Imagine a world where all the information about the city or town you live in - from bike share availability to flood detection to nocturnal bat activity - is readily available in a 3D map on your mobile phone. A world where data-driven cities use geospatial artificial intelligence, such as interactive mapping, 3D environments, modelling and simulations, to manage their urban environments and tackle problems in real time. The digital transformation of maps and mapping that has been underway in recent decades is far from over and is likely to see highly visual 3D maps replace 2D maps among other advances, according to a presentation by Prof Rob Kitchin of Maynooth University's Department of Geography and Social Sciences Institute (MUSSI) to the 2024 International Geographical Congress (IGC). He was delivering the keynote address at a session on the future of mapping at the largest gathering of international geographers which is taking place in Ireland for the first time. In his talk, Prof Kitchin said the process of digital transformation continues to evolve and will demand new ways to make sense of mapping. Prof Kitchin said that urban 'digital twins', a twinning of physical environments and systems and a virtual counterpart, are still in their infancy. Presently they exist as City Information Modelling (CIM), where a detailed virtual model mirrors the urban landscape with accurate topology and topography and realistic buildings and landscape rendering and in which administrative and real-time data can be visualised. However, such models are far from being a true digital twin in terms of changes in the real world being updated in real-time in the virtual model, and changes in the model creating an alteration in geographic space. "Yet CIMs and the promise of digital twins have captured the interest of many stakeholders. Governments see them as a useful tool for urban management and governance, formulating and assessing urban planning, and the monitoring of city services and policies. Architectural, construction, and planning businesses see them as a means to develop and sell urban designs and plans. "Researchers aim to use them to produce urban simulations and models and to facilitate participatory projects relating to local places, and civil society organisations are interested in creating new kinds of counter-mapping initiatives that might open up new political conversations about urban development," Prof Kitchin said. He noted that CIMs allow: users to be immersed in, and walk or fly through, digital landscapes display many kinds of spatial and environmental data experiment with building and urban designs such as altering building dimensions run various forms of simulations and models such as traffic movement act as a collaborative environment for discussion, design practice and operations By doing so, they have the potential to enrich public understanding of prospective urban design in public consultation, facilitate participatory planning and improve communication of sustainability science, and aid real-time management of city infrastructures and space. He also noted that digital twins and deep maps prompt critical reflection on the nature of mapping. While such methods are cast as "value-free, objective" they are instead "an engine, not a mirror" in that they change rather than just reflect the world. In this sense, they are far from being neutral tools but reflect the ambitions and aims of their creators. The IGC session was co-hosted with the RGS-IBG Annual International Conference taking place in London. Also presenting at the same event were Luke Barrington, AI Product Lead for Google Dublin, and Celine Rozenblat, Chair of the United Nations Geospatial societies on Global Geospatial Information Management who discussed the development of Geo-AI. In his presentation, "Earth AI: Models of the planet as seen from satellites to Street View and everything in between", Google's Barrington spoke about using geospatial obse...

This episode dives into that world in an attempt to demystify some of the ins and outs of the acquisition of analytics consultancies, from the owners' perspectives, employees' perspectives, and acquiring companies' perspectives. Since these are all perspectives that none of your dear co-hosts really have, Bob Morris, the co-founder and managing partner for Bravery Group, joined us for a discussion of EBITDA, TTM, CIMs, and even aspects of the space that are not captured by acronyms! Terry Currier grew up in Seattle and took a liking to music in school, playing the flute-o-phone in 4th Grade. The following summer he took up the violin with the Suzuki method. Three months into the 5th grade his father Lando, noticed a slide in the enthusiasm about the instrument while he did his daily practicing. “Are you not happy with the violin?' Terry said “the sound the other violins make hurt my ears. They screech.” After a serious conversation, his father found out Terry would rather play the clarinet and woke him up a month later and presented him with a new clarinet. To make up for being 4 months behind on the instrument, he took private lessons to catch up. By junior high it was apparent that Terry would go to college after high school and pursue music. Between music and his participation in Boy Scouts, that pretty much took up most of his free time as a youth. When he was 16 he decided to get a motorcycle versus a car and he learned to drive in the yard. At 16 ½, he realized a motorcycle was not the best mode of transportation in the Northwest, where it rained and snowed in the winter, so he bought a ‘66 Mustang. It had a radio in it and he discovered recorded music for the first time. A week after he turned 17, he went to his first concert. He saw Nitzinger opening up for Leon Russell and the Shelter People. 2 weeks later he applied for a job in a record store (DJ's Sound City). He was hired solely on his enthusiasm and not for his musical knowledge, which was close to nil. HISTORIC MOMENTS IN CARRER. - Pioneered live music in a Record Store. In 1989, while deciding what to do for Music Millennium's 20th Anniversary, he turned to his then partner, Don MacLeod and stated “Let's have 20 straight days of live music in the store,” After looking at renting a system, they decided to buy a system and put a permanent stage in the store. Since then Music Millennium has hosted over 4000 live performances including Soundgarden, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper with the only ever instore performances of Randy Newman, Joe Strummer and Keith Emerson. - Currier and Music Millennium dubbed “modern day folk heroes” for their role in the brilliantly effective crusade against used CD policies. Discontent with policies instituted by 4 of the 6 major distribution companies, Terry fought to overturn the policies. After Garth Brooks announced his new album would not be available in stores that sold used product, Currier immediately responded with a “West Coast Bar-B-Q For Retail Freedom” tour – actually roasting Brooks CDs, VHS, Posters and cassettes to dramatize the retailer' plight. The tour started in Bellingham, WA and hit 9 stores between there and San Diego, CA. The protest captured the attention of TNN, CNN, Forbes and People magazine, and resulted in a repeal of the restrictive polices. - In the aftermath of the Bar-B-Q For Retail Freedom, Terry realized the common concerns and interests in the 9 stores on the tour as well as stores that reached out about the issue from around the country. He presented a proposal to Mark Cope, Retail Editor of Album Network and arranged for a meeting at the NARM convention in Florida. The idea was to create a group of retailers who could work records together and make a difference as well as act as a support team. This germinated into a meeting in San Francisco at the NAIRD convention in May 1995, with 25 retailers from across the country meeting in a room for a day to see if they could find commonality to work together. CIMS was born. - After a several year germination of an idea to support local unique businesses and talking multiple times to John Kunz of Waterloo Records about a new slogan in his city, “Keep Austin Weird”, Currier created “Keep Portland Weird.' at the suggestion of Kunz. It has organically become the city of Portland's motto and most used phase. All production by Cody Maxwell. Artwork by Cody Maxwell. This paper will discuss the impact of the case method on three separate cohorts, all in the context of Islamic education. Although a very widely used tool in higher education, the use of the case method is rare in Islamic education, normally being superseded by a traditional didactic or instructive style of teaching, a feature that often extends across most age groups and even into specialised seminary learning. Retrospective observational analysis was conducted on three separate cohorts in the community who were exposed to the case methodology over a period of five years. Three separate areas of growth were seen in the cohorts in varying degrees. Personal growth and mentoring of the individual through the acquisition of key life skills such as critical analysis, public speaking, presentation skills and ability to collaborate with others. Increasing knowledge base of the individual in a wide variety of Islamic and non-Islamic disciplines. Triggers for community action following identification of critical societal issues. Significant areas requiring greater engagement by community leaders were also frequently flagged up such as suppressed atheism, apostasy, child abuse, mental health and ethical practices of Muslims. Above all, the nature of the case method ensured cross-generational as well as cross-gender conversations on major neglected issues affecting Muslims in the UK, ultimately allowing participants to critically evaluate their faith in a safe space without judgement, develop key life skills and study Islam in context of the modern world and tackle major societal issues relevant not only to Muslims, but society as a whole.

