On this weeks Talk a Good Game Fergal is joined by Meath Chronicle editor Gavan Becton to talk about all the weeks sports including the Meath ladies brilliant result over the weekend, former Meath manager Andy McEntee's new role as Antrim football manager, who's going to be the next Meath Football manager and plenty more to fill your boots.
In one of the most powerful, honest and explosive episodes of the GAA Social yet- Former Meath manager Andy McEntee explains what it's really like being an inter-county manager. There was an attempt to oust he former All-Ireland winning club coach in October 2021- but Andy survived and was backed ferociously by the clubs in Meath. This is his account of what happened, the trust that was lost, the abusive messages and letters received by him and his family and the hurt inflicted. It's not all bad- in the words of McEntee there were more good days and that's reflected in the letters that dropped through his front door, the relationships with the players and a gradual improvement of the team against a backdrop of the greatest team of all-time, Dublin. For the first time in an interview, Andy explains the impact of loss following the death of his brother Shane, Minister for Agriculture, who died by suicide in 2012. It's an emotional powerful story and shines a light on online abuse and the pressures of inter-county management. There are some brilliant moments of laughter and the positivity of Andy McEntee shines through. Brutally honest, funny and emotional and a focus on the All-Ireland football quarter-finals this weekend. Bad news for Armagh supporters, Oisin McConville believes they're going to win (so they'll lose) or will they? A brilliant podcast & massive respect to Andy McEntee for being so honest, especially talking about his brother Shane. A gent

Andy McEntee discusses the posthumous awarding of the Freedom of Galway to his mother Ena.
It was a bumper weekend for the GAA Championships, and OTB Sports has everything you need to look back on the action-packed weekend. Limerick got the weekend off to a great start when they booked a date against Kerry in the Munster Football Championship final, beating Tipperary on Saturday night. However, Saturday was all about Leinster hurling, as Kilkenny put up a massive performance to beat Dublin, while Westmeath earned an excellent draw against Wexford. The day was wrapped up when Galway thrashed Laois in the Leinster Hurling championship. Sunday was equally as action-packed, with Leinster and Ulster football taking centre stage, while the Munster Hurling Championship was as entertaining as ever. Dublin looked to be back to their best in their win over Meath, booking their place in the Leinster final against Kildare, who cruised to a victory over Westmeath earlier in the day. Derry were far too good for Monaghan, and booked their place against Donegal in the Ulster final. Finally, in Munster, Cork earned an unlikely win over Waterford to blow the hurling championship right open. Clare and Limerick followed up with a classic, as nothing could separate the two sides at the end of the match, both teams taking the draw. Here is all of the manager reaction, pundit analysis and more! [00:15] - Paul Murphy reacts to Cork's win over Waterford [10:39] - Cork manager Kieran Kingston [13:52] - Waterford manager Liam Cahill [16:56] - Paddy Andrews reacts to the Leinster semi-finals [26:56] - Westmeath manager Jack Cooney [32:22] - Kildare manager Glenn Ryan [38:41] - Dublin manager Dessie Farrell [42:09] - Meath manager Andy McEntee [44:52] - Billy Joe Padden reacts to the Ulster football semi-finals [57:37] - Derry's Rory Gallagher [1:00:22] - Derry's Gareth McKinless
As Dublin and Meath prepare to face each other in Sunday's Leinster semi-final, Meath boss Andy McEntee has previously suggested that splitting Dublin is something that has to be considered to counter the Dubs dominance in Leinster and the Football Championship in general. On this week's Throw-In with Philly McMahon, Philly and the Irish Independent's Conor McKeon, set out to counter the argument that says population size or finances have anything to do with the Dublin GAA's superiority over the last decade – despite what Colm Cooper has said about things reaching a tipping point. Join Philly McMahon on the Throw-In every Thursday where he gives his take on the Football Championship while every Monday the Irish Independent's team of sports writers and former players, including John Mullane, Eddie Brennan, Ciarán Whelan and Dick Clerkin bring you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. Dublin's woes continued in Tralee on Saturday night and Ciarán Whelan joined Will Slattery and Michael Verney on this week's Throw-In podcast to look back on all the weekend football action. “I really thought Dublin would have been set up with a little bit more structure