Teena Dare talks with Lauren Clark, co-founder of Tamarisk Community, as she shares her journey in creating belonging for young adults aging out of the foster care system in her community. Lauren always knew she wanted to work with kids in vulnerable situations, but it wasn't until she was faced with the realities of kiddos in social services in her own backyard that she found clarity for her next steps. And then the ones after that. This Spring Series is about the radical nature of belonging within the family of God. Lauren leads the way into the next few months by introducing some of the devastating realities that young people face when they enter adulthood without having a family to belong to. But she offers hope- the hope of a shared table, the hope that can show through the cracks of trauma as employers and communities become more informed and saturated in grace. Lauren also beautifully describes the way she has found Jesus in these low places and discovered an unmatched intimacy as she seeks to serve the very ones that Jesus came to love. 00:00 Introduction to Series and Episode 03:04 The Beginning of a Calling 04:03 Discovering a Passion for Foster Care 05:30 From Education to Social Work 07:06 Starting a Ministry for Foster Families 08:57 Launching Tamarisk 11:03 The Power of a Long Car Ride 14:24 Leaders Who Have Lived it 22:15 Closer to Suffering, Closer to Jesus 23:39 The Importance of Empathy and Trauma-Informed Care 31:58 Big Dreams for the Future Link to Resources: You can find Tamarisk Community on Instagram @tamarisk.community Or online at tamarisk.community Find out more about the Global Faith and Work Initiative: https://www.globalfaithandwork.com/ And the Surge Network: https://www.surgenetwork.com/ Watch our conversation on our youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gK1oXZyZLwg

The role that our workplaces play in encouraging and enabling our relationships at work, was largely taken for granted, until they were taken away from us.  A silver lining of the pandemic, we realised the impact of our workplaces and the role they play in our establishing and supporting the social & support networks in our lives.  And social connection is a foundation for building any community. Today's guest ARC Laureate Fellow Sharon K. Parker.  I was first introduced to Sharon and her work through my friend and Colleague Dr Meg Hooper of Carousel Consulting, and her S.M.A.R.T Work Design Model, to develop meaningful and motivating work.  This piece of work has been instrumental in underpinning our approach to work design and workplace design, a difference that Sharon will elaborate on in today's podcast.  Meg has been following Sharon's work for a very long time, and such I've invited her along to co-host today's episode!  ARC Laureate Fellow Sharon K. Parker is a John Curtin Distinguished Professor, Director of the Centre for Transformative Work Design at Curtain University, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology. Sharon has published more than 250 internationally refereed articles on topics such as work design, proactive behaviour, mental health, and job performance, has over 46,500 citations, and is ranked in the top .15% of global scholars in her field.   She is the founder of the S.M.A.R.T model, cofounder of the Thrive at Work Initiative, and has contributed to policy on work design in Australia and internationally.     With the breadth of research that Sharon has done, this podcast could go in any direction, but as we are focused on the role of community in the workplace this season, we've narrowed in on this topic and explored how the work she does overlaps with this ability to build community. So today, we are exploring; Her view on the relationship that exists between our workplaces and the role they play in building community Her S.M.A.R.T work design model and what the important factors are to consider in building community and where organisations could be letting themselves down The role of autonomy in buffering the effects of poor workplace design The definition of work design and the overlap to workplace design Some of the key consideration that designer, Culture Leaders and property managers/specialists should be looking at when it comes to workplace design   Sharon's perspective on this is fascinating and Meg & I were loving this conversation - we honestly could have chatted for hours.  So, I hope you love listening to this episode as much as we loved recording it!

