Award-winning actor Dame Harriet Walter is back on stage at the National Theatre in Federico Lorca's newly-adapted The House of Bernada Alba. After a break of seven years playing assorted television roles including ‘difficult' mothers in Succession and Ted Lasso, she's back treading the boards and once again playing a formidable matriarch. She joins Clare McDonnell in the studio to talk about her career so far, as well as her newest role. As of today, police in Northern Ireland can now charge people with upskirting, downblousing and cyber-flashing. At the same time, British Transport Police are encouraging women to lower their tolerance for sexual harassment during their commute and report minor offenders more often. So is recognition of so-called 'minor' sexual offences improving? Clare speaks to Naomi Long, Leader of the Alliance Party and former Northern Ireland Justice Minister, and to women's rights activist Zan Moon. What do women look for in a bra after breast cancer surgery? Clare is joined by Katy Marks, an architect by trade, who discovered after her single mastectomy that there was no bra on the market that was flat on one side. She didn't want to use a prosthetic and so designed her own, called Uno, which launches today. She'll be joined on the programme by Asmaa Al-allak who won this year's Great British Sewing Bee and is a consultant breast surgeon who has made post-surgery lingerie for her patients. Runner Eilish McColgan follows in the footsteps of her mother Liz McColgan in the pursuit of sporting greatness. Now she's made a documentary telling their story, looking at their relationship and charting the times Eilish has broken her mother's records – all except the marathon. Eilish joins Clare to talk about making the documentary, as well as the pressures and benefits of following in the family business.

Eilish McColgan is one of the best distance runners in the world. The 32-year-old is a 3-time Olympian, a European and Commonwealth Games champion, and holds numerous British records. Last weekend, she added another record to that list, running the 10,000m in 30:00.86 as she prepares for her marathon debut in London next month. But despite her impressive athletic resume, Eilish frequently finds herself fending off social media trolls who are more focused on her appearance than her results. Coached by her mom, Olympic medalist Liz McColgan, Eilish knows the impact of strong female role models. In honour of International Women's Day, this week we chat about Eilish's phenomenal career, and how she's using it to create a better future for girls in sport.Learn more about Eilish McColgan's not-for-profit Giving Back to TrackLearn more about The Shakeout Podcast and Canadian Running Magazine on our website https://runningmagazine.ca/category/shakeout-podcast/Follow The Shakeout Podcast on Twitter https://twitter.com/ShakeoutPodcastInstagram https://www.instagram.com/shakeoutpodcast/ andFacebook https://www.facebook.com/theshakeoutpodcast/Subscribe to our weekly show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-shakeout-podcast/id1224828899243

Series 2 kicks off with Olympian and former world champion athlete, Liz McColgan. Liz had a glittering career in athletics on both the track, in the 10,000m and the road, in the marathon. On top of world titles, she's also a double olympian, double commonwealth champion and multiple marathon winner. In fact her story around her debut marathon, coming straight off a track season with no Marathon training to go out and win the New York marathon is a must listen coming up. From her early days growing up and the hurdles she overcame to succeed, to her coaching herself in her crowning achievements and training in a sauna in Scotland is all on its way! We also talk drug use in sport and the grey areas around technology creeping in as well. She is now a coach to others, including her daughter Eilish, a world class athlete too and on her way to the Tokyo Olympics as we speak. It's a great listen and we start with her own origin story and those first experiences of competitive running. Joe Molloy is joined by 1988 Olympic medalist Liz McColgan to look back at her lengthy career on the track.
