Astrophiz 215: Dr Ian Musgrave's June SkyGuide Summary: Mars close to thin crescent moon. Occultation of Antares behind the moon in the early evening sky. The moon comes close to some of the bright planets. … and Mars is close to the moon again at the end of the month. Moon Phases: June 3 ~ 1st Quarter Moon, and another time to catch the ‘Lunar X' late in the night, about 11pm for Australian Eastern states. 10:30 for central states and 9pm in the West. Lunar X Tip: take an image each 1/2 hour from moonrise. June 7 ~ Apogee, furthest from earth June 11 ~ Full Moon June 19 ~ Last Quarter Moon ~ ideal for stargazing June 23 ~ Perigee, closest to earth June 25 ~ New Moon ~ ideal for stargazing June 21 ~ Solstice: shortest day in Southern Hemisphere. longest day in Northern Hemisphere Evening Skies: Jupiter is lost into the twilight Mercury returns to evening skies mid-month, on the 27th it's 3°from the moon an hour after sunset, and will continue to be excellent until mid-July. Mars is low in the NW evening skies, and is still readily visible T Coronae Borealis is visible in late evening skies and still has not ‘Gone Nova' so the challenge is still … to capture a Nova before and after it blows! This Nova iswell ‘overdue' so all eyes are on it! Tuesday 10 June ~ The Occultation of Antares by the Moon is easily seen in binoculars and telescopes (for times, check Ian's Astroblogger website) Also June is a great opportunity to see The Dark Emu in the south, the Southern Cross and the magnificent globular cluster Omega Centauri is also at it's highest in the south. Morning Skies: Venus is furthest from the sun on 1 June, and is a half-moon shape in telescopes, and beside the crescent moon on 22 June Saturn is climbing higher in the morning sky, Scorpius is a feature in the dark morning sky in the east Saggitarius and the Heart of the Milky Way are also rising, a good opportunity to catch the Triffid and Lagoon nebulas in Saggitarius. Ian's 'Tangent' Ian discusses long-lived aspects of Indigenous astronomy like The Eagle, Stingray and Dark Emu, and how Western constellation names have changed over time. eg Argo was declared obsolete in 1930. Ian's Astrophotography Challenges: 1. Capture The Occultation of Antares on June 10th (almost full moon) 2. Then on a dark night with no moon, have a go at The Dark Emu, with your mobile phone/DSLR/camera, conveniently at 8pm in the south near Scorpius, the Pointers and the Southern Cross. Tips: Use your device's highest ISO (ASA) Under urban skies, take 10 x1second exposures, and stack them using a free stacking program or app. Under dark skies, you can take longer exposures If stacking in RAW, do a ‘dark frame' subtraction If stacking in JPEG, don't use dark frame subtraction.
Wiladat 12th Imam Mahdi (ATFS)Friday, February 14th 2025- The occultation is divided into two phases: the Minor Occultation (Ghaybah al-Sughra) and the Major Occultation (Ghaybah al-Kubra).- During the Minor Occultation, Imam Mahdi maintained communication with his followers through deputies.- In the Major Occultation, the Imam's communication is hidden, and followers are guided through religious scholars and community leadership.- The concept of the Mahdi's occultation challenges believers to remain steadfast in their faith despite the Imam's absence.- The absence of Imam Mahdi is viewed as a test of patience and spiritual perseverance.- Islamic eschatology places great emphasis on the Mahdi as a central figure who will restore justice and righteousness.- Some Sunni scholars also have traditions referring to a Mahdi figure, though with differences in the details compared to Shia beliefs.- The Mahdi's return is expected to coincide with a time of widespread injustice, oppression, and corruption, followed by a time of peace and equity.- Followers of the Imam Mahdi are encouraged to live in anticipation of his return, maintaining hope and working towards societal justice in the interim.- The Mahdi's occultation is seen as part of the broader divine plan, with a purpose that is ultimately tied to fulfilling God's will for the world. - Imam Mahdi's return will mark a dramatic transformation of the world order, bringing about the reign of truth and equity for all.Donate towards our programs today: https://jaffari.org/donate/Jaffari Community Centre (JCC Live)

