In this episode, acclaimed author Philip Fracassi joins us to talk about his gripping new novel, The Third Rule of Time Travel. We dive deep into the emotional and psychological layers of time travel, the haunting consequences of reliving the past, and the blurred lines between science and corporate ambition. Fracassi unpacks the complex dynamics between his characters—especially the fragile trust between protagonist Beth and the morally murky Jim Langan—and the cold, clinical setting that mirrors Beth's internal struggles. He shares his thoughtful approach to character development, the personal and professional duality of his lead, and how theoretical physics and universal consciousness inform his storytelling. Plus, we get a look at his writing process, his transition to full-time author, and what's coming next.Website: https://pfracassi.com/Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B000APLIREInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pfracassi/?hl=enPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/Philip_FracassiFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/philipfracassiwriter/Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/pfracassi.bsky.socialThreads: https://www.threads.net/@pfracassiTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@pfracassi

Certain authors gain respect and become immediate commitments from me. As in I am reading whatever the heck they put out. I have not read everything by Philip Fracassi yet, but he won me over with a short story (Fail-safe), and last year Boys in Valley did an amazing job grabbing me with one of the subgenres I am not a huge fan of - the possession novel. When I interviewed him for that book he was talking about working on this one, and I was excited that he was doing Science Fiction. The Third Rule of Time Travel is hard SF, as in the science is taken seriously. It has horror elements but is a character-driven emotional roller coaster of a novel that gave Richard Matheson vibes. The first half of the interview is spoiler-free and a warning we get into the nuts and bolts of writing this amazing novel.

Philip Fracassi is a novelist and screenwriter most known for his hard-hitting traditional horror fiction but is branching out into Science Fiction and historical novels. He is the author of the award-winning story collections, Beneath a Pale Sky and Behold the Void. His novels include Don't Let Them Get You Down (Zagava Press), A Child Alone with Strangers (Talos Press), Gothic (Cemetery Dance), and Tor/Nightfire re-issued his debut novel Boys in the Valley. Boys in the Valley is Fracassi's first international release, and it has been received with wide acclaim, including being in my top ten novels of the year. This is a highly technical conversation under the hood of this gothic historical horror novel. Philip Fracassi is a writer's writer. We get into serious details of the research, construction, and execution of this horror novel. There are about thirty minutes of non-spoiler discussion and then we go deep. We also chat about future books, my favorite of his short stories, and book touring.

Sarah speaks with Philip Fracassi about his novel, Boys in the Valley: "St. Vincent's Orphanage for Boys. Turn of the century, in a remote valley in Pennsylvania. Here, under the watchful eyes of several priests, thirty boys work, learn, and worship. Peter Barlow, orphaned as a child by a gruesome murder, has made a new life here. As he approaches adulthood, he has friends, a future...a family. Then, late one stormy night, a group of men arrive at their door, one of whom is badly wounded, occult symbols carved into his flesh. His death releases an ancient evil that spreads like sickness, infecting St. Vincent's and the children within. Soon, boys begin acting differently, forming groups. Taking sides. Others turn up dead. Now Peter and those dear to him must choose sides of their own, each of them knowing their lives — and perhaps their eternal souls — are at risk." Meaning, a well-crafted story, that's quick and entertaining, AND manages to establish connections with the characters, which lead to me feeling all sorts of things when things started going wrong. What kinds of things? Anxiety, claustrophobia, fear, revulsion, hope, and others that I'm not thinking of. In other words, a great book. Get ready to be sickened by my praise. My guest this week is Philip Fracassi. Last year his historical horror, The Boys in the Valley got the Stephen King endorsement. He's already following up with A Child Alone With Strangers - his second novel (or is it his first, or his third – as you'll hear it's complicated). This book is an all-timer. It blends the relaxed, character driven storytelling of the best 80s horror, with a contemporary cross-genre style that keeps you shocked …  and shook. I tell you now, this book will take your heart, put it in a velvet box – and then stamp on that box until it's mush.We talk about a lot of things in this 70-minute conversation. Writing believable children, creating great villains, and conceiving original monsters and true otherness. We explore insectile horror, empathy overloads and setcking to your guns on word-length.This is my last author-interview of the year and I couldn't have hoped for a better book to discuss.Enjoy! A Child Alone With Strangers was released on October 25th by Talos Press Other books mentioned in this episode include:The Boys in the Valley (2021), by Philip FracassiGothic (2023), by Philip FracassiThe Stand (1990), by Stephen KingThe Magus (1965/1977), by John FowlesLet it Come Down (1952), by Paul BowlesThe Delicate Prey and Other Stories (1950), by Paul BowlesSupport Talking Scared on Patreon Come talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com Support the show