DAVID BAIKIE is a man steeped in lower league football in Scotland. There's not a lot he hasn't seen as a player, manager and now a chairman. His most successful stay was at Tayport, where across 13 years he amassed nearly 30 trophies including two Scottish Junior Cups. We'll hear the part former top athlete Liz McColgan played in helping Baikie create a positive mental attitude at the club. He retired from management in 2015 but couldn't stay away from Canniepairt and for the past four years he's been heading up things in the boardroom. We'll hear how he's finding life out of the dugout – and look back at his career in it. With more teams voting to join the East of Scotland league this year, Tayport are now the only Fife team left in junior football. But not for long according to David. He'll tell us how and why he sees them heading to the East next term too. Perhaps that's no surprise, though, after David helped draw up a pyramid structure for the juniors 30 years ago - only to be reprimanded for doing so. Plus David explains why car boot sales were so crucial to the club during the covid crisis. We have also have our first sponsor for the show. What is it like growing up as the daughter of one of the greatest distance runners of all-time? Surprisingly normal actually. In this episode, Eilish McColgan, the daughter of episode 60 guest Liz McColgan, joins Chris and Kara to talk about her own running journey from childhood club star to 2-time Olympian. Not pressured into it by her distance-running parents, she fell in love with the sport all on her own, making her journey uniquely beautiful. Eilish details her up and down journey where she endured a performance plateau in high school before breakout performances in her early 20s led to a 2012 Olympic berth in the steeplechase and eventually to the 2016 Olympics in the 5K. It wasn't easy, however, as multiple injuries and surgeries almost derailed each of those opportunities on the world stage. Eilish shares so much wisdom in this episode including navigating her changing body as a teenager, learning how to individualize her training for optimal results, and maintaining her passion and commitment to the sport through major injury. Of course, she also provides her perspective on what should be done to level the playing field and ensure all countries uphold similar standards for clean sport. Throughout the conversation, Eilish's love for running shines brightly through, and we can't wait to root for her in Tokyo next year! A quick programming note: we will be on hiatus for the month of December to enjoy time with our families for the holidays and will be back to you with new episodes in January.
In this episode we speak to middle-distance runner and double Olympian Eilish McColgan and her mother, coach and former athlete (and Olympic silver medalist) Liz McColgan. We chat about Liz's role in coaching her oldest daughter Eilish, how they manage their long-distance relationship as mum and daughter and coach and athlete and how Liz got into the male-dominated world of sports coaching. Liz talks about how she feels around the lack of females in coaching roles and how women could be provided with more support and mentorship to try and address the problem and help women attain roles higher up in the sport of athletics. We also get an insight into Eilish's training over the past 12 months and around the problems she has experienced with her menstrual cycle. Liz explains how she tracks Eilish's cycle and symptoms and details how they adapt training around this, with Liz encouraging other coaches to be open about the topic and to do the same. This is a great episode for anyone interested in coaching or anyone who wants to open up communication with their athletes around their menstrual cycle .Resources:Eilish McColgan on Instagram: @eilishmccolganLiz McColgan on Instagram: @lizmccolganIf you like what we do and you'd like to support our cause please consider becoming a Patron. This week, Jenni is joined by British runner Eilish McColgan. Only a decade ago, Eilish was a student living it up at university: Late nights and a typical student lifestyle are not what you’d expect from one of Team GBs elite runners but Eilish didn’t yet realise that was her true calling. One day she decided to switch things up and only a year later found herself competing at London 2012. In this episode of RunPod, Eilish and Jenni discuss the commitment required to be at the top and what it’s like to follow in her mum, Liz McColgan’s footsteps. Also since Eilish is known for running the 5000m, she has plenty of tips for us to improve our own 5k time. A great insight to life as an elite but ultimately we all have one thing in common, and that is an appreciation for the joy of running.

Liz McColgan is a legend and pioneer in the sport of track and field. She won the first-ever women's 10K at the Commonwealth Games in 1986. She competed in the first-ever Olympic 10,000 meter event for women in Seoul in 1988 (and earned a silver). She became a World Champion in 1991 just 9 months after giving birth to her daughter. She won the first-ever World Half Marathon Championship for women in 1992, and she won 3 World Marathon Majors (before they were called that) with victories in NYC, London, and Tokyo. She was also a pioneer in less fortunate ways as an athlete who lost gold medals to dopers and who lost her sponsorship with Nike due to pregnancy. Both experiences almost ended her career prematurely. Through it all, she remained the same hard-working, fiercely-competitive athlete with integrity who believed in doing things the right way. In this episode with Kara and Chris, Liz holds nothing back as we discuss it all from being bullied growing up in Scotland to competing in those pioneering days for women's athletics and now to coaching kids and elite athletes (including her daughter Eilish and US marathoner Allie Kieffer) in a sport at risk due to doping, shoe technology and the power dynamics within governing bodies. Liz provides great perspective on competing herself in an era dominated by steroids and EPO as well as what she believes should be done to level the playing field and clean up the sport today (hint: lifetime bans for athletes AND coaches plus standardized shoe specs). What you see (and hear) is what you get with Liz McColgan, and we are proud to amplify her voice.

