We previously had Dr. Reid on in episodes 52 and 53 (linked below if you want to hear!) to talk to us about Indigenous representation in popular movies and they quickly became listener favorites. This time around, he's bringing his passion for pop culture history with the story of the game of Tetris. From its origins behind the Iron Curtain of the Soviet Union to becoming the best selling game in the world. Next, Laurel presses "start player 2" and picks it up with the console wars between Nintendo and Sega during the 80s and 90s. It was Sonic vs. Mario, David vs. Goliath, underdogs vs. the video game titans, who emerges as the winner? Finally, Kt brings it to the final level with ancient civilizations and how they handled solar eclipses. What did these great cosmic events mean to ancient peoples? Were they seen as a bad omen? It's a totally different topic altogether because this is Hightailing Through History where two sisters get high and surprise each other with a story from history's vault of the weird and the wonderful! Welcome to episode two of season two! In this episode we get to realize our dream of being Bill and Ted: plucking a historical figure out of time and sitting down with them to talk history and hear one of their most juicy (and most excellent!) stories! We are joined in the Smoke Circle by Bryan Austin, first person historical interpreter of Benjamin Franklin as well as other historical people in America's founding. We talk about his experience as a first person interpreter as well as dig into one of the juiciest and potentially scandalous stories from Ben's life--the Craven Street Corpses (did you hear that they found skeletons in the basement of the house Franklin lived in while in London?!) Afterwards, Laurel talks about the lost state of Franklin, named after ol' Benny Franks, which was almost America's 14th state. We also learn about other potential states that nearly became a part of the union. Kt wraps things up with the history of the Boston Tea Party, celebrating its 250 year anniversary on December 16th, 2023! *~*~*~* Connect with Bryan Austin! Why, then, have so few people heard of her? Next, Kt takes us south to learn about the history and the peoples of the many islands that make up what is known as the Caribbean. Lozen, Osh-Tisch and We'wha: Indigenous Two Spirit Icons; The Mysterious Sword of Goujian

Hey cool kids. Welcome to Episode 62. It this episode, the sisters take a moment to explore what it means to be Midwestern Americans: why do we love ranch dressing so much? Why does it take so long to say good bye and the use of the exclamation "ope!" Kt shocks us all by initiating the bottle, leaf, grinder battle for the first time in our 62 episodes, which was absolutely unprecedented and shocking. Laurel kicks off the history party with talking about Indigenous two spirit people of the North American Great Plains and Southwest. Laurel's portion discusses what the modern term "two spirit" means and a few notable figures in history to which this term would apply. She tells us about Lozen, an Apache warrior and shaman; Osh-Tisch, a baté from the Crow Nation; and We'wha, a talented artisan and cultural ambassador for the Zuni tribe. Next, Kt takes us through the history of the mysterious Sword of Goujian, which was buried in an underwater tomb for over 2,000 but showed no signs of tarnish upon its discovery, looking just as fresh as if it were made the day before. *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Images of Lozen, Osh-Tisch (on left in the photo) and We'wha Image of the Sword of Goujian Close Up of Blade's Design *~*~*~*~* The Socials! Did you know that London had an all-women gang for at least 80 years through the 19th and 20th centuries (perhaps even for 175 years!) Neither did we! Their story seems to be a footnote in history but these gals were fierce and one of London's most feared gangs. Laurel introduces us to the gang, their potentially long history as well as their glamorous queens who led the group with military precision and an iron fist. Next, Kt takes us to Hawaii to meet the amazing man who brought surfing to the world, Duke Kahanamoku. He was a world record swimmer, surfer and Olympian and is an enduring example of aloha to the world. *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Picture of Alice Diamond The Show that will *feature* the Forty Elephants called A Thousand Blows Pictures of Duke Kahanamoku Waterman Documentary Filmography for Duke Kahanamoku Our Episode on Queen Lili'uokalani, Hawaii's Last Sovereign Monarch *~*~*~*~* The Socials! Welcome to episode 60! Get ready for some adventurous history. Laurel kicks things off with one of history's biggest, ugliest scientific feuds. At the center of it are two paleontologists--Edward Drinker Cope and Othniel Charles (O.C.) Marsh. Once friends turned bitter rivals, their race to be at the forefront of their field led to decades of mud-slinging and personal and professional ruin but left us with a wealth of knowledge in paleontology! Next, Kt takes us through the history of wayfinding, a thousands of years old tradition of navigation that allowed Pacific Islanders to travel the vast expanse of the treacherous Pacific Ocean using the sun, stars, waves, debris and migratory patterns of birds (and more) *~*~*~*~ Mentioned in the Stories: Pictures of Edward Drinker Cope and O.C. In Episode 59, Kt takes the reins and recounts the history of the Pony Express, which bridged the gap in mail and communication delivery while the railroad and telegraph were making their way to the American west coast. Through rain, shine, snow and hostilities, the young men of the Pony Express got the job done! Next, Laurel tells of the fun--but oddly mysterious--history and production of glitter. From its beginnings in Upper Paleolithic cave paintings in the form of mica and other crushed minerals, to its mass production in the U.S. state of--where else?--New Jersey. Glitter has had a long history being used by all kinds of people all over the world so why is the production of it today so shrouded in secrecy?