“Fracassi's novel hits me like a cross between McCammon and '80s King. Might be one of them summer blockbusters readers love.” —Laird Barron, author of Worse Angels"A Child Alone with Strangers starts out as a slow burn procedural with supernatural elements and inexorably cranks itself into a pulse-pounding symphony of eldritch horrors and all-too-human violence. Philip Fracassi is the best sort of horror writer--one who is unafraid to hunt for light in even the darkest places." —Shaun Hamill, author of A Cosmology of Monsters When young Henry Thorne is kidnapped and held prisoner in a remote farmhouse surrounded by miles of forest, he finds himself connecting with a strange force living in the woods—using that bond to wreak havoc against his captors. Unknown to the boy, however, is that this ancient being has its own reasons for wanting the interlopers gone—there is something hidden beneath the house, tucked away in the dark, damp root cellar . . . waiting for its return.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Well, fortunately, he brings in BFG contributor Paula Shaffer to talk about her article on how TV has handled the topic of unwanted pregnancy over the years. As you might expect, Jane the Virgin takes the crown. Shonda Rimes also gets a passing grade. We're sure she'll be relieved to hear that. Then special guest star Philip Fracassi appears to plug his own terrific AudioHopper podcast, ‘The Dark Word.' Philip describes what makes his show so good: Listening to writers talk about the nuts and bolts of the publishing business rather than their own divine inspiration. Things veer a bit when Neal starts to ramble about his own publishing successes and failure. Apparently, the publishing business, and the entertainment business in general, are dark and evil because they've failed to fully reward his genius. Philip patiently waits for Neal to get back on topic. Finally, Rachel Llewellyn stops by to chat with Pollack about the ‘Kids In The Hall‘ reboot, now airing on Amazon Prime. Rachel praises the Kids's ability to craft a show despite their well-chronicled creative differences. Neal marvels at how well they've updated a 30-year-old show for modern sensibilities, crafting it around the themes of middle-aged decay while still keeping what made the show so funny and popular in the first place. We're crushing your head! Thanks for listening.

