In this episode we talk to Mark Holmes and Mike Ward about the Blue Light approach, which aims to challenge the belief that nothing can be done with drinkers who may be deemed as 'not wanting to change'. The Blue Light approach aims to show there are a range of positive strategies that can be used to manage risk, reduce harm and promote change. We discuss the ideas and myths behind 'change resistant drinkers', and explore what approaches and strategies are most effective when working with people with severe alcohol problems who are not currently engaging in alcohol treatment or other support. Mike Ward is from a Social Work background but has worked most of his career in the alcohol and drug field.  He is the co-author of the Blue Light Manual on Working with Change Resistant Drinkers but also other practical guides including Safeguarding Vulnerable Dependent Drinkers.  He is the author of over thirty serious case reviews about individuals with alcohol and/or drug use disorders.Mark Holmes. BSc, RMN, SPMH has been a mental health nurse for over 30 years.  Mark was being twice awarded Nursing Times Awards; The Mental Health Nurse of the Year in 2012 and LTC Team of the year 2016. He also works as an associate for Alcohol Change UK co-authoring the Blue Light Project and has had over 20 publications. He currently sits on UK alcohol clinical guidelines expert group, and Alcohol Care Teams Steering group (ACTION). Details of the Blue Light approach can be found here. It is an initiative to develop alternative approaches and care pathways for drinkers who are not in contact with treatment services, but who have complex needs. It challenges the belief that only drinkers who show clear motivation to change can be helped, and sets out positive strategies that can be used with this client group. The Blue Light manual sets out these strategies in detail and offers a fundamental positive message that change is possible. Author: Dr Gary Lamph Title: A World Café Approach that explored perspectives of people with lived experience and occupational experience Background - The diagnosis personality disorder is one which continues to split opinions. Negative connotations, stigma and negativity surrounds the diagnostic category. In recent years a movement to challenge the label and terminology of personality disorder has emerged. Aim – To explore the perspectives of the diagnostic label personality disorder with people with lived and occupational experience in a live conference world café based format. Methods – Adopting a World café participatory method provided a flexible and effective approach to capturing the qualitative views of people in a large group format. Table discussions were hosted using a co-facilitated model to capture the table discussions. Each table had different discussion points pertaining to the diagnostic label. The event ensured that necessary dialogue is developed, delivered and analysed in co-production. The unique methods and delivery will be discussed. Results - This study identified contrasting opinions towards the label of Personality Disorder and provides insight into the concerns described for both keeping and losing the label. Although many felt the words ‘‘personality'' and ‘‘disorder'' are not in themselves helpful, certain positive views were also revealed. Perspectives towards the label were influenced by the way in which diagnosis was explained and understood by patients and practitioners, alongside the extent to which service provision and evidence-based interventions were offered. With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Author: Jesse Ussman Title: The Online Health Information Seeking Behaviour of People of African Descent in the UK Abstract: The current digital transformation has had a significant impact on how people seek health information, including mental health support. This is especially relevant for People of African Descent (PoAD) in the United Kingdom (UK), who face unique barriers to accessing mental health services. This presentation is based on a recent qualitative study that explored the online health information-seeking behaviour (HISB) of PoAD in the UK. The study used reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with 21 PoAD aged 20 to 70 years and a mean age of 42.8 (SD ±11.4). Five overarching themes were revealed: internet literacy, attitudes towards social media, obstacles to online health information, trust in professional sources, and cultural influences on HISB. For mental health nurses, it is crucial to provide culturally sensitive mental health support that recognises the unique needs, beliefs, and online behaviours of PoAD. This presentation covers methods for overcoming obstacles to accessing mental health information online, such as addressing concerns about privacy, information overload, and mistrust in online sources. It will also highlight the potential of social media and online platforms in spreading reliable mental health information, improving digital health literacy, and promoting a community-based approach to mental health support. Mental health nurses can help bridge the gap between PoAD and mental health support by understanding and leveraging online HISB. This includes providing reliable and culturally appropriate mental health information and implementing strategies to enhance access to mental health services. The insights from this study offer a valuable framework for mental health nurses to develop inclusive, effective, and accessible mental health care services for PoAD, contributing to improved mental health outcomes and equity in healthcare provision.

