The rap superstars Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been on a collision course for a decade, trading periodic diss tracks to assert their superiority—but earlier this month the long-simmering beef erupted into a showdown that said as much about the artists as it did about the art. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz examine how the back-and-forth devolved from a litigation of craft into a series of ad-hominem attacks alleging everything from cultural appropriation to pedophilia. They discuss the way rivalries function in the creative world, fuelling new work and compelling audiences to pay closer attention to it than ever before. The hosts also consider other feuds of note, from a nineteenth-century debate over Shakespearean actors that ended in violence to the writer Renata Adler's blistering takedown of the film critic Pauline Kael in The New York Review of Books. Why do so many of these schisms revolve around fundamental questions of authenticity and belonging? And, once they start to spiral, is there any going back? “Conflict can be productive emotionally and also artistically,” Schwartz says. “But this is not a place that we can permanently reside.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“DAMN.,” by Kendrick Lamar“To Pimp a Butterfly,” by Kendrick Lamar“Control,” by Big Sean featuring Kendrick Lamar and Jay Electronica“First Person Shooter,” by Drake featuring J. This week the boys are joined by rapper, podcaster, event organiser, and patron of the culture Lemzi. He's objectively the coolest person Barney has ever met, but he Barney did a good job of being chill about it. Lemzi talks to us about the work he has been doing to merge music and mindfulness with SPOKE as well as the outstanding In-Facts events that he co-founded. We also discuss Lemzi's creative project or CP, 'Outliers' and the creative process that led him to the finished project. Lemzi's VRP album is the powerful, impactful and iconic 'To Pimp a Butterfly' by the legendary Kendrick Lamar. Dapo could not hide from the fact that he put this album bottom of his Kendrick album ranking but that didn't stop this being a really insightful breakdown of this incredible piece of art .If you want to see more of Vinyl Resting Place you can find all of our previous episodes here: https://vinylrestingplace.buzzsprout.com/Check out our TikTok and Insta too why don't ya:@vinylrestingplacepodHosts: Dapo Agiri - @dapo_ag Barney Howe - @barns_howeGuest - Lemzihttps://www.lemzi.com/aboutIn-facts Events - https://www.instagram.com/infactsevents/?hl=enOutro - 'Bill Dis' by Lemzi from OutliersEdited By: Carlray EdwardsFind him on Upwork, Fiverr and FreeUp

I remember you was conflicted... Join us for one of the greatest hip hop, rap, and concept albums of all time. It's got sounds from across time and space and it's themes can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. Although it received seven Grammy nominations, it was infamously snubbed for the best rap album... which was probably just because the music industry was mad Kendrick called them out for pimping their artists. On this episode, I'm joined once again by Sabrina Clarke was we dive into the hip hop masterpiece To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar. Filled with nods to the past, and messages for the future, Kendrick displayed his maturity as an artist, but also his humble roots to deliver one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.

Breaking the global record for streams in a single day, nearly 10 million people around the world tuned in to hear Kendrick Lamar's sophomore album in the hours after its release. To Pimp a Butterfly was widely hailed as an instant classic, garnering laudatory album reviews, many awards, and even a canonized place in Harvard's W. E. B. Du Bois archive. Why did this strangely compelling record stimulate the emotions and imaginations of listeners? This book takes a deep dive into the sounds, images, and lyrics of To Pimp a Butterfly to suggest that Kendrick appeals to the psyche of a nation in crisis and embraces the development of a radical political conscience. Kendrick breathes fresh life into the Black musical protest tradition and cultivates a platform for loving resistance. Combining funk, jazz, and spoken word, To Pimp a Butterfly's expansive sonic and lyrical geography brings a high level of innovation to rap music. More importantly, Kendrick's introspective and philosophical songs compel us to believe in a future where, perhaps, we gon' be alright. Join us for this conversation with author Sequoia Maner, hosted by Lance Morgan. _______________________________________________ Produced by Nat Freeman, Lance Morgan, & Michael Kowaleski.
