Could young activists hold the key to a more liberated world? Join us on Consciously Clueless as we chat with Cami and Onyx from the Raven Corps, a nonprofit that's redefining activism by integrating veganism with social and environmental justice. From their beginnings as a high school animal rights club, they've grown into a force that tackles systemic issues like capitalism, consumption, and commodification. Discover the unique insights young minds bring to these complex problems, and how their fresh perspectives are challenging societal norms and inspiring change. Cami and Onyx open up about their personal journeys toward veganism, exploring how privilege and societal expectations can shape our choices. They discuss the importance of building inclusive spaces that empower youth activists and recognize the intersections of their identities. Through powerful campaigns like "Operation Mind Over Milk" and "Operation 13," the Raven Corps is not only advocating for plant-based milk in schools but also shining a light on the exploitative practices in the animal agriculture industry. These initiatives are a testament to the power of community-driven activism that seeks both immediate and long-term solutions. As we wrap up, we tackle the often-unspoken challenges of activism: burnout and mental health. Our guests candidly share their struggles and the coping strategies that have helped them maintain balance. Whether it's overcoming addiction or finding solace in animal sanctuaries, they highlight the crucial role of community support in sustaining their commitment to activism. If you're keen to understand the dynamic world of youth activism or are searching for inspiration to drive change in your community, this episode promises valuable insights and encouragement. Guest Bios: Cami (they/them) is the former Youth Director and Campaign Coordinator at The Raven Corps. They've been involved with the organization since 2018 and are a passionate advocate for total liberation. Onyx Helper is a youth collective liberation activist and Conspirator at The Raven Corps. They focus a lot on animal liberation campaigns as well as various other liberation struggles, such as the fight for Palestinian liberation. Water is essential to life, yet factory animal farms have polluted freshwater and river and wetland ecosystems and rural neighborhoods for decades. But we can work to protect water, wildlife, animals, and community health. To tell us how, is our guest Larry Baldwin. He's with the nonprofit group Waterkeeper Alliance https://waterkeeper.org/ and serves as their Campaign Coordinator for the “Pure Farms, Pure Waters” program in North Carolina. He works with the 15 licensed Waterkeeper Alliance groups in North Carolina in their efforts to reform the current polluting practices of the industrial meat producing facilities, known as Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, or CAFOs. In this 36-minute interview, "In Tune to Nature" radio host Carrie Freeman asks Larry Baldwin about what these mass hog facilities and mass chicken warehouses look and smell like (horrible for the animals), how the growers/farmers are in debt while agribusiness corporate executives profit, what water and air pollution these animal factories produce, like the open manure pits surrounding pig factory farms -- feces that puts bacteria and sewage into creeks and also gets sprayed into the air, creating environmental injustices in the largely Black rural communities where these factory farms are ruining quality of life. Larry was featured in a documentary on fighting this injustice, called The Smell of Money, streaming now. Larry discusses programs and policies that can protect communities and water ecosystems from CAFO pollution, and helps us know how we can help move past factory animal farming. In Tune to Nature is a weekly show airing on Wednesdays from 6:30-7pm EST on Atlanta indie station WRFG (Radio Free Georgia) 89.3FM hosted by Carrie Freeman or Melody Paris. Please consider donating to support this 50plus-year old independent, progressive, noncommercial Atlanta radio station at www.wrfg.org Take care of yourself and others, including other species, like those who rely on healthy river ecosystems. This week we hear about two campaigns at the forefront of opposition to the military expansion on this continent. ‘Native Title Rockets' Campaign Coordinator and documentary Director Rocky speaks with Priya Kunjan (Thursday Breakfast) about Southern Launch's Koonibba rocket testing range that has begun commercial operation with its first rocket launch this week on Kokatha lands near Ceduna, South Australia. Kokatha elder Aunty Sue Haseldine brings us a call out for supporters to protect country from damage by the rocket testing operations. Then we hear an interview from Phuong Tran (Tuesday Breakfast) with Larrakia, Kungarakan, Gurindji and French political creative Laniyuk about the sacred lands of the Larrakia people, which are currently under threat of being destroyed by Defence Housing Australia. Binybara 'Lee Point' near Darwin is an area of deep cultural significance to the Larrakia Peoples and is also an internationally-significant site for migratory shorebirds and home to the rare and endangered Gouldian Finch. Larrakia people are being supported by community groups to have Lee Point protected and returned to traditional custodianship, after the Federal government gave Defence Housing Australia permission to develop the site 800 homes in 2018. Last week Environmental Justice Australia made an application to the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority (AAPA) to recognise sacred sites in the Lee Point development zone, including the Danggalaba Dreaming track, a sacred waterway and traditional camping places and ceremonial grounds on behalf of Larrakia Danggalaba Traditional Owner Tibby Quall.Support the campaign by signing the petition to Return Lee Point to the Care of Larrakia People.