defensively going into the game,” says Whelan. “And then particularly in that fifteen minute period where Kerry just ate them. There was no effort to stem the flow of that period and it just meant Kerry could control the game.” Meanwhile, elsewhere in Division 1, Armagh beat Tyrone as the All Ireland champions saw four players dismissed in a remarkable game; Donegal picked up their first win over Kildare; and Mayo overcame Monaghan. In Division 2, Andy McEntee's troubles continue with Meath's loss to Roscommon who are joint top with Galway and Derry. The hurling Leagues also began over the weekend with John Mullane joining the show and the biggest surprise of all coming from Wexford's three point win over Limerick, pointing to Limerick's one possible weakness in their squad depth. But, for Mullane, he reckons Waterford and Dublin are two counties to watch in this coming campaign. The Throw-In will have new episodes every Monday bringing you the best insights and analysis from all the weekend GAA action. Mayo's footballers are on two wins from two outings in their Allianz Division Two North campaign and this coming Sunday they put that 100% record on the line when they face fellow table-toppers Meath at MacHale Park. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we review last Saturday's win over Westmeath and we look ahead to the Meath game.Mayo News editor Mike Finnerty is back in the chair for this episode, where he's joined by Mayo News columnist Billy Joe Padden and Colm Keys of the Irish Independent. Billy Joe and Colm reflect back on Mayo's win over Westmeath and describe in fascinating detail how and why Paddy Durcan is not just one of Mayo's most important players but is also one of the best half-backs in the game. Colm explains why Paddy didn't win an All Star last year while he and Billy Joe also reflect on Cillian O'Connor's current form.Mike then catches up with Marty Clarke, whom he met last weekend at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh for the Down/Meath game, to hear his views about how the season is shaping up, what Down made of their opening round defeat to Mayo and his views on the return of spectators to matches in the North this weekend.Back with our panel, the lens is widened as Colm puts forward the case for why he thinks it will be a Dublin-Kerry All-Ireland final this year. He also brings us up to speed on when supporters across the island might be back at grounds watching games again and he outlines why the GAA needs to take action in relation to so many inter-county managers not releasing details of starting teams before games, or squad lists before competitions. Turning the focus towards this coming Sunday, Billy Joe and Colm - who is, of course, a Meath man and so is well positioned to provide plenty of background detail on Andy McEntee's side - set the scene ahead of Mayo's third round match against the Royals on Sunday, with a place in the Division Two semi-finals already assured for both teams. This episode of the Mayo News football podcast is now online and is available to listen to on iTunes, SoundCloud, Podomatic and Spotify. PODCAST "We needed to be a lot better than we were, we needed to be a lot more clinical in front of goals if we were going to give ourselves any chance of competing and that’s probably the department that let us down most today.” Meath manager Andy mcEntee was hugely disappointed following Sunday's Leinster SFC final drubbing by Dublin, but it shouldn't be all doom and gloom for the Royals as they produced a decent opening half and should a defensive resolve for close to an hiour against the greatest team ever to play the game before being eventually overwhelmed. The players put in a monumental shift, worked hard with little reward and apart from being blown out of the water in the final 15 minutes they didn't look out of place against the five-in-a-row chasing All-Ireland champions. On this week's Talk A Good Game we hear Andy McEntee's views on the game when he spoke to the assembled media afterwards, while reporter Jimmy Geoghegan also caught up with Graham Reilly and Ben Brennan. As Meat Loaf used to proclaim 'two out of three ain't bad' and despite the disappointment of the senior final there was joy in Croke Park for the Meath hurlers who claimed the Christy Ring Cup following a thriller against Down and the junior footballers who survived a late rally from Kildare to lift the Leinster JFC title. On this week's show we have exclusive chats with manager Nick Fitzgerald and players Adam Gannon and Sean Geraghty following the Ring Cup success. Also this week we look ahead to the start of the senior hurling championship, the Ladies Leinster IFC final and generally reflect on what was a bitter sweet weekend for Meath sports fans. So sit back, turn on and tune in to this week's edition of Talk A Good Game right here.
