create obstacles that progressively complicate the plot. (Progressive Complications are a big deal - you're going to want to pay attention to this one.) And I do a deep dive into the core event (aka the climax) and explain why it doesn't work and how you can avoid making the same mistake in your novel. -V. Guess who's back in the house?! We finally close the loop on the 2018 troubled son trifecta of films with Ben is Back, a grim Christmas tale of a family in the throws of addiction recovery. In Jonah Hill's directorial debut, he tackles the world of 90s skateboarding in southern California. Sunny Suljic plays a young boy growing up in Los Angeles, with an abusive older brother (portrayed by Lucas Hedges), and a single mom (portrayed by Katherine Waterston). He soon finds a clique of skateboarders at his local neighborhood skate shop, and all he knows is that he needs to learn how to skateboard, and join the community. The A24 rocks crew invites on 90s skateboarder and NIN super-fan Kyle Kanon to discuss the film's realism. Caution: movie spoilers. Intro- 0:00 to 3:58. Film Discussion- 3:58 to 1:24:35. Join Alex and guest host Dr. Lee Golembiewski as they discuss the harrowing true story of a young gay man enduring conversion therapy in the US South in Boy Erased (2018). The film stars Lucas Hedges as Jared, playing a version of Garrard Conley, who wrote a memoir of the same name in 2016, detailing his journey through conversion therapy in the early 2000s. The film also stars Russell Crowe as his pastor father, who ultimately made the decision to send Jared to the harmful Christian ministry, Nicole Kidman, as his mother, who makes a startling transformation during the film, and Joel Edgerton, who plays the ministry's lead "counselor" — Edgerton also directed and assisted in adapting the book into a screenplay. They explore the therapy's practices, religion and spirituality, acceptance, and harm done by these kinds of programs, that to this day, still exist in many parts of the US and the world, because of the view that anything different in sexuality and gender from the norm of cisheteronormativity is aberrant and must be corrected through spiritual healing. While the filmmaking is rough around the edges, the message and themes are powerful ones from a psychological perspective! Wanna talk politics? Liv and Em dive deep into U.S. politics while discussing Shirley Chisholm, the first black woman to be elected to the United States Congress. Olivia and Emily praise the diverse storytelling of this film while critiquing the amateur editing, pacing, and misdirected focus. It did a lot and did nothing for such an important story to tell. Wait till the end as Liv and Em discover why this film dragged. The film Shirley was directed by John Ridley, starring Regina King, Christina Jackson, Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, and was released March 22, 2024 (a presidential election year) on Netflix.
In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress in the United States. Four years later, she made history again as the first woman and African American to seek the presidential nomination from one of the two major political parties. Her life and legacy are honored on the screen for the first time in John Ridley's 2024 biographical drama film: ‘Shirley.' The film stars Regina King in the titular role and features Lance Reddick, Terrence Howard, Lucas Hedges, Christina Jackson and more. LIFF komt eraan! This week on Remainders, we discuss the 2016 film Manchester By the Sea. A story of grief, depression, trauma and confronting the past, Kenneth Lonergan directs a movie that manages to deal with these difficult themes while also showing the imperfections in life and the awkward, sometimes funny moments in between. A case of realism with a touch of levity, Casey Affleck plays Lee, a man who upon losing his brother must step into the parental role for his nephew, played by Lucas Hedges. Both give incredible performances and let's the audience feel for their characters as they are exposed and vulnerable in times of death.Other topics include best performances by Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, Darren's upcoming Punk Rock & Paintbrushes at When We Were Young festival, recent and upcoming live shows, the month of Friday the 13th marathons, and Elvis in the movies.Songs of the WeekSee See Rider by LaVern BakerShake Some Action by the Flamin' GrooviesAll songs on the Remainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter
Step into a world of impactful theatre as we unpack the latest podcast episode. We kick things off with Grenfell: in the words of survivors at the National Theatre. This powerful verbatim play draws directly from the testimonies of the residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With six years passed since the devastating event, the interviews with survivors and bereaved individuals lay bare the shocking impact of the failures that led to this national disaster. Gillian Slovo masterfully weaves these voices into a narrative that raises urgent questions about prevention and justice. Co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, the play delves into the resilience of a community fighting for justice, forming part of the National Theatre's ongoing creative engagement with North Kensington.Switching gears, we dive into the sensational world of Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors. Kenneth Lonergan wrote and directed "Manchester by the Sea" A great film that earned Best Original Screenplay and Best Male Lead Actor and the film deserves. It's a film that heavily deals with guilt and grief due to a tragic loss of family. As heavy the emotions are in the this film, Lonergan was able to write some comedy in the film, almost making into a black comedy. We need some type of release from our troubles even though they wont fix anything. Life always goes on but it's important how you go about it. I love how the film tackles with life and it goes into different avenues about it. I enjoyed watching this film so much due to the actors that carry the dialog, especially Patrick Chandler, the character almost steals the film. The casting is great. You wold think Casey Affleck and Lucas Hedges would be an odd combo to carry each other but they proved to win us over even though I never had a problem about that to begin with. My favorite shot of the film is a scene toward the first act where you see the boat with the characters on it and obviously the camera is on a mobile surface shooting the boat in a full shot. As boring as it can be, it shows what this film is going to be about. It's going to be about family and how we can support each in tough times. Don't give up on your people.Four out of four tokes.

