Lovecraft, Cthulhumytologin, Cthulhu vaknar, Modernista, Arthur Isfelt, Nyarlathotep, The Colour Out of Space, The Whisperer in Darkness, The Shadow over Innsmouth, At the Mountains of Madness, Laird Barron, Mysterium Tremendum, Occultation and other Stories, Necronomicon, The Black Guide, Old Leech-mytologin, John Carpenter, The Thing, body horror, Alien, In the Mouth of Madness, Event Horizon, Paul W.S. In a triumphant finale to season 1 of Vayse, Hine and Buckley talk to one of their favourite mega-brains of the paraweirdpodosphere, Sequoyah Kennedy of the Nonsense Bazaar podcast. The conversation wanders into some favourite topics of the Nonsense Bazaar including Saint Germaine, To the Stars and the Lavenda agenda and then deep into more personal matters such as Sequoyah's self-guided magical practice, his encounters with supernatural beings and his love of freaky modular synths... (recorded 19 July 2023) Thanks to Keith for the show notes which have, again, gone above and beyond the call of duty! This Saturday we're returning to the world of Lovecraft in episode 80, The Curse. Based on the classic story The Colour Out of Space, this picture tells the tale of a struggling family farm that is rocked when a strange object from space lands in a field one night. What at first seems like a godsend quickly turns into a living nightmare. To pair with this, we found Look Into the Air Hazy Pale Ale with Nelson Sauvin hops, which @luabrewing was kind enough to provide. The Hounds of Tindalos by Frank Belknap Long Frank Belknap  Long was born in 1901 in Harlem, New York (not the Netherlands) and died in 1992 aged 92 in Manhattan. He was a horror and science fiction writer and is most famous for his contribution to the stories of the Cthulhu Mythos. The Cthulhu Mythos begins with H P Lovecraft, but many other authors have contributed towards the corpus of stories that the faithful call ‘The Canon'.   It was his 1921 story The Eye Above The Mantel that caught Lovecraft's eye. That story was a pastiche of Edgar Allan Poe and I have elsewhere commented on that histrionic overblown prose that contains many screaming crazy dudes and occult blasphemous horrors which is found first and best in Poe, then Lovecraft and here in this lovely story. Frank and Howard maintained a long correspondence. Lovecraft was famous for his lengthy and multiple pen friendships as he sat shut up and nervous in his room. He became a mentor to Frank.  Frank contributed to the pulp magazines The Hounds of TindalosChalmers. Prefers illuminated manuscripts to adding machines and leering stone gargoyles to automobiles. Who doesn't?  He has a long nose and slightly receding chin. His bookcase has medieval pamphlets about sorcery, witchcraft and black magic (surely triple tautology)  but again, what's not normal in any of this? Although I think that Frank is setting it up for the norms so they get the idea that Chalmers is a bit weird.  He has the same name as the Australian Philosopher David Chalmers who famously came up with the term ‘the hard problem' to describe how in a materialist way of thinking, matter can give rise to subjective experience. It's as hard a problem as how cows make lollipops. We simply can't figure either of them out. So, Frank is using ‘modern science' in the guise of Einstein to undermine the self-confident materialists, particularly regarding time. He throws this is in like spice. He lets us know that Einstein is relative: we each have our own versions.   Our interlocutor is our avatar. Think how hard it would be to write a story with one character? You need two to bring out the exposition. Anyway, on we go, getting more and more theatrical with each sentence.  But this idea about curves and angles seems original and it is quite weird. Like Lovecraft's Colour Out of Space, an abstract idea like a colour or an angle can be jarringly weird. Weird is all about juxtapositions that should not be, and taking things out of context because they are juxtaposed with other, odd contents. It sort of reminded me of H G Wells' The Time Machine particularly the 1950s film version.  The Hounds of Tindalos was the first Cthulhu story written by anyone else than Lovecraft and we have references to Dholes and the Elder Races. Other than that, there is no clear connection, unless a Mythos buff can correct me. The Hounds of Tindalos are not actual dogs in this story. Other Mythos writers like Ramsey Campbell, Lin Carter, Brian Lumley and Peter Cannon reference the Hounds.  The the name Tindalos sounds Greek and there are references ‘The Greeks had a name for them, ‘ I don't think Tindalos means anything. The name Halpin is one I have only come across before in the work of Ambrose Bierce The Death of Halpin Frayser . Perhaps it is a common name in America, but I've heard in speech here.  20lb of plaster of Paris seems a lot. Despite the plaster of Paris smoothing out the corners of the room (I should have liked to have seen that), the Hounds find a way in by causing an earthquake which causes the plaster to fall and thus angles are created… A hopeless maniac. I could tell you about those.    With the later excerpts from the news and the story of his neighbour who'd gone to let his cat in, I wondered if there wasn't humour here?  The superintendent on finding the body walks to the open window and stares for five minutes