Hi everybody, I'm Rob Webb, your Last Minute Astronomer, bringing astronomy to normies and nerds, with little time to spare. We'll start by talking about January's big events, then highlight the naked eye planets, and finish up with the lunar phases, so you can plan ahead better than me. January 2025 is a PLANETARY month! Mars gets big, Mars gets occulted, Mars gets outshined by Venus, Saturn, and Jupiter, then Venus and Saturn pass right by each other, and a brief but intense meteor shower shows up. 13th - Occultation of Mars - MORE than a close encounter, Mars will be right next to the Moon all night, except for about an hour when the Moon occults Mars. Around Philadelphia, the occultation starts at 9:17pm, when the Moon passes right in front of Mars. This lasts until about 10:32pm, when Mars pops back out on the other side of the Moon. Music was produced by Deep Sky Dude and used with permission. We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. I'm Chris and joining me is Shane. We are amateur astronomers who love looking up at the night sky and this podcast is for everyone who enjoys going out under the stars. - Oct 1 - Zodiacal light is visible again this month. Actually, Alister and I observed it back on Sept. 8th, so it does become visible even in late summer. Look towards East or just north of east and it's a pyramid shaped pillar of light pointing somewhat towards M45, the Pleiades star cluster. - Oct 2 - New Moon! Also an annular solar eclipse on this day…but only for extreme southern tip of South America and center of Pacific…let us know if you see this! - Oct 5 - Venus as close as 3° to the Moon in Evening Sky - Oct 10 - First Quarter Moon - Oct 14th - Saturn Pairs as close as 0.1° of Moon and Occultation for parts of Africa…so if anyone is there…hint hint…we have a friend visiting Africa for astronomy who will join us in coming weeks. - Oct 15th - Neptune just over ½° from the Moon and occultation for other regions including Africa. - Oct 17 - Full Moon - Largest in 2024 - I don't know if it's super or not…large tides this week too. - Oct 19 - Moon Near Pleiades this evening -Oct 20/21 - Orionid meteors peak but Moon interferes but it pairs with Jupiter for a nice sight, as close as 0.6° - Oct 24th - Last Quarter Moon Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas - Best night here will be Oct 15th when it passes Messier 5, a Globular Star Cluster in Serpens. Comet is forecast to be at Mag. 3 that night! We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. Join us in our first head-to-head discussion with the respected Shaykh, Imran Damani in which we explore the depths of the Philosophy of Ghayba (Occultation). We discuss a number of points relating to the wisdom, aims, and objectives of the Occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (as) as well as pondering on how we can prepare for his return and to be from the successful supporters of the Imam.
Dr Ian Musgrave brings us his September SkyGuide … telling us when, where and what to look for in the evening and morning skies this month. As usual Ian also gives us his ‘Tangent' ... this time al about Full Moons, Apogee moons and Perigee moons, and how an astrologer made a typo leading to how our understanding of 'Blue Moons' has been somewhat flawed Also Ian is continuing his ‘Astrophotography Challenge' where he presents us with not one, but a trio of achievable and challenging tasks to undertake with our cameras in September. This month our challenge is to capture a Comet, a Nova and capturing a perigee and apogee moon with the same zoom settings, and an occultation. Moon Phases for September New Moon - 3 September - best for seeing the faint fuzzies and clusters Apogee Moon furthest from Earth - 6 September 1st Quarter Moon - 11 September Full Moon - 18 September Perigee Full Moon is also closest to Earth -18 September Last Quarter Moon - 25 September Evening Sky Venus in the evening twilight, close to thin crescent moon on the 5th, and close to Spica on the 18th. Saturn - almost edge on in the late evening, and for those in Northern Australia north of Alice Springs, an occultation on 17 September at about 6:20 in the evening .... and the centre of our galaxy is directly overhead this month, so when the sky is very dark this week (New Moon) and around to 25th (last quarter moon), please do get out and have a look at our magnificent Milky Way! Morning Sky Mercury has returned, low in the morning sky. Saturn rising ... always beautiful! Mars is moving into Gemini, and Jupiter getting higher also prominent in the morning sky, and may be joined by Comet C/2023A3 later on in the month, Comet C/2023A3 is closest to the sun on September 27, in the early morning if it doesn't disintegrate, but comets are like cats ... "they have tails and do as the please" Corona Borealis still hasn't banged, but is still expected to pop off before the end of September. Occultation of Antares best from Perth 10-11 September Ian's September Astrophotography Challenges: 1. Capture the apogee and perigee with same zoom. 2. Capture the comet oround the 13th or 14th, 3. Occultation 4. Corona Borealis Nova explosion Next Episode: In 2 weeks, to celebrate our 200th episode, we are bringing you a sensational interview with Larissa Palethorpe, a young PhD from Edinburgh University who has discovered the most earth-like planet yet … and it's only 40 Light years away You'll love Larissa and her earth-shattering research. Keep looking up!
