TVC 661.4: Ed and guest co-host Chuck Harter welcome back actor, author, producer, director, screenwriter, and novelist Walter Koenig (Star Trek, Babylon 5). Walter's memoir Beaming Up and Getting Off: Life Before and Beyond Star Trek is a delightfully candid, often poignant, and very insightful read that walks you through his growing up years as the son of Russian immigrants in 1940s Manhattan; his formative years as an actor with the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York (where his classmates included Christopher Lloyd, Jessica Walter, Dabney Coleman, Brenda Vaccaro, Elizabeth Ashley, and James Caan); his lifelong love of theatre; and his deep appreciation for the many opportunities that Star Trek has given him. Beaming Up and Getting Off is available in hardcover and as an eBook through Jacobs Brown Media Group. Topics this segment include the through line between Walter's three appearances on Mr. Novak and how he was eventually cast as Chekhov on Star Trek in 1967. Learn more about your ad choices. Decoding UNDERCOVER GRANDPA In this episode, Dan and Tom decode the 2017 spy movie, UNDERCOVER GRANDPA. This is one of our episodes that has Dan and Tom disagreeing as to whether they thought it was a good movie or not. One of them thought it was ok. The other didn't like it at all. The basic plot involves a teenager named Jake Bouchard (Dylan Everett) who is smitten by a girl in his high school class. His Grandpa (James Caan) has a background in special operations and tells Jake about some of his missions. But Jake thought this was just crazy talk until his girlfriend Angie (Greta Onieogou) gets kidnapped. So, in this episode, we look at: The plot The cast The treatment/positioning of old people The plausibility of Grandpa's stories Could Grandpa really know Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame? The Pros and Cons of the Movie Aspic Other movies starring older actors Some tie-ins to other movies This movie has a star-studded cast of octogenarians, or near octogenarians, including James Caan, Louis Gossett Jr, Jessica Walter, Paul Sorvino, Lawrence Dane, and Kenneth Walsh. With this cast, and it being a spy movie, you can bet that the theme of the age of the characters is a main plot point. And, you would win that bet. Tell us what you think Have you seen UNDERCOVER GRANDPA? If not, has this episode encouraged you to watch it? If you have seen it, who's opinion do you agree with more: Dan's or Tom's? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and what you thought of this episode. Just drop us a note at info@spymovienavigator.com. The more we hear from you, the better the show will surely be! We'll give you a shout-out in a future episode! Welcome to “Not Couple Goals” where co-hosts Allie Nelson and Tyler McCarthy do a deep dive into a different ridiculous romantic thriller from the vantage point of their long-term relationship. Allie, a TV writer/producer and actress, has an affinity for romantic thrillers, the more salacious the better. Tyler, an entertainment reporter and critic, often finds himself drawn in despite his better judgment. Join them as they explore all the ways it's possible to love too hard… like WAY too hard. In this episode, they throw it back to an old classic from the early 2000s with “Swimfan” starring Erika Christensen, Jesse Bradford and Shiri Appleby. Join them as they do a deep dive (pun intended) into the psychology of Madison Bell and whether she's an apt successor to Glen Close in “Fatal Attraction” or Jessica Walter in “Play Misty For Me.” And, of course, discuss the young horny goblins they were when they first saw this movie back in the day. How would they have handled this stalker? Listen and find out. Special thanks to Mallory Johns for the introduction music. To see more of our hosts, check out Tyler's writing at USA Insider, SYFY and NBC Insider. Find Allie's work at Parade and Business Insider! We cordially invite you to celebrate Six Weeks of Holiday Horror here with us at The Gory Gays! First up, we have "Home For the Holidays" (1972) -- a made-for-TV gem starring Sally Field that we're pretty sure a lot of you have never even heard of; it was definitely a first time watch for us! And although Stanley mistook it for a Thanksgiving day movie (it's definitely Christmas), we still had a lot of fun with it -- what's not to love?! Bitchy middle-aged women, super thin eyebrows, a very drunk Jessica Walter, and a slicker-wearing murderess wandering around in a rainstorm over the holidays... We're in! Don't forget to rate us on Apple Podcasts, and if you'd like, drop us a comment. Happy Turkey Day to those who celebrate, and stay tuned to the end to see what ultra-offensive title we'll be trashing next week. Hint: it's another you've probably never heard of! Stay gory!Instagram/Twitter: @thegorygaysEmail: thegorygays@gmail.com