Bradbury was one of the best-known writers of our time. He was a master storyteller, a champion of creative freedom, and a space-age visionary. His most noteworthy works include The Martian Chronicles, Farenheit 451, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. In 2008, a digitized copy of The Martian Chronicles reached the Red Planet in 2008, aboard NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander. Bradbury’s remarks on the subject were: “The thing that makes me happy is that I know that on Mars, two hundred years from now, my books are going to be read. They’ll be up on dead Mars with no atmosphere. And late at night, with a flashlight, some little boy is going to peek under the covers and read The Martian Chronicles on Mars.” And now, Rocket Summer, by Ray Bradbury Tap here to go to www.classictalesaudiobooks.com and become a financial supporter!   Tap here to go to our merchandise store!   Tap here to visit our YouTube Channel:   Tap here to pick up some of our new sci-fi titles:

Today’s story is by a relatively unknown writer who created one of the most influential science-fiction characters of all time.  But it wasn’t until Anthony Rogers made the leap to being a comic strip that he became known as “Buck” in the comic strip “Buck Rogers 2429 A.D., which premiered on January 7, 1929 and continued until 1968. The title changed annually to keep it exactly 500 years in the future. It was the first science-fiction comic strip, which the author created with artist Dick Calkins. It heavily influenced Alex Raymond, who was developing his Flash Gordon strip at the time. I was very young when the Buck Rogers series was on TV, (which only ran for two seasons) but I remember loving his little robot buddy Twiki. I recognized that he was voiced by Mel Blanc, who did all of my favorite Loony Tunes characters that I watched every day after school. I always wondered by Wilma called Buck “Tony”, and it wasn’t until I read today’s story that I made the connection. Cause I’m really sharp like that. We cover everything from the complexities of relationships, absurd happenings in pop-culture or even pondering identify and what it means to be Black, British and African. Just a few of the topics, we open up for discussion giving our personal perspective.

Horror Fictional and True Stories

The plot involves the narrator, a teacher at a country school outside of Arkham, encountering a strange pupil, Andrew Potter, who is smart but has no desire to advance to a higher grade. He is left alone and rather feared by the other pupils. When the narrator asks Andrew if he wants to advance in school, he says the doesn't require him to go to high school. The narrator then asks to visit Andrew's parents about this. During the visit, the narrator finds a farmstead of menace, an obese mother, an older sister, and a father who says no to Andrew attending school beyond the legal requirement. Troubled by the Mr. Potter's attitude and troubled by what he saw and sensed at the farm, the narrator goes to visit a newspaper editor, and we get the predictable chain of events. The editor refers him to Miskatonic University and the Necronomicon. A professor sees him reading it, and the narrator tells him of the tale of Andrew. From there, the professor tells him that a wizard Potter inhabited the farm until he died and the Potters moved to it from Michigan. They were pleasant at first but changed. The next thing you know we have stones bearing the “Seal of R'lyeh” and a plan to solve things by using them as amulets of protection for the narrator and to touch one to Andrew. When that's done, the boy goes into a fit, and the narrator takes him to the professor's house. They then go to the schoolhouse to wait for the inevitable attack by the Potters. The stones of R'lyeh are used against father and sister. However, they don't have the intended effect. The professor thought the focus of evil, which turns out to be a seeming case of possession, was Mr. Potter. It turns out it's the mother. The Potter house is sealed off with the stones of R'lyeh and set on fire. A strange creature is seen leaving the mother's body, an “amorphous mass . . . tentacled, shimmering, with a cold intelligence and a physical coldness”. Her body shrinks, but she lives, and a black bolt of smoke shoots from the house into the sky in a way reminiscent of the climax of Lovecraft's “The Colour Out of Space”.