With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Author: Sarah Traill Title: Making sense of the feedback experience: An interpretative phenomenological analytic study exploring the lived experiences of student mental health nurses receiving written feedback on their assessments. Abstract: The aim of providing students with written assessment feedback is to support future development (Carless & Boud 2018; Hattie & Timperley 2007; Pitt & Quinlan 2022; Winstone & Nash 2016). Feedback itself has been identified as having a powerful effect on learning and development (Hattie & Timperley 2007; Wisniewski, Ziere & Hattie 2019). In an age of neoliberal marketized education, feedback is a common source of students' dissatisfaction and thus detrimentally affects NSS and TEF outcomes (Winstone & Carless 2021; Winstone, Ajjawi & Boud 2021). In an attempt to enhance students' satisfaction and league table position, HE institutions have focused their efforts on consistency and standardisation of assessment feedback practices, yet satisfaction with assessment feedback remains poor (Winstone, Ajjawi & Boud 2021). This research explores the phenomena using IPA to draw out idiographic and group experiential themes that capture how students make sense of the feedback experience. This research considers feedback from an interconnected perspective, exploring the students understanding of themselves and their position in the world of education. The research identified two key conceptual themes of “Educational Baggage” and “The mediating influence of relationships”. Rather than approaches which game the NSS and TEF metrics, this research highlight the importance of authentic learner centred approaches to assessment feedback. The resulting principles of practice and recommendations offer flexible, adaptable, and efficient routes towards enhanced student engagement, agency, attainment and satisfaction.

With thanks to Prof Karen Wright and Dr James Turner for organising the event and the invitation to support with recording the sessions. Title: Back to the Future: How can Enrolled Nurses (Mental Health) experience of education and training inform nurse associate and other apprenticeship programmes Abstract: The return to the two-year programme of Nursing education draws comparisons to the Enrolled Nursing route which was phased out in the 1990s. The reasons for the Enrolled Nurses introduction were very similar to the Nursing Associate - a chronic lack of registered nurses and subsequent care gap in meeting patient need. Thus, looking back to the education and training experiences of Enrolled Nurses who also experienced a two-year apprenticeship programme and work-based learning appears to be timely. Using a historical qualitative methodology has potential to provide insights toward informing the future development of the two-year programme Trainee Nursing Associate route and beyond. The aim of the proposed research study is to explore Enrolled Nurses' experiences of education and training to inform the Nursing Associate and other relevant apprenticeship programmes.

A coding manual for qualitative researchers using NPT will facilitate transparent data analysis processes and will also reduce the cognitive and practical burden on researchers.

This study contributes to addressing that gap. The resulting co-created 21-item impact measure, which was tested for structural validity and internal reliability, shows promise and offers something original to the field by embracing a participatory approach to all stages of the research process. These early test results should be treated with a measure of caution; the methodological limitations of testing at just one university and with a limited age range of students are acknowledged. Future research will be required to strengthen internal consistency and address these limitations, and to establish the stability of the measure, before it can be claimed to meaningfully measure any changes resulting from service user and carer involvement in the curriculum.

After developing her own mental illness, Jane's passion for mental health nursing and desire to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness became a lifelong mission. Jane entered the field of mental health nurse academia to bridge the gap between personal experiences and professional expertise. Her unique perspective has enriched her teaching and clinical practice in profound ways. As a mental health nurse lecturer, Jane has a deep-seated passion for nurturing the next generation of mental health nurses. Her teaching style is not limited to textbooks and theory; it encompasses the lived experiences that have shaped her understanding of mental health. Jane is an internationally published mental health academic and has also authored a children's book exploring maternal mental health. Jane is a living testament to the transformative power of embracing one's past and channelling it into a passion for education, advocacy, and writing. Her academic biography reflects her unwavering commitment to the field of mental health nursing and her dedication to breaking down barriers and stigma surrounding mental illness. SJ - I left school at 14 with no GCSEs. I meandered around life with low paid jobs that made me unhappy. I had mental health issues myself. I sought help, then thought; 'I could do this', and suppor others. I joined the NHS at age 38 as a healthcare assistant then enrolled on the trainee nursing associate programme, then Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship and now aged 42 I'm a registered nurse and loving life and my role. There is a huge national need for psychiatric service providers to help all ages, from children to older adults.    —Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN As a family nurse practitioner, my passion has always been in the field of geropsychology - a specialty that utilizes psychological knowledge and methods to understand and assist older individuals and their families in maintaining well-being, conquering challenges, and reaching their highest potential during later stages of life.  This specialty is integral to our clinical practice, both in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.   Now, let's dive into what it means to be a psych mental health nurse practitioner and the incredible work done by remarkable practitioners like Drs. Tony Roberson and Cynthia Awadzi from GWU.  ▶️  Nurse Practitioner School: What Do Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners Do?   Key points covered in this episode:   Main Point 1:  What is a Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?   A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is a professional who evaluates, diagnoses and addresses the mental health needs of patients throughout their lives.    Offers prescribed medications and therapy to help patients who have mental health disorders or substance problems.    Responsibilities include conducting physical and psychosocial assessments and providing emergency psychiatric care and treatment.      Main Point 2: What does a typical day at work look like for a PMHNP?  The typical day's activities vary based on the patients and the clinical environment. A PMHNP meets patients for initial intakes, gathers their full psychiatric history and understands their current concerns. It involves assessing their symptoms, making a differential diagnosis, and developing a treatment plan.    Working in an inpatient setting, the focus will primarily be on stabilizing patients with the help of a mental health team. The goal is to prepare them for the transition to an outpatient setting.   Main Point 3:  What is the average salary for a PMHNP? Psychiatric nursing is known for offering generous salaries compared to other specialties in the field. While the salary also varies based on the state or area where you practice - on average, it is advisable to aim for at least $140,000 per year.   Graduate from GW are highly in demand as they are well-prepared to step into the workforce; so you can anticipate good compensation for the skills and expertise you bring to the table.   Main Point 4: Why should someone who wants to be a PMHNP apply to GW? The MSN: Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program option gives registered nurses the chance to broaden their horizons in healthcare. ✔️ The lifespan curriculum is one of the key factors that sets GW's program apart. It is crucial for individuals to have the freedom to explore their interests without limitations. That's why the program spans across children, adolescents, adults, and even the geriatric population - a feature to be proud of. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is its hybrid nature, making it convenient for working professionals. The vast majority of the coursework is asynchronous, meaning you can work at your own pace without the need for regular meetings with faculty or peers.  However, you'll still receive daily support from dedicated faculty who are always available to guide and assist you on your journey - fully committed to ensuring your success. ✔️ Another significant advantage of the program is a focus on addiction management. Many schools of nursing to not have this expertise, but faculty at GW do – ensuring students are prepared to help with our nation's addiction crises.   If you're already working as a nurse and are interested in becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, apply here: https://nursing.gwu.edu/msn-psychiatric-mental-health-nurse-practitioner   Send your inquiries to nursing@gwu.edu or contact us at Phone: 202-994-7901/ FB Fax: 202-296-1229   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About MelissaBPhD   Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FGSA, FAAN. She has faced six miscarriages, one ectopic pregnancy, and to her shock had a stroke whilst holidaying in Hawaii. Despite these challenges, Becky successfully had a son through egg donation and went on to write a series of children's books to address and reduce stigma surrounding fertility issues. Becky's fertility struggles began in her early 30s, and she initially believed she would easily conceive. However, she faced difficulties and went through failed IUIs and a miscarriage. She then experienced an ectopic pregnancy, resulting in the removal of one of her fallopian tubes. To relax before starting IVF, Becky and her husband traveled to Hawaii, where she unexpectedly had a stroke.Returning to Canada, Becky discovered she had suffered a stroke and feared it would hinder her chances of trying to conceive. After a year of recovery, including heart surgery, she received approval to undergo IVF with certain limitations. However, despite multiple attempts with her own eggs and her husband's sperm, Becky faced more miscarriages, causing her mental health to deteriorate. In her lowest moment, Becky was struggling despite her background as a mental health nurse practitioner. On the day of her final IVF attempt, she rushed home to take a pregnancy test, hoping for a positive result. However, the ongoing challenges took a toll on her mental well-being.“You have to take care of your holistic self. It's not just not drinking alcohol, eating healthy. You have to also work on your mental health because your mind and your brain controls the rest of your body. So it comes down  to ‘what can I control'? Because a lot of the things we lose control of when we go through fertility treatment, however, we can take control of our holistic health. That's what we can do and be okay with.” Tune in to this episode for an inspiring and heartwarming account that will leave you inspired.Becky offers all of our listeners some great resources. Please contact her via her website for her free CBT course: Ninja Mind F$&@ therapyHer book The Search for the Magical EggWww.beckymorrison.caInstagram @infertility_ninjaSupport the showI would love you to hit subscribe to find out when my next episode has landed and leave me a review :)✨Follow me on Instagram for all topics Donor Egg IVF - @donoreggmama✨ Check out my website www.donoreggmama.com✨ Find out all about my Community Membership for women on a donor egg pathway ✨To find out about the coaching programs I offer click here✨To join my free donor egg emotions support Facebook group click here✨ To be a guest on my podcast click here✨ Contact me here

