Crowdfunded games still happen, but there was a surge of them in the 2010's. For better or worse, many, many notable games were enthusiastically funded by fans. Yooka-Laylee, Shovel Knight, Shenmue 3, Star Citizen. We wanted to look back and remember that turbulent time of high hopes and occasional unmet expectations.MORE PLACES TO FIND USCrubscribe ► https://bit.ly/CrubcastGet the show early and get exclusive content at our Patreon ► https://www.patreon.com/crubOur Crubcasts are recorded LIVE at https://www.twitch.tv/crub_official every Tuesday at 7pm Eastern, with EXCLUSIVE Pre- and Post-ShowsJoin our Discord ► https://crub.org/joinBird App ► https://twitter.com/crubofficialPodcasts are available on Apple, Google, Spotify, and other platforms are available at ► https://crub.orgSHOW NOTESLinks for some of the games we mention, in case you wanna look and go "Huh"Lobodestroyo: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lefthanded/lobodestroyo-3d-action-platformer-gameClive n Wrench: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1094720/Clive_N_Wrench/Godus: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/22cans/project-godusTODAY'S CRUBCAST HOSTSBrody: https://www.youtube.com/@RACROXJustin: https://www.youtube.com/@WorldFamousJtart9Moriarty: https://www.youtube.com/@reallycoolSean: https://www.youtube.com/@WolfkaosaunCHAPTERS00:00 How Yooka-Laylee bankrupted Sean (real)11:26 Issues with early access / dripfeeding the content updates26:20 Why are we willing to pay for unfinished games?35:54 Game development isn't a respected process42:20 The upsides to crowdfunding games55:35 TheCrazyEven's Crubscriber Question of the Week
We have on our first guest and we talk about Kickstarter games, including why you should definitely get them...and also why you should never get them!POST RECORDING: Unfortunately we lost a decent chunk of Toms recording due to network issues that we didn't know until editing. So, in case you are wondering why we talked tons rather than Tom, it's because we lost his audio so we had to edit around it. :(
Sometimes the simplest games are the ones you play the most. Viking See-Saw is a new game from Itten Games and game designer Dr. Reinerkunitia. I'm a big fan of this Japanese boardgame company. They make beautiful small games that are deceptively simple and surprisingly fun. Viking See-Saw is the first game from their new Funbrick series of games.
Another of Top X list this week. We have backed a lot of KS games. A lot. So we have some favorites and we wanted to share what those are. Of course there may be some honorable mentions, a few ;) I bet there is a certain game that will not surprise you for being on this list if you are a return listener. If you are new listener, we thank you first off, hope you hear about some new to you games that sound interesting! As always thank you so much for listening to the podcast. In this episode, Darin and Daron welcome special guest Max Jamelli back to the show to talk about the best (and worst) Kickstarter games. Also, Max's game Lords of Baseball is now live on Kickstarter! Listen to the episode to find out how to get Board Games Are For Losers promo cards when you back it.
