In education, particularly in early years settings, male educators often face gender stereotypes that impact their professional and emotional wellbeing. These expectations not only shape how male teachers are perceived but also affect their ability to express their authentic selves, nurture students, and create truly inclusive learning environments. This article and podcast episode explore the emotional toll that gender stereotypes impose on male educators and highlights the need for greater representation across early years provision, including elements such as same-sex relationships, neurodiversity, cultural differences, skin colour and the visible inclusion of male role models. What happens in our brains when we die? Where does consciousness come from? And what can out of body experiences teach us about how we create our own realities? In this episode of How We're Wired, join evolutionary anthropologist Dr Anna Machin as she unpicks the neuroscience of death and consciousness, from brain activity during near-death experiences, to the complexities of how we embody ourselves. At one point in the not-too-distant past, live was the only way to experience music, and it remains the most primal, mysterious, and compelling ways to experience music. With the advent of streaming -- millions of recorded songs available at the click of a mouse -- live music retains the mystique of music. It's raw, human, and risky. Things could blow up at any moment. And sometimes they do. But when they don't, or even when they do, it's a special moment. Or at least a memorable one! Aaron and Trent invite their first guest onto the show, drummer Kevin Nelson. Kevin shares his live music experience playing in childhood bands, returning to music as an adult with Aaron's own band Standard Transmission, and the Fort Worth Music and Social Club. Former UCLA linebacker Josh Woods and Orange County Register reporter James H. Williams talk about the big game against No. 15 Washington at the Rose Bowl this week. The Bruins will have a tough test against quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and the Huskies. Penix Jr., who has been referred to as “Big Penix Energy,” leads the country with 1,388 passing yards and Washington ranks fifth in total offense with 530.8 yards per game. The Pac-12 game also serves as an opportunity for UCLA (4-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-12) to avenge last season's loss to then-Fresno State head coach Kalen DeBoer. Woods also explains why the relationship that Penix and DeBoer have serves as an important lesson in never burning a bridge throughout your college career. Laiatu Latu was voted the Pac-12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week after recording three sacks and forcing a fumble against Colorado. Another successful outing could make the difference in stopping Penix from having a good night offensively. Latu transferred from Washington (4-0, 1-0) after sitting out the past two seasons and medically retiring due to a neck injury. Running back Zach Charbonnet was a nominee for the conference's Offensive Player of the Week award after rushing for 104 yards and tying a career-high with three touchdowns on nine carries. It was Charbonnet's ninth career 100-yard game and is now tied for 11th on the UCLA all-time list for 100-yard rushing games with Maurice Jones-Drew, Kevin Nelson and Kermit Johnson. Evolution through Multidimensional awareness - "We are learning by the very fact of coming into a body we are extending our consciousness throughout the entire multidimensional spectrum." - William Buhlman It just takes one OBE to create a major life shift in awareness. Another issue Bill addresses in this interview and in the book, Adventures in the Afterlife, is being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in 2011 and complete and total healing of his illness in the out of body state. Four decades of experience, William Buhlman is an expert on Out of Body Experiences. Reviews on his Youtube channel are outstanding with posts from students who say experiences they've had in his classes are life changing. He says he did a survey with nearly18,000 respondents. Many said they didn't share their OBE experiences with their husband or wife because they thought it would make them sound "strange". Women have reported having OBE pre-birth contact with the being who is coming in to be their child. He's written several books and offers a lot of helpful information on his website to help those who are interested learn how to self-initiate a OBE. Astralinfo.org Video YouTube: Link. City are two thirds through one of the most challenging weeks a team can possibly face with matches away at Chelsea, Paris St. Germain, and Liverpool. It's the turn of the 20th century and revolutionary inventions are sitting on the horizon. In 1901 we have the vacuum cleaner and in 1902 we have air conditioning. In 1903 we have Orville and Wilbur Wright making the first successful manned controlled powered flight. Amongst these great inventors and their wonderful creations lies another. An invention of... fear? Courage? Tourism? Or perhaps just a great story. That story would be about the Van Meter Visitor. A creature that defied explanation at the time and terrorized a number of residents in the small town of Van Meter, Iowa. Don't let this story be