It's DIE HARD in D.C! It's a big one this week as we're finally discussing the fourth film in the DIE HARD franchise: LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (aka DIE HARD 4.0)!After a group of elite hackers led by former government cyber-security expert Thomas Gabriel (Timothy Olyphant) initiate a massive cyber-attack on critical US infrastructure, grizzled NYPD detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) is dragged into the fray when he is asked to facilitate the routine transfer of a skilled young hacker named Matt Farrell (Justin Long), whom the villains now want dead. The mismatched due of McClane and Matt are then forced to work together to escape the hired killers who are after them and resolve the wider crisis, but when Gabriel learns of McClane's involvement, he seeks to turn tables by targeting McClane's emotionally estranged daughter Lucy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and using her as a pawn in his masterplan…thus forcing McClane to dig deep in order to save both the country and his daughter. The guys discuss the film's complicated legacy, its tortured development history, and the inherent challenges of making a fourth film in any series. They each give their thoughts about what works, what doesn't and whether or not this robust political action-thriller still feels like a DIE HARD film or not. John McClane 4.0 is also put under the microscope, along with the film's supporting cast, and the work of the director Len Wiseman. As always the show culminates with the Die Hard Oscars and the ever-popular Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz…but stay tuned for a special announcement at the very end of this episode!TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOwS1yzIU4kAt the time of release, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (aka DIE HARD 4.0) is streaming on Tubi and YouTube TV and is available to rent or buy on Apple TV/iTunes, Fandango and all the usual platforms! After the, cough, 'underwhelming' A Good Day To Die Hard in 2013, the assumption was that the Die Hard saga had run aground. But for a while, that wasn't the case, and by 2015, there was a plan hatched for one final movie in the series. Bruce Willis was set to return as John McClane, Len Wiseman - after Die Hard 4.0 - was coming back to direct. And this time, we were going to be told the origin story of John McClane too. The film was active for nearly half a decade. And this is the story of the Die Hard that never was. Plus, a small update too on the Film Stories podcast... Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome back to Not A Bomb! —the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: was it really that bad? We're celebrating five years of cinematic redemption. The “celebration” of 2025's biggest cinematic misfires rolls on, and this week, Troy and Brad pirouette into the bullet-riddled ballet that is Ballerina. Set in the ever-expanding World of John Wick, this spin-off tries desperately to remind you that, yes, the John Wick franchise is still very cool, very successful, and very much alive—even if this particular entry feels like it's limping to the finish line in high heels.Ballerina stars Ana de Armas as Eve, a vengeance-fueled assassin with a tragic backstory and a penchant for pirouettes and pistol-whipping. The film's marketing promised a sleek, stylish detour into Wick's world, but what audiences got was a muddled mix of lore-dumping, recycled set pieces, and storytelling that felt like it was choreographed by committee.Troy and Brad dive deep into the film's long and winding production history, including the last-minute call to bring in franchise godfather Chad Stahelski to punch up the action. Is Ballerina a misunderstood gem or just a misstep in an otherwise bulletproof franchise? Tune in as they dissect the good, the bad, and the ballet of it all—and decide whether Ballerina deserves a second dance or a swift exit stage left. From the world of John Wick: Ballerina is directed by Len Wiseman and stars Ana de Armas, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves. To celebrate the last 25 years of film, the Not A Bomb podcast is compiling a Top 25 list from the Not A Bomb community. I bid you welcome to this year's Apocalypse Video Shocktober Spooktacular. I am Dave, and I am one of the undead…a vampire. I was a middle aged man of thirty eight when I was turned by one of my employees, a large headed, bespectacled predator in the night named Ryan. In the year that followed, I would spend my nights feasting on the rodents and mutated deer that roamed in the darkness. I thought I would go mad without ever tasting of Taco Bell again, but overtime, I grew to love the warm blood of two headed rats and capri sun blood packs. I eventually made some friends in the dark alleys of Bartertown; friends who shared my particular ailment of needing to feast on human blood. They took me in and made me a member of the poetry slam and fan-fic society at the local bar and grill. Our podcast tonight takes place at that very establishment, Lestat's Bar and Grill, during a very special month-long promotion, called Vamptober. Tonight's feature: a screening of the 1994 Anne Rice classic…Interview with the Vampire. I'm joined this evening by my fellow cinephiles and blood suckers Mike, Ryan, Jackie, and special guest: Janna. Topics of discussion in this episode include the era of peak bad movie accents; Oprah tries to save our souls by walking out of a press screening; and finally, we play Marry, F@*K, Kill with Louis, Lestat, and Armand. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.com That will do it for the first act of Apocalypse Video's newly christened "Vamptober Spooktacular". When we return, we'll suit up in our tight fitting leather outfits and brandish our dual pistols as we descend into 2003's Len Wiseman vampire-matrix mashup: Underworld. Note: Unfortunately, our episode on Super Xuxa vs Satan will be postponed until November due to events beyond our control (or, more specifically, one of the store's staff fumbling the audio of said episode and absconding to a foreign country with the episode masters. This employee, who will remain unnamed - it rhymes with Schmike - has been punished severely.

Soju from the Straight Chilling Podcast joins Caitlin to discuss 2003's Underworld, an underrated gem of vampire cinema. We talk about the excellent worldbuilding, the thoughtful themes, and the sexy, cool styling. We are Underworld vamps, through and through. Tangents include all things vampire: Halloween vampire movies, dealing with the boredom and isolation of eternity, a vampire FMK, vampire thirst, and the Underworld sequels. Also cryptids.