In February the CDC released its latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey findings.  Somewhat needless to say the data is discouraging.  For example, in 2021 40% of high school students, 60% of high school female students and 70% of high school LGBQ students reported feeling sad or hopeless. Among other findings, 22% of high school students had seriously considering suicide, 18% made a suicide plan and 10% had attempted suicide - these percentages are the highest reported since the first Youth Risk Behavior survey was first fielded in 2011. During this 36-minute interview Dr. Trede and Ms. Shapiro begin by discussing Youth Risk Behavior Survey findings concerning sadness and hopelessness, data concerning girls, LGBQ students and suicidality generally. They discuss timeliness of care and care integration, self harm, therapeutic approach, alternative therapies, the importance of modeling pro social behaviors, and they note subject areas to improve behavioral health policy including policies to help remove the stigma associated with behavioral health and improve family support.    Dr. Felix Trede serves as the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center/South End Community Health Center Behavioral Health Clinician and Training Coordinator.  Dr. Trede began his career as a clinical case manager/rehabilitation specialist with Bay Cove Human Services in Boston in 2008.  He joined the Behavioral Health team at SECHC as an intern in 2014 before joining as a full-time staff member in 2018.  He earned his Psy.D. at William James College.Ms. Laura Shapiro serves as an East Boston Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.  Laura's career in pediatric and community health nursing begin in 1999 when she graduated with her BSN from Simmons College. As an RN, Ms. Shaprio worked as a school nurse for the City of Medford.  During that time, she received an M.Ed in educational administration from Bridgewater State University and began her PMHNP studies. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2013 with an advanced practice degree and completed her practicum at Lynn Community Health Center where she provided psychiatric consultations at their school-based health centers.  In 2021, she began working at EBNHC as a mental health nurse practitioner.  Laura also sees patients in private practice and is an adjunct faculty at Northeastern University's Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey is at: https://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/data/yrbs/yrbs_data_summary_and_trends.htm. Is Christianity responsible for racism? According to Amy Gallagher in her fight against the UK's NHS, the answer is no. Two years ago, Amy Gallagher was told she was unfit to engage with her patients since she disagrees with Orwellian principles foundational to woke ideology that view white people as the “problem of our time.” Today, I am joined by Amy Gallagher to discuss the shortcomings of this subtly vicious ideology with inherently detrimental impacts on psychotherapy as a profession along with the unparalleled negative outcomes for patients who are subjected to it. Amy Gallagher is a Mental Health Nurse who has been working in the UK National Health Service (NHS) for seven years. She has worked with adolescents and adults with a range of issues such as eating disorders, personality disorders, anxiety, depression, and psychosis. Amy has a postgraduate diploma in psychodynamic psychotherapy and is currently suing the NHS for suspending the final part of her training to become a psychotherapist because she disagreed with Critical Race Theory. You can follow Amy Gallagher's work on Twitter @standuptowoke and can donate to fund her legal fees and application for judicial review in her Travistock discrimination lawsuit on GoFundMe, here.In this episode we discuss how the death of religion on a social scale has created an environment rife with discrimination against thought diversity in therapeutic treatment. Amy argues that psychotherapy as a profession has been hijacked by an ideologically-driven oppression of viewpoint divergence, threatening the professional development of therapists, and as in Amy's case, open discrimination against Christian counselors and their patients. Amy sheds light on how the profession of psychotherapy suffers as a result of ideological principles lacking in an evidence base being taught as fact, and we discuss the negative effects and experiences patients endure as a result. Amy's case presents a unique point in time where people of certain demographics  are discriminated against by progressive puritanicals who believe that simplistic and divisive narratives are the only answer to the complexities of the human condition. In this episode, I mentioned previously aired episodes with Leslie Elliot, James Esses, and Andrew Hartz. Jacqui O'Riordan is an Advanced Nurse Practitioner from Harrogate, North Yorkshire in the UK. She has worked as a mental health nurse for almost 20 years, including working in a secure unit with chronically ill patients. She has worked in crisis assessment with Accident and Emergency and the Police since 2008.  