We make a case for Renny Harlin's Die Hard 2 (1990) as the platonic ideal of a blockbuster sequel - a bigger, dumber version of the original with a great supporting cast which delivers on the formula and also serves as a better “Christmas movie” than the first one to boot. We itemize our issues with McTiernan's return to the franchise with Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), and trash the final two films in the series, Len Wiseman's Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and John Moore's rock-bottom final entry, 2013's A Good Day to Die Hard, inexplicably set in Russia. The highly anticipated Ballerina, a spin-off from the popular John Wick franchise, faces a 12-month delay and is now set to hit theatres on June 6, 2025. Despite the disappointment of the postponement, fans can expect an even more spectacular film as series creator Chad Stahelski joins director Len Wiseman to shoot additional action scenes. The movie, set between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, features Ana de Armas as the lead alongside returning stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, and the late Lance Reddick. The decision to position the film in this timeline adds an element of suspense regarding the fate of Reeves' character. The plot follows a young female assassin, portrayed by de Armas, seeking revenge for the murder of her family, promising an intense and gripping cinematic experience.

We discuss the film's long gestation period under several different producers and directors, most notably as a project for Hit Factory fave David Cronenberg. Then we go long on the film's startling prescience, it's themes of revolution against the extractive brutalist of an imperialist force, and Verhoeven's metatextual commentary on filmic reality as psycholgical mirror and wish fulfillment fantasy. Elsewhere, we discuss the dire 2012 Len Wiseman remake starring Colin Farrell and how it betrays and insults its audience by stripping away any and all subtext. Len Wiseman's debut in 2003 was no cause for celebration, but it could be said that Underworld, the film he popped his cherry on, was. Featuring Kate Beckinsale as Selene, the vampire enchantress who hunts werewolves and was responsible for the most sexual awakenings since Princess Leia went commando. This flick is basically Romeo and Juliet with sexy vampires and werewolves done with the late ‘90s glossy dark esthetic and broodiness. Oh, also, it spawned four sequels, a series, and a metric ass-load of cash while cementing neoprene bodysuits as my new fetish. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent debate werewolf lipstick and mixed-race relationships as we do our best to decide if the Underworld underwhelmed, or lives immortal.

Irene the Black Metal Pastry Chef is back to chaperone Dylan through the bluest movie of all time and the inspiration for countless internet fiction, Underworld. Directed by Len Wiseman, who stole Kate Beckinsale from Michael Sheen, it's a tale of romance and violence, goth cryptid violence that is as vampires battle w̶e̶r̶e̶w̶o̶l̶v̶e̶s̶ lycans while destinies unfold and all manner of complicated love plays out. To complement the drama, it boasts a moody soundtrack courtesy of Danny Lohner featuring Page Hamilton of Helmet, David Bowie, Skinny Puppy, and A Perfect Circle. Even better, the flick's got UV bullets, early 00s vampire fashion, silver goo bullets, shooting out floors to get downstairs, wrist blades, and lycans that learn the hard way why you shouldn't rub-climb on walls. Dylan and Irene also discuss when it is appropriate to cover Nine Inch Nails and when it is not and how Krallice opened for Krallice. Total Recall 2012 movie review is mostly the Salty Nerds talking about how many times they fell asleep while watching this extremely boring action movie. This "reimagining" of the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film from Paul Verhoeven comes to us from the creator of the Underworld franchise, Len Wiseman. Starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, and Bryan Cranston, Total Recall is the story of Douglas Quaid who may or may not be a secret agent that's forced to choose between his hot wife and his hot girlfriend in order to save the world from evil corporate interests, all while never going to Mars. Though this movie is visually stunning (with lots of lens flare!) and the actors are all very good looking, it's missing the charm and fun of the original film, and is the epitome of a "slacktion" film. Slap on your Hot Topic choker and zip up those combat boots - we're going to the Underworld! Len Wiseman's 2003 Underworld hit all of the goth fantasy movie notes: vampires vs lycans, pleather aplenty, and a moody, kind of weird romance plot. Everyone is wet, everyone is in a corset, and the NQD gals are just wondering where the heck this movie takes place.
A remake of the film Total Recall (1990), author Philip K. Dick's classic Sci-Fi short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale returns to the big screen starring Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, and Kate Beckinsale, and directed by Underworld's Len Wiseman. The planet has been decimated by chemical war in the late 21st century, leaving only two nations -- the United Federation of Britain and the Colony. Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a factory worker with a stable job and a loving wife (Beckinsale), but upon learning that a company named Rekall could grant him the memory of the ultimate espionage adventure, he decides to take a virtual vacation. But in the midst of having the new memories implanted, something goes haywire. He's branded a spy, the authorities close in, and he quickly flees for his life. Later, Quaid discovers that his life and memories were implanted. He joins forces with rebel soldier Melina (Jessica Biel) on a mission to track down Matthias (Bill Nighy), the head of a resistance movement that's been labeled a terrorist organization by the tyrannical Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston). Cohaagen seeks to control the entire free world. The harder Quaid fights to defeat him, the clearer it becomes that his memory had been altered long before he walked into Rekall.
The DOtD squad go bump in the night as they review Len Wiseman's "Underworld”. The dhampirs discuss the film's 2000's drip, whether it stays true to vampire/werewolf lore, and why Kraven is a little bitch. Spoilers in the coven.