In preparation for Barbie later this summer, we're covering Greta Gerwig's two solo directorial efforts, starting with 2017's Lady Bird. We discuss the flawed and familiar character of Lady Bird, the confident and mature directing from Gerwig, and we determine what physical attachment Lucas Hedges needs in each movie (in this movie, he needs a hug). Also, why we hate when characters sit in the middle seat in the back of a car. (Recorded May 7th, 2023.)
Rachel Zegler's getting relatable! Lucas Hedges is getting Brokeback! Tyra Banks is quitting DWTS (to do more ice cream?)! Timmy tried the $19 Chris Appleton Erewhon smoothie! Pax J-P is out getting papped (and Rob K. is not!) Delilah Belle Hamlin's getting musical! Tessa Thompson is getting untruthful! (Allegedly.) Noah Schnapp is getting entrepreneurial! Nicole Peltz is getting boring (in Cosmo!) This week the boys discuss M. Night Shyamalan's latest directorial feature, Knock at the Cabin (2023), which stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Rubert Grint. While Night had some source material to work with in Paul Tremblay's book "The Cabin at the End of the World", he changed the ending, so he was able to keep some surprise in how it's going to end. Not sure our co-host John liked that, he might have liked it more than his significant other, which is new for him. Jeff also made Dave edit some stuff out about the Chinese Spy Balloon because he ran his mouth about something he knew nothing about. However, since this movie has to do with the apocalypse, and we might have Russia and China both occupying land at the same time, maybe this movie will age well! This week the boys are joined by actress Tina Nikolova to drink some whiskey and beer and discuss Aftersun (2022), writer/director (and multiple-BAFTA nominee) Charlotte Wells' personal feature film starring Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal (Normal People, The Lost Daughter, Gladiator 2) and newcomer scene-stealer Frankie Corio. The film is very Scottish, and those UK-ers must really love their lottery because The National Lottery sponsored this. Apparently they sponsor a lot. The film is about a woman reflecting back on a vacation she took with her young father when she was young, reliving moments and flashes through home videos that capture more about her father than she was able to see as a child. Powerful stuff! Additional Cast/Crew: Celia Rowlson-Hall, Sally Messham, Spike Fearn, Harry Perdios, Ruby Thompson, Kayleigh Coleman, Barry Jenkins, Oliver Coates, Gregory Oke. "How do you know if you want something yourself or if your upbringing programmed you to want it?" On this episode, Evelyn Landow returns to the show to talk about The Matrix Resurrections, the latest from Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. We talk about the whole series of films as a trans allegory, and we look at it through an ex-fundamentalist lens as well. After that, I break down the other films and TV I've been watching, including what I saw at Sundance 2022! And in the second half of the show, we continue the series The Art of Deconstruction: Faith, Doubt and Film with guest Dinah House-fire. Dinah is an ex-fundamentalist Christian as well as a drag queen. And she's just a ton of tun to talk to, even when the topic is heavy. Dinah selected the film Boy Erased, so after telling us her story, we dig into that film starring Lucas Hedges as a young man going through gay conversion therapy. Content warning for that portion of the show (there's a content warning in the episode as well), but it's a great discussion and I'm so glad Dinah joined the show. This is also our longest episode ever, but everything Dinah says is great so I just couldn't cut anything. A quick note on Evelyn Landow: she has a music video coming out soon! I forgot to mention it on the show, but stay tuned to Arthouse Garage's Facebook page for a link when that drops soon. My guest today is Matthew Thomas-Malani. Matt and I went to high school together and reconnected a few years ago on Facebook when I shared a recommendation for the movie, Boy Erased, staring Lucas Hedges.Matt and I both grew up in religious communities that taught being gay was wrong -- a sin. As I have declared I no longer subscribe to those teachings, I've had people from that community respond quite harshly and critically. Imagine how much more difficult it is for someone to