Now 49, Jacqui was diagnosed as autistic and ADHD a year ago, and her two children are also autistic. Since learning more about autism, she has begun to question the lack of proper training in neurodiversity that mental health professionals in the UK are currently given. She wants to see a push for better training and the inclusion of autistic staff in planning and delivering training. To this end, she recently set up a working group of autistic staff who work in her NHS organisation, including a Consultant Psychiatrist, social workers, nurses and admin staff, to explore this further. In our conversation we talk about: ➡ How she and her children came to realise they were all autistic ➡ The positives and the challenges of living as a newly diagnosed family unit ➡ How her work as a psychiatric nurse has been impacted and informed by her deepening understanding of autism, and addressing the lack of knowledge and awareness in the profession Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. Theologian John Swinton was Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland. He spoke to Life & Faith on the day she died.   --- John Swinton has been many things in his life: Mental Health Nurse, Presbyterian minister, academic and author. He was also Chaplain to the Queen in Scotland, a role his mother was especially proud of! On the morning he was due to come into the CPX studio news came through that Queen Elizabeth II had died.   We talked about the Queen, her faith, and the role of Chaplain, that John briefly played. What made the death of this 96-year-old woman so profound for so many people?  This topic led to a broader discussion about the caring professions, and spiritual care as a crucial part of any wholistic approach to true health.   “... the way you learn how to be a decent person is by looking at decent people. And she always strikes me as a decent person that I have learned a lot from, even though … from a distance until relatively recently.”   --- Explore some of John Swinton's books:   Dementia: Living in the Memories of God.  A Graceful Embrace: Theological Reflections on Adopting Children  Finding Jesus in the Storm: The Spiritual Lives of Christians with Mental Health Challenges

So many children are battling to control their BIG emotions, and I am seeing so many parents struggling to help them. Many of those parents lucky enough to avail of the support services, are saying what is offered is not sufficient; and yet many families are not being offered support at all.   Kids are often labeled as badly behaved, where in actual fact the underlying reasons for this behavior are not being unearthed by the professionals.   In this episode, I talk with Avril about her experience of “the system”, and how this battle with her daughter's school and the authorities, which lasted many years, ended in a judicial review in favor of her fight for seeking recognition of her daughter's challenges. I hope that our discussion serves as a beacon of hope for many parents who are trying to seek the support that their child so desperately needs.   We also discuss Avril's role as an Ollie COach where she now supports families with similar issues.   All About Avril Avril is married with four grown-up children and a grandson who is 5. She worked as a Mental Health Nurse, but due to family commitments she became a “stay at home” mum and is now an “Ollie Coach”. Her youngest child, who is now 18, was very unhappy and extremely anxious from her first day at Primary School. She had many periods of refusing to attend school and had numerous suspensions for “bad behavior”. Avril made the decision to home school her to protect her mental health. Despite many requests for assessment and support, it was not until her daughter was 12 that a specialized assessment was carried out by a team from England. Her daughter received a diagnosis of “Asperger's with Demand Avoidance, in which she is extreme”. Avril's knowledge and experience as a Mental Health Nurse and as a mum to a child with additional needs attracted her to the Ollie Concept. She said, “It grasped me immediately as its core beliefs really resonated with me, especially “all behavior serves a purpose” and “there are no bad children”. It was exactly the type of therapy model that could have supported my daughter with her emotions and mental health, her siblings and us as a family.”   Avril qualified as the first Ollie Coach in Northern Ireland / Ireland in May 2019.   Avril can be contacted by Mobile: 07912390789 Email: avril.annett@ollieandhissuperpowers.com Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/olliecoachni LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/avrilannettolliecoachni Website: www.ollieandhissuperpowers.com General Information about Ollie Coaching The Ollie and His Super Powers Concept is about helping children, young people, and adults understand why we feel what we feel. The Super Powers are our emotions or feelings. At the heart of the Ollie, Concept is a passion for building the resilience and wellbeing of children and young people. Using a strengths-based approach, Ollie Coaching empowers children and young people to understand, manage and control their emotions rather than being controlled by them, it enables them to use the strengths and abilities that already exist inside them. They get to be in charge of their Super Powers, learning how to make an emotion bigger or smaller as needed. Ollie Coaches don't fix problems or tell you what you have to do. They empower you to problem solve for yourself and support you to find what you already have to inside you, helping you to be the best version of yourself that you can be. Ollie Coaching can offer support with anxiety, anger, fears and phobias, “challenging behaviors” and for issues around confidence and self-esteem, to name a few. ~~~~~ * Breathing Through BIG Emotions : For a limited time you can save £100 on my Online Course : Breathe Through Your Big Emotions