Legal and normative discourse has been integral to the fabric of Shīʿism since its inception. Revered across nearly all schools of Islam, the sixth Shīʿī Imām, Imām Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad al-Ṣādiq (d. 765), stands as a paragon of juridical scholarship. The legal doctrines elucidated by Imām Jaʿfar and his immediate successors have purportedly been meticulously preserved by eminent figures such as al-Kulaynī (d. 941), Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān (d. 974), al-Ṣudūq (d. 991), and al-Ṭūsī (d. 1067) within their respective ḥadīth collections. These compendia collectively form a coherent corpus of legalistic discourse, distinctively associated with the Jaʿfarī school of thought. Within this corpus, a specific legal persona of the Imām is presupposed, wherein the linguistic formulation of legal pronouncements is contingent upon the recipient, while the underlying legal principles remain immutable and accessible solely to the Imām. Numerous traditions assert that God has conferred upon the Imām the authority of legal guardianship (al-wilāyah al-tashrīʿiya), enabling them to legislate per divine knowledge, thus allowing flexibility in expressing their legal rulings through various linguistic forms. The embodiment of this principle becomes evident when the Imām issues divergent rulings on the same matter due to specific circumstances, illustrating the dynamic nature of legal language. By recognizing the parallels between legal guardianship and other prevalent Jaʿfarī themes such as dissimulation (taqiyya) and intellectual accommodation (kalām ʿalā qadr ʿuqūl al-nās), one can argue that the aforementioned Shīʿī corpus posits a perspective on legal principles and legal language that is characterized by realism yet subject-dependency. Within this framework, the Imām not only receives legal principles but also interprets and applies them, emphasising the nuanced interplay between linguistic expression and the application of legal principles. Due to this, the Imām embodies a ‘proto-Uṣūlī' role, applying consistent principles but issuing varied judgments based on circumstances, akin to a 'legal demiurge' endowed with divine authority. This meta-ethical stance, akin to ‘Platonic Moral Realism', underscores the constancy of principles amidst changing moral judgments. Such a view significantly impacts the legal language used by the Imām, with specific rulings tailored for ‘common' followers and general principles revealed to legally ‘qualified' ones. The rejection of analogical reasoning (qiyās), attributed to the Imām, is also rooted in the belief that only he holds the necessary knowledge for accurate interpretation, ensuring clarity in legal meaning. Viewing the Imām as a ‘Divine Jurist' reveals disparities in Jaʿfarī legal thought before and after the Occultation, shedding light on evolving synthetic legal trends amongst later Twelver communities. This perspective highlights Imāms' distinct stance on the relationship between legal language and meaning, affirming the adaptability of the former and the permanence of the latter.

On December 11 (or 12 depending on timezone), Betelgeuse will be occulted for approximately 12 seconds. This is significant. Betelgeuse is a gateway, an information point, and one of the more powerful stars in our system. Once heralded as a star representing the powerful feminine aspects of Creator, during the Orion wars (and due to their mirror on Earth), powerful Betelgeuse got taken over. The broadcasts were disrupted and people who were using this gate for soul crossing had pieces of their souls abducted. In this podcast, I tell you about the journey we have been on with Betelgeuse, its significance as a stargate, when it got taken over and why this occultation is a good thing. *A reminder I am back on for sessions! SpaceX is counting down to a second test launch for the Super Heavy. The White House is laying out rules for governing space tourism and space stations owned by private companies. And asteroid will soon occult Betelgeuse. Mars is glowing green?
Students and teachers are doing real science by measuring the shadows cast by distant objects in our solar system. For years humans knew Pluto, the first Trans-Neptunian object to be discovered, only as a moving point of light in the night sky. It wasn't until 58 years after it's discovery that astronomers were able to observe a star as Pluto passed in front of it. These data gave an accurate diameter and also proved that Pluto has an atmosphere. There are estimated to be 100,000 Trans-Neptunian bodies larger than 60 miles or so in diameter. They have stories to tell about the beginning of the solar system. Additionally, sometimes, a passing star changes one of their orbits sending it into the inner solar system and perhaps near to us.

