Pod Crashing episode 368 with Gabe Lenners from the podcast  OBSCURUM: ATTACK OF THE DRONES   OBSCURUM is a groundbreaking investigative podcast series launching in partnership with Imagine Entertainment, iHeartMedia and Lenners Entertainment this February. The brand explores an obscure side of rural America, where small-town mysteries, forgotten history and curiousity collide, and where the truth may lie in the unknown. With the recent media frenzy focused on mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, season one of this series, OBSCURUM: INVASION OF THE DRONES, takes listeners back to a unique origin story of this phenomenon. Episodes explore an eerily similar wave of drone sightings that gripped Nebraska and Colorado in late 2019, capitivating local communities but largely remaining untold-until now. Hosted by Gabe Lenners (Radio Disney, CMT, ABC News) and executive produced by legendary filmmakers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Kara Welker, Nathan Kloke and Lenners, OBSCURUM unpacks this mystery through the voices of locals who witnessed it firsthand, diving into the parallels between these earlier events and today's sightings. Just in time for spooky season, Jaclyn speaks to writer/producer David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Child's Play) about kindness in his life, his fascination with family & fantasy stories, and how the kindness of others propelled his career.David Kirschner's imagination has spawned a body of work that has evoked laughter, fear, suspense, and heartfelt emotion for over 40 years. It was 1975 when the legendary Neil Diamond laid eyes on 19-year-old David's illustrations. From here, David would photograph, and design twenty-two album covers, including the Grammy-nominated for design, The Jazz Singer. Soon after, David's talents were enlisted by famed creator, Jim Henson, for work on Sesame Street and The Muppets. Next, David harkened the voice of his creative entrepreneurial spirit, creating a fantasy garden world, Rose-Petal Place. Inspired by his daughters, Rose-Petal Place quickly blossomed into a book series, toys, apparel, television specials, and a float in the Macys Day Parade. This success brought David to the attention of Steven Spielberg. Backed by Steven's company, David created and produced the Oscar-nominated and two-time Grammy-winning, An American Tail, which spawned a theatrical sequel, and television series. It wouldn't be long before David struck again, but this time it was the fear of his sister's dolls that would soon become the horror icon, Chucky, in Child's Play. Chucky has prospered in 7 films, and the Chucky VT series is in its third year with an average score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. David ran Hanna Barbera Studios as President and Chairman for four years, where he led the resurgence of the venerable animation house. During his reign, David co-wrote and produced the two-time Emmy nominated live action, The Dreamer of Oz, with legendary writer, Richard Matheson, and produced the live-action feature The Flintstones. David's book, The Pagemaster was translated into fourteen languages around the world and became a film starring Macaulay Culkin. David produced for Disney, based on his story, the film Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2, Hocus Pocus 3 is in pre-production.His other projects include; Frailty, Cats Don't Dance, animated feature Titan A.E, Secondhand Lions, Miss Potter, and Martian Child, David also collaborated with Ron Howard to produce Curious George. He continues today as Executive Producer on the multi-Emmy-winning Curious George PBS daytime series. Ron Howard has been signed to direct a live-action Curious George, that David will produce with Imagine Entertainment. David has continued to honor his commitment to children and society with dedicated positions, Ambassador to The University of Southern California School of Cinema, Trustee of the Board of Crossroads School, Board of Directors for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Board Member of The Center for Early Education. This podcast is one of the many ways we live out our organization's mission to educate and inspire people to choose kindness. Today's guest is screenwriter and Hollywood script doctor Peter Douglas Russell. I wanted to go deep into the back alleys of what Hollywood script doctors actually do in the business. Peter's conversation was eye-opening, to say the least.Peter Russell sold two television pilots in 2017. He enjoys working on projects both as a ghostwriter and as a consultant.  And he can both write and teach what he knows. So many successful screenwriters and producers have no idea how to teach what they do, and so many teachers can't actually sell stories. But Peter does both. Peter was UCLA's Teacher of the Year in 2009. He invented (along with his then partner Cecilia Najar) a process called The Storymaker which you can use to quickly develop an original, complex, vivid story from a single idea — and the Storymaker is helping scores of his students shape wonderful stories.Peter started as a story analyst in the 1990s and has read over 6,000+ screenplays for major film and television giants including Imagine Entertainment, Participant Productions, HBO, CBS, Walden Entertainment and dozens of others. As he read these scripts, he started seeing deep, hidden patterns in the best stories. He wrote these down and started getting jobs FIXING writer's stories. He got good at it — really good.Peter was invited to teach at UCLA in 2004, and it became a passion, too.  