In today's episode, I speak with journalist and filmmaker Erik Olsen.  Erik's video journalism has taken him around the world, but his passion most always lies underwater in our world's oceans. His career has spanned ABC News, The Atlantic, Popular Science, and The New York Times. And earlier this year he had a big spread in the Times Science section where he explored the world of backwater photography where underwater photographers shoot the strange creatures that rise to the surface in the open ocean at night.I met with Erik just as covid was begging to rocket around the world and we recorded days before the world went into lockdown. And yet, even with the anxiety that the world felt as everything shut down, we had a remarkable interview where Erik discussed why he felt such a personal connection to octopuses,  why cephalopods are like beings from another world, and a breathtaking experience he had with a cuttlefish in the Lembeh Strait.Scuba Diving, Free Diving, Ocean Environmentalism, Surfing, and Marine Science. Please give us ★★★★★, leave a review, and tell your friends about us as each share and like makes a difference.

In a time of an extremely divided America, Bruce Bond works with his team to develop common ground and inspire others to create positive change. Bruce Bond has always had a love of politics; he studied it in college and has found great value in political engagement. But over the past several years, American politics has morphed into a new beast, something very different from what he had studied and admired. “It had come to the point where there was a lot of demonizing going on, where if you disagree with me politically, then there’s something wrong with your character,” Bruce explains. “We just felt that was a really dangerous thing.” He and his childhood friend, Erik Olsen, developed an idea of putting people from opposing viewpoints on stage together and then asking them to find points of agreement. The Common Ground Committee was first a side job, something Bruce and Erik would do when they had some spare time. But after two extremely successful events — one in the wake of the 2018 Charlottesville protests and another with John Kerry and Condoleezza Rice — the side job started to gain traction. Not long afterwards, Bruce quit his decades-long IT career to develop Common Ground into a full-time nonprofit. As the country grows more divided over the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other Black Americans, the national response to the coronavirus pandemic and the upcoming presidential election, Bruce hopes that the public uses these meetings of the minds as the foundation for difficult but civil conversations. “When people are awakened to the seriousness of a problem or what is possible either way, they start to move differently and they start to think and act differently and speak differently than what they've done in the past,” he says. “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.” Listen to the complete episode with Bruce Bond to hear more about Common Ground Committee’s “grass-tops” approach, the exhausted majority and Bruce’s high school experience with the notion of try, try, try again. Strickler Agency has been serving their clients for nearly a century. I’m back with another Brand Ambassador Spotlight. This time, I’m joined by Erik Olsen of Strickler Agency to learn about what they do here in the Carlisle and South-Central PA community. Strickler Agency was started in 1925 down in Chambersburg. Erik came to Strickler about 20 years ago after working in the insurance industry and reaching a point where he was tired of telling clients he couldn’t help them because the company he works for didn’t have the right products. That’s when he found Strickler, who did have the right products, and the rest is history. “Their core clients come from all around the area.” The agency is divided into four departments. The commercial department sells your typical business insurance, property, auto, liability, etc. There’s also a personal department that does coverage for homeowners, renters, and auto owners. The ag department services anything from a small farm owner’s policy to large agricultural risks and crop insurance. Finally, the rapidly growing employee benefits department sells group health and other related employee benefit products. Stickler Agency’s core clients come from the local area. They like to be able to service what they sell, so they have clients in South Central PA, Maryland, Virginia, and primarily the 81 corridor. The most common question Erik hears from his clients is, “Do I have enough coverage?” He likes to sit down with them, identify risks and exposure, and see what he can do to help them out. If you want to learn more about Strickler Agency, give them a call at (717) 243-2921 or (800) 503-8908. You can also visit them online at www.stricklerins.com.

People who enjoy board sports like skateboarding, snowboarding or wakeboarding are always looking for ways to up their game. Bored with the limitations of most balance boards, our guest on this episode of Brandstorm, Erik Olsen, invented the Whirly Board out of his garage.   Giving the Whirly Board a Spin Using PVC pipe, a piece of wood, a bowling ball and two pool balls was able to create a versatile balance training board with three balance points that make it possible to spin and walk it around.  Erik’s invention opened the door to markets beyond board sports. Whirly Board is a new way to get fit, using the board for push-ups, squats, agility training, cardio and even yoga. It’s a new accessory for the office. Employees with standing desks can use the Whirly Board in conjunction with a standing desk to stay active, stretching the legs and improving overall balance. The balance boards can even be customized with company logos to give out employees with standing desks or as a corporate gift. The Power of Word-of-Mouth Referrals The Whirly Board is distributed through Erik’s website, Amazon and The Grommet, an online marketplace and product discovery platform for small businesses. It was the Grommet that discovered the Whirly Board and reached out Erik last Christmas. While not expecting much, the site sold more than 150 boards in the first hour. Sales are currently up 400 percent year over year, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals and 5 Star reviews from satisfied customers. Erik is hoping that brand satisfaction will generate more customer reviews and YouTube videos of customers using the Whirly Board in creative ways.