In 874 CE, the eleventh Imam died, and the Imami community splintered. The institutions of the Imamate were maintained by the dead Imam's agents, who asserted they were in contact with a hidden twelfth Imam. This was the beginning of 'Twelver' Shiʿism. In Agents of the Hidden Imam: Forging Twelver Shi‘ism, 850-950 CE (Cambridge UP, 2022), Edmund Hayes provides an innovative approach to exploring early Shiʿism, moving beyond doctrinal history to provide an analysis of the socio-political processes leading to the canonisation of the Occultation of the twelfth Imam. Hayes shows how these agents cemented their authority by reproducing the physical signs of the Imamate, including protocols of succession, letters and the alm taxes. Four of these agents were ultimately canonised as “envoys” but traces of earlier conceptions of authority remain embedded in the earliest reports. Hayes dissects the complex and contradictory Occultation narratives to show how, amidst the claims of numerous actors, the institutional positioning of the envoys allowed them to assert a quasi-Imamic authority in the absence of an Imam. “Information occultation…?” If you've never heard of it, neither had we. But chances are, you're actually quite familiar with when things become more complicated than is necessary. Whether writing hard-to-follow code, making UI that's overly difficult to understand, or taking part in the “Rockstar Developer” mentality, it's not uncommon for developers to know these kinds of work practices all too well. But, using the advice & wisdom of Nx DevTools & Nx Cloud Core Team Member, Jo Hanna Pearce, we can work to keep things clean, simple, & understandable from both a code and human perspective. In this episode of Chthonica, we talk about the adapting horror prose to film with Laird Barron and Alan Baxter, and screenwriter & filmmaker Philip Gelatt, Jr. who has adapted stories from both authors. Philip wrote and directed the film THEY REMAIN, based on Laird's novella "--30--" and scripted "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" from the story by Alan Baxter for the Netflix animated series Love, Death & Robots. Philip also wrote, directed and produced the dark fantasy animated film THE SPINE OF NIGHT, now streaming on Shudder and available on Blu-Ray through Amazon. Spoiler alert: we will talk about details of both stories and their screen adaptations. You can find "--30--" in Laird Barron's collection OCCULTATION and "In Vaulted Halls Entombed" in Alan Baxter's collection SERVED COLD.

In this weeks message Pastor Peter talks to us about Overcoming Occultism. The word Occult or Occultation is an event that occurs when one object is hidden by another object that passes between it and the observer.Occultism spiritually speaking is when something blocks the view of or presents itself in the place of Christ, who is the Saviour of the world and is the Truth, it tries to shift your view or tries to shift your understanding of what is right and replace it with error.

What might clouds on other planets, even planets outside our own solar system, look like? Alexandria Johnson, Assistant Professor of Practice and Research in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University discusses the process of analyzing a few pixels of light, detected by telescopes, in order to study cloud formation on exoplanets. With a focus on sub-Neptune planets that could reach temperatures near 500K in their upper atmosphere, scientists believe there are clouds formed both from potassium chloride and zinc sulfide. On planets described as Hot Jupiters, which are thousands of degrees Kelvin in their upper atmospheres, there could be titanium oxide clouds and it may even rain rubies!