Welcome back to Hell Has an Exit. In episode 96, Bryan visited Tony Apanovitch on Death Row for an exclusive interview. Today's mini-episode provides an update on Tony's wrongful conviction. Tony is currently on death row for a crime he did not commit, and in this episode, you'll hear a letter from Tony himself, as well as an interview with Peter Kobak on what's happening with the case and how listeners can help Tony find justice. First, we'll hear from Tony. In his letter, he expresses his gratitude to everyone who has supported him throughout his journey to finding justice. He acknowledges how difficult it has been to be back on death row, but remains hopeful that justice will eventually be served. Tony asks listeners to continue spreading the word about his case and fighting for his freedom. Next, we have an interview with Peter Kobak, Campaign Coordinator for Ohioans to Stop Executions, who has been working on Tony's case. Peter provides an update on the legal proceedings and discusses some of the challenges they face in securing Tony's release. One of the challenges is that the Ohio Parole Board has not scheduled Tony's case for a hearing. Peter urges listeners to write to the Board, and maybe the governor, urging that a hearing be scheduled. As always, thank you for tuning in to Hell Has an Exit. Please share this episode and Tony's story with your friends and family. Together, we can make a difference and bring justice to those who have been wrongfully convicted. ✍

Today we talk with Liz Blum, Campaign Coordinator (and co-founder) of Decarcerate Sacramento, a coalition dedicated to lowering the number of people incarcerated in the Sacramento region through public health tactics. Central to today's discussion is a push to increase public support for a new, successful Public Defender's Pretrial Support Program over the current punitive Probation program, which has a markedly less successful recidivism rate (by a factor of six) below what public health advocates and experts are presently recommending to the council. We also discuss the two pushes over the last three years from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department to increase the corrections infrastructure. Twice, Decarcerate Sacramento has beaten them, but they are vigilant of a third effort. Finally, we touch on a Wednesday morning demonstration by Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) to encourage Governor Gavin Newsom to continue decarcerating the state of California. Will he keep doing what is right? This interview was recorded in late autumn 2019 - before the general election, before the UK formally left the EU and when no one in the world had plans for a era-defining global pandemic. However, the ideas and theories discussed resonate more than ever, with a bigger urgency about the way society learns, makes decisions, collaborates and adapts. In this episode, we're focusing on democracy, social policy and community decision-making. Our very special guest is a sociologist, public intellectual, broadcaster and political adviser - Matthew Taylor CBE. Matthew first rose to prominence as one of the architects of Tony Blair's historical election victory in 1997, as Campaign Coordinator and Director of Policy. Following a five year stint as Director of the Institute of Public Policy Research, Matthew returned to Downing Street as the head of Blair's Policy Unit and author of the successful 2005 Labour Party manifesto. For the past 14 years, Matthew has been Chief Executive at The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, - an apolitical think tank with a global fellowship of nearly 30,000 social reformers, educators and cultural activists. Matthew is a regular broadcaster, including The Moral Maze on BBC radio 4, Agree To Differ and The Fix. And, in 2017 he wrote the Good Work report for Theresa May's government on the future of employment conditions in the UK. Richard met Matthew in his London office to ask him about whether society does really learn in a time of crisis and whether democracy and civic participation is the answer --- Useful links: Matthew on Wikipedia / https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Taylor_(political_strategist) Matthew's blog / https://www.thersa.org/discover/publications-and-articles/matthew-taylor-blog The RSA / https://www.thersa.org/ Good work: the Taylor review of modern working practices / https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/good-work-the-taylor-review-of-modern-working-practices Matthew's lecture on 'An Age Of Insecurity' / https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-AlFZnJHC8 'Leadership After Covid-19' / https://medium.com/bridges-to-the-future/leadership-after-covid-19-12746d8fa2f5 The RSA: 'Bridges To The Future' podcast on change after corona / https://www.thersa.org/coronavirus/podcast --- We'll be debating the issues raised at www.thepossibilityclub.org, a free network of professionals with something to say and ideas to test - and we really want to know what you think. Robin Vitulle, Co-Founder, Vice President and on the Board of Directors of FREE ALL CAPTIVE ELEPHANTS (FACE) since the nonprofit's inception in 2017. Robin began her advocacy for elephants in 2013 while learning of the elephant poaching crisis in Africa. As an animal lover all of her life, this new journey brought her to become aware of the suffering of elephants held in captivity in circuses and zoos right here in the USA and decided this is where she could do