Mark and David Cross (of the Award Wieners Movie Review Podcast) discuss the 2006 film Underworld: Evolution. Directed by Len Wiseman, and starring Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Tony Curran, and several cans of paint, the movie focuses on the continuing war between vampires and werewolves that was introduced in the 2003 film Underworld (listen to the episode!). In this episode, they discuss nonstop action, storage containers, and the excellence of Kate Beckinsale. Isaac and Chris get together and have a few laughs over Live Free or Die Hard. Does the 2007 film successfully pit Timex McClane against its vindictive, digital-age villain? Or was this once-R-rated summer blockbuster cut to pieces for the sake of that sweet, sweet PG-13 money? This week, our two action-aficionados pay their respects to the Die Hard franchise, reminisce over Len Wiseman's directing career, and try to assess just how 2000s this movie truly is. Love it? Hate it? Share your own take on Twitter (@pickyourtake), Facebook, YouTube, or by email, at pickyourtakepod@gmail.com.
Mark and David Cross (of the Award Wieners Movie Review Podcast) discuss the 2003 film Underworld. Directed by Len Wiseman, and starring Kate Beckinsale, Michael Sheen, Scott Speedman, and Bill Nighy, the movie focuses on a centuries old battle between surly werewolves and snotty vampires. In this episode, they talk about superhero landings, lounging vampires, and Billy Nighy putting a vampire/werewolf hybrid in a headlock. Enjoy!
Critics largely said it sucked, but fans turned this Kate Beckinsale vampire-werewolf flick into a five-movie franchise. Derivative exercise in style or howling good time? We're breaking it down.
“Whether you like it or not, you're in the middle of a war that's been raging the better part of a thousand years. A blood feud between vampires and lycans. Werewolves.”Moving from the art department on films like Independence Day to commercials to music videos, it makes sense that Len Wiseman brings a very specific look to his films. Pairing that look with his passion for genre movies, it seems obvious that he would be the man behind the Underworld franchise. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off our foray into Wiseman's franchise with is 2003 film Underworld. We talk about the history of werewolves and vampires and how their pairing works effectively. We look at Wiseman's journey to this film and how it was his art background that nabbed him the job. We chat about Kate Beckinsale as Selene and why she works so well in this film and franchise, which came at a point in her career where it seemed like a step away from the expected path. We touch on Scott Speedman, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen, and other actors and what they bring to the table. We discuss the soap operatic feel the script has and how it works in context of this story. We look at the team behind the cinematography, production design, costume design, and music and how well their individual parts come together to form this unique whole. And we look at the cinematically defining moments that make even the sometimes dated CG work. It's a delightful and fun dive into a brilliantly constructed world. We have a great time talking about it so check it out then tune in!
