Jim Vallely Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Sitting down with Emmy and WGA award winner, Jim Vallely was a cozy, comfortable, fun, and funny hang. He even told us a joke joke, on request. It's one he's been “testing” as part of a sociological experiment of sorts. Win/win, we got a laugh with a lesson. Who knew that having a seizure in 6th grade would lead to a career as a TV comedy writer. Jim takes us through and it makes perfect sense. This accountant studying student just happened to sit next to the right guy at an NYU audition, ask his mother the right question on the right day, marry the right girl, move into the right apartment, partner with the right actor/comedian, Jonathan Schmock, become 1/2 of The Funny Boys comedy team, appear on Johnny Carson, co-star on the sitcom, Double Trouble, and then write on The Golden Girls, one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. Brotherly Love, Ladies Man, Action, Two and a Half Men, My Wife and Kids, The John Larriquette Show, Till Death, Extended Family, as well as Arrested Development, for which he garnered 4 Emmy nominations, and the aforementioned awards, followed. Jim was an executive producer and co-creator with Will Arnett and Michael Hurwitz of Running Wilde on Fox. There's more. Jim tells a great Carl Reiner/Alan Brady story, tells us how the real Kramer, Larry David, Bill Maher, Callie Khouri, Chris Thompson, Don Reo, Mitchell Hurwitz, Will Arnett, and Jay Mohr factor into his story, gives us the before, during, and after of his career milestones, and speaks with great pride and tenderness about the great loves and joys of his life, his talented wife, Maggie, and his successful daughter, Tannis. We talked about our friends, Taylor Negron and Ron Zimmerman. There is no friend like Jim. His love, devotion, and care for Ron, was a gift he gave all of us who loved him. Jim's a tender-hearted, special man. And boy, is he funny. A very funny boy, indeed! Everything's Relative WAS a show. We're not joking—there's another failed sitcom with this title. This one was created by Mitchell Hurwitz, and spoiler, not much happens in it. Brynn, Aaron & Barry have a great time talking about this show, but more fun talking about Arrested Development. Plus Aaron misremembers/fabricates another memory like he did with the premise of the John Larroquette Show. Email: thatwasashow@aol.com (Because 90s AOL still exists for some reason!) In this episode we break down the pilot episode of Arrested Development, which was created by Mitchell Hurwitz, and premiered on November 2, 2003. Arrested Development aired for three seasons on Fox before its cancellation in 2006. Netflix revived the series for a fourth season in 2013, and a two-part fifth season in 2018 and 2019. Seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Hulu, and all five seasons are available to stream on Netflix. As always, we take a look at the Netflix description: “A son reluctantly tries to save the world’s craziest family from themselves. It’s a tough business being the normal one.” We’ll quickly find out that “normal” is relative. We also discuss the conception of the show, including how Ron Howard and Imagine Entertainment--along with creator and writer Mitchell Hurwitz--developed the idea for the show. Additionally, we take a look at the directing team behind the episode. Before they were worldwide sensations known for directing Avengers: Endgame--one of the highest-grossing movies of all time--Anthony and Joe Russo directed the pilot episode (as well as several other episodes) of Arrested Development. The Russo brothers also directed the pilot episodes of cult-favorite sitcoms Community and Happy Endings. In addition to our detailed breakdown of the episode, we conclude the podcast with a game: George Michael Bluth Quote or Lyric from a George Michael Song. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] When you think of smart and engaging television, good chances are that David Schwartz is behind the music of that show. David has scored series such as Northern Exposure, Arrested Development, The Good Place and is now scoring the final season of Veep. For this All Access we dive in with David to explore his background and his path to becoming a composer. David shares some incredibly fun stories about working on Northern Exposure and what his process is when approaching his writing. We talk about how David met Mitchell Hurwitz on The John Larroquette Show, and how that relationship was built over several other series before Mitchell had the opportunity to create Arrested Development and bring David onboard for that journey. We dissect The Good Place, and how David worked with creator Michael Schur who came from shows like The Office and Parks And Rec that used no score. Learn how Michael Schur learned to embrace music in a series and trust David. We tackle other topics as well such as writing a main theme, finding the write tone, what it feels like for a series you’re working on to get cancelled, and so much more! Jed York, Jason Bateman and Rob Lowe... Shortly after NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the Super Bowl L bid had been awarded to San Francisco, 49ers CEO Jed York dialed into "The Rich Eisen Podcast" to discuss the impact of the Super Bowl's golden anniversary being awarded to the city by the bay.  Up next, Rich dials up actor Jason Bateman to discuss "Arrested Development," which re-launches on Netflix on Sunday.  The show, which originally aired on FOX, was cancelled after just three seasons.  However, its cult-like fan base clamored for more and Bateman, along with the rest of his castmates obliged when writer and creator Mitchell Hurwitz came calling with a new script. The podcast wraps up with big-time Indianapolis fan Rob Lowe, who dials in to chat about his beloved Colts.  Lowe shares his thoughts on the Colts' 2013 draft class and if he thinks they can return to the playoffs this season.  The veteran actor also has a new project coming out this Sunday, "Behind The Candelabra," which details the life of Liberace (Michael Douglas) through the eyes of his much younger lover Scott Thorson (Matt Damon).  The movie is said to be the last of director Steven Soderbergh's long and illustrious career.  Be sure to tune in on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET  Enjoy, and as always, thanks for downloading! Here's the promised podcast interview with Mitch Hurwitz and Will Arnett. Hurwitz is the creator of "Arrested Development" and Fox's upcoming animated series "Sit Down, Shut Up" airing in April. Hurwitz also has a plethora of pilots that could be picked up this season including a remake of "Absolutely Fabulous." He has a lot of insight into the creative process and how things get done in the TV industry -- much of it funny after the fact (keep an ear out for his reference to "Dollhouse"). And yes, he talks about the "AD" movie. Fans of the comedic call-back (which "AD" was masterful at) take note: Hurwitz says there are still jokes and references they planted in the series that they want to revisit in the movie. As for Arnett, he was not only in "Arrested Development" but then succeeded in a variety of small roles on the big screen and a brilliant recurring cameo in "30 Rock." He's got a voice role in "Sit Down, Shut Up," plus a holding deal at Fox (possibly for a show that Hurwitz may helm). In the meantime, he showed up here and, well, listen to what happens.