In this week's suspenseful and brilliant episode of the BFG Week in Review Podcast, editor Neal Pollack welcomes first-time guest Philip Fracassi, who runs down a terrific year for horror fiction. A horror writer himself, Fracassi covers the community for BFG, and he's amazed both by the prolific genre writers who brought out new stuff this year and also a new wave of diverse authors who are transforming this genre. It's a Horrorsance! And we're covering it all at BFG.Then here comes Stephen Garrett, loving up Steven Spielberg's ‘West Side Story,' which, despite its lack of box-office success, is getting lots of praise from critics. Garrett is no exception. He praises the dancing, the score, and fabulous performances from Mike Faist and Ariana DeBose. Then William Schwartz returns to the podcast to chat with Neal about ‘The Expanse,' which has just launched its sixth season on Amazon Prime. Schwartz and Pollack both love The Expanse for its action, grittiness, and complex political narrative. Schwartz also points out that The Expanse has a far more realistic view of politics and the military than Star Trek, which can seem over-optimistic and naive by comparison. So watch ‘The Expanse,' go see ‘West Side Story,' and read horror fiction. Get ready for a deep dive episode into the imagery and themes used by Cloverfield (2008) and how they evoke and comment on imagery from 9/11 and terrorism more generally.  Cloverfield was a pretty big deal back in 2008 and we make sure to talk about the critical reception then and discuss some great scholarly articles that have been produced since then.  If you want to talk more about the themes and imagery contained in this movie, or any horror movie for that matter, head on over to the Horror Pod Class Facebook group and click to join.   To let you know up front, we are discussing two academic papers: "Terrorist Attack!: The Spectacle of Evil in the Blended Horror of Cloverfield" by James Aston of Liverpool Hope University "Cloverfield’s Monstrosity: Ideology and Terror" by Steen Christiansen of  Aalborg University.  This one hosted on Academia.edu, but signup up is free! Show Notes: 2:35- Tyler is watching and enjoying the Handmaid's Tale, even though it can be brutal to watch.  Head on over to Signal Horizon and check out Tyler's reviews and recaps of the show. 3:35-  Did you know that the original novel of the Handmaid's Tale is available on Kindle Unlimited?  It is free to sign up and it also has some pretty awesome horror- click here to see some of the awesome books that make Kindle Unlimited worth it for genre fiction fans. 4:30- Big shout-out to Raygun's, a local Kansas City T-Shirt shop and their Gilead line! 5:30-  Mike is reading Blood Standard by Laird Barron.  It is awesome and you ought to pre-order a copy over on Amazon! 8:00-  Speaking of Laird Barron, one of his novellas Mysterium Tremendum is on Pseudopod and it is read by the very talented Jon Padgett.  This story is a three-parter, but you can check out part one right here. 20:00-  First up is "Cloverfield’s Monstrosity: Ideology and Terror" by Steen Christiansen of  Aalborg University.  This is a super interesting look at how we construct ideologies and their associated images. 33:15-  We talk briefly about the other Cloverfield movies, 10 Cloverfield Lane and the Cloverfield Paradox.  For more about these two movies you can read this really interesting article on Junkee about how 10 Cloverfield Lane continues the War on Terror motif of the first film and also check out Tracy's take on the Cloverfield Paradox. 33:45-  "Terrorist Attack!: The Spectacle of Evil in the Blended Horror of Cloverfield" by James Aston of Liverpool Hope University  This paper is super neat because James Aston argues that the movie at least tries to offer a critique on our collective responses to terrorism. 37:00-  The view that Cloverfield reflected some of the imagery from 9/11 is not just held by a small group of scholars and humble podcasters, in fact it was widely discussed at the time.  You can read this Salon article from 2008 that pretty well sums up the sentiment.   40:30-  A really powerful documentary about 9/11 and the images associated with it is 9/11: The Falling Man.   48:00-  Click here to read more about Philip Fracassi's novella, Shiloh.  48:30- Read more on Wikipedia about the unreleased 1972 Jerry Lewis film, The Day the Clown Cried.  Tyler also talks about Scaramouche Jones, a one person play with a similar theme.  Read more about Scaramouche Jones over at The Telegraph. 59:00- Here is the article on Junkee about how 10 Cloverfield Lane continues the War on Terror motif of the first film. We hope you enjoyed today's episode!  Don't forget to hit up the Horror Pod Class Facebook group, let us know what you think of the podcast and what films, books, and topics you think we should discuss next.  You can follow Mike on Goodreads and Tyler on Twitter.  Make sure you also check out Signal Horizon for the latest horror news, reviews, and analysis.  Until then, class dismissed!