more to advocate to make a positive change.Robin was instrumental in the passing of Nosey's Law in New Jersey. She gave testimony before the NJ Senate and Assembly Committees while working alongside retired NJ Senator Raymond J. Lesniak. Nosey's Law made NJ the first state in the U.S. to ban the use of wild and exotic animals in traveling animal acts. She has also organized many peaceful circus protests, both in New Jersey and for other advocates where circuses are held. Most notable was the protesting and tracking of Nosey the elephant where the end result was Nosey's rescue and placement into a beautiful sanctuary where she is thriving and learning to be the elephant she was always meant to be. For something which is meant to be “insta-ntaneous”... Social Media can feel anything but that. I’ve seen this struggle faced by so many Salon Owners, that I've decided it’s time to offer up some hard & fast solutions once and for all, so you never have to feel stuck again, and so that Social Media can stop taking over more of your life than it needs to… The answer is actually pretty simple… 1 word, in fact! The idea is all about making less work for you, whilst still allowing you to produce a continuous stream of great Salon-marketing content for your current, and potential clients online. This means less time spent sitting at your laptop or phone and more time spent on other important things, like managing your team or making more sales. Today, I'm joined by Braeley Davies. Braeley is actually my Campaign Coordinator at SalonBot and Social Media & Marketing Manager here at the Salon Owners Collective! Braeley will share with you the secret 1 word that, done right, will cut your time spent on social media in half. I mean, after all, you probably didn’t get into this industry to become a marketer, so time spent doing something that you aren’t in love with can often feel like time wasted... Really, we both know that it isn’t time wasted, but why spend way longer on it than you need to? Welcome to the Audible Café Podcast! Today, my guest is Mike Mease, Campaign Coordinator and Co-Founder of the Buffalo Field Campaign. The Buffalo Field Campaign is the only group working both in the field and in policy arenas to stop the harassment and slaughter of America’s last truly wild, genetically pure buffalo in America. These buffalo are the direct descendants of the 30 to 60 million buffalo that used to roam continental North America, and their herd currently contains less than 4,000 members. The primary goal of the Buffalo Field Campaign is to create permanent year-round protection for bison and the ecosystem they depend on—including respect for the migratory needs of this long-exploited and clearly endangered species. Mike has been devoted to the cause of the wild buffalo for over 22 years. The fact that President Obama signed into law the National Bison Legacy Act, which designates the bison as the official mammal of the United States, has done nothing to protect the buffalo! The Act includes a disclaimer that the designation does not change the current management plan that is actually devastating the herd through bad management and what Mike and others aptly call “boxed hunts”. Buffalo Field Campaign staff and volunteers are in the process of shepherding through the federal court a case for listing the wild buffalo as an endangered species that would give these wonderful animals the protections they need to thrive - that is, so long as the Endangered Species Act thrives - which is another battle we all must join in. Securing Endangered Species Act status is a long haul and the Buffalo Field Campaign team needs your help! They are halfway through an 8-year process for designating this mammal as an endangered species, and what should be a straightforward and swift action is nothing of the kind. With the herd down to less than 4,000 members, this is an urgent call to action. So after you listen to this great interview with Mike Mease of the Buffalo Field Campaign, please visit their website at buffalofieldcampaign, org and please take note of their matching campaign before it ends on November 30th. They are a transparent and hard-working non-profit, and they are one of a kind in the nation - the only ones doing this work on behalf of the herd. So also visit their “Get Involved” page to take action on behalf of the last wild herd of buffalo so dearly in need of our protection. The “About Buffalo” section of the website is truly awesome and full of inspiring information about buffalo. The whole website is great. Thanks again to Mike Mease of Buffalo Field Campaign for taking the time to share his passion for the buffalo and his important work on their behalf. How much coal mining is enough coal mining? Well, in Australia, it seems there’s never enough. And there’s even an innovative technique being hyped to help convince the state government of New South Wales to let a new mine get started - in the Southern Highlands, right inside the water catchment area used by Sydney. Campaign Coordinator for the Lock the Gate Alliance in the Southern Highlands Charmaine Roth explains what’s been going on.Australia's environmental and climate movement is under attack again. What's at stake is ENGO ‘deductible gift recipient’ (DGR) status - that's the tax deduction that you get for donating to Friends of the Earth and other non-profit environment organizations. Cam Walker, campaigns co-ordinator for Friends of the Earth in Melbourne, elaborates the political context.