So in this episode we talk about some movies and board game news like the new game by Funko... Rear Window! We also review the two player game Radlands, the button shy game Skulls of Sedlec, the solo game Ironhelm, and look at the game that many have said could dethrone Lords of Waterdeep, AEG's Meeples & Monsters! Then we look at the Top 10 games we are most excited for the Kickstarter Fairy to bring to us! Email us at Show@MainlyGames.com Or check out our links at www.MainlyGames.com

In this episode... Kellye and Aaron discuss the Kickstarter games that arrived this year, and also share the list of what they are still waiting to receive. We have small corrections worth mentioning for this episode: Kellye mentions the next https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8_AqOV42h0 (Garphill Game series), but couldn't remember the name. That series will be https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/350316/wayfarers-south-tigris (Wayfarers), Scholars, and Inventors of the South Tigris, due to release in 2022, 2023, and 2024 respectively. Kellye misnamed a Kickstarter incentive called "https://www.kickstarter.com/make-100 (Make 100)" when mentioning https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brintown/tiny-paper-dungeons (Paper App Dungeon) (she mistakenly called it "Make 1000"). Paper App Dungeon had over four thousand backers, hence her confusion. The Quest-A-Day calendar was lost in the mail, but we have now received a replacement! Today's episode is all about how crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter have completely changed the board game industry. Crowdfunding is a fantastic way for businesses and individuals to raise money for individual or business needs, like getting a new project off the ground and funded. Back in the day, only big companies had the money and resources to create board game products, but crowdfunding completely changed the way these types of projects were completed. Thankfully, now with the sites like Kickstarter, so many more and new products and projects are being able to get made and into the market. Today, Dan and Jim talk about how the industry has changed, and the positive and negative effects because of it. More positive now, with the UK slowly going back to normal, I'm able to exercise a lot more at the gym and get my massage therapy fortnightly. As a result, the stress is much lower despite work being hard as ever! :-) After some great channel updates of content released and incoming I give a shout-out to Shelf Clutter who you should support under #supportsmallcreators if you want news on Kickstarter Games. Then I briefly talk about my thoughts where I see gamers on social media constantly under-estimate how much weight a game has. How is Anachrony a medium weight game? How is Architects of the West Kingdom light? Should there be a super-heavy category? These are my thoughts!

Emma and Gil welcome Anya Combs and Luke Crane from Kickstarter to discuss how crowdfunding is changing, especially in light of recent events. Anya: anya@kickstarter.com, games@kickstarter.com, @anyayna Luke: @burning_luke, burningwheel.com Note that this episode was recorded on March 25, 2020, so if we talk about things happening "a few weeks ago," we're referring to late February/early March. This wouldn't normally be an important detail, but things are changing a lot quickly these days. SHOW NOTES 0m00s: Playtest safely online with Gil and Emma! 1m28s: For those who have never heard it, the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" set a template for punk rock's sound well before its time. (Explicit language warning) 3m52s: More info about the Burning Wheel roleplaying system. 8m32s: The original Alien Frontiers and Cards Against Humanity projects. Both were modest successes. Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Shenmue were much larger successes. 9m48s: The original Kingdom Death: Monster was a wild success, but the second edition was one of the largest Kickstarter Games campaigns ever run. 9m56s: We recorded this episode before Frosthaven launched. As of the time of this episode's release, it has raised over $7 million USD. 10m31s: Gil's Kickstarter projects are all visible here. 12m39s: The Dispel Dice Kickstarter project. 17m23s: The F*** Yeah Dice Kickstarter project (Explicit language warning, of course). 16m56s: Itten made the unique game Stonehenge and the Sun. Oink and Bouken don't have any Kickstarter projects, but their games are worth your attention for their distinctive look and style. Luke also brings up Bouken's game Diet & Friends. 17m17s: W.M. Akers has a series of baseball simulators called Deadball. 18m23s: You can find Emma's weekly news show on Twitch every Friday at 2 pm Pacific. 20m00s: Here's the Fantastic Factories Kickstarter project. Here's the Kickstarter for Coloma, designed by Jonny Pac, who was on Ludology 221: The Pac Less Traveled. 20m36s: Here's the Gladius Kickstarter project. 21m51s: More info about the Skylanders video game, which discontinued support in 2017. 24m42s: Here's the Multiverse Kickstarter project. (Incidentally, if you're interested in a platform similar to Multiverse, check out Roll20). 