Lovecraft, Cthulhumytologin, Cthulhu vaknar, Modernista, Arthur Isfelt, Nyarlathotep, The Colour Out of Space, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Shadow over Innsmouth, At the Mountains of Madness, Laird Barron, Mysterium Tremendum, Occultation and other Stories, Necronomicon, The Black Guide, Old Leech-mytologin, John Carpenter, The Thing, body horror, Alien, In the Mouth of Madness, Event Horizon, Paul W.S. Anderson, rymdskräck, The Mist, Frank Darabont, Stephen King-mys, Annihilation, Alex Garland, Jeff VanderMeer och science fiction. Patreons erhåller även en något fördjupad analys av ytterligare fyra relevanta filmer.

On this episode Matt is joined by Visionary Artist, Charlie Potesky. Charlie is currently based in Denver, though he recently moved from Austin, where he and Matt met at several events. Charlie creates immersive, colorful, and psychedelic paintings inspired by his experiences with plant medicines like cannabis, mushrooms and DMT (The Spirit Molecule). Additionally he paints stunningly accurate portraits of comedians and icons from psychedelic culture, both past and current, like Terence McKenna, Mike Tyson, Duncan Trussell and many more. During the podcast we learn about how Charlie began creating art, and why he prefers paint on canvas over creating images digitally. The two then riff on trippy and mind-stimulating topics like simulation theory, infinite consciousness, remote viewing, dreams, archetypes, the great mystery of existence and beyond. This conversation goes pretty deep down the rabbit hole. Please enjoy the episode, and as always, thank you for listening. Why would anyone take a leap of faith? What is proper worship? Haywood Glover discusses why one should always question their beliefs and not fall blindly into following a particular religion or person. We talk about the flaws in religious zealotry that comes forth from a lack of intellectual scrutiny. We also discussed the racial and political divisiveness in Christianity and the self-righteous blind spots it can foster. Why would a logical naturally skeptical, risk-averse person choose faith? Notes: "One Day It'll All Make Sense" by Common "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah" by Richard Bach "The five lifestyles or values that Ecclesiastes tries are precisely the five tried in all ages and cultures, from ancient Hinduism's 'Four Wants of Man' through Augustine's Confessions to modern existentialist novels like Sartre's La Nausee and Hesse's Siddhartha." - "You Can Understand the Bible" by Peter Kreeft "In a Pit with Lion on a Snowy Day" by Mark Batterson Why fear God? German theologian and philosopher Rudolf Otto describes it as the "Mysterium Tremendum et Tascinans" - a mystery before which humanity both trembles and is fascinated is both repelled and attracted.
We continue our exploration of Dr. Sjostedt-Hughes "Modes of Sentience" in this episode. We tackle substance vs process (and try our best to help all you dogmatic materialists out there see the "light of process"), admit to being bamboozled and explore a potential solution via psychedelic experience. Pepper in a little, mythology, the World Tree and Shamanism and there you have it. Enjoy :)

When Otto published the idea of the Holy during World War One it was a sensation, soon translated into multiple languages. He coined the term numinous to describe the experience of the Other. Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans

Pastor Jon preaches on the presence of God, getting closer to God and how important it is that everyone should be striving to get closer to God and figure out how to do that in their own personal walks with Christ. The Lord is a Mystery that he wants us all to learn, to hunger and thirst and chase after Him and He will gladly show us who He is.....if we would just seek Him.
When Laird Barron first announced Blood Standard as his first straight crime novel I was excited that an author known for cosmic horror and dread was giving his talents to a project like this. He was a 2007 and 2010 Shirley Jackson Award winner for his collections The Imago Sequence and Other Stories and Occultation and Other Stories. "Mysterium Tremendum" won a 2010 Shirley Jackson Award for best novella. He is also a 2009 nominee for his novelette "Catch Hell" Other award nominations include the Crawford Award, Sturgeon Award, International Horror Guild Award, World Fantasy Award, Bram Stoker Award, and the Locus Award. The Isiah Coleridge novels are weird crime classics, the titles are Blood Standard, Black Mountain, and Worse Angels. The majority of our conversation is focused on these books with a bit of Samurai movie talk. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