Kansas City is home to an existing and a new replacement nuclear weapons parts plant that have been and will be responsible for 85% of the components of US nuclear weapons. The new plant is owned by the Kansas City Planned Industrial Expansion Authority (PIEA), described in a 2010 Missouri Court of Appeals decision as "a statutory agency that was created by a vote of the City Council of Kansas City, Missouri (“the City”) under section 100.320.1," and whose members are appointed by the Kansas City mayor. The plant will be operated by Honeywell for the National Nuclear Security Administration in a complicated leasing scheme, involving the General Services Administration and private developer Centerpoint Properties, that was criticized by the GAO in a 2009 report Rachel MacNair is the Campaign Coordinator for KC Peace Planters, a group responsible for getting a measure on the ballot on April 2, 2013 in Kansas City, Missouri, that would preclude the city from engaging in any such nuclear weapons involvement in the future. Willie Jackson worked in the old Kansas City nuclear weapons parts plant in the 1970's, 80's and 90's, where he was exposed to hundreds of identified toxic substances. He filed claims for health problems, and they have been denied. Rachel MacNair and Willie Jackson spoke on the January 29, 2013 edition of Tell Somebody. 'Kwehsay' Miku Chaiboosomjid works from Bangkok as the Information and Campaign Coordinator with the Burma Issues/Peace Way Foundation. Burma Issues is a non-profit organisation, made up of young ethnic people from Eastern Burma who now dedicate their lives to educating and empowering the grassroots communities in Eastern Burma, documenting human rights abuses and acting as a bridge between the grassroots communities and the international community. The organization has 3 main projects.• Grassroots empowerment: educating and empowering communities in Burma's civil war zones. Providing education to both adults and children in concepts of civil participation, leadership, critical thinking, and cultural pride • Information for action: documenting the human rights abuses through interviews, videos and photography • Campaigns for peace: raising awareness amongst the international community about the situation Initially through partnership with CUSO-VSO and VSO International, Burma Issues had access to learn skills on documenting human rights violation with video documentation and advocacy in the middle of year 2003. Later on VSO International enabled us to work with and cooperate with more ethnic human rights organization for human rights activities and to cooperate in the field of youth and women and youth empowerment and capacity building. A brief biography of Kwehsay in his own words:My name is Kwehsay and I was born in Karen State Burma. My village was destroyed by the Burmese Army in 1976. We had to live in the jungle. My father was killed by the Burmese Army three months before my mother gave birth to my youngest sister. I had no friends to play with and no school to go to and no health care when we got sick. I had no food some times and have to go the jungle to find edible food for our survival. My mother planned many times to kill herself and to kill us as she did not want to see her children starve to death and she did not want to see us alive after she died from starvation. As you are not in this kind of situation it will be difficult for you to relate.I came to the Thai Burma border in 1983 to stay with my uncle for my education. Again the Burma Army attack and occupied the place and I have to move to Thailand and live in the refugee camp in April 1984. I live in the refugee camp for ten year. No freedom.I went back to my village area several times between 1990 and 1993 to visit my mother and I have seen that thing have not changed to the better situation. In 1994 I started working with Burma Issues as I believe in its ideology and concept in finding the solution of the conflict in Burma in a peaceful and non-violent way. I started working as the Human Rights information collector in my own village area and provide basic human rights training to the local villagers. When I work as the human rights information collector I did take photos and document my own house which has been burned down by the Burmese Army.…We believe in justice and peace and we hope you all stand with us.We are calling for the respect of human rightsWe do stand for justiceStand with us. More information about Kwehsay's organization is available at www.burmaissues.org Volunteer for a better world!
