This episode is packed with valuable insights on leadership, accountability, and the power of taking the leap. Don't miss out on this inspiring conversation!
This week's guest is Luke Crane and we get into the philosophy behind TTRPG creation. We talk about making games as a teen, creating his games Burning Wheel, Mouse Guard and Torchbearer. We talk about his LARP Inheritance, and Luke and Steve playing it together at Gen Con 2023. Follow Luke Crane: Website--Flaming blood drips from the ceiling onto narrow ledges over a pool of fire-blood that'll stick to you like napalm. Trap! A portcullis drops down in the doorway you came through, cutting you off from escape. The ledges collapse underneath you. Jump!On a stationary center plinth is orc lawyer Janet Reno Nevada Esquire, wearing a pantsuit with heels. She's chained to a massive lectern where the Book ov Blood & Fire rests. She's bleeding fire, yelling her true name and the name of her true love (who's somewhere nearby). You can heal Janet's magical wounds to calm her down, but to break the curse you must bring her true love before her. She wields the oversized Book ov Blood & Fire like a flail to knock you into the pool, or flings pages for a ranged attack. If a page hits you, make a mental save (with a solid debate argument) or suffer The Rules: When you bleed, your blood becomes fire. You must say your true name and the name of your true love. You become cursed if you read from the book.Art: Tiger Wizard Words: Steve AlbertsonStory by: Andrew Bellury, Steve Albertson, Luke CraneANNOUNCEMENTSAll Dwarf drawings are in and we'll be announcing the winners very soon!Dungeon Cats pre-launch page is now live on the Epic Level's Kickstarter!Games Omnivorous' FRONTIER SCUM Kickstarter is live now, and completely funded! We'll be podcasting live at Gamehole Con in Madison on Oct. 19th- 24th. Luke Crane, best known for the Burning Wheel RPG, and recently promoted to Vice President and Head of Community at Kickstarter, was forced to resign from his position at Kickstarter, over the Perfect RPG Fiasco. The Perfect RPG went up in flames when it was revealed that Crane had snuck Adam Koebel in the project without the knowledge of other involved creators. Koebel, co-designer of Dungeon World, fell from grace in 2020 when he "broadcast a TTRPG scenario involving in-fiction sexual assault live on Twitch." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tavernchat/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tavernchat/support

Emma and Gil welcome Anya Combs and Luke Crane from Kickstarter to discuss how crowdfunding is changing, especially in light of recent events. Anya: anya@kickstarter.com, games@kickstarter.com, @anyayna Luke: @burning_luke, burningwheel.com Note that this episode was recorded on March 25, 2020, so if we talk about things happening "a few weeks ago," we're referring to late February/early March. This wouldn't normally be an important detail, but things are changing a lot quickly these days. SHOW NOTES 0m00s: Playtest safely online with Gil and Emma! 1m28s: For those who have never heard it, the MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" set a template for punk rock's sound well before its time. (Explicit language warning) 3m52s: More info about the Burning Wheel roleplaying system. 8m32s: The original Alien Frontiers and Cards Against Humanity projects. Both were modest successes. Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Shenmue were much larger successes. 9m48s: The original Kingdom Death: Monster was a wild success, but the second edition was one of the largest Kickstarter Games campaigns ever run. 9m56s: We recorded this episode before Frosthaven launched. As of the time of this episode's release, it has raised over $7 million USD. 10m31s: Gil's Kickstarter projects are all visible here. 12m39s: The Dispel Dice Kickstarter project. 17m23s: The F*** Yeah Dice Kickstarter project (Explicit language warning, of course). 16m56s: Itten made the unique game Stonehenge and the Sun. Akers has a series of baseball simulators called Deadball. 18m23s: You can find Emma's weekly news show on Twitch every Friday at 2 pm Pacific. 20m00s: Here's the Fantastic Factories Kickstarter project. Hoo hoo! That's a link to more info about New Horizons, the newest game in the series. There's a lot of interesting discussion going on about the game and how timely it is, how its soothing imagery is perfect for the current times, and how it offers an escapist fantasy (literally escaping to a desert island) to people who are stuck at home. 47m13s: Ankh, the newest CMON game, is at over $1 million USD from about 14,000 backers at the time of this episode release.

When people talk about games, video games usually get all the attention. But tabletop games shouldn’t be ignored, especially since Kickstarter game projects have brought in one billion dollars with tabletop games making up 69 percent of pledges. We speak to Luke Crane, Head of Games at Kickstarter, to discuss the appeal of tabletop gaming and the popularity of Kickstarter board games. Want to hear more from us? Sign up for our newsletter.