We all have thoughts that can be seemingly absurd or self-contradictory. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers reckon with their conflicting thoughts. Part 1: After surviving breast cancer, comedian Ophira Eisenberg hates the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon. Part 2: After the sudden death of his mom, Richard Kemeny feels numb to the world and his feelings. Ophira Eisenberg is a standup comic and host of NPR's nationally syndicated comedy, trivia show Ask Me Another where she interviews and plays silly games with Sir Patrick Stewart, Taye Diggs, Awkwafina, Roxane Gay, Terry Crews, Jessica Walter, Josh Groban, Nick Kroll, Tony Hawk, George Takei, Sasha Velour, Ethan Hawke, Julia Stiles, Lewis Black, Uzo Aduba, Michael C. Hall and more. She also is a regular host and teller with The Moth and her stories have been featured on The Moth Radio Hour and in their best-selling books, including the most recent: Occasional Magic: True Stories About Defying the Impossible. Ophira's own comedic memoir, Screw Everyone: Sleeping My Way to Monogamy was optioned for a feature film. She has appeared on Comedy Central, This Week At The Comedy Cellar, The New Yorker Festival, Kevin Hart's LOL Network, HBO's Girls, Gotham Live, The Late Late Show, The Today Show, and VH-1. Her comedy special Inside Joke is available on Amazon and iTunes. Richard Kemeny is a freelance science and travel writer based in London. His work has appeared in New Scientist, The Atlantic, Science, Hakai, the BBC and National Geographic. He used to produce The Economist's science and tech podcast, Babbage, and has reported from several countries for PRI's The World. He has received fellowships to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Marine Biological Laboratory, and used to work for a coral reef restoration foundation on the northern coast of Colombia. In his spare time he goes bouldering or thinks about cold water swimming. He is @rakemeny Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
If your audience isn't engaging with your posts, they're not opening your emails and your webinars are empty, it's time to tweak your marketing strategy.Your marketing strategy has become a pattern; a pattern your customers are used to. They know what's coming, so they tune it out. And the last thing you want to be is part of the noise. So we're going to show you how to pattern interrupt. According to a Mailchimp article, pattern interrupt is “a neuro linguistic programming (NLP) tactic used to disrupt a customer's usual thought process or behavior… [around] cold calls and other marketing and sales strategies to change how they think and feel.” In this episode, we're going to share how pattern interrupt is a key tool in re-engaging your customers as well as catching the attention of new potential customers. And we're learning about pattern interrupt from a show that does it so well: “Archer.”So in this episode, we're having a watch party of the Emmy Award-winning series "Archer" with Head of Content Marketing and Customer Education at Apollo.io, Josh Garrison. And we're chatting about how to engage your audience with pattern interruption, why you should spend time developing complex characters, and how to provide value by teaching your audience a new skill with each piece of content. So stick on a fake mustache and strap on your Omicron Spymaster watch for this episode of Remarkable.About Apollo.ioApollo.io combines a buyer database of over 250M contacts and powerful sales engagement and automation tools in one, easy to use platform. In the last year, they've grown ARR 3x, quadrupled their active users, and closed a $110M Series C led by Sequoia Capital in March of 2022. They continue to grow faster each month with record months of sales and added ARR.About ArcherArcher is an animated tv series parodying espionage culture about a James Bond-esque spy named Sterling Archer in a dysfunctional intelligence agency headed by his own mother. The show is set in a sort of Cold War era universe. The highly stylized animation is inspired by classic comic books. The animators describe the style as “puppety,” in that a limited amount of drawings are made, and then they put rotation points from which the drawings can move. The show was created by Adam Reed and made by Trinity Animation with the voice of Archer played by H. Jon Benjamin. It also includes the voices of Jessica Walter of Arrested Development, Aisha Tyler from Criminal Minds, and Chris Parnell from SNL. It originally aired in 2019 and is currently in its 14th season. It has won at least 3 Primetime Emmys among other numerous awards and nominations. About our guest, Josh GarrisonJosh Garrison is Head of Content Marketing and Customer Education at Apollo.io. He joined Apollo.io in December of 2022. Prior to his current role, he served as Head of Revenue at Teamflow. He has also held leadership roles at Autodesk and inDinero. He co-founded SpotMe Lending, an alternative to payday, auto title and pawnbroker loans, and Ledger Leaders, a bookkeeping and accounting services business. What B2B Companies Can Learn From “Archer”: Use pattern interrupt. Use a familiar interaction but pivot suddenly to catch your audience off-guard. Josh says that in “Archer”, “they do the thing where they set up a joke and then the punchline of the joke is a cut scene to someone else saying it.” It helps with pacing, and moving the story line along while making the audience laugh.Develop complex characters. Characters simply feel more like people when they have flaws, preferences, history… And building believable, relatable characters takes time, intention, and thought. The characters in Archer immediately feel lived in from the first episode. Josh says, “The first time you meet every character, you get the essence of that character. There's no wasted time there.” The characters are multi-dimensional, neither purely good or bad. They're human. Ian says that Archer “is the best spy in the world. But he's super narcissistic and he's pretty mean and self-serving. But there's this element of heart to him. Like he loves animals, he has a real affinity to certain people at his work. He's an a**hole, but he's our a**hole.” As a complex character, he's much more interesting and relatable than if he were simply a good person, good spy, good protagonist. So before you create content, spend time thinking about your characters' backstory, personality, motivations, and more, to flesh out a character that will resonate with your audience.Borrow from nostalgic content. The artwork of Archer is inspired by classic comics and 1960s superhero cartoons. The show borrows from James Bond and espionage culture. So the show has elements that feel very familiar while at the same time being quite modern. Josh says, “It's very unique, but it also feels familiar because they're calling back to things that you've seen and read throughout your early life.” So it draws people in with its nostalgic artwork but creates super fans with its modern tone, fast pacing, and cutting humor.Quotes*”Marketers are bored of our own playbooks. They're like, ‘Oh man, I'm doing another webinar.' Or they're like, ‘Oh, we gotta write another ebook?' Those are old ideas. But that doesn't mean that those things don't work anymore. When I explore pattern interruption, I'm still gonna run a webinar. But in that webinar, how can I subvert the expectation? How can I set people up to think they're gonna get one thing, and then give them something that's way more than they hoped or bargained for, and just go beyond?” - Josh Garrison*”Salespeople will engage with anything that will make them money. That's the guiding principle of our content marketing strategy. Put yourself in the shoes of a salesperson and ask yourself, ‘Would I read this? Before I commit to reading it or watching it, am I convinced based on the headline or the title or the description, that this is gonna bring enough value to me to help me improve my ability to make money?' So we start there. That's actually a pretty high bar. It's really hard to do. It means that you can't make any fluff, because fluff doesn't make anybody money.” - Josh Garrison*“What we try to do is go two steps further than [typical content,] and it's like, ‘I'm gonna open up Apollo. I'm gonna show you exactly what to do.' Something that's so actionable that by the time somebody finishes engaging with a piece of content, whether it's a video, webinar, or article, they have gained a new skill.” - Josh GarrisonTime Stamps[0:58] Introducing Head of Content Marketing & Customer Education at Apollo.io Josh Garrison[1:59] Why are we covering Archer?[3:13] What makes Archer remarkable? Tread Perilously finally delivers the long-promised month of crossovers, starting with the Magnum P.I./Murder, She Wrote event -- "Novel Connection" & "Magnum on Ice." When Robin Masters' latest house guests appear to be marked for assassination, Higgins does everything in his power to dissuade Magnum from digging into the case. As it happens, Masters' agent has brought in help of her own: Jessica Fletcher. And while Magnum keeps saying he doesn't want the case and Jessica maintains she is no investigator, the pair end up looking into the problem once Magnum stands accused of murdering a local he insists is the contract killer hired to kill one of the guests. Erik and Justin plot a "Crisis of Infinite Podcasts." They also take another look at both Magnum and Murder, She Wrote as different types of detective shows. Higgins' absolute fascination with Jessica proves to be the crossover's greatest asset -- and that's considering the presence of Jessica Walter in the guest cast! The strange ending of the Magnum episode leads Erik to suspect a "safety" conclusion was filmed for syndication. The mystery of Robin Masters is once again explored. Wolverine proves to be a bad man. Tom Selleck's leading man quality is appraised and Ronny Cox leads the "untrustworthy screen presence" chart.

Following the success of the Incredible Hulk television show that began airing in 1977, American networks tried to find another Marvel superhero who could captivate the viewers at home. Among their selected candidates was Doctor Strange, a heroic wizard whose comics had attracted a cult audience of children, fantasy nerds, and collegiate stoners ever since he was created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee in 1963. CBS commissioned Philip DeGuere to direct a film that would serve as a pilot for a potential series; exploitation film regular Peter Hooten was cast as Doctor Strange while Jessica Walter, who'd later attain wider fame for her performances in Arrested Development and Archer, played the vampy antagonist. Alas, the TV movie was greeted with nasty reviews and miserable ratings (it was set up against the miniseries Roots, which did not help its chances). Ryan is joined by Cheryl for a closer look at this campy relic of a very specific time and place. Discussion topics include the film's minor innovations, its curious decision to remove Doctor Strange's core character arc, and how it approached the source material's appropriative roots. Because he couldn't help himself, Ryan also delves into the various other attempts to make a Doctor Strange film until Marvel Studios finally managed to produce one in 2016. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ryan-valentine3/support

Back in 1978 the Doctor Strange pilot aired and was intended to spin off another Marvel based tv show, like the Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man. But CBS didn't pick it up and this pilot was left to gather dust. Directed by Philip DeGuere Jr. and starring Peter Hooten, Clyde Kusatsu, Jessica Walter, Anne-Marie Martin, Philip Sterling and John Mills. Plot Thomas Lindmer (Sir John Mills), a world-weary sorcerer, foresees the return to Earth of his ancient adversary Morgan LeFey (Jessica Walter), who has been granted dominance over men's souls by The Nameless One (David Hooks). In order to combat her evil magic, Lindmer must pass the Guardianship of the Light onto a young psychiatry-resident, Dr. Stephen Strange (Peter Hooten), who has no inkling of his destiny. www.twitter.com/comicsinmotionp comicsinmotionpodcast@gmail.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/support
This Episode Lewis and Branden are joined by friend and film buff Zach to talk about Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me (1971). For this episode we tried a new way to record; watching the film together and then immediately pressing record to talk about it, so we had no time to research. We talk about Eastwood's career, his status as a sex symbol (which carries to this day… apparently) and the great Jessica Walter. We hope you enjoy the show and return in the future to the congregation!
Two dramatic thrillers, two strong leading lady performances, two disturbing tales of affairs gone wrong: Clint Eastwood's Play Misty for Me and Adrian Lyne's Fatal Attraction! Get the usual helping of behind-the-scenes facts and stories, find out if Jessica Walter or Glenn Close topped the poll, and not one, but TWO return trivia winners!