In this mind meld, Colin and I recount the climax and finale of our Ayahuasca adventure at Blue Morpho. We pick up right where we left off-- Colin had just experienced the most punishing night of his life, while I did a psychic bungee jump into the depths of hell, but eventually rebounded into a transcendent trance that left me eager for more mind adventures. What happens next? How does Colin pull out of his hell realm? How do we make sense of all of this madness and grace? You'll have to listen to find out. Get ready for a deep dive episode into the imagery and themes used by Cloverfield (2008) and how they evoke and comment on imagery from 9/11 and terrorism more generally. Cloverfield was a pretty big deal back in 2008 and we make sure to talk about the critical reception then and discuss some great scholarly articles that have been produced since then. If you want to talk more about the themes and imagery contained in this movie, or any horror movie for that matter, head on over to the Horror Pod Class Facebook group and click to join. To let you know up front, we are discussing two academic papers: "Terrorist Attack!: The Spectacle of Evil in the Blended Horror of Cloverfield" by James Aston of Liverpool Hope University "Cloverfield’s Monstrosity: Ideology and Terror" by Steen Christiansen of Aalborg University. This one hosted on Academia.edu, but signup up is free! Show Notes: 2:35- Tyler is watching and enjoying the Handmaid's Tale, even though it can be brutal to watch. Head on over to Signal Horizon and check out Tyler's reviews and recaps of the show. 3:35- Did you know that the original novel of the Handmaid's Tale is available on Kindle Unlimited? It is free to sign up and it also has some pretty awesome horror- click here to see some of the awesome books that make Kindle Unlimited worth it for genre fiction fans. 4:30- Big shout-out to Raygun's, a local Kansas City T-Shirt shop and their Gilead line! 5:30- Mike is reading Blood Standard by Laird Barron. It is awesome and you ought to pre-order a copy over on Amazon! 8:00- Speaking of Laird Barron, one of his novellas Mysterium Tremendum is on Pseudopod and it is read by the very talented Jon Padgett. This story is a three-parter, but you can check out part one right here. 20:00- First up is "Cloverfield’s Monstrosity: Ideology and Terror" by Steen Christiansen of Aalborg University. This is a super interesting look at how we construct ideologies and their associated images. 33:15- We talk briefly about the other Cloverfield movies, 10 Cloverfield Lane and the Cloverfield Paradox. For more about these two movies you can read this really interesting article on Junkee about how 10 Cloverfield Lane continues the War on Terror motif of the first film and also check out Tracy's take on the Cloverfield Paradox. 33:45- "Terrorist Attack!: The Spectacle of Evil in the Blended Horror of Cloverfield" by James Aston of Liverpool Hope University This paper is super neat because James Aston argues that the movie at least tries to offer a critique on our collective responses to terrorism. 37:00- The view that Cloverfield reflected some of the imagery from 9/11 is not just held by a small group of scholars and humble podcasters, in fact it was widely discussed at the time. You can read this Salon article from 2008 that pretty well sums up the sentiment. 40:30- A really powerful documentary about 9/11 and the images associated with it is 9/11: The Falling Man. 48:00- Click here to read more about Philip Fracassi's novella, Shiloh. 48:30- Read more on Wikipedia about the unreleased 1972 Jerry Lewis film, The Day the Clown Cried. Tyler also talks about Scaramouche Jones, a one person play with a similar theme. Read more about Scaramouche Jones over at The Telegraph. 59:00- Here is the article on Junkee about how 10 Cloverfield Lane continues the War on Terror motif of the first film. We hope you enjoyed today's episode! Don't forget to hit up the Horror Pod Class Facebook group, let us know what you think of the podcast and what films, books, and topics you think we should discuss next. You can follow Mike on Goodreads and Tyler on Twitter. Make sure you also check out Signal Horizon for the latest horror news, reviews, and analysis. Until then, class dismissed!
