Is DMT a shortcut to God, or something far stranger? In this rare interview, Dr. Rick Strassman — author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule — joins me to explore what people actually experience during powerful DMT trips. From visions of non-human entities to biblical-level encounters, this conversation will shake up everything you think you know about spirituality, science, and consciousness. We talk about: * Why DMT experiences aren't always blissful * Biblical visions (like Ezekiel's) and DMT parallels * Whether these beings are “real” or archetypal * How Strassman's views have evolved since his original research * What this all means for the psychedelic renaissance

Episode Overview:    In this captivating episode of the Higher Density Living Podcast, host Jason Rigby sits down with Dr. Rick Strassman, a world-renowned psychedelic researcher and author of the groundbreaking book DMT: The Spirit Molecule. Known for his pioneering clinical research on DMT and his deep explorations into altered states of consciousness, Dr. Strassman brings a unique perspective to the table as he dives into the Book of Genesis. Together, they explore the intersections of biblical narratives, Jewish tradition, and the spiritual insights gleaned from his decades of psychedelic and personal inquiry.   From the creation accounts to the Fall, the Flood, and the Tower of Babel, this episode unpacks Genesis through a lens that blends science, spirituality, and prophetic wisdom. Dr. Strassman shares his journey from Zen Buddhism to Judaism, his literal approach to interpreting biblical texts, and how his DMT research informs his understanding of human consciousness and divine interaction. Whether you're a spiritual seeker, a psychedelics enthusiast, or simply curious about the deeper meanings of Genesis, this episode offers a thought-provoking and enriching discussion.   Meet Dr. Rick Strassman   Born in 1952 in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Rick Strassman is a clinical psychiatrist, psychedelic researcher, and author whose work has reshaped our understanding of consciousness. After graduating with honors from Stanford University in biological sciences and earning his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he built a distinguished career in psychiatry and psychopharmacology. His groundbreaking DMT studies at the University of New Mexico in the 1990s marked the first U.S.-approved psychedelic research in over two decades, earning him global recognition.   Dr. Strassman's books, including DMT: The Spirit Molecule (a quarter-million copies sold and translated into over a dozen languages) and DMT and the Soul of Prophecy, bridge science and spirituality. His latest work, My Altered States (December 2024), is an illustrated memoir exploring his personal experiences with altered states from birth to early adulthood. Currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Dr. Strassman resides in Gallup, New Mexico, where he continues to write and consult for psychedelic startups.   Connect with Dr. Strassman: Website: rickstrassman.com Books: Amazon Author Page Joe Rogan Appearances: 2022 Episode | Earlier Episode   Key Topics Discussed:   1. Genesis Through a Jewish Lens   Dr. Strassman shares how his return to Jewish texts after leaving Zen Buddhism in 1996 shaped his understanding of Genesis. Raised in a conservative Jewish household, he re-engaged with the Hebrew Bible as an adult, finding parallels between the vivid experiences of his DMT volunteers and the prophetic visions of biblical figures. Two Creation Narratives: Genesis 1 offers a cosmic, orderly account, while Genesis 2 zooms into a detailed, human-focused story. Dr. Strassman views them as complementary—an overview followed by specifics—reflecting a divine act of creation from nothing. Divine Order and Cause-and-Effect: He explores how Genesis reveals God's nature through the laws of cause and effect, suggesting that nature itself mirrors divine will.   2. The Fall: Free Will and Consciousness   The conversation delves into Adam and Eve's disobedience, which Dr. Strassman frames as the first exercise of free will with explicit consequences. He challenges the notion of the fruit as a psychedelic, instead emphasizing its role in shifting human perception from truth to the duality of good and evil. Shabbat as Eternal Rest: Jason raises the idea of the Sabbath lacking an “evening and morning” close, hinting at an eternal state. Dr. Strassman connects this to emulating God's rest, though he notes the Hebrew Bible avoids afterlife specifics.   3. Cain, Abel, and the Flood: Sin as a Virus   From Cain's envy-driven murder of Abel to the violence (Hebrew: Hamas) preceding the Flood, Dr. Strassman sees these stories as literal events encoding lessons about human nature and societal decay. The Flood, he suggests, was a divine reset prompted by humanity's failure to align with God's intent. Sons of Elohim: Theories range from angels to elites interbreeding with humans, disrupting divine order. Dr. Strassman remains open but grounded in the text's ambiguity.   4. Tower of Babel: Misunderstood Ambition   Dr. Strassman offers a fresh take on the Tower of Babel, arguing it's less about hubris and more about humanity's refusal to disperse post-Flood as God commanded. The scattering, he posits, fulfilled an original divine plan, with the tower as a symbol of misdirected unity.   