overlooked though. Sure, it might not have the most evidence to support it's high strangeness but based off of the research that we here at TFR had conducted, there could be a lot of validity buried deep within the newspaper article that first brought it to life. The creature described could potentially fall into the realm of reality as we know of many other species that inhabit our world that share some of the traits as the Van Meter Visitor, described by locals. It's a short but tantalizing tale that was unearthed by Chad Lewis, Noah Voss, and Kevin Nelson and it has brought forth an incredible story to be told until the end of time, the Van Meter Visitor Festival that is held in late September every year, monster hunters to traverse the town at night in search of a cryptozoological wonder, and much more. We hope you enjoy this episode just as much as we did researching and discussing it. Stay safe and healthy out there, everyone! If you have any stories to tell us, remember we are doing a second "Listener's Tales" episode this Halloween so we need lots of them! You'll hear from us soon! Manchester City's 2021/22 Premier League campaign is underway! Unfortunately, it's off to less than a roaring start but Andrew Dettmer and Kevin Nelson are on the podcast to break down all the intricacies from the match. No dramatic conclusions can be had from a single match at the start of the season but we discuss what to make of the narrowness from both sides, Jack Grealish's league debut, and why Tottenham were so effective countering down City's left side of defense. It's a winding and detailed look into an interesting match so be sure to check it out! The summer transfer window is far from over but with the season quickly approaching, it seemed appropriate to check in on the latest dealings to assess the roster changes so far for all 20 Premier League teams. We'd like to add in the necessary caveat that there is still plenty of time for squads to fill the holes in their rosters so our goal wasn't to jump to any conclusions on the offseason yet (though it may seem that way times). This discussion features Joe Ricci, Kevin Nelson, and Andrew Dettmer going through every team's biggest moves and what else needs to be done to make this a successful window. We are long overdue for an update on the Manchester City women's team so we recruited our old friend Ash to help us go through the end of their season and what roster changes have occurred so far this season. She joined Kevin Nelson to discuss the biggest news yet, the departures of Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle along with the additions of Khadija "Bunny" Shaw and Vicky Losada and what it all means for the team's prospects next season. With the women's tournament at the Tokyo Olympics starting tomorrow as well, we touched on what City players to look for at the competition and gave predictions on how it would all turn out. By all accounts Cyle VanKomen was more than just a good kid. He was the kind of young man that drew others to him. Kind, friendly and generous to a fault, the 24 year-old lived with his older brother and several other young men in what was known as a “party house” in a quiet neighborhood in South Ogden Utah. Neither Cyle, his brother nor anyone else in the house had any known enemies or connection to any criminal activity. He and his roommates lived simply – none of them were wealthy or had much in the way of valuable belonging – least of all Cyle. So it defies belief that on the night of December 9, 2016 – when Cyle's brother and another roommate left the house to buy some snacks to take with them to go bowling – that one of the most bizarre home invasions ever committed took place – leaving Cyle and his neighbor Kevin Nelson dead and a third remaining victim critically wounded. And it all happened in the span of ten minutes – the time it took for Cyle's brother and his friend to walk to the store and back But it all gets weirder and worse. And that's because the other murder victim – next door neighbor Kevin Nelson – who just happened to be the wrong place at the wrong time – had security cameras installed on the side of his house. And those cameras caught and recorded – for more than an hour before the assault – three masked, armed men surrounding the perimeter of the VanKomen house…peering in windows…jumping fences…running what looked like paramilitary drills. Ski masks cover their faces, but the body images of all three attackers – including one very tall man – are clearly visible in the video footage. So why hasn't this case been solved? With Kevin Nelson's security camera video now available for public viewing, is it really possible that no one can identify even one of the perpetrators of this horrific crime? Listen as Melissa details the known facts of this tragically unsolved case, and wonders aloud why some law enforcement agencies that continually ask the public for help don't actually seem to want it even when it's offered up on a silver platter…
