Send us a textAlex Bregman homered in his first Spring Training game for #redsox. He also went 3-3. #Mets Juan Soto went oppo toco deep in his first AB with his new team. #yankees Aaron Boone got a contract extension and Giancarlo Stanton has tennis elbow. In both elbows? Frankie Montas now of the Mets is injured. Justin Turner goes to #Cubs. Does that give them an edge? ABS made its debut in Spring Training and teams are testing it out. Yankees also rescinded the facial hair policy. It lasted 49 years. #reds had a longer time not allowing whiskers - from 1902-1999! Marge Schott put a stop to it of all people! We also dream that a salary cap attempt by owners backfires into a salary floor with NO salary cap! It could happen but probably won't. Deadball era pitchers like Christy Mathewson, Lefty Grove, Rube Waddell, Cy Young made it tough on hitters and were a bigger part of hitters failures than pithcers were given credit for. Hitters used heavy bats and their approach to hitting was limited once foul balls were counted as strikes - which they were not until 1901 in the NL and 1903 in the AL. We're so glad the deadball era is past but starting pitchers today are a dying breed.Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! Check them out on Spotify or Apple Music! Send us a textThere was enough news for us to talk about what went on this week. Alex Bregman #redsox was the biggest player news. #Angels Rendon is out of action for the season. Again. Before it even started! Who will be the dark horse teams in #MLB 2025? How about caps for the HOF inductees? Is C.C. really a #Yankees player? Then there's the Deadball era which occurred from 1901-1919. It was not completely consistent and happened for a variety of reasons. Ty Cobb led #americanleague with 9 home runs in 1909! Offense did improve with the change in #baseballs in 1910 but pitchers found new ways to cut, slather and doctor baseballs.Note: Gavy Cravath actually did lead the lead in home runs 6 times during the Deadball era. Rick Reiff is our guest this week to discuss his essay in the Fall 2024 Baseball Research Journal, "Gavy Cravath's Hall-Worthy 200 Home Runs." Cravath, a late arrival, played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues and led the National League in home runs in six of those seasons, from 1913 to 1919. Cravath also led the Senior Circuit in RBI twice, in on base percentage twice and slugging percentage three times. Despite being the preeminent home run hitter in the Deadball Era, Cravath remains on the outside looking in for Hall of Fame induction. Reiff makes the case to remedy this.In part 2, Craig and Rex talk about the Rays playing their 2025 regular season at the Yankees' spring training home, the latest billion-dollar boondoggle to return the Houston Astrodome, an aging eyesore, to usefulness and how to turn a juice box to an ice box.Errata: Craig, its the Donner Party, not the Bonner Party. You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books through our store at Bookshop.org. Dr. Travis Stern's new book, "Ballplayers on Stage: Baseball, Melodrama, and Theatrical Celebrity in the Deadball Era" (Univ. of Tennessee Press, 2024) explores the relationship between professional baseball and professional theater in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Stern joins us in this episode to talk about his book and the how baseball and the theater contributed to the rise of the American culture, culminating with Babe Ruth's emergence as a national hero in the early 1920s. Stern is an Associate Professor of Theater Arts at Bradley University.Travis Stern on Bluesky (@travisstern.bsky.social)Travis Stern at Bradley UniversityIn Part Two, Craig went to a Duster show and talks about Duster, the show and the unusual opening act, Dirty Art Club.Errata: At one point Stern mentions seeing the "Yankees and Mets." On January 26, 1963, Alarmed by such increased home run numbers across the Majors, Ford Frick convinced the owners to agree to having the strike zone widened before the 1963 season. The zone will stretch from the top of the batter's shoulders to the bottom of the knees. The committee hopes the return to the 1950s strike zone will result in a decrease in runs scored. The results will exceed the committee's expectations, in 1962 teams average 4.46 runs per game, in 1963 that number dropped to 3.95 and will hover around 4, until 67 when it drops to 3.77 and then in 1968 it was deadball like 3.42 runs per game. The Indians ‘63 staff would set a new AL record while being the first staff to K over 1000 in a season. Led by Sam McDowell and rookies Sonny Siebert and Luis Tiant, they would go on to set a new record in ‘64, with over 1100 Ks. They would set record numbers and lead the AL in Ks from ‘64-68, a feat still not matched! In 1968 we all know Bob Gibson had a record 1.12 ERA, but 6 other starters had ERAs under 2. Which was remarkable. Don Drysdale set a record with the longest scoreless inning streak ever. Denny McLain became baseball's first 30-game winner in a generation. Denny McLain was the last pitcher to win 30 in 1968, including a 1.96 ERA. McLain and Lolich will face off twice in the 1968 World Series and Gibson will beat him twice, McLain will win game 6 going the distance on 2 days rest and after the “Year of the Pitcher” in 1968, the strike zone will be tweaked again, and the mound will be lowered from 15 inches to 10 inches and by 1970 the league would be back up to 4.46 runs per game. It has been long speculated that Frick, a Friend of Ruth increased the strike zone so no one else could dimmish the Babe. Here is Frick on Tops on Sports . . . .