5. Abraham's Covenant and Monotheism   The patriarchal narratives (Genesis 12–50) shift focus to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Dr. Strassman highlights Abraham's call as a pivotal revelation of monotheism, questioning why Abraham was chosen—a mystery deepened by Midrashic tales of his iconoclastic zeal. Egypt's Role: He attributes Egypt's prominence to its cultural dominance, akin to the modern U.S., rather than mystical significance.   6. Prophecy, Psychedelics, and the Living Word   Drawing from his DMT research, Dr. Strassman theorizes that prophetic visions might stem from endogenous DMT spikes, serving as a bridge for divine communication. He views Genesis as a prophetically received text, resonating with readers through its altered-state origins. Is the Bible Living? While Jason sees it as God's living word, Dr. Strassman approaches it as a guidebook to cause and effect, enduringly relevant but not inherently “alive” beyond its influence.   7. From Zen to Judaism   Dr. Strassman reflects on his shift from Zen Buddhism—where he felt alienated by iconography—to Judaism's monotheistic grounding. This transition, sparked by personal and professional changes, led him to a more literal, grounded study of biblical texts.   Memorable Quotes On DMT and Reality: “When volunteers said it felt ‘more real than real,' I learned to take it at face value—it opened up the strangest, most fascinating parts of their experiences.” On Genesis: “If you assume it's real, you can enter its world and learn what it's like. It's complex and rich in ways you miss if you see it as just archetypes.” On Prophecy: “The Hebrew Bible's appeal lies in its prophetic state—it's like reading a text that tingles with divine resonance.” On Monotheism: “It's not about whether it's wise—it's about whether it's true.”   Why You Should Listen   This episode is a rare fusion of psychedelic science and biblical exegesis, offering fresh insights into Genesis from a thinker who's explored both the outer edges of consciousness and the depths of Jewish tradition. Dr. Strassman's literal yet open-minded approach challenges conventional interpretations, making this a must-listen for anyone interested in spirituality, human potential, or the mysteries of existence.   Resources & Links Books by Dr. Rick Strassman: DMT: The Spirit Molecule – Buy on Amazon DMT and the Soul of Prophecy – Buy on Amazon My Altered States (Dec 2024) – Buy on Amazon Joe Rogan Episodes: 2022 Interview Earlier Interview Dr. Strassman's Website: rickstrassman.com   Call to Action   Enjoyed this deep dive into Genesis with Dr. Rick Strassman? In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Rick Strassman, MD joins to discuss the topic of endogenous DMT. Dr. Strassman is adjunct associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule and The Psychedelic Handbook. His DMT and psilocybin studies in the early 1990s initiated the renewal of human research with psychedelics in the U.S. In this conversation, Dr. Strassman discusses the finer details of DMT, from endogenous production in humans and animals, to visionary experiences and theological implications. Dr. Strassman also covers the research that's been done regarding endogenous DMT, clarifying what we do and don't know about the role of the pineal gland and how this might relate to what is reported during near-death experiences. He also discusses the personal and relational quality of psychedelic experiences induced by DMT, mentioning that unitive mystical experiences were actually rare in the trials he conducted, with more experiences having a personal quality, drawing upon the life experiences and interests of the participants. In closing, Dr. Strassman shares his thoughts on the origins of the visions that many report during DMT use.    In this episode you'll hear: The overlap between psychedelic experiences and meditation techniques The relationship between fear, self-awareness, and difficult DMT experiences The placebo effect and psychedelic research Dr. Strassman's thoughts on non-hallucinogenic psychedelics DMT as a possible treatment for strokes to prevent damage and speed recovery Effects of microdosing in animals and humans   Quotes: “I think the best term for these compounds is psychedelic, which means mind manifesting or mind disclosing, because only one of our fifty-five or so normal volunteers had what one might call a mystical unitive state. … Everybody basically had an experience that was totally dependent on them. It was not inherent in the drug.” [9:45] “You could still speculate that to the extent that non-drug states resemble those brought on by giving DMT… that DMT plays a role in the production of those states. But the data aren't there yet. That's why we need more people doing this research.” [24:16] “If psychedelics are super placebos and if we have a psychedelic drug in our brain, it's attempting to speculate that normally the placebo effect could be mediated by endogenous DMT.” [27:42] “If you starve neurons of oxygen they start dying, but if you add DMT they survive much longer. So there seems to be some neuroprotective effect of DMT on ischemic damage to neurons, at least in the test tube.” [32:27]   Links: Dr. Strassman's website The Psychedelic Handbook by Dr. Strassman DMT: The Spirit Molecule by Dr. Strassman DMT and the Soul of Prophecy: A New Science of Spiritual Revelation in the Hebrew Bible by Dr. Strassman Dr. Strassman on FacebookPrevious episode: Exploring DMT Entities with Matthew Johnson, PhD Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