come out as gay in such an environment, as was Matt's experience.I'm so grateful for Matt's willingness to share pieces of his coming our journey. Today, Matt is happily married to Tony Brooks. Matt and Tony live in a carriage house in Pennsylvania with their three dogs -- Thacher, a treeing walker coonhound, and the beagle brothers, Franklin and Zebulon. Matt is a voracious reader, mostly of non-fiction and he loves good movies and certain sitcoms (with irreverent humor). He loves to cook and bake, although he says he's a better cook than baker. If you or someone you know is struggling with their coming our journey, here are some resources for support and encouragement. Happy Pride!!! Rod and Raf are joined by friend of the pod, Adam Glen, as the trio take on all things LGBTQ2+ in this week's special episode. What defines Queer Cinema? It has certainly evolved over the course of time; from the ragtag comedies of Tim Curry's Rocky Horror Picture Show and Robin Williams' The Birdcage to even the heights of auteur cinema with Tom Ford's A Single Man and Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire. In many aspects, Queer cinema is the exploration of a journey of identity and the acceptance of understanding a time and a place within world challenged by change. Aside from themes or even obvious representation of queer characters, is there a specificity in what defines queer cinema? There must be more than including characters of the LBTQ2+ community within a narrative – right? In addition, is there a standout A24 leading man between Timothee Chalamet and Lucas Hedges? Also, Luca Guadagino pulls arguably a very smart PR move to stay away from bad news. All this and more in this new episode!
Delighted to be rejoined again by Keelin Moncrieff. We talk about moving on from YouTube, moving to London, online forums, Movies and of course Lucas Hedges. Enjoy x
40 Years a PrisonerThis doc, directed by Tommy Oliver and available now on HBO Max.It posts a celeb lineup of producers, including The Roots, Common, and John Legend.40 Years a prisoner tells the sorry of the 1978 police raid on a peaceful group of hippies, mostly young, mostly African American, living in a house in the Powellton Village neighborhood of Philadelphia. In 1978, Philadelphia's mayor and former police commissioner Frank Rizzo ran the city.He tried to starve the group out of its home, preventing food and water from getting into the house using barricades. He sent in more than 600 cops armed with automatic rifles, armored vehicles, and bulldozers when that failed. Still, the MOVE members refused to "move." They hid in their basement. In response, Rizzo and the PPD pumped 250,000 gallons of water and teargas into the Move house's basement. Ultimately bullets started flying, resulting in the death of police officer James Ramp.Nine adult Move members were dragged out of the house– five men and four women. One, Delbert Africa was savagely beaten by a group of police, his jaw broken by the butt of a rifle. All nine were convicted and sentenced to 30 years to life.Rizzo quotes:“The police will be in there to drag them out by the backs of their necks. They are going to go either the easy or hard way, either standing up or lying down.” “Get the death penalty back, put them in the electric chair, and I'll pull the switch.”But this doc isn't so much about Rizzo or the cops or what happened in 1978 (and the rest of the MOVE story.) This is the story of Mike Africa Jr and his parents Debbie and Mike Sr who were members of The Move Nine who were arrested during that raid on trumped-up charges and convicted before he was born.Mike Jr was born in a jail cell and ow in his early 40's has never spent a moment with his parents outside of prison walls. Also, on HBOMax, Let Them All Talk was not what we were expecting! We feared it was going to be yet another movie about people of a "certain age," starring some of the greatest actors of their generation reduced to cute or quirky old folks on one last adventure. We were pleasantly surprised by this story by directed by Steven Soderbergh and written by Deborah Eisenberg. It boasts a top-notch cast led by Meryl Streep, Dianne Wiest, and Candice Bergen with a stand out performance by Lucas Hedges. The film also features one of our fav actors from Humans, Gemma Chan.Listen to the show to hear more about this unique, quirky movie and how it was made.

