A capital gains tax is a no-brainer, according to a former Labour Party leader. The topic is understood to be on the agenda at the party's conference in Christchurch this weekend, with members deciding whether to continue work on the proposal. David Cunliffe told Mike Hosking he believes most in the party would be keen on the tax. When it comes to voters, he says that capital gains taxes have actually polled really well in the last couple of elections, and one could say that its polled better than the Labour Party. Cunliffe says that it's unlikely to be a net vote loser. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hipkins says Ardern could help New Zealand's image on the world stage in things like trade and tourism. He says she's a uniting force. "Actually, I know a lot of National Party people who didn't vote Labour, wouldn't vote Labour - but they still respect Jacinda. As South Africa marks 30 years of Democracy, SABC News is gearing up to launch a programme dedicated to marking this important milestone. In the build-up to the launch of SABC News' Democracy 30 project on 26 April 2024, Update@Noon zooms in on the Reservation of Separate Amenities Act, which came into effect in 1953. The act was one of the pieces of segregationist legislation enacted by the Apartheid regime to divide South Africans, while also reserving the greatest share of public services for white South Africans. The statute was in effect until 1990, when it was eventually repealed. Opposition to this act was widespread and ongoing, but none was more prominent than Allan Hendrickse, the Labour Party leader, swimming on a whites only the beach in 1987. He disobeyed the law by taking to the water on Kings Beach in Port Elizabeth while serving in PW Botha's cabinet. Botha made him apologize for the stunt, but the message was conveyed, and the world watched. SABC News reporter, Ntombozukho Balintulo filed this report.

Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins has called for a better way to balance our tax system. Delivering his State of the Nation speech earlier today, Mr Hipkins says now is the time to have the tax debate, despite Labour ruling out both a wealth tax and a capital gains tax last year. He pledged to spend the next two years releasing discussion documents, to get them best prepared for the next election. Mr Hipkins says it's something that needs to be taken more seriously, especially when the IMF speaks out. "The reality is, salary and wage earners are shouldering a disproportionate share of the tax take, and we should be making sure that it's more evenly balanced."