Founded in 1969 the Montreal Expos were a source of pride for its city, but with mismanaged leadership and bad luck, never saw the mountain top. Due to financial woes, the Expos were relocated to Washington D. C., and renamed the Nationals. Although the Montreal Expos are no longer an active MLB franchise, the city and its fans continue to have a strong connection to their baseball past.

A recent acquisition by our Milford House Press imprint, J.B. Manheim brings the murky past of old-time baseball to life in "The Federal Case," the latest release in The Deadball Files series. Over a century ago, Major League Baseball and the upstart Federal League were embroiled in a legal dispute. An ancient legal document falls into the hands of night-schooled lawyer Andy Dennum, which pits him against baseball's establishment, the firm that hired him, and a mystery out of his own past. At state is the viability of baseball's business model, and Andy's career. "You win some, you lose some. Some get rained out." Sunbury Press Books welcomes J.B. Manheim to the program, and Milford House will re-release his previous series of works, "This Never Happened," "Doubleday Doubletake," and "The Gamekeepers." Professor Emeritus at George Washington University, J.B. Manheim developed the world's first degree-granting program in Political Communication, and was founding director of the School of Media & Public Affairs. His love of baseball began watching Dizzy Dean on the Game of the Week, and watching games at Cleveland Municipal Stadium with his grandfather. Manheim is also a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, the Internet Baseball Writers Assocation of America and the Authors Guild.

Baseball's "Deadball Era" lasted from 1900 to 1919, so noted as Major League Baseball used a softer ball. In addition, the teams often played in stadiums with larger field surfaces, so games were won by timely hitting, bunting and strategy. Home runs were a rarity. During that period, a number of individual, single-season records were established, that are unlikely to be broken as the game has evolved. Ronald Waldo, author of eight books on baseball history, especially of the early 20th Century, highlights some of these in his new book for Sunbury Press, "Deadball Trailblazers: Single-Season Records of the Modern Era." Many of these names will be known to baseball fans, if at least in passing: Napolean Lajoie's standout 1901 season, "Happy Jack" Chesbro's 41 wins, Ty Cobb's (then) record-breaking 96 stolen bases, and John "Chief" Wilson's 36 triples. The tales and personalities are brought back to life by Waldo, which include Rube Waddell's brilliant 1904 season, along with instances of his erratic behavior. Then there were exercises in futility: Jack Nabors' 19 consecutive losses for a terrible Philadelphia A's team in 1916, and perhaps the most perplexing, John Gochnaur's 1903 record of 98 errors. Ronald Waldo joins Lawrence Knorr on today's Sunbury Press Books Show to tell some of these stories, and look back at a different time in baseball, and American History. His other works include, "The 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates: Tragedy and Triumph," "The Battling Bucs of 1925," and biographies of old-time players Fred Clarke and Kiki Cuyler. Each of Waldo's preceding books on the Deadball Era has receive nominations for the Larry Ritter Book Award. He lives in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
What better way for Josh and Tom to celebrate being together and recording together for the first time than firing up the WhatIf simulator and drafting all-star teams out of the Deadball Era? Tom's voice is clearly dead from the Jawbreaker concert the night before, both of us are clearly hung over, and we had to dig deep and pull together some guys we'd never heard of to fill out a 25-man roster under our true backup and reliever criteria... Sit back and enjoy!

A lot of rambling about Strat-O-Matic baseball, a fantastic tabletop simulation/RPG of the US national pastime. Also a brief discussion about a great baseball rpg called “Deadball.” Links: Strat-O-Matic: https://www.strat-o-matic.com (although I discussed the baseball board game, they have football, basketball, and hockey as well) Deadball by W. It’s a semi-Valentine’s Day episode with a lot of fun takes on some of the most recent topics for this week! Bowski has ANOTHER conspiracy, the latest Free Agents & Trades, Spring Training, the PDL(?), and a whole lot of other randomness. DH has a quick game called “Caught Stealin, Or Catchin’ Some Feelin’s”, for Rube & Bowski…. Will Bowski remain undefeated, or will Rube reign supreme?! On this episode, the guys discuss Jared Porter and the Mets situation, MLB Twitter catching fire because of it, finally some free agent action, and the newest segment of DeadBall.