Sean answers your Marvel questions!0:23 Hector Giovanni NavarreteHey Sean I was just barely listening to your Shanlian on Batman guest appearance episode in which y'all discuss the 10 year anniversary of TDK. First of all that episode was great! TDK has a special place in my heart because it's the film that made me fall in love with “geek”/pop culture! After that film and in anticipation of TDKR is where I found MMM and you, amongst other podcast about similar topics. So I wasn't around for the build up to TDK and wasn't a part of the ARG for that film. So that episode was a great chronicle of events leading up to that film, thank you! My questions are:1. Why do you think no other Superhero/Comic book film has not done an ARG similar to TDK? I know TDKR did one but it doesn't sound like it was on the level it was for TDK. 06:51 Hector Giovanni Navarrete2. I know you mention in that episode that no other ARG was as big or as detailed as TDK's. While I agree it's one of the most popular ones out there, the only one that, to me, can truly rival that one is the 1st Cloverfield movies' ARG. I wasn't really following this stuff at that time, but it seems like that one was also as big and detailed. It seems that this film's ARG wasn't as popular/well known as TDK's. I know that the Cloverfield fan group is a “cult” fandom (not in a bad way, just in regards to size). I love the Cloverfield franchise, was let down by Cloverfield Paradox but the first 2 were great! What's your opinion on them? I think you've mentioned before that you liked the 1st one directed by Matt Reeves.08:03 Hector Giovanni Navarrete3. Lastly I feel like Nolan was also starting a type of trend in superhero cinema of having a villain prologue before jumping into the crux of the stories (examples: TDK & TDKR). I know some superhero films have done a sort of prologue of sorts, although not necessarily of villains per say more like about main characters/parents (examples Ant-Man & The Wasp, ASM 1). Although Civil War did have a good short one about Winter Soldier and Tony's parents. Do you like when there are prologues to movies, more specifically to superhero movies, and why do you think they can be effective? Also do you like when they are integral to the story or just sort of add some context to the bigger story? Would you like more films in the genre to do more prologues?10:30 Derek BeebeWhat do you think was the best year of multiple Marvel movie releases? I think it's 2018; Black Panther, Infinity War, and Ant-Man Wasp were all excellent! 11:47 Derek BeebeWhat year do you think had the biggest quality gap between movies? My pick is 2016. I really loved Civil War, but I thought Doctor Strange was merely good.12:32 Derek BeebeWhat are the best Marvel movies to get in 4K?13:45 Derek BeebeI've been reading the Abnett/Lanning run of cosmic comics from Annihilation to Conquest to War of Kings to the Thanos Imperative. What was your favorite storyline of these?15:12 Phillip CastroHey Sean, great job on the content as always! I apologize if this has already been touched on but I wanted to ask your thoughts on whether or not you can see Ghost possibly playing a significant role in Endgame beyond rescuing Scott from the Quantum Realm?16:23 AlexWhy do you think Video game related movies don't work as movies as well as comic book/novel adaptations? And can you ever see a good and successful video game movie ever being made? 20:17 Woo S! KimI used to purchase the Marvel Collector Corps from Funko for my little sisters and they love them. Although, I feel since Funko partnered with Amazon starting with the Deadpool 2 Collector Corps box the quality of the exclusive items has gone down, this is the main reason I don't purchase them any longer, I believe in giving the people I love great gifts. Do you still get the Marvel Collector Corps boxes and if you have, what are your thoughts on the boxes in the last six months or so?22:35 Woo S! KimSean is it true in one version of the Six-One-Six Marvel Universe that The Eternals were responsible for the creation of Mutants and would you like to be the explanation of how Mutants are in the MCU, why or why not?24:17 Woo S! KimThis is going to be a tough question, but I wanted your point of view, Sean. Of the three MCU characters that have had trilogies Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man who do you think have had the most compelling transformative arcs that you have enjoyed the most and why, this includes things we've seen in team-ups.25:27 Alex WardDo you think Black Widow will have a male or female villain? While I want the villain to be a woman so we can have more representation in the MCU, I also think she deserves to go up against a prestige mainstream villain like Taskmaster. What are some female villains you'd like to see in the Black Widow movie, or possibly gender-bent male villains?27:10 Michael Louis WeaselboyHey Sean how do you think they will do Deadpool 3?? Ryan Reynolds said it would be very different, do you think they will incorporate the previous two into the MCU as is or make it a pocket universe? I know it might confuse the audience