He has now been invited to teach television pilot and film story creation at Pepperdine University's Seaver College Screenwriting MFA program, at Story Expo in LA and New York, and many others. Meanwhile, Peter has turned The Storymaker into the most powerful tool for helping storytellers create original vivid stories. Simply and quickly.Enjoy my conversation with Peter Douglas Russell.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Artificial Intelligence has developed at accelerated levels over the past few years. Since the introduction of Chat GBT, it has now become an everyday tool for all of us. We are either excited about the possibilities or frightened of them (or somewhere in between). Our guest on this episode is a best-selling author who has written about AI in his novels. Through his extensive research (and his military background) he has so much to share about our curious question.  Guest Info International bestselling author Jeffrey Wilson has at one time worked as an actor, a firefighter, a paramedic, a jet pilot, a diving instructor, a Naval Officer, and a Vascular and Trauma Surgeon. He is a U.S. Navy veteran who served more than fourteen years, with multiple deployments as a combat surgeon with Naval Special Warfare (SEALs) and a Joint Special Operations Task Force. He has served in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other places.  With fellow veteran Brian Andrews, they write, as Andrews and Wilson, multiple #1 bestselling thriller series including the TIER ONE series, the SONS OF VALOR series, the faith-based thriller series THE SHEPHERDS which has been optioned by Sony Affirm for Television, WEB Griffin's Presidential Agent Series, and now Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Sr. Series for Penguin beginning with ACT OF DEFIANCE coming May 2024 on the 40th anniversary of THE HUNT FOR THE RED OCTOBER. Other works include the speculative thrillers THE SANDBOX and the upcoming FOUR MINUTES.  Andrews and Wilson have now taken their storytelling to Hollywood, with more than a dozen of their stories optioned and in development for both television and Feature Film with major studios including Sony, MakeReady/Endeavor, Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment, Skydance, PictureStart, Walden, and the Cross Brothers who are adapting their wildly popular TIER ONE Series of books as a streaming television series. There is nothing more powerful than a story well told. Woven into the very fabric of what makes us human, story fuels connection. It fosters empathy. And it holds the power to impact not just the individual but humanity at large. Few understand this better than Brian Grazer—a man devoted to the idea that when curiosity and conversation combine, great art is made. One of Hollywood's most prolific film producers, Brian and his Imagine Entertainment partner Ron Howard are responsible for a litany of critically acclaimed, box-office hit films and television shows including Apollo 13, 8 Mile, Splash, Arrested Development, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, and many more. His productions have been honored with numerous awards including an astounding 10 Oscar wins, 50 Emmys, and 11 Golden Globes. Today we explore Brian's unique approach to storytelling, why he believes questions are more important than answers, and why curiosity has been the “superpower” that fueled his rise as one of Hollywood's leading producers and visionaries. Curiosity is so central to Brian's success in fact that he wrote a book about it entitled, A Curious Mind, which he has recently expanded upon in a newly released version. It was a thrill to sit down with a man that I deeply respect and admire. This conversation left me with a newfound appreciation of curiosity not only as an art form, but as a powerful driver of human happiness. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing WEDDING SEASON (2022) from Imagine Entertainment which is currently streaming on Netflix.  From writer, Shiwani Srivastava and director, Tom Dey, this is a cliched and predictable story that follows Asha (Pallavi Sharda) and Ravi (Suraj Sharma) as they come together and plot to pretend to be a couple and go through wedding season, to divert their parents' focus and pressure to find spouses and get married.  Obviously they fall in love along the way and have to overcome some manufactured drama in order to get to their own happily ever after.  The film clocks in at 1 h 38 m and is rated TV-PG.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Movie Synopsis: American Gangster is a 2007 American biographical crime film directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by Steven Zaillian. The film is fictionally based on the criminal career of Frank Lucas, a gangster from La Grange, North Carolina who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War, before being detained by a task force led by Newark Detective Richie Roberts. The film stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe with co-stars Ted Levine, John Ortiz, Josh Brolin, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ruby Dee, Lymari Nadal and Cuba Gooding Jr. Development for the film initially began in 2000, when Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment purchased the rights to a New York magazine story about the rise and fall of Lucas. Two years later, screenwriter Steven Zaillian introduced a 170-page scriptment to Scott. Original production plans were to commence in Toronto for budget purposes; however, production eventually relocated permanently to New York City. Because of the film's rising budget Universal canceled production in 2004. After negotiations with Terry George, it was later revived with Scott at the helm in March 2005. Principal photography commenced over a period of five months from July to December 2006; filming took place throughout New York City and concluded in Thailand.