When Laird Barron first announced Blood Standard as his first straight crime novel I was excited that an author known for cosmic horror and dread was giving his talents to a project like this. He was a 2007 and 2010 Shirley Jackson Award winner for his collections The Imago Sequence and Other Stories and Occultation and Other Stories. "Mysterium Tremendum" won a 2010 Shirley Jackson Award for best novella. He is also a 2009 nominee for his novelette "Catch Hell" Other award nominations include the Crawford Award, Sturgeon Award, International Horror Guild Award, World Fantasy Award, Bram Stoker Award, and the Locus Award. The Isiah Coleridge novels are weird crime classics, the titles are Blood Standard, Black Mountain, and Worse Angels. The majority of our conversation is focused on these books with a bit of Samurai movie talk. •You can find my books here: Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/

Aaron and Hansel Kern are owners along with Sue and Rebecca Kern, of Kern Family Farm. The multi-generational farm is located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. In this episode, you’ll hear about their passion for community and conservation; trials with no-till and cover cropping; and the transition to the next generation. The farm is certified organic and they use regenerative farming practices. The Kerns are dedicated to re-cultivating connections between the people and the land in which their food and lives depend upon. They are focused on education, working with apprentices and WWOOFers. The Kerns also operate a grocery store to help provide healthy food to their local community.Roles are changing on this multi-generational farm. Aaron talks about his knowing about wanting to be a farmer from a very early age, and Hansel discusses his "gently relinquishing management to Aaron."The Kerns are big believers in cover cropping; working for 20 years toward getting their organic matter up. Hansel gives credit to the next generation for moving away from mechanical spader, going no-till, and having their organic matter grew even more.Aaron Kern is participating in a Western SARE funded project, Effects of Occultation on Weed Pressure, Labor Costs, Product Quality, and Yield in Sustainable Vegetable Production in Northern California.Note: this podcast was recorded prior to the impacts on agriculture due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In a follow up, Aaron told us that the farm has gone through changes and stresses. However, the community is really supporting local foods with a renewed interest. Their farm store sales have greatly increased, off-setting the loss of restaurant and farmers market sales. People are reaching out to them for advise on starting gardens and even buying plants from them out of their newfound interest in growing their own food. The interns that live on farm are constantly expressing gratitude to be sheltered in place on a farm in nature. The challenge is keeping everyone, especially those in the high-risk category, safe and healthy. Learn more about Western SARE: westernsare.org

John shares some of the knowledge from his book and experience on his homestead to help you determine what are beneficial weeds in the right area of your garden. Listen in to learn about using weeds as an understory to benefit plants, designing your growing space to minimize weeds, when to utilize their benefits, or how to safely remove them. If you've ever seen a weed in your yard, this is an episode for you! Don't miss an episode! Click here to sign up for podcast updatesor visit www.urbanfarm.org/podcast John does not consider himself a typical farmer. Farming and homesteading were not something he ever planned to do. Growing up, he enjoyed a varied diet of video games, cartoons, and processed foods. Dental decay, seasonal allergies, and constant sickness were the inevitable result – one that doctors denied was connected to food and lifestyle choices. In his early 20s, he was waylaid by duodenal ulcers, his body's warning that some things were dreadfully awry. Over the course of a year, he and his now wife Jessica completely changed their understanding of food, asking – what is food? How should it be raised? and How should it be prepared? This eventually led to moving out to a farm of their own, and writing several books including The Frugal Homesteader Handbook, The Elderberry Book, and Winning the War Against Weeds. Occultation vs. Solarization Occultation basically means blocking something from view. For example, when studying Astronomy, when we experience an eclipse and the moon is blocked from the sun that is occultation. There are two forms of silage tarps that are used for solarization and occultation in the garden. For solarization, the clear tarps heat up the soil and are used if you want to sterilize your soil due to either nematode, fungal, or bacterial pressures in the vegetable garden. For occultation, the black tarps are used for maintaining soil structure, organic matter, and promote bacterial activity in the garden soil. Using Occultation in the Garden Soil On this week's episode, the guys explain how occultation is used in the garden. When we block the garden soil from the sunlight this known as occultation. To use this technique in the garden we take Silage Tarps to cover the soil area. The main purpose of occultation with the black tarp is you create this moist environment that starts weed germination but they end up dying off as soon as the germinate because there's