but we will see. Also when do you think they will release it?29:45 Jordan BentleyHey Sean! Assuming that we lose certain Avengers in Endgame, be it to retirement or deaths, do you think we will get characters like Riri who will pick up the mantle, or will they just let those characters rest for a while?33:03 AlexWho's your top choices for Johnny Storm? I like the idea of Lucas Hedges(who's the same age as Tom Holland) or Dacre Montgomery who I liked a lot in Stranger Things season 2. And out of these two suggestions that I have given which actor out of these two do you think would suit the role more over the other?34:39 AlexI know he's recently been rumored for the Caped Crusader but do you think Richard Madden would be a good fit for everybody's favorite Elastic genius Dr. Reed Richards? I think Madden is a good actor based off what I've seen of him in the Netflix The Bodyguard and I feel Mr. Madden has a strong resemblance to the original Jack Kirby rendition of Reed from the comics.35:44 AlexSean, you are quite familiar with my paranoia/worry about certain markets like China blocking the deal but now I have a big concern that Brazil might potentially be the roadblock that might prevent the deal from becoming a reality. Apparently Iger recently had a meeting with Brazilian regulators in order to explain the value of the deal and it ended without any agreement being reached. How do you see this playing out, Sean? The fact that Iger has to go over to Brazil to meet with regulators tells me that Brazil might be the hardest market to acquire approval in.39:23 AlexDo you think the X-Men coming into the MCU could potentially impede the creativity of the MCU? What I mean creativity is I'm talking about Marvel's willingness to make big brands out of properties that were previously considered obscure or not bankable. It's obvious that if Marvel had X-Men from the start then stuff like Guardians Of The Galaxy would not happen. Sean, can you eventually see a point in which Marvel will eventually stop making movies about lesser known characters and be strictly be in the Mutant-business or do you still foresee Marvel still making movies around more obscure properties like Eternals and Guardians Of The Galaxy. I must admit as much as I like the idea of the merry Mutants coming home I still have a worry that Marvel could end up relying on them too much like Warners relied on Batman and Superman until now. 43:02 Alex WardWe have not seen many villains make major comebacks in the MCU aside from Loki, Thanos, and maybe one or two more that I'm totally blanking on for some reason. That being said, what existing villains would you like to see come back in a big way? I think Red Skull would be a great character to make a full comeback (yes he cameo'd in Infinity War but that doesn't count), maybe in the Falcon/Bucky series or if the Cap movies continue.Similarly, when villains do return, there has to be a twist of some sort, or maybe just some kind of change from their first appearance. For example, Loki had the backing of the Chitauri. What do you think will be different about the Avengers' rematch with Thanos? Do you think maybe there's another villain?49:24 Alex WardDo you think the WB streaming service will absorb the DCU service?54:43 Jerry KowalskiI managed to get my Disney/Marvel Studios 1st 10yrs AIW hat, and just received the Iron Man one, do u know if there will be others? Also if & when Marvel does do their version of The X-Men, why don't they sit on Wolverine a bit, and focus on the core/og members such as Jean,Iceman, maybe Beast, Prof.X and of course Scott, and finally give scott his due and perhaps push him to the forefront of the new X series?57:49 Mookie JohnsonIs it plausible the Infinity war shot with the heros running to the camera that wasn't in the movie was actually footage from Avengers: Endgame or was it just shot for the trailer?59:24 Mookie JohnsonI love the Red Skull's appearance in Infinity War, but it makes no sense to me. Ever since I first saw it, it has felt forced. Why would it send him to the soul stone? Even if I accept the explanation at face value, it means the Space stone decided he was unworthy and then sent him to the Soul Stone as punishment.... So I guess the Space stone was thinking if he spends time with the soul stone he'd grow past his greed and lust for power. What are your thoughts on this?1:04:25 AlexJeph Loeb recently commented on the pending Disney/Fox acquisition and expressed enthusiasm over the prospects of Marvel having the Merry Mutants and The First Family all under one roof and it got me thinking what effects can you see the Disney merger having on the the future seasons of the remaining non-netflix, Marvel shows produced by the television division like Agents Of Shield and the Runaways. Could we possibly see mutants in those shows and all future non-Netflix Marvel shows eventually or do you think the mutants will only be relegated to only Marvel Studio's productions like the movies and the Disney Streaming Service shows?1:08:56 Alex WardAvengers: Endgame Spoiler question See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