We break down the White Sox acquisition of Liam Hendricks putting them in a position to be the early favorites in the AL. Would you rather be a fan of a team that always sucked or a consistent loser in the playoffs? Everyone loves a good walk-in song so the boys decided to have a draft of their very favorites. They end with a Deadball segment debunking the narrative that Mickey Mantle was clocked at 3.1 from home to first.
Deadball Era pitching was bonkers, statistically. Guys threw 300+ innings on the regular and then retired after a couple of seasons. Jeff and Cam have a tall task as Cam gives you the top-5 Reds pitchers from that era of over 100 years ago. Emma and Gil welcome Anya Combs and Luke Crane from Kickstarter to discuss how crowdfunding is changing, especially in light of recent events. Anya: anya@kickstarter.com, games@kickstarter.com, @anyayna Luke: @burning_luke, burningwheel.com Note that this episode was recorded on March 25, 2020, so if we talk about things happening "a few weeks ago," we're referring to late February/early March. This wouldn't normally be an important detail, but things are changing a lot quickly these days. SHOW NOTES 0m00s: Playtest safely online with Gil and Emma! 1m28s: For those who have never heard it, the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" set a template for punk rock's sound well before its time. (Explicit language warning) 3m52s: More info about the Burning Wheel roleplaying system. 8m32s: The original Alien Frontiers and Cards Against Humanity projects. Both were modest successes. Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Shenmue were much larger successes. 9m48s: The original Kingdom Death: Monster was a wild success, but the second edition was one of the largest Kickstarter Games campaigns ever run. 9m56s: We recorded this episode before Frosthaven launched. As of the time of this episode's release, it has raised over $7 million USD. 10m31s: Gil's Kickstarter projects are all visible here. 12m39s: The Dispel Dice Kickstarter project. 17m23s: The F*** Yeah Dice Kickstarter project (Explicit language warning, of course). 16m56s: Itten made the unique game Stonehenge and the Sun. Oink and Bouken don't have any Kickstarter projects, but their games are worth your attention for their distinctive look and style. Luke also brings up Bouken's game Diet & Friends. 17m17s: W.M. Akers has a series of baseball simulators called Deadball. 18m23s: You can find Emma's weekly news show on Twitch every Friday at 2 pm Pacific. 20m00s: Here's the Fantastic Factories Kickstarter project. Here's the Kickstarter for Coloma, designed by Jonny Pac, who was on Ludology 221: The Pac Less Traveled. 20m36s: Here's the Gladius Kickstarter project. 21m51s: More info about the Skylanders video game, which discontinued support in 2017. 24m42s: Here's the Multiverse Kickstarter project. (Incidentally, if you're interested in a platform similar to Multiverse, check out Roll20). 27m34s: More info about the Jackbox party games. 28m20s: The Spaceteam Kickstarter project (Note that this is for the original video game, not the card game inspired by it). 30m10s: More info about Twine. We go more into detail about this platform in Ludology 217: What IF? 30m43s: More info about AVOWEL, the mobile version of Wordsy. 31m05s: The latest Chronicles of Crime Kickstarter. 32m46s: Commands & Colors by Richard Borg is a family of outstanding light wargames that includes BattleLore and Memoir '44. 34m33s: More information about Kickstarter's Make100 and ZineQuest initiatives. 43m16s: More information about the newest God of War game https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_of_War_(2018_video_game). 43m36s: Animal Crossing! Hoo hoo! That's a link to more info about New Horizons, the newest game in the series. There's a lot of interesting discussion going on about the game and how timely it is, how its soothing imagery is perfect for the current times, and how it offers an escapist fantasy (literally escaping to a desert island) to people who are stuck at home. 47m13s: Ankh, the newest CMON game, is at over $1 million USD from about 14,000 backers at the time of this episode release. Tapeworm has not yet launched at the time of this episode release. 46m45s: Pax Pamir's most recent Kickstarter. If you want to hear him GM, check out the actual play podcast Story Roost and its first story arc, The Unmarked. (Explicit language warning) 59m17s: DRUGGIES AND BULLIES BEWARE BULLYPROOF Kickstarter project. 1h00m30s: OLDIE BINGO Kickstarter project.