Rick is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine who's probably most well-known for his book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule–a book that explores his research with DMT in the early 1990s. Rick has written several books since then, most notably his 2022 book, The Psychedelic Handbook. They discuss Rick's early DMT research, his motivation for writing the handbook, the therapeutic potential of different psychedelics, the placebo effect, different types of spiritual or mystical experiences occasioned by psychedelics, the importance of set and setting, the limitations and potential dangers of psychedelic tools, how to integrate a psychedelic experience, and much more. https://www.rickstrassman.com/Learn more about our podcast at https://numinus.com/podcast/Learn more about psychedelic therapy training opportunities at https://numinus.com/our-training-selection/Learn more about our clinical trials at https://numinus.com/research/ Learn more about Numinus at https://numinus.com/Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drstevethayer/https://www.instagram.com/innerspacedoctor/https://www.instagram.com/numinushealth/

Since prehistory, humans have used a range of psychedelic drugs for communion with the gods, connection with nature, or for the pure pleasure and wonder they generate as they transform the mind and the world. But one natural psychedelic in particular towers above the rest in its astonishing power to replace the normal waking world with a bizarre alternate reality replete with a diverse panoply of intelligent alien beings. As well as being the most powerful, N,N-dimethyltryptamine, more commonly known as DMT, is also the most common naturally-occurring psychedelic and can be found in countless plant species scattered across the Earth. DMT carries a profound message embedded in our reality, a message that we are now beginning to decode. In Alien Information Theory, neurobiologist, chemist, and pharmacologist, Dr. Andrew R. Gallimore, explains how DMT provides the secret to the very structure of our reality, and how our Universe can be likened to a cosmic game that we now find ourselves playing. Gallimore explains how our reality was constructed using a fundamental code which generated our Universe — and countless others — as a digital device built from pure information with the purpose of enabling conscious intelligences, such as ourselves, to emerge. You will learn how fundamental digital information self-organises and complexifies to generate the myriad complex forms and organisms that fill our world; how your brain constructs your subjective world and how psychedelic drugs alter the structure of this world; how DMT switches the reality channel by allowing the brain to access information from normally hidden orthogonal dimensions of reality. And, finally, you will learn how DMT provides the secret to exiting our Universe permanently — to complete the cosmic game and to become interdimensional citizens of hyperspace.Alien Information Theory is a unique account of this hidden structure of reality and our place within it, drawing on a diverse range of disciplines -- including neuroscience, computer science, physics, and pharmacology -- to carefully explain these complex ideas, which are illustrated with full-colour diagrams throughout.Dr. Andrew Gallimore is a computational neurobiologist, pharmacologist, chemist, and writer who has been interested in the neural basis of psychedelic drug action for many years and is the author of a number of articles and research papers on the powerful psychedelic drug, N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and its effects on the brain and consciousness. In 2015, he collaborated with DMT pioneer Dr. Rick Strassman, author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule, to develop a pharmacokinetic model of DMT as the basis of a target-controlled intravenous infusion protocol for extended journeys in the bizarre worlds to which DMT gates access. His current interests focus on DMT and other psychedelic molecules as tool for gating access to otherwise inaccessible subjective worlds, their neuroscientific underpinning, and their possible ontological and metaphysical implications. He currently lives and works in Tokyo.https://www.buildingalienworlds.com/https://blossomanalysis.com/people/andrew-gallimore/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2790919/advertisement

Additionally he paints stunningly accurate portraits of comedians and icons from psychedelic culture, both past and current, like Terence McKenna, Mike Tyson, Duncan Trussell and many more.   During the podcast we learn about how Charlie began creating art, and why he prefers paint on canvas over creating images digitally. The two then riff on trippy and mind-stimulating topics like simulation theory, infinite consciousness, remote viewing, dreams, archetypes, the great mystery of existence and beyond. Ever wondered about the uses for psychedelic medicines such as LSD, psilocybin, Ayahuasca, and MDMA? How to use them, how to integrate their effects in to your every day life, or what potential health risks there are? Our guest this week – Dr. Rick Strassman – has the answers, fresh off of his marathon 4-hour-long appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. Well, we only went for 2 hours, but that was a new record for my program.Following the release of his newest book, The Psychedelic Handbook: A Practical Guide to Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine, MDMA, and Ayahuasca, Strassman discusses his ideas on the big four and everything in between. “I think you need to be open-minded about your experiences.”A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Strassman obtained his undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from Stanford University and his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He trained in general psychiatry at UC Davis in Sacramento and took a clinical psychopharmacology research fellowship at UC San Diego. Joining the faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1984, his clinical research with melatonin discovered its first known function in humans. Absolute legend.  Clinical research psychiatrist, founding figure of the American psychedelic research renaissance, and best-selling author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule [2001].   Dr. Rick Strassman shares his experience in writing his newest book: The Psychedelic Handbook: A Practical Guide to Psilocybin, LSD, Ketamine, MDMA, and DMT/Ayahuasca.  I had such a great time talking with Dr. Strassman, truly grateful for his time and wisdom.  “Psychedelic drugs are remarkable mind-altering substances, arguably the most interesting drugs in all of medicine. They reliably produce a unique state of mind in which you see visions and hear voices. You may lose awareness of your body while your consciousness travels through deep outer—or inner—space. You may feel almost unbearable ecstasy, terror, or both—or nothing at all" -Dr. Strassman Get a copy of his new book today! Link here: https://www.rickstrassman.com/

Naturally occurring DMT may produce prophecy-like states of consciousness and thus represent a bridge between biology and religious experience• Reveals the striking similarities between the visions of the Hebrew prophets and the DMT state described by Strassman's research volunteers• Explains how prophetic and psychedelic states may share biological mechanisms• Presents a new top-down “theoneurological” model of spiritual experienceAfter completing his groundbreaking research chronicled in DMT: The Spirit Molecule, Rick Strassman was left with one fundamental question: What does it mean that DMT, a simple chemical naturally found in all of our bodies, instantaneously opens us to an interactive spirit world that feels more real than our own world? When his decades of clinical psychiatric research and Buddhist practice were unable to provide answers to this question, Strassman began searching for a more resonant spiritual model. He found that the visions of the Hebrew prophets--such as Ezekiel, Moses, Adam, and Daniel--were strikingly similar to those of the volunteers in his DMT studies. Carefully examining the concept of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible, he characterizes a “prophetic state of consciousness” and explains how it may share biological and metaphysical mechanisms with the DMT effect.Examining medieval commentaries on the Hebrew Bible, Strassman reveals how Jewish metaphysics provides a top-down model for both the prophetic and DMT states, a model he calls “theoneurology.” Theoneurology bridges biology and spirituality by proposing that the Divine communicates with us using the brain, and DMT--whether naturally produced or ingested--is a critical factor in such visionary experience. This model provides a counterpoint to “neurotheology,” which proposes that altered brain function simply generates the impression of a Divine-human encounter.Theoneurology addresses issues critical to the full flowering of the psychedelic drug experience. Perhaps even more important, it points the way to a renewal of classical prophetic consciousness, the soul of Hebrew Bible prophecy, as well as unexpected directions for the evolution of contemporary spiritual practice.Rick Strassman, M.D., is clinical associate professor of psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and president and cofounder of the Cottonwood Research Foundation. From 1990 to 1995 he performed the first new human studies with psychedelic drugs in the United States in more than 20 years, focusing on the powerful naturally occurring compound DMT. The author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule and coauthor of Inner Paths to Outer Space, he lives in Gallup, New Mexico.

How can Buddhist philosophy empower us to work more skillfully with the medicines of our world—including psychedelic medicines like DMT, LSD, MDMA, and others? This contemplation was inspired in part by the surge of interest in psychedelic medicines in the past decade or so, and also in part by the dialogue I had with Rick Strassman, author of DMT: The Spirit Molecule, and DMT and the Soul of Prophecy. Rick found himself turning away from Buddhist philosophy as a framework for modeling and working with psychedelic experiences. While I applaud his work to show how the Hebrew Bible can help support working with psychedelic medicines, I disagree with his suggestions that Buddhist philosophy doesn't provide every bit as skillful a support for us.In this contemplation we begin to consider the relevance of Buddhist philosophy for maximizing the benefits psychedelic—or any other medicines—offer us. Whether we work with horse medicine, forest medicine, the medicine of music, the medicine of dance, or any one of the psychedelic medicines, we will find profound guidance in Buddhist philosophy for realizing the fullest potentials of our path of healing and transformative insight. After we lay out some juicy philosophical reflections in this and a following contemplation, we will consider a kind of philosopher's guide to working with the medicines of our world. What are the practices we should have in place as we approach the work we need to do to heal self and world at the same time?

How To Die Happy

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2022 125:39

In this episode of the How To Die Happy podcast, we spoke to 77-year-old psychotherapist Keith Hagenbach about his recent introduction to Ayahuasca plant medicine and how it's completely reshaped his perspective on psychotherapy and the bright future of substance-assisted therapy. While we're still in the early stages, Ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, DMT are all being trialled in various parts of the world for clinical use in substance-assisted therapy. The US is making progressive moves in this area, with 13 cities now decriminalising psychedelics. The hope is that, as the research continues, psychedelics will eventually create a tsunami of change in the world of psychotherapy. Keith is a huge advocate of substance-assisted therapy, but it remains illegal to include plant medicine in his UK practice. However, in October 2021, Boris Johnson promised to examine all the evidence pointing towards the positive healing benefits of plant medicines. The likely eventual mass-production and adoption of psychedelics carry promise and danger in the shape of a subsequent synthetic psychedelic black market. The concern lies explicitly with the idea of people using synthetic psychedelics in the wrong setting and without trained and experienced guides. Due to a technical issue, we lost a section where Keith refers to the Ayahuasca as "The Mother." Indigenous people and those working with the medicine often refer to it as "Mother" or "Grandmother" due to the repeated experience of being visited by a feminine entity who guides people through their medicine journey. This is a whopping episode, but it's 100% authentic, informative, and vulnerable. It's not just a discussion about Ayahausca; it's a deep dive with an experienced psychotherapist who's lived and long and fascinating journey. Now, aged 77, he has had a new lease of life and received a great gift, namely the ability to let go of his fear. He credits Ayahuasca for this gift. An apology Martin mentioned the documentary DMT: The Spirit Molecule and incorrectly credited Rick Strauss instead of Dr. Rick Strassman, the author of the original book and co-creator of the documentary. Keith has kindly shared a list of books and documentaries that he hopes you might find of interest should you choose to explore the world of Ayahuasca, psychedelics, and substance-assist psychotherapy. He also held a fellowship in clinical pharmacology research at UC San Diego and was Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico.    Strassman was the first person to do human research with the psychedelic DMT. And through that research he authored the famed non-fiction book DMT: The Spirit Molecule which was subsequently turned into a documentary with the same name featuring Joe Rogan as the narrator (whose podcast he has also been on). He has also written two other novels, the non-fiction book DMT and the Soul of Prophecy - in which he compares Hebrew prophecy with DMT experiences - and the fictional novel Joseph Levy Escapes Death.    On this episode we have the great doctor explain all things DMT and other psychedelics such as LSD and ketamine, you know, the good stuff. We also learn more about Dr. Strassman himself, too, which gives us insight into how he approached his research in the first place.    To say the least, we at FDB were all too eager to be schooled in this class, hell, we sat right up front willingly and raised our hands even when we weren't called upon.  The best students he ever had.   So get your changa and your pipe, take a hit, wait ten seconds, exhale, repeat two more times, kick back and focus your attention on our voices as we take you past the light show, past the beings trying to take you to your death, go through the tunnel and find us on the other side in this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ.