Class is back and this time we are discussing the 2013 found footage film Mr. Jones and what it has to tell us about Guerrilla, Street, and Outsider Art.  We talk a whole bunch about how much we liked this movie, even though the overall reception can be described as "mixed" at best.  Plus we sing!  And play the drums! Show notes and useful links: 1:00-  Tyler talks a bit about the "Arrive Alive" presentation at his school.  For more about Arrive Alive, check out their website.  1:30-  Many airports need volunteers to be injured victims during their annual emergency exercises.  Often times they will make you up in some pretty horrific makeup!  Check out Kansas City International's call for volunteers here or Google your local airport if you are interested. 3:50- Tyler is currently reading Year's Best Body Horror 2017 edited by C.P. Dunphey.  If you are interested in the body horror sub-genre, we totally recommend it.  Click here for our Amazon affiliate link and pick up a copy today. 4:20-  Tyler watched Mom and Dad recently, you can check out his review and learn more about Nick Cage going full Cage here. 6:45-  Tyler and Mike both loved the new novella by Philip Fracassi entitled "Shiloh" and the additional bonus story "Soda Jerk."  Click here to see their full review of Shiloh. 9:50-  For more podcasts covering your favorite fiction genres, check out the Shockwaves podcast by Blumhouse. 10:30-  Mike recommends some free horror fiction over at Pseudopod with their really cool original "Alarm Will Sound." 12:00-  Class starts!  Spoilers ahead for Mr. Jones (2013).  Also, we really apologize for our terrible singing.  17:30-  Trailer for Mr. Jones, you can watch the full version over at YouTube. 20:00-  Tyler tells us all about Apotropaic Magic, which is pretty darn interesting.  Learn more over at Wikipedia.   23:45-  No discussion of street and guerrilla art would be complete without a discussion of Banksy.  Check out the trailer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, a documentary about Banksy and try to get a hold of the movie.  It is really well done.   25:00-  Mike discusses an interview that was published on Daily Dead where Mr. Jones writer and director Karl Mueller indicated that one of his inspirations was Henry Darger. 30:15-  Likely the coolest and most mysterious guerrilla/outsider art out there are the Toynbee Tiles.  You can watch an entire documentary about them here for free. 36:00-  Check out more artwork from Pumpkinrot on their website.  Not only is Pumpkinrot responsible for the super cool scarecrows in Mr. Jones, but also some of the work in Krampus. 37:30-  Awesome Huck Magazine article about Apotropaic magic in Bulgaria and the super cool costumes that people wear to ward off evil spirits. 48:00-  For similar works, check out the Laird Barron short story "Strappado."  We recommend just going whole hog down the Laird Barron rabbit hole by purchasing his book Occultation.

Some may be sick of this, but it isn't something we've talked about much on this show, and I believe we contributed meaningfully to the discussion. In today's bumper Bonus July Episode, we have three amazing interviews!Bianca first chats with bestselling and award-winning author, Ann Patchett, about her latest novel, Tom Lake. During the show, the two discuss how and why Ann wrote past and present as 'bleeding into one narrative' in her latest novel; when to show vs when to tell backstory; testing different ways of beginning a story before settling on the best place to start; breaking the writing rule of starting with a character desperately wanting something; causality and reflecting real life accurately; using specificity to intrigue the reader; and planting curiosity seeds at the right time and place. After which, Tina and Renee of Book Talk, etc. podcast, join Bianca to talk about books they love and what they found to be so compelling about them. During the episode, they discuss Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys; Thirst for Salt by Madelaine Lucas; Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi; The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton; Miracle Creek by Angie Kim; and Those Who Wish Me Dead by Michael Koryta. Finally, Ramona Ausubel joins Bianca to talk about her latest novel, The Last Animal. They also discuss story inspiration; the emotional truth of a story; plausibility and suspending disbelief; the personal universal element; intentionally choosing POV; writing a teenage protagonist for an adult novel; the relationship between a writer and their work; the evolution of a project, using Fortunately/Unfortunately for story structure; and how to avoid info dumps when trying to convey very technical information.Find us on our socials:Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_shit_about_writing/ https://www.instagram.com/biancamarais_author/ https://www.instagram.com/carlywatters/ https://www.instagram.com/cece_lyra_agent/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TSNOTYAWWebsites: www.theshitaboutwriting.com, www.biancamarais.com, www.carlywatters.com and www.cecilialyra.com Bookshop.org affiliate page: https://bookshop.org/shop/theshitnoonetellsyouaboutwritingMore information about Ann can be found at http://www.annpatchett.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/parnassusbooks/More information about Book Talk, etc. can be found at booktalkpodcast.com. They're also on Instagram @booktalketc, Twitter @booktalketc, and Facebook @booktalketc.More information about Ramona can be found at www.ramonaausubel.com.
