We continue our series of interviews with leading candidates for San Antonio mayor ahead of the May 3 election. Bob welcomes Gina Ortiz Jones, an Air Force veteran and former Undersecretary of the Air Force under the Biden administration, for a wide-ranging conversation about her bid to lead the city. Ortiz Jones discusses her personal journey from growing up on the Far West Side to her national security work in Washington, and how those experiences have shaped her approach to local issues. The conversation covers: • Her motivations for returning to San Antonio and seeking the mayor's office • Reflections on her leadership in the Pentagon—including policy reforms and obstacles for women and minorities in the military • How her national service influences her perspective on public education, economic opportunity, and housing in San Antonio • Views on the city's economic competitiveness with Austin, Dallas, and Houston, and strategies for attracting job growth • Her positions on the city's housing bond, downtown development, airport expansion, and the need for data-driven policymaking • Concerns about outside money in local elections and how national endorsements fit into a nonpartisan mayoral race • The challenges posed by state and federal tensions with city government, and the impact on local policymaking • The importance of early childhood education, affordable housing, and comprehensive climate action for San Antonio's future Ortiz Jones addresses questions about her connection to the city, her thoughts on critical topics like Project Marvel and Mayor Nirenberg's Ready to Work, and shares how her varied experience could inform both immediate and long-term city leadership. -- --  RECOMMENDED NEXT LISTEN:

10 pro-life rescuers on trial, Anti-Israel protestors derail San Antonio City Council, Chris Christie dropped out

It's Friday, January 12th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslim kidnappers keep pastors hostage despite getting ransom Two Nigerian pastors kidnapped along with others last month remain captive despite their denomination paying the ransom for their release, reports Morning Star News. Rev. Elkanah Ayuba and Rev. Simon Ezra, both of the United Methodist Church, were among at least 20 people kidnapped on December 19th from Yorro County in Taraba State.   On January 4th, Rev. Micah Dopa, president of the Southern Conference of the United Methodist Church, said, “As a Body of Christ, we mobilized and paid $12,264 for our members to be released, but the terrorists decided to release only the Muslim victims in their custody. It is clear that the terrorists' activities are a plot to erase Christians in the area.” Chris Christie dropped out Just days before the Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie dropped out of the Republican presidential race on Wednesday at a townhall meeting, reports LifeNews. CHRISTIE: “My goal has never been to be just a voice against the hate and the division and the selfishness of what our party has become under Donald Trump. It's also been to win the nomination and defeat Joe Biden and restore our party and our country to a new place of hope and optimism in this country. “I've always said that there came a point in time in this race where I couldn't see a path to accomplishing that goal that I would get out. And it's clear to me tonight that there isn't a path for me to win the nomination which is why I'm suspending my campaign tonight for President United States.” 10 pro-life rescuers go to trial next week On Friday, March 5, 2021 at 8:30am, some faithful pro-life Christians sought to rescue pre-born babies from certain death at an abortion mill, innocuously named Carafem Health Center, in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. As they peacefully blocked the door to the baby-killing center, they prayed that God would convict the mothers who had scheduled the executions of the babies in their wombs to choose life instead. Because the pro-life rescuers refused to leave, the police arrested them, reported NewsChannel5 in Nashville. To its shame, Biden's Department of Justice indicted these 10 rescuers on October 5, 2022 on charges of violating the misguided Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act and a conspiracy to violate the so-called constitutional right to abortion in the pre-Dobbs era.  The trial, which could lead to astronomical fines and up to 11 years in federal prison, begins next Tuesday, January 16th. Coleman Boyd, one of the indicted pro-life rescuers, videotaped part of that March 5th, 2021 rescue. Listen. BOYD:  “I will follow You, Lord and obey you. You show me what you want me to do, and I'll follow You and obey. What I can tell you it doesn't mean is comfortable American Christian living while babies are being murdered, while souls are slipping into hell. That I know it doesn't mean. So, whatever He's calling you to, you've got to seek the Lord. You've got to cry out to God and you've got to have a heart that I'm going to obey. ‘Be imitators of God as dear children and walk in love, just as Christ also loved us.'” (Ephesians 5:1) Later, when Boyd saw a couple outside the Tennessee abortion mill coming towards him, he said this. BOYD: “Good morning, guys. Can I give you some literature? It's the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You know that Christ Jesus came to give life. He came to lay down His life for us. “I'm not sure why you're here at this building today, but if you're here for this abortion clinic, I plead with you today: Turn away from abortion, turn away from death, and turn to Jesus Christ. You know that Jesus laid down His life so that you can have life. Please talk with us.” As The Federalist recently declared, “If peacefully protesting abortion is criminal, but firebombing pregnancy centers is not, there is no rule of law.” Indeed, Peter Breen, an attorney with the Thomas More Society, who is representing Paul Vaughn, one of the ten pro-life rescuers, appeared on Fox News Channel with Tucker Carlson and cited the rich American tradition of civil disobedience dating back to Martin Luther King, Jr. BREEN: “Those who were arrested were leaning on the tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King. He himself was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi. I mean, this is the great tradition of American civil disobedience. And it's not the sort of thing that you turn into a 10-year felony. We believe we have very strong defenses and hope to beat these charges at trial.” Please consider attending a prayer rally on Tuesday January 16th at 7:30a.m. right before their trial begins. The rally will be located at the Federal Court House, 801 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203. In a promotional email for the prayer rally, André De Toit, wrote, “We are living in a time where injustice rules, immorality is being celebrated openly, and truth is being perverted. Meanwhile, the Christian Church has grown cold and apathetic towards what God has called her to be.” Anti-Israel protestors derail San Antonio, Texas City Council meeting Yesterday, a group of about 20 anti-Israel protesters temporarily derailed the San Antonio, Texas City Council meeting just minutes into its first meeting of 2024 as they demanded a cease-fire, reports the San Antonio Express-News. Listen. ANTI-ISRAEL GROUP: “Ceasefire now. Ceasefire now. Ceasefire now. Ceasefire now. Free, free Palestine. Free, free Palestine.” Then, their chanting became personal as they accused San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who is Jewish, of genocide. ANTI-ISRAEL GROUP: “Ron, Ron. You can't hide. We charge you with genocide." LEADER: “Ron, Ron. You can't hide.” ANTI-ISRAEL GROUP: “We charge you with genocide. Hey, hey. Ho, ho. The occupation has got to go. Hey, hey. Ho, ho. The occupation has got to go.” One of the anti-Israel protestors revealed to KENS-5 TV their motivation behind shutting down the City Council meeting. MAZATL CIHUATL: “The main message to the city today is that we are going to make your life highly disruptive, highly inconvenient, until you acquiesce to our demands to sever your relationships with Israel and to immediately call for a permanent ceasefire.” After the meeting, Mayor Nirenberg told reporters, “We all want an end to the violence in the Middle East. We all want a just and lasting peace. The City Council is in no position to advance that.” This week, San Francisco made headlines when it became the largest city in the United States to call for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza, following Seattle, Detroit, and Atlanta.  Denver and Minneapolis are considering similar calls. 53% of U.S. pastors want to quit And finally, as American pastors have grown increasingly discontent with their profession, 53% have seriously considered leaving pastoral ministry since 2020, according to a new study from the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. Dr. Gary Slutkin has provided counsel and advice to elected leaders and health leaders across the United States regarding COVID-19. He has advised Mayor Ron Nirenberg and other Texas mayors. He has proven that epidemiological methods for disease reduction work and they work on things like violence. This was a fascinating discussion with a very interesting guest. Transcript: [music] Justin Hill: Hello, in Bienvenidos San Antonio. Welcome to the Alamo Hour discussing the people, places, and passion that make our city. My name is Justin Hill, a local attorney, a proud San Antonian, and keeper of chickens and bees. On the Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right. Welcome to today's episode of the Alamo Hour. My guest today is Dr. Slutkin. Dr. Slutkin is a medical doctor and epidemiologist. I'm stealing from your TED Talk bio a little bit. You're an innovator in violence reduction which we're going to talk about. Currently, founder and executive director of Cure Violence. Also, consigliere of sorts to some Metro health and mayors and city officials who are seeking your guidance on COVID. Dr. Slutkin previously served as a medical director for the San Francisco Health Department. He's worked for the World Health Organization. He's worked on epidemics all over Africa which we will discuss. Importantly, he is a well sought after epidemiologist on using data and science to cure issues and specifically, issues that people probably didn't think could be cured that way. Dr. Slutkin, thank you for being here. Dr. Slutkin: I'm happy to be with you, Justin. Justin: You're in Chicago, right? Dr. Slutkin: Yes. Justin: All right. You are my first non-San Antonio local or someone who's lived here for some amount of time but our show tries to have a real connection with San Antonio and Dr. Lesch, a previous guest and Mayor Nirenberg, also previously a guest have discussed COVID with you. I know you've provided some guidance and counsel. Talk to me about what you're doing right now in your role as providing some guidance to cities and leaders including our very own Mayor Ron Nirenberg. Dr. Slutkin: Well, I'm aware that the US has not really seen anything like this before, that's to say an epidemic of this nature that's so fast, so contagious, so lethal and many other parts of the world have. I had the opportunity to be helpful with World Health and some of the others. Although I myself have largely been working on reducing violence in this country and in other places recently, I had to quickly switch into a role of helping, supporting, guiding and training where there were needs, which is basically wherever you look and how to manage this because it's not clear. Besides the fact that it's new, a lot of behaviors need to be changed. People don't like to change behaviors, people don't want to change behaviors and there's so much misinformation as well. I've been talking with mayors and governors and the Mayor's Associations and the Governors Associations and trying to help understand what needs to be understood here. Which is that you can't tell who's infectious and who isn't, which is a really counter-intuitive thing that someone you know or someone who looks well, could be carrying it. That it's really that serious. That you can get it even just by talking and screaming or talking loud or it doesn't require coughing and that the results are really quite bad. For policymakers, they need to really make this so serious, and whenever we don't, we see the consequences and that has to do with the fact that the virus jumps when given a chance. Opening up, it means opening up for the virus and that's what everybody saw but not everybody knew it. Then also what the people themselves have to do. I've been guiding and training in this arena since late February, early March....

On The Alamo Hour, you'll get to hear from the people that make San Antonio great and unique and the best-kept secret in Texas. We're glad that you're here. All right. Welcome to this episode of The Alamo Hour. Today's guest needs little introduction Mayor Nirenberg joins us. He was District 8 city councilman. He's been elected to two terms in office as our mayor. He's currently guiding our city through what has to be unprecedented strain economically and just generally for all the citizenry. I met Ron in 2015 when he was a city councilman, his mutual friend introduced us, I asked him to come on to the show whenever we started then the pandemic happened. I've pestered him for a while to come on so, Ron, thank you so much for coming on and doing this. Ron Nirenberg: Thanks for having me, Justin, I'm excited to be here. Justin: The goal of our show is to give a little bit of color to the people that are making decisions and doing fun things and have passions about our city. I don't think you can be much more passionate about the city than being serving as the mayor. Everybody has to go through a top 10 I'm going to go through that with you just some general questions about who you are, bounce around when and why did you end up moving to San Antonio? Ron: Yes, sure. Well, so thank you for having me, it's been a while since I saw you so- Justin: I know, Ron: -this will have to suffice for now. Now I grew up just north of here in Austin, Texas. I was actually born on the East Coast in Boston. We moved to Austin, Texas in 1980, my dad's job moved us down there. I loved Austin in the '80s growing up there a residential neighborhood-friendly type of community. I was about to go back to the East Coast for school and my dad convinced me to come down to San Antonio to check out some schools and I went down to Trinity and I fell in love with it. I decided to enroll at Trinity and after four years at Trinity, I fell in love with San Antonio. It was in the mid-90s. San Antonio was coming into its own at that point. I remember that Mayor Peak was in office towards the end, and he had a great vision for the city, embracing green spaces, building an urban environment, and embracing all the cultural assets of the city. That's the San Antonio that I grew up with, for lack of a better phrase and I went away for graduate school and met my wife and we decided we're going to plant our roots in San Antonio we've been here ever since. Justin: We're happy to have you. I'm happy to have you. Ron: Thanks. Justin: You're very prominent on social media so I follow everything you're doing and this is a tough time to have a light-hearted conversation, but I want to ask about some things you're not covering. In our house, we are trying to support a bunch of our local restaurants and do things that probably is not the most economical thing to do at this time, but we know our friends need it. Any places you're frequenting eating out are you trying to spread the love or ya'll cooking at home? What are y'all doing? Ron: All of the above. Erika, my wife bears the brunt of the burden. When it comes to my son during the days at school, he's at home in school, he's in sixth grade. We try to eat together. It's amazing this pandemic has brought us closer together in many ways, the community. Certainly, we have...

Employee turnover is 200% in the high stress, high-burnout food service industry, and the average life span of a Quick-serve restaurant is 8.5 years.  Lisa is proud of the company’s 20-year history despite these odds.  As a result of increasingly unpredictable regulation and legislation, Lisa has started to advocate for small business at the local, state and federal levels in recent years.  During the 2017 Biennial session, Lisa worked with a US Congressman and State Representative on a bill to restrict state regulatory bills.  HB1290 was one of only 17% of the bills written that session, signed into law by the Texas State Governor.  During 2018, Lisa successfully fought against a Labor Peace Agreement that would have allowed labor unions to organize airport concessionaire employees.   During 2019, she was an outspoken opponent of Mandatory Paid Sick leave at the municipal level and testified repeatedly in the Texas House and Senate committee meetings.  She was also appointed by San Antonio’s Mayor Nirenberg to a Paid Sick Leave (PSL) task force representing the business perspective.  To stay abreast of potential legislation or regulations that can harm small business, Lisa serves on the NFIB Texas leadership council, is Public Policy Chair for NAWBO and a Director for the North San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.   About ACG   Founded in 1954, the Association for Corporate Growth has chapters worldwide representing 14,500 members.