Sergio Aguero may has played his final Premier League minutes in a Manchester City shirt and did so as his vintage self, scoring two goals in the final match of the season against Everton. Jon Ashley, Kevin Nelson, and Andrew Dettmer gather to discuss his final performance briefly and whether it's put him back in contention for a substitution in the Champions League final. A larger appreciation of Aguero is certainly due after the season but the discussion preceding and following his play focuses on the team's performances vs. Brighton and Everton as Pep Guardiola prepares the squad for the biggest game in the club's history this weekend. We analyze Joao Cancelo's red card and if that sending off is the primary thing to pinpoint for the loss at Brighton or if something more sinister is at work before moving on to the wonderful display against Everton that undoubtedly soothed any concerns the prior match could have caused. Finally, we talk about the recent rumors of a Harry Kane transfer to City and how likely that move is to happen. Manchester City have clinched the 2020-21 Premier League title and this episode discusses all the factors and moments that have led to this success. Kevin Nelson, Joe Ricci, and Andrew Dettmer evaluate how this title stacks up against the other two Pep Guardiola has one so far and the previous two under Roberto Mancini and Manual Pellegrini. There is an interesting discussion on how Guardiola has changed the league since coming to Manchester and how he's adjusted to the Premier League's response to his influence. We explore a couple of theories on City's substitution habits and whether Pep is using garbage time to perfect his team instead of going through the motions like teams in the past may have done. Finally, there is a review of the victory vs. Newcastle with specific focus on Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake.We mentioned at the end of the show the Zonal Marking podcast's coverage of City's title winning season on their latest show, so we've posted the link below for any interested in checking that out. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/how-guardiola-made-man-city-champions-again/id1488523269?i=1000521407606Please reach out to us on your social media platform of choosing to let us know what you think of the show and your thoughts on all things Manchester City. This episode was originally released May 27th, 2019.For episode 40, Geoff Moes (@ThallidTosser on Twitter), Nat Moes (@GrandpaBelcher), and Josh Chapple (@joshchapple) are pleased to show off Collector Ouphe, a free preview card from Modern Horizons, provided by Wizards of the Coast!01:25 – Oof17:59 – The Real Collection Was the Friends We Made Along the WayTotal runtime: 25:22 Null Rodney I’m sure most of you are here looking for the free Modern Horizons preview card, so we’ll get right to it. It’s a Null Rod on legs! At long last! This card was at the top of my list from the very beginning of exploratory design, and it went through everything almost unchanged mechanically. In my head I named it “Null Rodney.” Null Rod has long been a staple of Vintage aggro-control decks because it helps prey on artifact-based manabases as Wasteland and Strip Mine take apart dual lands. It slows down explosive starts and combo finishes, allowing the control deck enough time to block paths to victory and win with creatures. That was one of Null Rod’s big weaknesses, in fact; it didn’t apply pressure to the opponent by itself. Without threatening creatures bearing down, opponents could find answers or additional threats and break out of their prison to win. Collector Ouphe has the same crippling potential as Null Rod but brings its own threat. As formats get older and smaller, and artifacts get more powerful, Collector Ouphe has increasing utility. In Modern it shuts down Affinity (the deck, not the ability), Aether Vial, and much of the Tron decks’ ability to fix colors and tutor for lands. In Legacy it starts hitting fast mana (Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, Lotus Petal, and Lion’s Eye Diamond), artifact decks with Grim Monolith, and powerful equipment, like Batterskull and Umezawa’s Jitte. And in Vintage, Workshop Aggro runs Walking Ballista and Arcbound Ravager, in addition to all the decks using Moxes, Black Lotus, Sol Ring, and Mana Crypt as a big chunk of their mana base. Oh, and Time Vault is still an OK card, I think. Anyway, we’re primarily a Vintage podcast, so we’ll go deeper into Vintage applications. Obviously not every deck is interested in this effect, but there are probably a few. Stony Silence is one of the most important cards in Survival decks for buying time against Workshops and Paradoxical Outcome, and Collector Ouphe is a Stony Silence that can be tutored for (or discarded to) Survival of the Fittest. Maybe there’s some risk in making creature removal even better against this creature-heavy strategy, but all kinds of removal were good against this deck that has a key land, a key enchantment, big artifact creatures, lots of other creatures, and a relevant graveyard. Ouphe Survival, borrowed from David Lance Business (38)4 Bazaar of Baghdad4 Survival of the Fittest1 Ancestral Recall1 Time Walk1 Thorn of Amethyst4 Basking Rootwalla4 Vengevine4 Hollow One3 Collector Ouphe3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben1 Hooting Mandrills1 Manglehorn1 Spell Queller1 Squee, Goblin Nabob1 Wonder4 Noble HierarchMana Sources (22)2 Elvish Spirit Guide1 Black Lotus1 Mox Emerald1 Mox Jet1 Mox Pearl1 Mox Ruby1 Mox Sapphire2 Verdant Catacombs2 Windswept Heath2 Wooded Foothills2 Misty Rainforest3 Savannah2 Tropical Island1 Forest | Sideboard (15)1 Chalice of