Mark asks Mark Lewman after thirty-three years in the design and advertising industry how does he feel about the future of his profession and what can we all learn from his veteran insight.
“What’s changed most about Tor is the drug markets have taken over… We had all these hopeful things in the beginning but ever since Silk Road has proven you can do it, the criminal use of Tor has become overwhelming. I think 95% of what we see on the onion sites and other dark net sites is just criminal activity. It varies in severity from copyright piracy to drug markets to horrendous trafficking of humans and exploitation of women and children.” -- Andrew Lewman; cyberscoop, 22 May, 2017 Do you know what the Darknet is? No seriously… do you ACTUALLY understand what the Darknet is? On this episode of InSecurity, Matt Stephenson and Michelle Moskowitz speak with Dark Owl Exec VP Andrew Lewman about The Darknet. As the former CEO of The Tor Project, he knows a thing or two about what happens in the Upside Down of the internet. From the Multiverse of Darknets to why business needs to be concerned with activity on the Darknet to the work Andrew is doing with law enforcement, it’s a wide-open look at an area not everyone understands. About Andrew Lewman Andrew Lewman (@andrewlewman) is the Executive Vice President at Dark Owl. He has more than 30 years of global-scale technology experience in a variety of domains, including information security, systems administration, and data management. His interest lies in the intersection of technology and humans. Andrew advises the US and its Allies, having worked on SAFER Warfighter, MEMEX, SHARKSEER, CRISP, and others. And as a technology advisor to Interpol’s Crimes Against Children Initiative. Andrew is a keynote speaker and frequent media contact for conferences, invited speeches and the global press. He is publishing with Elsevier Digital Investigations, EMCDDA, and Fordham University Press. In today’s conversation Dani gets to know Carrie Lewman, an everyday woman with a huge story. Carrie’s experiences in navigating the loss + grief of her father along with the grief of the life she thought she was going to live has deeply informed the work she now is doing in the world today. She shares candidly about the not so healthy ways she was trying to cope with the sadness of not only losing her father but the abandonment she experienced from her mother who left when she was only 11 years old. She talks about the importance of feeling ALL of your feelings regardless of how scary they are. She talks about how she so clearly was living her life almost in this kind of autopilot way of living from her own traumatic childhood experiences, like we all do until we gain greater awareness. She also touched on all of the different ways in which we grieve and how grief isn’t strictly linked to losing someone who dies but we can grieve over all sorts of things and people and experiences. This episode is perfect for the person waist deep in their own grieving process or for the person looking to make any huge transition in life + gain greater support + understanding. •••••••••••••••••••••••• They also discussed: early childhood abandonment the painful loss of her father to Cancer being the youngest sibling young marriage how Carrie’s Hashimoto’s diagnosis was the catalyst for deep inner reflection + emotional healing various stages of grief how nobody grieves the same ways to reclaim your power and find greater healing both healthy + unhealthy ways of coping through grief how all of Carrie’s adversity has lead to a more authentic life path and so much more! Full episodes info and Show Notes - www.wearelookingsideways.com It's the first episode of my special Portland omnibus - and I kicked things off with this conversation with the great Mark Lewman, recorded at Nemo HQ in Portland. Lewman has had one of those circuitous, intensely creative career path that action sports culture often throws up. We’re dealing with creative royalty, a man who’s resume includes stints steering era-defining titles such as Freestylin’, Homeboy, Sassy, Dirt, Grand Royal and Big Brother. Along the way he worked on Jackass, collaborated with his friend Spike Jonze and ghostwrote Mat Hoffman’s autobiography. He then switched codes, went brand-side and works today as one of the honchos at Nemo Design, delivering ground-breaking campaigns for some of the biggest companies in action sports. As you might expect from that CV, Lewman has a wealth of anecdotes and experience, and I had a blast during this conversation. As ever with these episodes, this is the story of how somebody carved out a unique career in the industry, and had a riot doing it. Right up my strasse, then. My thanks to Lewman and everyone at Nemo for being such great sports for this one, and to Travel Portland, Kex Portland, Hertz and Black Diamond PR for their help in pulling this one together. Thanks to Matt Ward for the theme tune, and to my editor Fina Charleson.

Lectures can be very effective...so what do you think about that. At least some can...well at least one or two a year under the right circumstances, or maybe everyday if given by the right person and during the right time and...well...I know that some of my best classes, most memorable classes and teachers, most life changing classes have been lectures. So you can't tell me that lectures don't work. Some do. Why? This podcast was inspired by Ginger Lewen's podcast http://gingerl.podomatic.com/ It has been on my mind for a couple of decades and just when I thought I ended the rambling podcasts, here comes another! Peace everyone! Music by Runaway Hudson...check em' out!