no life to feed off of. This method is perfect for creating a stale weed seedbed or weed seed bank. The occultation is used to prepare your soil without using any kind gas-powered equipment such as a tiller, tractor, or harrow. So if you want to start a new garden area, but have no form of gas-powered equipment, add this Silage Tarp to that area. It works great when laid down for three to four weeks in the summertime or maybe up to six weeks in the wintertime. Then, just pull it up and go to planting vegetables in the garden area. Travis recommends to mow it down as low as you could then apply the silage tarp. If you are like Greg and have a longer existing garden spot that has high weed pressure these Silage tarps work great to suppress this weed seed bank. Another great benefit of Silage Tarps is it maintains the integrity of the garden soil. With the tendency of overworking our soils, this tarp method allows us to not overwork which maintains the proper tilth that we need to have for a successful vegetable garden. Show and Tell Segment On the show and tell segment, Greg has a Tubtrug colander full of Jambalaya and some stragglers of Red Burgundy Okra. Both productive okra varieties, but Jambalaya is top-notch when it comes to maximum production in the vegetable garden. Travis brought some of Greg's favorite Brown Turkey Figs. He also has a Stonewall cucumber that was harvested off his Hortonova Trellis Netting. Growing on a trellis allows for higher yields and more growing space because vegetables are growing vertically in the garden. The guys also show off the different color Hoss Hats that we carry in Charcoal, Red, and Camo. Viewer Questions Segment On the question and answer segment this week, the guys answer questions about what they learned from this growing season that they wouldn't like to do again and squash bug pressures during the Fall. Although they had a good garden season due to the dry weather they both found one thing that they learned to not do in the garden again. For Greg, he prefers not to grow southern peas in the garden again. He did well growing the peas, but he cannot control the Southern pea curculio. Travis agrees that he can't grow them as well. During late Fall and September, the squash bug pressures are probably the highest during the Fall months. Travis says to avoid even trying to grow any kind cucurbit vegetables during those months. The guys recommend planting any kind of cucurbits early in the garden to avoid those harsh squash bug pressures. Product of the Week Silage Tarp https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1F_bihSw-g
Class is back and this time we are discussing the 2013 found footage film Mr. Jones and what it has to tell us about Guerrilla, Street, and Outsider Art. We talk a whole bunch about how much we liked this movie, even though the overall reception can be described as "mixed" at best. Plus we sing! And play the drums! Show notes and useful links: 1:00- Tyler talks a bit about the "Arrive Alive" presentation at his school. For more about Arrive Alive, check out their website. 1:30- Many airports need volunteers to be injured victims during their annual emergency exercises. Often times they will make you up in some pretty horrific makeup! Check out Kansas City International's call for volunteers here or Google your local airport if you are interested. 3:50- Tyler is currently reading Year's Best Body Horror 2017 edited by C.P. Dunphey. If you are interested in the body horror sub-genre, we totally recommend it. Click here for our Amazon affiliate link and pick up a copy today. 4:20- Tyler watched Mom and Dad recently, you can check out his review and learn more about Nick Cage going full Cage here. 6:45- Tyler and Mike both loved the new novella by Philip Fracassi entitled "Shiloh" and the additional bonus story "Soda Jerk." Click here to see their full review of Shiloh. 9:50- For more podcasts covering your favorite fiction genres, check out the Shockwaves podcast by Blumhouse. 10:30- Mike recommends some free horror fiction over at Pseudopod with their really cool original "Alarm Will Sound." 12:00- Class starts! Spoilers ahead for Mr. Jones (2013). Also, we really apologize for our terrible singing. 17:30- Trailer for Mr. Jones, you can watch the full version over at YouTube. 20:00- Tyler tells us all about Apotropaic Magic, which is pretty darn interesting. Learn more over at Wikipedia. 23:45- No discussion of street and guerrilla art would be complete without a discussion of Banksy. Check out the trailer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary about Banksy and try to get a hold of the movie. It is really well done. 25:00- Mike discusses an interview that was published on Daily Dead where Mr. Jones writer and director Karl Mueller indicated that one of his inspirations was Henry Darger. 30:15- Likely the coolest and most mysterious guerrilla/outsider art out there are the Toynbee Tiles. You can watch an entire documentary about them here for free. 36:00- Check out more artwork from Pumpkinrot on their website. Not only is Pumpkinrot responsible for the super cool scarecrows in Mr. Jones, but also some of the work in Krampus. 37:30- Awesome Huck Magazine article about Apotropaic magic in Bulgaria and the super cool costumes that people wear to ward off evil spirits. 48:00- For similar works, check out the Laird Barron short story "Strappado." We recommend just going whole hog down the Laird Barron rabbit hole by purchasing his book Occultation.

