Missouri's 2025 legislative session begins on Wednesday January 8 at high noon at the Statehouse in Jefferson City. Republicans will once again have supermajorities in both legislative chambers. Senate Majority Leader Tony Luetkemeyer (R-Parkville) joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri". He notes newly-elected state senators from both parties will be sworn-in in January, and that Governor-elect Mike Kehoe (R) will be sworn-in on January 13 on the Statehouse lawn. Senator Luetkemeyer is focusing on public safety, saying St. Louis and Kansas City have been among the five most dangerous cities in America in recent years. He says both cities have significant officer shortages, and supports legislation aimed at helping to boost recruitment and retention for those two police departments. Senator Luetkemeyer also supports state control over the St. Louis Police Department. Senator Luetkemeyer, a Mizzou graduate, also discussed Mizzou football's success and its victory in this week's Music City Bowl:

You'll be casting ballots in Missouri tomorrow on constitutional amendment five, which would allow the Missouri Gaming Commission to issue one additional gambling boat license to operate on the Osage River at the Lake of the Ozarks. Amendment five spokesman John Hancock has told 939 the Eagle that the Lake of the Ozarks community desperately wants and deserves this project. Mr. Hancock says if voters approve the ballot measure, the casino would be built near the quarry on Highway 54 at the Lake of the Ozarks. He says the boat would provide about 700 good-paying, year-round jobs. Supporters say those would be union jobs, along with a new convention center and hotel. There is opposition to the measure and from some local residents who don't want the boat. U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth), who represents the Lake of the Ozarks on Capitol Hill, joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." 939 the Eagle's Brian Hauswirth asked the congressman how he feels about the ballot measure. Congressman Luetkemeyer tells listeners that while he believes Amendment 5 will pass statewide, he doesn't like it and says locals are not happy. Congressman Luetkemeyer tells listeners that the Lake of the Ozarks is a family destination for families. Congressman Luetkemeyer also discussed the presidential election during the live interview and blasted the Harris-Walz Democratic ticket, saying he served with then-Congressman Walz on Capitol Hill and that Walz didn't do his homework. Congressman Luekemeyer also blasted the national news media for its coverage of the presidential election:

Former State Sen. Bob Onder (R) captured 47 percent of the vote in Tuesday's seven-way GOP primary to try to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) on Capitol Hill. Mr. Onder received about 49,000 votes, defeating former State Sen. Kurt Schafer (R-Columbia) by about 10,000 votes. The district includes Columbia south of Broadway, Jefferson City, Ashland, Fulton, Boonville, California, Kingdom City, Wentzville and O'Fallon. Congressman Luetkemeyer taped a radio ad before the election saying former Senator Onder does not live in Missouri's third congressional district. That is correct; Missouri's congressional boundaries are redrawn every ten years and Onder's current home is just outside the third district in Augusta. That's in St. Charles County. Senator Onder tells listeners that he's lived in the 3rd district for 24 of the last 25 years and that he and his wife are currently working with a realtor and will move. He also says that if he defeats Democratic nominee Bethany Mann of Wentzville in November, he hopes to be able to serve on the U,S. Missourians in all 114 counties and in St. Louis city are casting ballots in the August primary election on Missouri constitutional amendment 4. If voters statewide approve Amendment 4, it would allow the Missouri Legislature to increase minimum funding for the Kansas City Police Department. Missouri Senate Judiciary Committee chair Tony Luetkemeyer (R-Parkville), who represents 75,000 constituents in Kansas City, joined us live this morning on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." Senator Luetkemeyer tells listeners that he's been working on the measure since 2022, saying Kansas City tried to defund the KCPD in 2021 of about $42-million. Some Democratic state lawmakers say it wasn't a defunding but was rather a reallocation of the funding. Senator Luetkemeyer disagrees, telling listeners he doesn't want Kansas City to become another Seattle or Portland. He also says a vote for Amendment Four supports the men and women in blue. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas (D) opposes Amendment four, saying KCPD's budget has increased since he became mayor. Missourians approved Amendment Four at the polls in 2022, but there was a legal challenge involving that measure's fiscal note. Senator Luetkemeyer tells listeners that all Missourians are impacted by this measure, noting Kansas City is Missouri's largest city. Passage requires a simple majority of voters statewide:

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-St. Elizabeth) says congressional redistricting has reduced the number of "swing districts" nationwide from 74 to 51. The retiring congressman joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri", telling listeners that while there's a good chance the U-S House will remain in GOP control after November, it will be tight. He notes the GOP currently has just a one-vote margin. Congressman Luetkemeyer tells listeners that while voters in his red GOP district think former President Donald Trump "walks on water," voters in some swing districts view the former president as toxic. Congressman Luetkemeyer's district includes much of Columbia as well as Jefferson City, Boonville and Fulton. He says the swing districts are critical to retaining GOP control in 2024. Congressman Luetkemeyer also discussed the recent verdict against former President Trump in New York, describing it as "a complete travesty that makes a mockery of our judicial system." Congressman Luetkemeyer also says "it's clear that this trial was designed to achieve a predetermined outcome," suggesting it could be overturned on appeal:

It was another Sunday morning of sometimes heated but always civil political debate on Hancock and Kelley for Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024. Republican consultant John Hancock and Democratic consultant Michael Kelley discussed the following topics: The City of St. Louis is reporting major drops in crime, but critics don't trust the numbers. … Missouri Governor Mike Parson issues an executive order banning foreign adversaries from owning Missouri farmland within 10 miles of military installations. Fellow Republicans say it's too little, too late. … There are growing calls for Governor Parson and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to take action against the owner of Northview Village nursing home in St. Louis. The home was closed with little warning and without full accounting for the 175 residents. One resident with schizophrenia has been living on the street since without his medication since Dec. 15. … Longtime Republican Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer makes a surprising announcement with his party clinging to a slim majority in the House of Representatives: he is not running for reelection. He represents Missouri's 3rd Congressional District, which stretches from Jefferson and St. Charles counties to Jefferson City and the Lake of the Ozarks. … As the nation marks the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol, President Biden makes the riots the top issue of his reelection campaign, jettisoning his focus on “Bidenomics.” … The U.S. Supreme Court will review the removal of former President Donald Trump from primary election ballots in Colorado. This comes as a new effort is launched to remove Mr. Trump from the primary ballot in Illinois. … Big names turn up on unsealed court documents in a lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, the imprisoned accomplice of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. … Our quote of the week was from St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones, who undid a mask mandate for city employees just hours after it was issued. “Upon further review…” she said masking was recommended but no longer “mandated.” … Remember, if It's Sunday in St. Louis, it's Hancock and Kelley on FOX 2. The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6-3 decision on Friday that struck down the Biden administration's plan to forgive student debt for more than 43-million American borrowers. U.S. Rep. Cori Bush (D-St. Louis) is blasting the ruling, calling for expanding the court. She tweeted on Friday that "Student debt cancellation is a racial justice issue — Black and brown people are disproportionately harmed by the student debt crisis. Inaction is not an option." Congressman Luetkemeyer tells 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" that the U.S. Supreme Court made the correct decision:
