With Halloween as my inspiration this month, I'm sharing with you the theme of Financial Horror Stories. I want to be clear that we're utilizing this titling in a very tongue-in-cheek manner. First of all, I don't think any financial story is of the horror variety, but I've worked with clients long enough to know that after a string of unfortunate financial occurrences, it's quite easy to feel as though you're starring in your very own Financial Horror Movie.  This month I'm going to share with you some of those stories where our clients have felt as though they were in some scary situations and how they worked their way out of them. Spoiler alert, they all make it out alive.  Joining me today is Whitney. She built a successful business only to want to walk away from it all and in the process, her financial choices added in a scary way until the point she couldn't avoid them any longer.   For more information, visit the show notes at https://www.martinisandyourmoney.com/show-notes/episode442

Many of us struggle with habits that aren't serving us. Today, Julianne chats with Whitney Catalano to discuss one in particular: Binge eating.   Whitney is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who helps people heal their relationship with food, make peace with their body, and take the power back from their inner bully. Her mission is to help others stop wasting their time and energy on diets that don't work, and instead to take charge of their lives and create space for the things that truly matter.   Whitney's work was largely inspired by her own experience with body image and disordered eating. In today's episode, she shares about where bad habits like binge eating stem from, and how to reduce stress and get back to a place of autonomous decision making.   What you'll get out of this episode: The inside scoop on how Whitney's clients, after working with her, go from guilt, shame, and self-doubt to saying, “I feel more in control than I ever have, but I'm not controlling anything.”   Moments: 14:05 - Whitney's story and how she got to where she is today 22:03 - Binging as a means of control 26:20 - Why we hold on to habits and how they become coping mechanisms 30:05 - Whitney shares helpful advice for breaking free of old coping mechanisms resurfacing 38:35 - A sneak peak of Whitney's new book! 41:48 - Final thoughts on food as a healthy tool   Quotes:   “When people realize that binging is just a coping mechanism, that it's a message from the body that it needs some attention around something, they're able to treat themselves with more compassion and self love. They're able to use that information to feel safer and heal some of the things that drive the unconscious binge eating.”   “When we develop new coping mechanisms and actually learn how to deal with and process our emotions, that's when you get the freedom.”   Want to connect with Whitney? Whitney Catalano is a Registered Dietitian specializing in intuitive eating for driven and passionate women who are ready to reclaim their life by breaking up with dieting. She adopts an anti-diet view and stresses connecting with your body’s food preferences, hunger and fullness cues, and finding a weight that is effortless for your body. In this episode we discuss: How social trends around body image set us up for a bad relationship with food, how these things can be passed down from parents to kids. Kids are sponges, and if they see their parents engaging with food in a negative way they will likely develop the same negative food mindsets. The restriction vs binging pendulum. If you are struggling with binge eating , it may be because you tried to over restricted yourself in the past and vice versa. Body size is not necessarily an indicator of self control or laziness. Biases todays body size and how bigger people are shamed from multiple different areas of life , most notably healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, etc) The inner bully - being a bully to yourself / shaming yourself when you make a bad food decision, the importance of recognizing these thoughts exist, and not always taking them as gospel. WHITNEY CATALANO: WHEN YOU INVEST SO MUCH YOU EITHER HAVE TO MAKE IT WORK OR YOU'RE OUT OF BUSINESS...FROM REGISTERED DIETICIAN TO FOOD FREEDOM COACH Today, I have a friend and mastermind buddy with me, Whitney Catalano. Whitney is a food freedom dietitian & mindset coach helping people break free from emotional binge eating, heal their relationship with their bodies and make peace with their inner bullies so they can fully step into their power.  Whitney and I met earlier this year at a mastermind retreat we're both a part of and we connected over our similar beliefs around money that we felt were getting in the way of our true success. I'm so excited because we really dive into the topic of investing in yourself, how we spend money and what money means to us on this episode.  We dig deep into Whitney's story, her background with her own eating disorders and how she's overcome them to get where she is today. She's now operating a thriving coaching business - but it didn't start out that way. Her first year she really struggled and made a lot of investments, making her feel like she was in over her head. Honestly, a lot like I felt last year as well. Hers and my journeys have a lot in common though she's 5 years younger and way more empowered than I was at 25. I really enjoyed talking to Whitney about how she found clarity in her coaching business, how she overcame the stigma around coaching so she could thrive, and how she went from struggling to crazy abundant in her business (hint it's not from more content and more strategy).  I think you'll love how relatable she is, there's truly something for everyone in this episode! Aha Moment How Whitney overcame the stigma of being a coach How she found clarity for what she was meant to do after her business felt like it was all over the place How she opened the floodgates of abundance The 2 big shifts Whitney experienced to go from struggling to consistent clients Learning to switch things up or pivot if things get heavy or feel really hard How to finally feel ok with No's and rejection through this simple mindset shift What investing has meant to Whitney and how it's been a way for her to give herself permission to play bigger Her #1 piece of advice for anyone who's starting out or struggling with their new coaching business Links Check out Whitney's Website: https://whitneycatalano.com/ Trust Your Body Project Podcast: Trust Your Body Project Whitney's Instagram: @trustyourbodyproject Ali's Instagram: @punchdrunksoul Resources Mentioned in the Episode: Millionaire Messenger by Brendan Burchard

This episode's Dear Food letter: Dear Food,    I hate you.    I think about you every second of every day, and I think of all the things I’ve lost and can’t get back because of the power I’ve given you.    Growing up, I was always bigger. Actually, the biggest. The bigger sister, the bigger cousin, the big friend. I was a quiet, sensitive, and curious little girl, always the observer. I also had a difficult home life, which was the best kept secret in town. My dad was a volatile alcoholic, which led to a great deal of anxiety, fear, and chaos, and a mother who was in too much pain to really be there for us girls. I compensated for all of these things by attempting perfection in almost every other part of my life.    Straight A’s through high school, studied abroad for a year, president of the international club. I wasn’t much of an athlete, but it wasn’t because I didn’t like sports. It’s the classic big girl dilemma – they’ll judge me if I don’t, they’ll laugh at me if I do. Instead, I was a musician. Principal cellist of five different ensembles, and the only high school cellist in the college symphony. But it always came back to my size, and no matter what I achieved I felt like losing weight was the only thing that would make me belong or be truly loved.   The busy schedule I designed for myself meant that I didn’t “have time” for food most days. Really, what I had was a rock-solid alibi for my absence in the school cafeteria. I had tried everything under the sun before I had even reached junior year. Skipping meals, eating frozen grapes because they took longer to eat than regular grapes (logic where???), you name it. To my perpetual shock and devastation, nothing worked.    When I was a senior in high school, I was on a diet and my family knew about it. It was probably not a safe, healthy diet, but I was overweight so they encouraged the behavior. My dad, especially. He was big his whole life, and had just dropped a significant amount of weight.    This particular night, I had been at school since 7:30 AM, and didn’t get home from college orchestra practice until close to 9:30. I was exhausted, and, quite literally, starving. I grabbed a can of Lite Progresso Soup for dinner. My dad made a condescending remark, something to the effect of “You should be careful, that has a lot of sodium in it.”    I completely shut down. I put the soup back in the cupboard, and walked upstairs unable to speak or look anyone in the eye. Once I got to my room, I started to sob. I remember hearing my mom say something like, “What’s wrong with you?” to my dad.    As I write this, I’m in one of the deepest holes I’ve ever experienced with my binge eating. I feel like I'm on a runaway train, except I'm the driver and I can't get it together enough to take the wheel (don't think trains have steering wheels, but you get it). I haven’t been able to shake this memory for a few weeks, and I can’t exactly articulate why but I know this was an impactful moment in my life, and there were others like it. I know my dad came to talk to me after, but I don’t remember what he said because it didn’t matter. He couldn’t unring the bell, in my mind. I don’t remember if they were able to get me to eat that night, but I remember feeling the emotional pain overcome the hunger pains, and I couldn’t stomach the thought of eating.    I’m 25 now, and I can feel that I’m in a nosedive, and I feel absolutely powerless. I’ve gained 20 pounds in the last year, and my preoccupation with food and my eating disorder is negatively affecting my job, my social life, and my health. I eat to soothe my psychological pain, but my psychological pain stems from my inability to control my eating. My eating disorder is definitely at the wheel right now, and I don’t know how to take back control. I don’t even feel that I’m strong enough.    From,    Runaway Train Show Notes: 6 Keys To Food Peace™️ blog post The Body Image Workbook by Thomas Cash The Trust Your Body Project podcastand Instagram Diet Binge Cycle Pendulum video WhitneyCatalano.com Julie Dillon RD blog Link to subscribe to the Love Food’s Food Peace Syllabus.