This week on the Endure Stronger podcast, we interview double Olympian and European silver medallist Eilish McColgan. Eilish is a Scottish middle distance runner who represented Team GB at the 2012 and the 2016 Olympic Games and is on track to represent Great Britain again this summer in Tokyo. We talk with Eilish about her goals for 2020, her biggest inspiration, overcoming injuries, and how she deals with pre-race nerves - and how you can too. (Eilish is a good person to take advice from about this. She went from competing at the *relatively* small Scottish University championships straight to the London Olympics at the age of twenty.) Eilish also recounts how early in her career, she overcame an injury so bad that one doctor mistook it for a motorcycle accident and told her she wouldn’t run at an elite level again. We also discuss the troubles females athletes face and the scrutiny in the mainstream media, which lead to a refreshingly honest chat about body shaming. Eilish also tells us about her biggest inspiration - her mum and coach, former world champion Liz McColgan. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting down with Eilish, and there’s some absolutely golden advice in this episode. Eilish doesn’t overcomplicate things. She eats whole food, religiously does her prehab and rehab, and simply aims to run her best every single year. Eilish taught us a a lot, and she has a lot to teach you too. Listen in to this week's episode via the link in our bio. Who could forget the world champs in 1991 where Liz McColgan destroyed the field in Tokyo on a hot and humid night to take gold, one of the greatest 10,000m races of all time. 1991 was an amazing year for Liz giving birth to her daughter Eilish, winning the New York marathon taking 3 min of the world record for fastest marathon debut, and being rewarded bbc sports personality of the year. One of Scotland’s most successful athletes, Liz McColgan also took silver in the 10,000 metres event at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and went on to win Tokyo marathon and after a career threatening injury she bounced back after being side lined for two years to win the prestigious London Marathon This episode has it all focus, determination, career threatening injury and one of the biggest come backs of all time!!!
Liz McColgan, a 1991 10 K marathon World Champion, Olympic silver medalist in 1988, and winner in London, New York, and Tokyo city marathons is our guest for today! She runs Doha Athletic Club, helping kids from all over the world improve their running. We discuss how she started running marathons, her struggle with arthritis, how she battled crippling self-doubt, and her quest to a positive mindset.
Liz McColgan MBE has a distinguished history of success as middle and long-distance track athlete, becoming world champion for 10,000 metres at the 1991 World Champs, silver medallist in the 1988 Olympics and twice gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games. She also had major success on the road winning New York City, Tokyo and London Marathons. In this very special episode of BBR, David and Jody speak to Liz about her unusual route to becoming world champion, including: Why Liz decided to not have a coach and coach herself through her career Why modern athletes disadvantage themselves by narrowing their racing to just track or road How Liz trained to win her gold medals What she thinks about the state of doping in the sport compared with the 80s and 90s Exactly what it's like coaching her daughter Ailish McColgan and the challenges they face in a mother-daughter coaching team Why her son has been reluctant to follow in the (literal) footsteps of the McColgan dynasty Her take on the Caster Semenya situation In this episode, David and Jody also introduce a new sponsor. Before Jessica Ennis-Hill in Beijing, there was Liz McColgan in Tokyo - winning global 10,000m gold less than a year after giving birth to Eilish. In just two years’ time, the McColgans will be back in Japan, and hoping to reach another international podium, for - despite her parents’ best efforts not to push her into the sport - Eilish has followed in her mother’s footsteps, and is now a formidable athlete in her own right. 4:01, 8:31, 14:48: these days, she is rubbing shoulders with Paula, Jo, Yvonne, Laura, and other British distance heavyweights towards the top of the all-time rankings; consistently reaching finals at major championships; and won a brave and brilliant silver over 5,000m in Berlin this summer. The road has not been smooth - there have been barriers both literal (Eilish is the Scottish 3,000 steeplechase record holder) and figurative (for years she battled with significant injuries) - but the last few seasons have been transformative, and it was fascinating to catch up with her at the end of her 2018 campaign. We hope you enjoy the listen. As ever, let us know your thoughts: @Claire_GThomas and @BackstraightB