27m34s: More info about the Jackbox party games. 28m20s: The Spaceteam Kickstarter project (Note that this is for the original video game, not the card game inspired by it). 30m10s: More info about Twine. We go more into detail about this platform in Ludology 217: What IF? 30m43s: More info about AVOWEL, the mobile version of Wordsy. 31m05s: The latest Chronicles of Crime Kickstarter. 32m46s: Commands & Colors by Richard Borg is a family of outstanding light wargames that includes BattleLore and Memoir '44. 34m33s: More information about Kickstarter's Make100 and ZineQuest initiatives. 43m16s: More information about the newest God of War game https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_(2018_video_game). 43m36s: Animal Crossing! Hoo hoo! That's a link to more info about New Horizons, the newest game in the series. There's a lot of interesting discussion going on about the game and how timely it is, how its soothing imagery is perfect for the current times, and how it offers an escapist fantasy (literally escaping to a desert island) to people who are stuck at home. 47m13s: Ankh, the newest CMON game, is at over $1 million USD from about 14,000 backers at the time of this episode release. Tapeworm has not yet launched at the time of this episode release. 46m45s: Pax Pamir's most recent Kickstarter. In today's episode Bruce and Josh take a different format in which they combine the games they have been playing recently with some of the great kickstarters that are going on while wrapping up with some amazing board game business news! The combination format is because both Bruce and Josh work in higher education and this episode was recorded and published at the end of April which is a notoriously eventful season in education. That being said, both of the guys made it a priority to get you useful information so you can make informed decisions for your gaming group. Specific Games Discussed are: Planet by Blue OrangeCryptid by Osprey GamesNusfjord by Mayfiar Games Kickstarters Discussed: Anachrony: Fractures of Time Expansion and Infinity Box by Mindclash GamesTerraforming Mars: Turmoil Expansion by Indie Games Studio: Stronghold Games News Discussed Newest Version of Choose Your Own Adventure Game coming out "War With The Evil Power Master" by Z-Man Games"Hobby Game Sales total $1.5 Billion for 2018" - IcV2 ( https://icv2.com/articles/news/view/43024/hobby-game-sales-total-1-5-billion-2018)Kickstarter Games category surpasses $1 Billion Pledged ( https://www.kickstarter.com/blog/1-billion-and-counting-pledged-to-games) To learn more about Board Game Impact you can: Join the Patreon: Board Game Impact Like the Facebook Page: Board Game Impact Instagram: @boardgameimpact Email: boardgameimpact@gmail.com Transcription 00:00:08 - 00:05:01 Welcome to board game impact in today's episode Josh and I talk about gains you've been playing recently as well as talk through even more kick starters that are really exciting and then share some really phenomenal news for you about the board. Game industry that you're definitely not gonna wanna miss the end of the episode. Stay tuned. Welcome to board game. Impact, if this is your first time, visiting board game impact, I welcome you. So what we seek to do. Here is to combine our passion for board games with our we both work in education, and so we're bringing a research focus to the work that we do for your benefit, so a you can make informed decisions based on what we're playing what we're seeing for the benefit of your gaming group. My name is Bruce Brown and I'm joined with Josh Isringhausen and together, we are board game impact and so we got a little bit in store for you today. I'll be honest, it's going to be a little different Josh just talked about this a second ago. 'cause like I just mentioned, we both work in education in higher education, different universities. And when recording this right now it's the end of April, and guess what? There's a lot going on, on college campuses at the end of April, that being said, we're actually going to be splitting as of you. This is not your first time. Sometimes we do a full set. Kment on gains, we've been playing, and then another segment on Kickstarter or deep dive into a game. And we're actually going to be doing is combining those two things and some actually going to be talking about some kick stars that are going on that we haven't talked about, and Josh is going to be sharing about some games that he's been playing that being said, I am going to get kicked off with a non Kickstarter but it's a game I have played and I'm very excited for it to finally hit the market almost seven months after I, I played it and that is planet by blue orange games. So planet is a game. It's very different than other games in which think of a rubik's, cube holding in your hand. But instead of that it's like a ball and what you're doing is a magnetic ball and throughout the game, you're going to be picking up different tiles and adding them to this ball to literally make your planet, and then you're going to be scoring different animals that are gonna be splayed out in front of all the players for the different types of character. Six of the planet, they got in your hands.