We all grow up playing board games and card games, and now those games are growing up as well. I check out BostonFIG (festival of independent games), where a new generation of indie board game designers is reimagining what we can do with dice, cards and plastic game pieces. I also talk with Shari and Jenni Spiro of AdMagic -- the company that can make unorthodox games like Cards Against Humanity and Exploding Kittens into household names. Plus, Dylan McKeefe at NYU's Game Incubator, and Luke Crane at Kickstarter explain why this is the perfect time for indie games to thrive.Learn more about your ad choices. Important note: It seems conventional on other podcasts I listen, to mention explicit language - in case your kids are around while you listen or something. There are a few F-words in this episode. I apologise I forgot to mention it in the intro to the episode. This week on the podcast we geek out about tabletop roleplaying games (and a bunch of other stuff - don't feel left out if you don't play tabletop roleplaying games) with an awesome guest: Luke Crane. Luke had won multiple Origins Awards for Best Roleplaying Games in 2006 for his first system Burning Wheel and again in 2008 for MouseGuard. He also designed several other games such as Burning Empires, FreeMarket (with Jared Sorensen) and recently Torchbearer. Luke regularly talks about game design as a variety of events and conventions. Last but certainly not least, Luke is also the Head of Games for Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding website. He gets to support thriving game designers bring their projects to life thanks to the support of fans on the popular crowdfunding platform. Game Design is Mind Control: Presented by Luke Crane and Jared Sorensen from way back in 2011. The art of game design is to induce your players to behave in bizarre, irrational ways that they otherwise would not. Join us as we demonstrate how rules make you perform all sorts of ridiculous acts. And if you don’t believe us, you will by the end of the seminar! Origins 2007 Round Table with Chris Hanrahan, Fred Hicks, and Kenneth Hite 0:38 - Before talking about Origins, I briefly discuss the ENnies. This show, along with The Sons of Kryos, The Godzilla Gaming Podcast, Yog Radio, and Fear the Boot, has been nominated for Best Podcast. 4:01 - The Sons of Kryos say hi. 4:14 - Chris Hanrahan (of 2d6 Feet In a Random Direction) and I corner Fred Hicks and Kenneth Hite to talk about our time at Origins, starting with our great dinner at the Burgundy Room. 7:25 - With that out of the way, Fred gives us the scoop on the Indie Press Revolution booth, while I talk about the joy of giving Luke Crane his Origins Award for Burning Empires. This led to a discussion of this year's voting procedure for the Origins Award and how important activism was. 12:08 - Ken talks about carry, Aces and Eights, and Witch Hunter. 23:23 - Prompted by Ken, Fred discusses his time at the IPR booth, focusing on Spirit of the Century and Don't Rest You Head. I mention Battlestations in passing, and Ken demands that I put a link to it in the show notes. 25:21 - We get Chris to talk about his love for new Battletech products. Drool is involved. 28:20 - Jerry Corrick of Adventure Retail and the Source gets serious kudos from Ken for his impressive stock of Cthulhiana and Lovecraft books (including The Kalem Klub and The Monster in the Mirror). 32:48 - I talk about playing board games, especially in the Board Room run by the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society. Among them were Zooloretto, Pizza Box Baseball, Lost Valley, and Jenseits von Theben. 37:46 - After a brief digression about the glories of the North Market, Fred talks about playing a few after-hours RPGs with Jared Sorensen, and we talk about what makes Origins a great experience (as Ken and I discussed last year). 42:14 - Chris and I got to shoot things in TerrorWerks. Ken manages to relate this to the Scandinavian gaming scene and how our hobby is able to adapt and sell a highly-individualized experience. (This is why we invite him on the show.) Fred brings in the Ashcan Front as an example. Eventually this comes around to a discussion of the Origins seminar track. 52:48 - Before we go, Chris gives a shout out to the city of Columbus, and we all agree. 57:28 - This show is part of the Gaming Broadcast Network. 57:34 - I have a few final thoughts on Origins before talking about two projects I've worked on recently, Finis and The Story Games Names Project. --Paul Discuss this episode in the HG,WT forum.
GenCon SoCal 2006 wrapup 0:32 - I'm back (after a slight delay) from GenCon SoCal in Anaheim.1:09 - This show is a part of the Gaming Podcast Network.1:19 - Couldn't make it to GenCon SoCal? I have a few final remarks about the convention, and you can look forward to hearing more about Full Light, Full Steam and Passages on future shows.21:59 - This show is also part of the Gaming Broadcast Network.22:07 - Sadly, I have no Spirit of the Century review this time, but if you want more of me, check out episode two of The Voice of the Revolution and episode forty-three of Garrett's Games and Geekiness. 23:27 - Help out Robin Laws with the GenCon History Project.24:22 - Help me out by sending me bits to use in the HG,WT promo.25:20 - If you're in the Southern California area, be sure to check out NerdSoCal and the Strategicons.27:21 - Ronin Arts: An undisputed leader in the field of PDF roleplaying supplements.28:08 - And that will do it for today's show. --Paul Discuss this episode in the HG,WT forum