I really like doing it with more regularity. I think that works, works pretty well for us. But it's been fun trying to put a few more podcasts together and a few episodes that are longer and like so we're trying to still play with like the, the format of how long these podcast should be, I guess if anyone out there is listening, and they have some input on, on how long of an episode they've enjoyed, or you know, how much time the format should really be. The Occultation Of Aldebaran Viewing the Andromeda galaxy, The occultation of aldebaran, Mercury rising at dawn. Produced by Marina Hansen and Billy Newman. billynewmanphoto.com Hello, and thank you for listening to this episode of the night sky podcast for the third week of January 2016. This week, I'm joined with Marina Hanson once again to talk about some of this week's star and skywatching news and events that are coming up. And when in DC, I do Marina, hey, Billy, I'm doing well. Cool. I'm glad that you're here today, again, with me to talk about some of the cool stuff that's coming up. I think it's been a couple, it's kind of a slow, it's a slow period right now, in January, in this midsection of January, and then it's gonna start picking up a lot at the end of January. And then I think if we get good viewing, at least in the northwest here, I think it's really going to ramp up for us through February and March. And then really, almost all of April, May, June, and all through the summer have a lot of different events going on that are kind of interesting. skywatching things that we'll be able to keep track of. But I think it's a little bit of a law right now. Yeah, I'm excited for the things coming up in the next few months. Yeah, right now it is pretty slow. Well, you know, I can't say it's slow. And then I could say that. I mean, there's like four planets visible. And they AM. Yeah, that's really cool. I guess of the fifth one. Yeah, even as I think it's just a law because there's gonna be a fifth one soon. So that's when like hyack comes in. That's when the news is the headline. Yeah, the four planets being visible is really cool. Yeah. So right now and the aim and we've been kind of observing this. The last couple nights, we've had a couple clear nights in the breaks of all these El Nino storms that keep sweeping through the West Coast. We got a couple clear nights during the last week separated by about five or six days. But I think the first night we got to see that observation, I think was what the ninth where Saturn and Venus were like just a half a degree apart from each other in the morning sky. They were just right up next to each other. That was really cool. Do you remember that? It was like, maybe we can half ago. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, really cool to see. And then that was like, that's in Scorpio is now in a Helio conjunction in the morning sky. So Helio, I think a Helio conjunction. And this, this might be the wrong use of the term. But what was explained in the way that things were written about, I think this is astrologically Helio conjunctions are the first constellation that rises above the sun in the morning sky. So it'd be the last constellation to rise above the horizon before the sun comes up. Does that make sense? First, the first constellation you see at first light, right? That's the Helio conjunction sign. So that's what some astrological systems, or some calendar systems would use, as their position to identify the constellation in character at that time. So you know how some people maybe complain sometimes that Sagittarius the month that Sagittarius occupies the sun is not the month that the Zodiac identifies for your birthday. Right. And so the reason for this disparity sometimes culturally, was because it was identified through a Helio conjunction of that constellation instead of the other type of conjunct, I think just a regular conjunction, or when when the sun is absolutely in that constellation. So in this in this thinking, it's the sun is now passed, that constellation is now probably in another constellation. But it's that constellation that we see at first light, when the sun just starts to come up. That's the one that I think they would count sometimes. Now that doesn't really even break down or make things make a lot more sense. astrologically. But for us for astronomy, I think it's just kind of interestin

The Comic Book Bears had an unplanned summertime hibernation but we can't think of a better reason to get us up and moving within our cave than to welcome Thom Collins to the show for the first time! Thom is the creative force behind Occultation, a three part graphic novel series that explores a distant dystopian future and what happens when the religious, right-wing fundamentalists take power. The central character, Ellis Becker, is a 6’7″, 340lbs gay man who works as an "extractor" - a highly trained specialist who’s purpose is to extract people, art, literature and anything of value to the human race, without detection. Thom takes us through how he came to develop the universe that Ellis, his teammates and his adversaries inhabit, his creative process in crafting the very distinctive look of the series, his influences and much, much more! Occultation II was the first book in the series released and was the subject of a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign. A campaign to fund Occultation III is under way right now! After the interview, Bill Z and Steve reconvene to talk about what they have been up to, what their missing co-hosts Bryan and Justin are up to, their experiences at HeroesCon and Garden State Comic Fest and then they head to the spinner rack for reading of books both new (Mage: The Hero Denied; the Batman/Elmer Fudd and Legion of Super-Heroes/Bugs Bunny crossover specials) and old (Common Grounds, Ex Machina) and much more! Beyond Boston Prophecy - Christian Based Prophetic/Talk Podcast