The Classic Film: Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) "Six years after Michael Myers last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd, who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans” (IMDb.com). It happened. We've been mostly forgiving of the Halloween sequels, but 6—with its magic runes and nonsense plot—is absolutely the worst. • When I saw the internet come about, I thought, well, here's an opportunity, because everybody can have that 15 minutes of fame, right? Everybody has an opportunity. So I started... Yeah, so I started dreaming about creating this online TV, radio network, I kept trying to get people to create it, they just couldn't see it... It was the early days, everything was HTML code. And so I taught myself how to do HTML, how to do CSS, and how to do JavaScript, and all the coding, and then I created my own network. Instead of trying to find somebody else to do it, I built it myself. So there you go. She builds, I build my network.  (2:35)•  I was one of the very first Women in China to teach podcasting, and it was really bizarre because when I went over there, everything was in Mandarin, when I was trying to figure out the podcast platforms.... I'm going to stop you right there. Does HTML turn into Mandarin when you're in China? Is it all the same? No, it's different, and plus when you go onto the platforms, everything was in Mandarin, so I had to learn different words in Mandarin that would be related to what the podcast would be. So that way when I went through their platforms, I'd be able to go through and set it up. So I learned a little bit of Mandarin to create it.   (5:16)•   I was creating TV shows back then, that's what a cooking shows and health shows and things like that, and I actually was making deals with doctor's offices and they were going to stream my TV shows inside their doctor's offices for their patients to watch before they go into their appointments. It gave us a way that it went beyond the old way of doing broadcasting through these major networks, you can create these little networks and have your content streamed just anywhere. And it's even more so today. But from FMG network, I did podcasting, I created women in podcasting directory in 2005, so it was the first online directory for all women podcasters. Then I actually went in and started a podcast school. After the fire I kind of took everything down and went on hiatus to rebuild my life. I'm now in the process of re-emerging. I have a Radio, TV and Podcast Network, a podcast directory, the women in podcasting directory and I have a site called Podcast mingle, which is an online community where people can find guests for the podcast, so I have a lot of different things that are launching this fall. (10:19)•   The word no, when people have something that happens and they can't control it, you keep saying No. No. Like, it's going to stop it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it doesn't... And so we couldn't get in the next morning and then a friend of mine, she called and said you need to come over here and I can't leave, I can't leave. She said just come over here and just rest, she was such a sweetheart. So we went to her house, and then the next day we came back out and we were trying to... Kept trying to get in, they wouldn't let us in. I kept trying to call animal rescue, that was such a nightmare, the phones were down and you couldn't get a hold of anybody.  (15:49)•   It's kind of like separating yourself and it's like, alright, now I'm on this timeline that one's gone, and then instead of looking back and always trying to be what you were, it's almost like there's been this death of whatever Jody was before. Now, we have to kind of let go of that because we're never going to find that again, it's gone. And how do you move forward and just embrace that like this has happened, and this is me and this is my new life? With my journey with you and how much you've poured into me and helped me, I think in a small way when we've been through something like that, when we can look back on it with gratitude and be like, Okay, through that fire, all of these other beautiful things about myself have been formed and created, and I have gratitude. Are you at a place of gratitude yet?  Yeah, because one of the things that I've found about myself is I was constantly running and I was doing a lot of things, I would say yes to everybody, and I would do all these things previously where it wasn't always where my passion led me, and so now I'm grateful, I pay more attention to things I love, I'm conscious that life is a fleeting moment.