In episode 18 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Isi and Ajay spend some time with a handful of big news items at the intersection of politics and media—from the Skydance-Paramount merger (and other instances of media market concentration) and its implications for American newsmedia (and its potential new gatekeepers); to Charlie Kirk's assassination, its aftermath, its mediations with mass cultural objects (like alleged HellDivers II bullet etchings or Nepalese protestors with One Piece flags); the culture industry's failure to perform even its therapeutic function; and the growing exclusivity of once-accessible arts venues and performance spaces! A wide ranging discussion of summer media diets follows, beginning with Isi's recent love affair with the Western genre. The two discuss their shared fondness for Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone's many collaborations and the unmatched brilliance of HBO's Deadwood. Turning to the world of gaming, Ajay considers tragic endings (Expedition 33, the Death Stranding franchise), slow gaming (Herdling), and the relationship between gaming and choreography (Split Fiction). Also under consideration: what Joe Wright's miniseries, Mussolini: Son of the Century, gets right about the fascist imaginary; what Len Wiseman's Ballerina gets wrong about the appeal of John Wick; and what Foundation and The Sandman suggest about the challenges of adaptation and the culture industry's recent predilection for a 21st century spin on classical tragedy. Along the way, they return repeatedly to a longstanding PCM preoccupation with medium-specificity as well as the general bleakness seeping into the cultural reflections of this historical moment. This week, we review Underworld (2003), Len Wiseman's sleek, gothic action-horror hybrid that dives into the centuries-old war between vampires and werewolves. Kate Beckinsale stars as Selene, a stoic vampire warrior caught in a web of bloodlines, betrayal, and forbidden love. With its moody visuals, leather-clad aesthetics, and Matrix-inspired gun-fu, this cult favorite explores themes of loyalty, identity, and the blurred lines between predator and prey.Is eternal war a curse of the undead, or just bad communication with fangs? Cinematographer Romain Lacourbas returns to Below the Line to talk about crafting Ballerina, the latest stylish installment in the John Wick universe. This week on Below the Line, Skid is joined by Cinematographer Romain Lacourbas to discuss his visual approach to Ballerina, from the film's sweeping Prague exteriors to its tightly choreographed fight scenes. Romain breaks down his collaboration with Director Len Wiseman, the decision to shoot single-camera action, and the creative problem-solving behind some of the film's most explosive moments. We cover: Building trust with Len Wiseman — and how the director's homemade pre-vis videos helped shape their collaboration Adapting the look of John Wick to a new city — with its own palette and texture Leveraging Alexa 35 cameras and Hawk Class-X anamorphic lenses to add volume and texture — a deliberate choice to highlight Philip Ivey's distinctive production design Planning and executing long-take action — including that grenade-filled basement sequence Why most stunt scenes were shot with a single camera — and how that impacted timing, blocking, and performance Leaning into practical effects, from real explosions to blood rigs and rain-slicked streets Capturing Hallstatt's natural beauty — even on a tight shooting schedule Romain also reflects on the freedom he had as a DP, his continued partnership with Camera Operator James Frater, and how working with a detail-driven director made the difference.

Promis ON NE SPOILE PAS ! Jeff is on vacation this week, so it's up to Derek and Amir to pull off the rare double feature episode. In a week of dueling popcorn blockbusters, which crowdpleaser — John Wick spinoff Ballerina or racing drama F1 — will reign supreme? We talk Ana De Armas, Brad Pitt, and the highs and lows of both movies.
When will Ana de Armas's juice start juicing? Could it be in this weekend's John Wick: Ballerina?! We don't know. Haven't seen the movie yet. But, Jason and Rosie are prepared to speculate about what this role means for de Armas' career, the state of John Wick, and whether or not Len Wiseman will add werewolves to this series. "From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina" (or just "Ballerina" for short) is the fifth film in the "John Wick" franchise, serving as a spin-off set between the events of "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" (2019) and "John Wick: Chapter 4" (2023). It is the first installment not to be directed by Chad Stahelski, with action director Len Wiseman taking over the reins and featuring Ana de Armas in a new role while Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick (in his final screen appearance before his untimely death), and Ian McShane reprise their roles from the franchise. Wiseman was kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about his work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. The legend of 1995's Waterworld suggests that it was a huge flop and a criticial disaster. The truth? It was neither. But it was one of the toughest Hollywood productions of the 1990s, and its story continued even after the arduous shoot was complete. In this episode, Simon goes through the origins of the film as a low budget idea, right through to the emergence of a longer, alternate cut to the film: The Ulysses Cut. The second half of this episode is given over to Len Wiseman, who talks to Ryan Lambie about Ballerina, a lost moment in an OAP's home, Die Hard, getting fired from ILM, and working with Roland Emmerich. We make a case for Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2 (1990) as the platonic ideal of a blockbuster sequel - a bigger, dumber version of the original with a great supporting cast which delivers on the formula and also serves as a better “Christmas movie” than the first one to boot. We itemize our issues with McTiernan's return to the franchise with Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), and trash the final two films in the series, Len Wiseman's Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and John Moore's rock-bottom final entry, 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, inexplicably set in Russia. Dick story "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale". We discuss the film's long gestation period under several different producers and directors, most notably as a project for Hit Factory fave David Cronenberg. Then we go long on the film's startling prescience, it's themes of revolution against the extractive brutalist of an imperialist force, and Verhoeven's metatextual commentary on filmic reality as psycholgical mirror and wish fulfillment fantasy. Elsewhere, we discuss the dire 2012 Len Wiseman remake starring Colin Farrell and how it betrays and insults its audience by stripping away any and all subtext.