the Void4 Containment Priest1 Energy Flux1 Fairgrounds Warden1 Force of Vigor2 Grafdigger’s Cage1 Kataki, War’s Wage1 Collector Ouphe2 Squee, Goblin Nabob1 Stony Silence BUG Control (which we’ve never talked about on this show before) is already looking to deny resources to the opponent with creatures like Leovold, Emissary of Trest, stopping card-draw, and Ramunap Excavator and Wasteland hitting important lands. Like Excavator, the Ouphe is another artifact that’s been given a body and a purpose – preventing the opponent from having nice things. And thanks to Deathrite Shaman, BUG Control can skip running a lot of the artifacts that would make the Ouphe a double-edged sword. In Magic, red and green both hate Vintage staples blue and artifacts, so this deck focuses on those in an aggro-control shell. Christmas Beats foregoes playing most artifacts in favor of Elvish and Simian Spirit Guides, so it can disrupt mana with four Collector Ouphes and an additional Null Rod for moral support. There are lots of creature options beyond that: Magus of the Moon, Tin Street Hooligan, Scavenging Ooze, Tarmogoyf, Harsh Mentor, Vexing Shusher, Goblin Cratermaker. And for spells you get Pyroblast, Lightning Bolt, Ancient Grudge, the new Force of Vigor from Modern Horizons – whatever you think will make a difference in the expected metagame. Artifacts continue getting stronger and allowing opponents to carry out nefarious, broken schemes. Ouphe says no! How Many Team Serious Members Does It Take? Because podcasts are a tricky way to reveal a free Wizards preview card, we decided we’d try something different, and perhaps unique. The Serious Vintage podcast looks at the Vintage format through the lens of community, rather than competition. We have fun playing Magic, but it’s also an excuse to hang out with people we enjoy. And it’s one of the reasons we always end our shows with discussions of food and drink, because the post-tournament meal is just as important as the event itself. Sometimes more so. So thanks to everyone who helped us preview our card (in order of the word they read): Steve McGrew, Jake Hilty, Jon Hammack, JR Goldman, Guhstin Dewey, Paul Blakeley, Ryan Seeley, Nam Q. Tran, Duane Haddix, Rajah James, Anthony “Twaun” Michaels, Jimmy McCarthy, Andy “Brass Man” Probasco, Sam Krohlow, Frank Singel, Josh McCurley, Phil Thorson, Jerry Yang, Eric Caffrey, Mark Trogdon, Gilberto Rivera, Kevin Nelson, Justin Waller, Rick Gideon, David Lance, Kyle Lennox, Charles Rolko, Kevin Poenisch, Matt Hazard, Erik Butler, Joe Dyer, and Ben Perry. Lots of people had fun with it, none more than Brass Man, who provided the stinger for this episode. Thanks also to Geoff Moes, who, when I said I wanted to have him splice 40 or so contextless words of a card together into a coherent whole, didn’t blink an eye. It was just that normal twitch thing he gets when I tell him I have an idea. And thanks to Josh Chapple, who, since it was snowing in Colorado when we recorded, went up the road to podcast from the parking lot of his local bar, Snowpack Taproom, to get a working internet signal. He recommends Snowpack as having a strong selection of rotating local kegs, good food, and powerful internet. The next Team Serious Invitational he hosts in Colorado will definitely take a trip there. Finally, thanks to Jaco for hosting our show at Eternal Central. He loves formats with old Magic cards and has put together quite a home for them. We exist in large part because of his help. My job is easy; I just write words. Upcoming Events We close this episode with a couple of upcoming Vintage events, a section that we used to do and would like to do more regularly. If you have a Vintage (or Middle School or Old School) event that you want us to hype, let us know! If it’s reasonable to put on our next episode, we will. First up, an event I found on The Mana Drain. The Lone Star Lhurgoyfs group is hosting a Vintage event Saturday, June 8 in Houston, Texas. They have a nice writeup, it’s at a bar, and they’re going to raffle off some pretty awesome looking Eldrazi proxies. Check that out if you’re near Houston. In Warren, Ohio, there are two Vintage Eternal Weekend Trials, on Friday, June 14 and Sunday, June 16 at Bottom Dollar Trading. Those events should just be crawling with Team Serious members, so it should be a lot of fun. And Josh is looking forward to the TinFinVitational events in Denver, being run the same weekend as that city’s Magic Fest at the Whittier Pub. There’s a Vintage event on Friday, July 19, and a Legacy event on Sunday, July 21. Take a look if you’ll be playing in GP Denver, and say hey to Josh. Questions for Discussion So! What do you think of Collector Ouphe? Did you know how to pronounce “ouphe” before we did? Did you see Filip Burburan’s great art? The Ouphe is stealing the power from an Aether Vial! Are there other Easter eggs in the art? What other Modern Horizons cards are you excited about? Do you have a local Vintage or other event coming up that you want us to give a shoutout to? Let us know! Conclusion Thanks for listening! If you found this show because of our free Wizards preview card for Modern Horizons, welcome. We hope you enjoyed your time here. We’ll look forward to any questions or comments here or The Mana Drain or on Twitter. You can also email us at seriousvintagepodcast@gmail.com.