Episode 145 of the Drunk in a Graveyard podcast is here and this week, Robin and Scotty get lost in the weeds chatting about The Room (no, not the Tommy Wiseau version) and the pros and cons of instant babies, microwaving your nutsack and more. New release We Summon the Darkness starring Johnny Knoxville is up next and it's a heavy metal Satanic Panic romp that actually includes the "heavy metal" part, unlike other films that have explored this subject matter. Rounding out the show is DeadBall, a Japanese splatter gore comedy film about baseballs, babes in hot pants, some distinctly problematic elements, and then a boys in prison trope(??). ****************************************************** “Party Crowd 2” by Kolezan is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Bong Hit” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Breath in and out Cigarette” by OnionEye is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 “Metal Loop” by thunderstorm10 is licensed under CC BY 3.0 “Scream 1” by TheSubber13 is licensed under CC BY-NC 3.0 "Death Metal Track" is licensed under CC BY 3.0 ****************************************************** Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel and like us on facebook, Instagram, and on Twitter. Podcasts are a great medium for any subject that you can think of. They are popular and there are always new ones popping up. With so many being made it can be difficult to find great podcasts. Here are a few indie podcasts that need to be shared and listened to. Overdue was the first podcast I ever listened to and therefore holds a special place for me. But make no mistake that these hosts are working to make a quality podcast that anyone can listen to. The premise of the show is that one of the hosts reads a book that they have not read before, then they discuss the book. The hosts are two college friends who have a great repour. You want to sit in on the conversation with them. It is a great way to learn about books you might not have heard of or considered on your own. Rants and reason is a podcast that we need right now. There is so much political division in this country that trying to find common ground can be difficult. However, that is exactly what this show aims to do. The two hosts, one conservative and the other liberal, discuss several aspects of politics. The hosts are friends who try to show you can have a civil conversation even if you do not agree with one another. This show should be spread far and wide in an attempt to help heal some of the wounds brought on by the last few years. That’s Delightful is another political podcast but they have a liberal lean. They discuss current events with their own commentary. The hosts are a doctor, a social worker, and a radio host. They are hilarious to listen to and always bring a laugh. It has quickly become one of my favorite podcasts. Deadball is a podcast that looks at the lives of players that were lost early due to misfortune. You do not need to be a fan of baseball to enjoy these life stories. They are glimpses into, most times, tragic lives that started with so much promise and ended horribly. The hosts are knowledgeable and are excellent storytellers. Death’s Door podcast is a true crime show that looks specifically at death penalty cases. I am fortunate enough to have listened to the show since its launch. The original host is a lawyer who takes the time to explain aspects of these cases that are generally not common knowledge. The show has recently added a second host and changed up their format. Grown Up Kids is a new to me podcast. This wife team is systematically watching every Disney movie that has been made. This podcast is can open you up to movies that you have not heard of or have not seen. They give you an overview of the movie, usually with a guest host, and pick their favorite parts and characters. It is a nice format with a great deal of information. Appointment Television has one of the hosts of Overdue, which is how I discovered it. They give you all the news on television and have segments covering different types of television. One of the best segments they do is tv book club. They pick a season of a show and you can watch it with them. It is a great way for them to get involved with their audience and to have their audience engage as well. They Walk Among Us is another favorite of mine. This is a true crime podcast from England. The husband and wife team that produces this show are fantastic. The episodes are well researched and written. They give you good amounts of information without overwhelming you. They have been at this for about two years so they have a great backlog to listen to. Sense & Theory podcast was recently recommended to me and I think it is another that is needed in our political climate. The two hosts are friends, one raised liberal while the other was raised conservative. From what I can gather they are center with right and left leanings. They have intelligent and informative conversations on current politics. They also offer the history behind the politics of the US. All of these shows being something to the table that is worth listening to. They are hardworking hosts that put time and e...

The Chicago Cubs were one of the luckiest teams at the start of the 1900s, according to former Associated Press writer Hal Bock, author of the book, The Last Chicago Cubs Dynasty. Bock covers the entire Cubs reign to the World Series from 1906 to 1910, complete with the biographies of some of the more illustrious characters in Major League Baseball History. Bock talks about the legendary double-play combination of Tinker to Evers to Chance, whether Cubs catcher Johnny Kling should be held responsible for bringing bad luck by leaving the team for a promising billiards career, and what the "Merkle boner" did for the 1908 playoffs to send the Cubs back to the World Series. Cincinnati Enquirer Reds beat writer C. Trent Rosecrans welcomes author Dan Leavitt to the C Dot Show, as the two discuss his new book “In Pursuit of Pennants: Baseball Operations from Deadball to Moneyball.” We talked about how the role has changed over time, as well as his rankings on his blog of the Top 25 general managers of all time, including current Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty, who comes in at No. 15. Bob Howsam, GM of the Big Red Machine, is No. 4. But first, C. Trent sits down with fellow Enquirer beat writer John Fay to discuss the Reds’ spring training through the middle of March.
