Watch the video version of this conversation on our YouTube channel ►/ @flamebearers Marzieh, the daughter of two Afghan parents, grew up as a refugee in Iran. "They treated us differently" she shares, which eventually led her family to move back home to Afghanistan. In her home country, Marzieh joined the Taekwondo national team and quickly climbed the ranks, where she remained until the 2021 Taliban takeover. That's when everything changed... Women can no longer go to school, the gym, or even outside without a male chaperone. As Marzieh shares, "The Taliban told me not to come back to the gym and if I did, they would do what they wanted with me." She had to flee the country and has since lived in France, where once again, she's a refugee. Despite settling into a new country, home is always on her mind; "I have to use my freedom to talk about Afghan women...Nobody will kill me here if I talk about the Taliban and the problems." So that's what she's doing. In today's episode, Marzieh shares what she wants the world to know about Afghan women (+ shares three asks below). As Marzieh looks to the future, she's not going to sugar coat things. Right now, no she's not hopeful for the future of Afghan women, but she shares that "after the dark, always comes light." Marzieh has three asks of you: 1. Write about Afghan women in your social media. Flame Bearers has graphics that you can share to support Marzieh and other Afghan women. DM us and we will share so you can post. 2. Donate to nonprofits working on the ground in Afghanistan. A few organizations to consider: World Food Program, International Rescue Committee, and Save the Children 3. If you're in a position to hire, employ or support a refugee in your community, do so. Meet Marzieh Saffarian, the collage artist behind @psychpersia. Marzieh is also a speech-language pathologist who I met during graduate school. Our conversation flowed in so many wonderful directions. We chat about her feminist artistic inspirations, the Iranian revolution, identity and assimilation, and the challenges both of us face around speaking our native language, especially given our speech and language backgrounds. I love how Marzieh so beautifully connects feminism, art, and culture in this episode. I hope you do too!Find Marzieh on @psychpersia and @vintagepersia.Here are links to Marzieh's collage art that I mentioned as well as the data I cited toward the end. 1. It's Friday, time for our panel discussion on this week's biggest stories! The government is reopening now that Congress and the president have agreed on a short-term budget deal. The deal keeps government agencies open until February 15. President Donald Trump said he would end the partial government shutdown for three weeks while negotiations over the border wall continue. He also indicated that he was open to declaring a national emergency or shutting down the government again if Republicans and Democrats cannot reach an agreement on wall money by the February deadline. Roger J. Stone Jr., a longtime Trump adviser, has been charged as part of the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller. He was arrested at his home in a pre-dawn FBI raid in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, appeared in court earlier today and reappeared on the steps of the courthouse proclaiming his innocence. He was released on a $250,000 signature bond. The New York Times opens their story with the following: “The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, revealed on Friday the most direct link yet between the Trump campaign's and WikiLeaks' parallel efforts to use Democratic Party material stolen by Russians to damage the election campaign of Hillary Clinton. In an indictment unsealed Friday, the special counsel disclosed evidence that a top campaign official in 2016 dispatched Roger J. Stone, a longtime adviser to President Trump, to get information from WikiLeaks about the thousands of hacked Democratic emails.” Does the indictment, in fact, provide the most direct link yet, and does it provide evidence that Stone was dispatched by a top campaign official to get information from WikiLeaks? He is charged with obstruction of an official proceeding, making false statements and witness tampering.Marzieh Hashemi, a news anchor for Iran's English-language Press TV who was detained by US authorities as a material witness for 10 days, is with her US family. She had been held in jail to make sure she would appear to testify before a federal grand jury in Washington, DC. And on Wednesday, the 59-year-old fulfilled her obligation as a material witness and was released from any further obligation.Venezuela's senior military figures signal backing for President Nicolás Maduro as Russia, China, Iran, Syria and Cuba have come down on one side. The United States, Canada, and countries in Western Europe are on the other. Senior figures in the Venezuelan military came out in support of Maduro today, a day after the US said it no longer recognized him as the country's leader and backed the opposition's Juan Guaidó instead. The geopolitical fault lines are clear. The US has decided to ignore the democratic process in Venezuela and is working to overtly orchestrate a coup, all while accusing Russia of violating US law and undermining the US democratic process.GUESTS:Lee Stranahan — Co-host of Fault Lines on Sputnik Radio.Colin Campbell — PhD student in the Department of Communication, Culture and Media Studies at Howard University's School of Communication. He has been a TV news reporter for more than 20 years. As a senior Washington, DC, correspondent since 2008, he has been a reporter-at-large, covering two presidencies, Congress and the State Department.Caleb Maupin — Journalist and political analyst who focuses his coverage on US foreign policy and the global system of monopoly capitalism and imperialism.
On today's show, the ongoing coup attempt in Venezuela by the Trump administration underscores the rift between anti-imperialists and those championing American Exceptionalism. And crowds in DC and all over the world rally in support of Press TV journalist Marzieh Hashemi, who was released this week by US officials after being detained and imprisoned for 11 days with no charges. She has not been told why she is being held in custody since her arrest on Sunday by the FBI at St. Louis Lambert International Airport while boarding a flight to Denver. She is African American, born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Muslim. She was transferred to Washington, where she is being detained. What's going on with the detention of Marzieh Hashemi? On Wednesday, when she was allowed to contact her children, Hashemi told them that male authorities had forcibly removed her hijab. She said she is able to walk around a courtyard but with her feet shackled, and has only eaten pretzels while in detention because she has been offered only foods that conflict with her religious dietary restriction. As background, she was born Melanie Franklin and is a convert to Islam. She is visiting the United States to film a documentary on the Black Lives Matter movement and to visit a brother who has cancer. When she was approached by authorities, she was given vague details on why she was being handcuffed, her son Reza, who was at the airport with her, told other family members. She said in her phone call to family that she still hadn't been charged with a crime. As of this time, the FBI has not responded to our request for comment on why Hashemi is being detained. With a Cold War mentality, President Donald Trump called today for an update of America's decades-old missile defense system that he said would protect the United States from emerging threats — while also promoting futuristic ambitions with his much-touted Space Force. What does this say about the state of American military/foreign policy? The initiative comes as the US worries about Iran and North Korea's ballistic missile capabilities, as well as technological advances made by the militaries of China and Russia. I'm a bit confused. He backed out of an effective treaty with Iran, is backing out of a treaty with Russia, the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty, and can't quite figure out how to deal with North Korea and China. Trump administration officials now say that the government shutdown is having more than twice the negative impact on the economy as they first estimated. The White House's Council of Economic Advisors failed to account for contractors not being paid (and who probably won't receive retroactive payments) or the ripple effects on the economy, such as: restaurant meals not being taken or movies not seen, or the greater personal impacts of not having money to buy food or pay rent, or having to sell a car. Sounds like they left a few variables out of their multi-variant equation. Really? How can so-called economic advisors to the White House miss these variables? The revised estimates from the Council of Economic Advisers show that the shutdown, now in its fourth week, is beginning to have real economic consequences. The analysis and other projections from outside the White House suggest that the shutdown has already weighed significantly on growth and could ultimately push the United States economy into a contraction. Mr. Kevin Hassett said yesterday that the administration now calculates that the shutdown reduces quarterly economic growth by 0.13 percentage points for every week that it lasts — the cumulative effect of lost work from contractors and furloughed federal employees who are not getting paid and who are investing and spending less as a result. That means that the economy has already lost nearly half a percentage point of growth from the four-week shutdown.
Marzieh hittades nedgrävd i en skog i Hökarängen, i maj 2016. Randi Mossige-Norheim granskar fallet.