In the final episode of this season of the podcast, Alistair Chiu and an anonymous Christian leader give us an inside look at how faith and work movements are being developed in the places they live. When it comes to developing movements like the ones described in this podcast, we can be tempted to assume that a “one size fits all” model will work. However, we are reminded in this episode of the need for faithful contextualization to meet the needs and questions of the city we are seeking to reach. As workers across the city press into integrating faith and work, the light of Christ within us will begin shining in the darkest of places. But cultivating these kind of movements will take a high level of adaptability, working with people that are different from us, and a deep desire to have alignment with co-laborers not as a prerequisite to relationship but as a by-product. And through all of this effort and strategy, we entrust ourselves to the One who will one day reign as King in our cities as it is in heaven. This marks the end of our journey of hearing global expressions of faith in work and rest. If you haven't listened to all of the previous episodes and guests, please check them out. When it comes to the integration of faith and work, it is never generic but always specific to the context we are in. The conversations around faith and work in a white collar setting are going to be drastically different than the conversations and questions of those working at the margins. In this episode, Abraham Cho and Kimberly Deckel explore how tangible expressions of how faith and work have been integrated in their cities and churches. But what's clear from the perspective of these two practitioners (Abraham and Kimberly) is that a missing link in the faith and work conversation is the necessity of having mutuality with those at the margins. Introduction: Josh McKenzie, believes in personal growth, equal opportunity and business as a force for good. He is the founder of Development Beyond Learning (DBL)-an award winning organisation using behavioural science to future proof businesses and careers. Josh also spends time to support the growing 100% Human at Work Initiative; a collective of organisations creating a better future of work for humanity. It is now a movement of more than 500 organisations including Unilever, Accenture and EY. Josh is an Australian raising a family in the UK. He considers himself a global citizen, is a proud father of 3 and a mad U2 fan.    Podcast Episode Summary This episode speaks to the important need to equip young people make the transition,  perhaps the biggest transition they make in life, from education to work through the development of human skills.    Points made over the episode U2 The band inspired Josh McKenzie in terms of having a purpose and giving meaning to what you do.  Josh first became interested in leadership and development at University in Australia where he was part of a student leadership body. It taught him that as individuals we have a lot more to learn than education alone affords When Josh joined the Corporate world he soon realised that there was a whole world dedicated to leadership & development, personal development and talent development – that prompted Josh to set up Development Beyond Learning. He noticed that the transition from education to the working world was probably the most difficult transition a young person can make. It is often underfunded and unsupported.  The Game of Corporate life is different with different rules.  For many young graduates there is a realisation that everyone around them is as smart as they  are and often with wisdom in years.  DBL is founded on 3 core principles.  Personal Growth: The idea we can learn the skills and beliefs we need to have the careers we want Opportunity: talent is everywhere but opportunity is not.  Career: To use your career as a force for good.  The future is human and it is human skills that make a person effective DBL make it possible to collapse the time it takes to realise that these human skills are important  Most young people will not get exposed to the idea that EQ, SQ are as important as IQ A lot of the problems we see in the world today are solvable with technical skills but require human skills as well in terms of critical thinking, self-awareness, negotiation and communication skills  The Good news is that more and more employers are investing in human development such as pre-boarding, on-boarding, 6-12 month development programs  Context is king. There is a difference between teaching a young person on a trading floor of an investment bank how to relate to his/her manager than a person sitting in a technology centre in India for example  Psychology and behavioural science is baked into the development programs  The DBL approach is comprehensive it involves a blend of virtual training and in person training teaching subjects like self-awareness, growth mindset, critical thinking, social intelligence and personal brand.  Young graduates can be sceptical and it is healthy to be sceptical not arrogant.  Evidence based research is vital, especially to connect with participants left brain  You can engage the right brain with high quality experiences, stories, relationships and engaging exercises but it is also important to have high quality content backed up by research Self-awareness can be perceived as a fluffy topic for investment bankers until they are shown the research that says 1,000 top executives cited self-awareness as the number one skill that helped these leaders become successful.  DBL are confident that 5 key behaviours will set graduates, interns and young people apart from others over the first 3-7years of their careers. Skills like self-awareness, building connections, having resilience & grit, growth mindset and mental wellbeing.  Mental Wellness is a topic that is now being addressed in graduate cohorts  Arguably young people have suffered the most by way of the pandemic & least resourced & supported over the many lockdowns Belonging & wellbeing are now important topics  DBL wrote a white paper, available on their website, which researched the topic of wellbeing  Young people joining organisations today have completed their studies virtually, have been hired virtually and are now often still working virtually.  The Pandemic coupled with the earlier work to attract diverse graduate pools has created the perfect storm. More than ever programs need to address belonging and mental wellness.  Organisations are also seeing the wisdom of putting some of the budgeted spend for graduates into management training for managers who have graduates on their teams.  Josh hopes that organisations do not swing back to how things used to be before the pandemic. Virtual does work. Hybrid working does work and can achieve more by providing a level playing field for all learners. Josh would argue that base line training is delivered virtually and augmented by premium in person training when it is warranted.  Investment in the future work force is going to mean more human development not less. In terms of our ever changing world it is important to bring graduates and interns through the organisation with human skills fit for purpose and value creation The 100% human initiative will support young talent emerge through the workforce with the skills to help navigate complex issues, work together really well, have humility help organisations be human.  Resources shared    https://www.developmentbeyondlearning.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/josh-mackenzie-92795710/

Transcript: Hello, this is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective. From the opening pages of the Bible, human beings are called to work and to be creative and resourceful with how we do our work. Work is central to what it means to be human. Nonetheless, it seems that work life in the modern world has been in a state of constant disruption. Changing technologies and changing global realities are driving what feels like “constant career chaos”. Therefore, it is very tempting for us to throw up our arms and settle for mediocrity or a less-than-optimal attitude. However, this is not a viable option for the follower of Jesus. St. Paul commands us: Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. (Colossians 3:23-24 ESV) In a fallen world, work is always fraught with difficulties—in the words of Genesis, “thorns and thistles” (Genesis 3:18). This is nothing new. However, the realities of the global world are taking this to a whole new level. Fortunately, there are quite a few good resources out there from a Christian perspective, such as “Made to Flourish” and the “Global Faith and Work Initiative.” These resources not only help us think through work in the modern world, but also provide practical aid for work in times of crisis. I encourage you to go to our website and find the transcript for this episode for a full listing of these resources. Work is one of the most basic ways we “worship” God. It is necessary, therefore, that we do it well. Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective. In recent years, the Council has grappled with this question, setting forth The Five “Cs”: Principles for Policymakers Regarding Benefits and Independent Workers.   Others are approaching the issue from the other direction. Shelly Steward, research manager for Aspen Institute’s Future of Work Initiative, recently co-authored Designing Portable Benefits: A Resource Guide for Policymakers, a paper that defines and describes benefits that are “portable, prorated and universal.” In this episode, Steward talks to host Jason Hammersla about why large employers should entertain and embrace the notion of portable benefits.