03-05-16 - False Prophet or Anti-Christ - the Islamic Mahdi In Islamic eschatology, the Mahdi (Arabic: مهدي, ISO 233: mahdī "guided one") is the prophesied redeemer of Islam who will rule for seven, nine, or nineteen years (according to differing interpretations)[1] before the Day of Judgment (yawm al-qiyamah / literally, the Day of Resurrection)[2] and will rid the world of evil.[3] There is no explicit reference to the Mahdi in the Qu'ran, but references to him are found in hadith (the reports and traditions of Muhammad's teachings collected after his death). According to Islamic tradition, the Mahdi's tenure will coincide with the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Isa), who is to assist the Mahdi against the Masih ad-Dajjal (literally, the "false Messiah" or Antichrist).[4] Differences exist in the concept of the Mahdi between Shia Muslims and adherents of the Sunni tradition. For Sunnis, the Mahdi is Muhammad's successor who is yet to come. For most Shia Muslims, the Mahdi was born but disappeared and will remain hidden from humanity until he reappears to bring justice to the world, a doctrine known as the Occultation. For Twelver Shia, this "hidden Imam" is Muhammad al-Mahdi, the Twelfth Imam. The term mahdi does not occur in the Quran, but it is derived from the Arabic root h-d-y, commonly used to mean "divine guidance". The term al-Mahdi was employed from the beginning of Islam, but only as an honorific epithet and without any messianic significance.[5] As an honorific it has been used in some instances to describe Muhammad (by Hassan ibn Thabit), as well as Abraham, al-Hussain, and various Umayyad rulers (hudāt mahdiyyūn).[5] During the second civil war (680-692), after the death of Muʾawiya, the term acquired a new meaning of a ruler who would restore Islam to its perfect form and restore justice after oppression.[5] The Mahdi became synonymous with the "Hidden Imam" who was thought to be in occultation awaiting the time that God has ordered for his return. This return is envisaged as occurring shortly before the final Day of judgment.[3] In fact, the concept of the "hidden Imam" was attributed to several Imams in turn.[8] The Sunnis view the Mahdi as the successor of Muhammad, but, unlike most Shia Muslims, do not believe the Mahdi has already been born.[11] The Mahdi is expected to arrive to rule the world and to reestablish righteousness.[6]
Story: “Blood and Stardust” by Laird Barron Three years later, as I hike my skirt to urinate in a dark alley in the slums of Kolkata, my arms are grasped from behind. The Doctor whispers, “So, we meet again.” His face was ruined in the explosion — its severe, patrician mold is melted and crudely reformed as if an idiot child had gotten his or her stubby fingers on God’s modeling clay. I can’t see it from my disadvantaged perspective, but that’s not necessary. I’ve been following him and Pelt around since our original falling out. Speaking of the Devil… Pelt slips from the shadows and drives his favorite dirk, first through my belly, then, after he smirks at the blood splattering onto our shoes, my heart. He grins as he twists the blade like he’s winding a watch. “— and this time the advantage is mine.” I laugh with pure malice, and die. In today's How On Earth we have two features: Distributed Energy (start time 5:46): Enjoying the twinkling stars without nighttime light pollution is a luxury for many of us. We can flick on the switch when we return home, after all. But think what would it be like if you were among the 1.5 billion people around the world who lack to centralized electricity. Having no lights at night keeps many of them poor and illiterate, and it can create a public health and national security crisis. How On Earth co-host Susan Moran interviews two experts in the field of distributed and decentralized energy. Rachel Kleinfeld is co-author (along with Drew Sloan) of a new book called “Let There Be Light: Electrifying the Developing World with Markets and Distributed Energy.” She is CEO of the Truman National Security Project. Stephen Katsaros is founder of Nokero, a Denver-based startup company that makes solar LED light bulbs. Pluto's Occultation (start time 16:31): It is a good time these days for watching solar system. Last week there was a solar eclipse, next week is a lunar eclipse and a transit of Venus (where Venus can be seen moving across the disk of the Sun). Next week there is yet another solar system event of one object moving in front of another, though it's not visible without the aid of a telescope. On June 4th Pluto will pass in front of a relatively bright star, an "occultation" event that will send teams of astronomers scrambling around the world to observe. One team member is How on Earth's own Joel Parker, an astrophysicist with the Boulder office of the Southwest Research Institute. He'll be deployed to an observatory in New Zealand to observe the occultation. Joel talks with How On Earth co-host Tom McKinnon on the eve of his adventure about the occultation and why scientists are interested in observing it. (Here's an article and video about last year's occulting Pluto. Hosts: Tom McKinnon, Susan Moran Engineer: Jim Pullen Producer: Susan Moran Executive Producer: Joel Parker Listen to the show:
