POPULARITY
Hear me out as I fondly remember the masterpiece of an album from Kendrick Lamar: 2015's "To Pimp a Butterfly", 10 years later ... except I'm only going to talk about the specific track that ALMOST got me fired, also 10 years ago to be exact: "King Kunta"! Was being stuffed elbow-to-elbow in a crammed elevator at work the best place to listen to this album full blast? Should the HR hottie have reported me because of my loud ass pro-black headphones bumping K. Dot?? IS IT TRUE THAT LIFE AIN'T SHIT BUT A FAT VAGINA AFTER ALL??? I was THIS close to getting pink-slipped by Kung Fu Kenny 10 yrs ago AND MORE on "King Kunta, how could ya?" | EP 136 of "AhhFuGGiT", UP NOW!!!

Born in Los Angeles' Crenshaw District, Terrace Martin found a love for hip-hop early on. The kids growing up around him were freestyling and playing in backyard shows. He grew up in a jazz household, and got his start as a saxophonist, too. With those two backgrounds, Terrace kicked off a career that would make him a trailblazing polymath in pop music. He's worked with rappers like Snoop Dogg, YG and Murs. He was heavily involved in Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, producing many songs on the album including the hit King Kunta. We're revisiting our conversation from 2017. At the time, he'd just released The Sounds of Crenshaw Volume 1 with his band, the Pollyseeds. In 2020, he released seven EPs – including Village Days, and Dinner Party late last year. When he joined us we talked about his thoughts on hip-hop, and jazz that's taught in academic settings. Plus, why working with Kendrick Lamar was so important to him.

Black On Both Sides Episode #76 Kunta had a home emergency requiring the essential services of Home Depot. Did you know that Home Depot is an essential business? You probably wouldn't think so until you have a leaking pipe during the apocolypse. Evangelicals want you to disregard your job and give it all to the lord. So if you have been holding on to that 10% thinking you needed to save it for a rainy day, don't fret. Just give it to the lord and he will provide. Kit and I are not tithing. So, there's that. King Kunta wants Trump to shut his mouth as an alternative from telling lies. As much as I think there is an honesty issue, I also feel like the regular joe has a responsibility to not poke the bear. Either way, Kunta is glad that there is an expert just to the side of Trump to fill in all of the gaps that Trump leaves. Black On Both Sides Episode #74 The Clippers had a home game? No, the Lakers had a home game? Whatever! I am not going to get into Los Angeles politics. The Lakers played the Clippers at home. King Kunta thinks it is comical how they try to dress up the Staples Center for the Clips. This will always be the house that Kobe (and Shaq) built. Meanwhile a coast away, one of the greatest fans of all time is getting disrespected. Spike Lee can’t come through the employee entrance of MSG. He has been doing this for decades. Oh well, not exactly racism, but really about another owner that is far from self aware. Zaya is officially here. Wade and Union are at the front of the progressive kid parade. I have softened my stance because this is obviously something that they are all extremely confident about. Kunta is still on the side of caution. And we both want to know why they haven’t permitted the outside kid to get some attention. The Democratic Primary is still alive for three hopefuls. Biden, Bernie, and… Why the hell are you still running. Give it up, third person. This is not for you. Dr. Drew was all over social media saying that the virus outbreak is not being presented correctly. He doesn’t believe the world should be in mass hysteria. We should all wash our hands a little more and stop coughing and sneezing into the air. Kunta thinks we are all going to get it. At least he feels like most of us will not feel the effects of getting it. But we are all going to get it. You get Corona, You get Corona, everybody gets Corona! As far as Trump this week, I am happy that his time in office has a painted a very clear picture of how inept all of the “officials’ and “experts” are. We are living in a world where no one truly knows anything. Some people are just really good at pretending they do. And we believe them. On this episode, we begin by talking about ways we probably should not celebrate Black History Month. Don't get us wrong we love King Kunta and everyone should see roots, but maybe kidnapping isn't the best way. We then tackle the issue of homelessness and housing insecurity. We use the voice of Ronald Davies to expose the inhuman nature of this growing crisis happening nationwide. We acknowledge Saturne Tchabong and Mason Foster for their phenomenal documentary on the crisis on homelessness and skid row, 3rd Street, which premiered at the Pan African Film Festival. On the topic of Black Film, we discuss The Photograph in relation to classic Black love stories. The question of "when do you shoot your shot and how much pressure can you apply?" comes up as we think about what these love films teach us about pursuing women. R.I.P. Welcome to Amazin’ Avenue Audio (The Show), the new/old favorite from Amazin’ Avenue editors Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore. Every year, Brian and Chris look back on some of their favorite music of the year. But, since the decade has wrapped up, Chris suggested an expanded look back. So, each host picked five records from the past decade to discuss. There is a Spotify playlist, which can be found here, which features 9/10 of the albums. The lone pick not on Spotify, Jim O’Rourke’s Simple Songs, is represented by this YouTube link to its first track, “Friends With Benefits”. For proper placement in the mix, play this between “King Kunta” and “Cold Slope.” Chris’s Picks: Parquet Courts - Light Up Gold Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly Wilco - Star Wars Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool Wand - Laughing Matter Brian’s Picks: R.E.M. - Collapse Into Now Jim O’Rourke - Simple Songs Dawn of Midi - Dysnomia Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer Jay Som - Anak Ko You can listen or subscribe to all of our wonderful Amazin’ Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. Kawhi has been crowned the King in the North by King Kunta. Hopefully he will stay the King. Meanwhile Game of Thrones is over and Kunta cancelled his trial membership to HBO. They have to recognize that they have far more trial subscriptions during the GOT season. Chernobyl just isn’t holding Kunta down. Tyler the Creator and YG have new albums. So I guess we can say it was a mediocre music week. Kunta feels as though Tyler is a genius and YG is a solid dude that doesn’t read. Have you been keeping up with Tony Robbins? In one week this man gets exposed for being a sexual miscreant and a potential racist. Of all the people that have been cancelled, I finally see the value. Through all the weeks of BOBS, I have been trying to tell Kunta that racism in the States is bland compared to abroad. He finally listens because he happened to be in the company of a couple of drunk Asians that compared level of Asian by skin color. You guessed. The lighter the skin, the higher the level in their ranking system.

Episode #69 I continue my dysfunctional family tour with my other Network brothers, B-Honest and King Kunta, the hosts from the Black On Both Sides Podcast. We attempt to try and figure out where our black culture came from, the purpose of black culture, and what we need to eliminate from the culture. A mixture of opinions and nonsense. We didn't get to an answer, but both sides made their point.

Episode #4 Supreme is the only way I like my pizza and my courts. King Kunta knows far more about the politics of the legal system, but that has never stopped me from having a good argument. Justice Kennedy has stepped down. And with that put the fate of the legal country firmly in the hands of King Kunta’s arch nemesis. I’m not so sure this is a problem for us considering Reagan put Kennedy in place and look how that turned out for “us”. We discuss the ramifications of the resignation and the pending assignment. Other than that we make a bold prediction on the quality of the Drake album. Don’t forget to vote on today’s Rate The Racism poll. [yop_poll id=1]

See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