Averroes adopted a legal-centric epistemological framework in order to prove #Philosophy as #Islamic. The main focus was to demonstrate to what extent philosophy was Islamic using Averroes' systematised framework from his legal treatise, Kitāb faṣl al-maqāl as a rebuttal to Muslim jurists who considered philosophy as anti-Islamic. Using Averroes' legal treatise, Sayyid Wajee showed how Averroes employs the legal methodology and the principles adopted by Muslim jurists against them, highlighting the compatibility between philosophy and Islam. Moreover, Averroes' grounds his assertions of philosophy as an Islamic endeavour by combining the technical jargon of the jurists with Qurʾānic passages as a way of conclusively affirming the concept of ‘Islamic philosophy'. The presentation highlighted the negative attitude towards philosophy in the 12th century and this attitude persisting in the 21st century in certain Islamic institutions. Sayyid Wajee emphasised on #Averroes premise that the study of law which is widely accepted by Muslim thinkers as an Islamic enterprise according to the jurists themselves, the same sentiment should be afforded to Muslim philosophers

Dr. Jones presented a paper on ‘Islam and Science', which drew on previous research on perceptions of evolution by the research team for the project ‘Science and Religion: Exploring the Spectrum', as well as new research being conducted on views of Islam and science among Muslim religious leaders. He spoke about the findings of a survey of British Muslims on science and evolution, highlighting that British Muslims are marginally more likely to identify with science than the wider British public but remain both sceptical and uncertain about biological evolution. Muslims' evolution scepticism varies significantly depending on how questions are asked, while they are also considerably more likely to suggest that they do not know how to respond.

The presentation aimed to cover the question of whether Muslims are allowed to reside in non-Muslim majority countries under the condition of religious freedom. It encompassed an analysis of the major textual evidence on this topic, regardless of whether they argue for permissibility or prohibition. The focus is to engage with the seemingly contradictory arguments considering their authenticity, historical context and meaning, in the hope of coming close to, or advancing, the understanding of the religious opinion on the matter. Shaykh Zaini argued that emigration was mandatory under certain historical circumstances experienced by early companions, then it became advisory following the conquest of Mecca and the establishment of the religion.

Disputes between classical Muslim theologians are often spoken of in very abstract terms. What is often forgotten, however, is the human relationship that would have existed between such theologians. Through the example of the Shīʿī Hishām b. al-Ḥakam and the Ibāḍī ʿAbdallāh b. Yazīd al-Fazārī, I demonstrate how two theologians with striking doctrinal differences nevertheless maintained a very strong friendship, as evidenced by the mention of this friendship in various genres of literature. Such a friendship serves as a prompt to rethink our assumptions about how classical Muslim theologians interacted with each other and as a precedent on which to base intra-Muslim interactions today.

This presentation looked at narratives dealing with the experiences of female scholars within the Sunni Muslim community in the UK, with a focus on the South Asian community. The South Asian community is responsible for setting up many of the traditional Islamic learning institutions (darul ulums) in the UK for both male and female students. Many of these institutions will follow the same curriculum whereby students will study the same texts and subjects, yet female graduates often face greater challenges upon graduation. Often their education is questioned and their opportunities to serve their communities are more limited. This presentation highlighted some of those challenges through personal narratives taken from various studies conducted in the UK. Finally, it called for greater community participation in creating a more accepting space for female scholars and a more supportive community network so that they are able to better serve their communities, and the community is able to benefit from their knowledge and expertise.

Dr. Rajani explained the dynamics of the abovementioned Centre, explaining how scholars from various denominations come together and attempt to give unified responses to some of the questions and challenges facing Muslims today. Dr. Rajani clarified the processes and methods that the Centre employs to try and arrive at jointly agreed opinions, which are then disseminated in the form of online statements. Hitherto, the Centre has produces 43 statements, ranging from jurisprudential issues – like the permissibility of consuming stunned meat – to theological matters – like the finality of the prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The generally perceived notion/purpose of ijtihād is to provide a solution where there is no direct text on a particular issue. Given that within the theories of Islamic law, it is a well-accepted fact that an ijtihād would not necessarily negate another ijtihād on the same issue, one may arrive at the question of sanctity in relation to the fatwas issued as a result of different ijtihāds being carried out. This study therefore looks at whether the body of fatwas issued are any less in their sacredness as a result of differences and variations in ijtihādi conclusions. The study will follow a textual analysis and its scope falls within the broad sphere of theology. #fatwa #ijtihad #islamiclaw
