It's National Rum Day and I thought well it doesn't make sense to do a drum episode, so let's talk rum. Rum by the numbers According to statista.com. Retail sales of rum in the United States reached about eight billion U.S. dollars in 2020. The most revenue in that year was generated for suppliers of premium rum, the second lowest price tier. The value of rum imports in the U.S. has been steadily increasing, year after year. In 2020, the value of rum imports increased by 5.5 % to 145 million U.S. dollars. Three out of the four top countries of origin for U.S. rum imports were in the Caribbean, with the leader, the Dominican Republic, accounting for almost double the value of the next most significant trade partner. Bacardi, a family-owned company headquartered in Bermuda, produces rum of the same name which holds the largest share of the U.S. rum market. The total sales volume of rum in the U.S. increased to 25.1 million 9-liter cases in 2020, representing an increase of four percent over the previous year. Per capita consumption meanwhile dipped slightly to 0.47 liters in the same year. Rum has a spike in consumption during the summer months when consumers are drinking poolside cocktails, but December is the month with the overall highest consumption. Welcome to August 16th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the need for speed and the spirit of the islands. Roller coasters attract adrenaline junkies to amusement parks around the world. These rides are thrilling and sometimes scary. But oddly enough, they were invented to keep people away from drinking and gambling. LaMarcus Adna Thompson built the first roller coaster in Coney Island, New York and it became very popular. The cars were powered only by gravity and sometimes hit top speeds of…6 miles an hour. The ride only cost a nickel, but people would ride it multiple times. A tradition that lives on to this day. On National Roller Coaster Day, take a trip down memory lane or choose something a little more wild. When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. And in the 1600s when sugar production was booming, life gave the West Indies lots of molasses. This byproduct mostly went to waste until it was discovered that a delicious spirit could be distilled from it. Rum was first recorded in Barbados as rumbullion or kill devil and indeed it caused quite a stir. It is said that British sailors received regular rations of the liquor from the 18th century all the way through 1970. But when England began heavily taxing the Colonies for their sugar, molasses and rum a rebellion started brewing. Today this spirit inspires party drinks with umbrellas and on National Rum Day we celebrate with one of life's best examples of turning lemons into lemonade. I'm Anna Devere and I'm John McClain filling in for Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ok, so Disneyland is still closed along with many other theme parks, but it is still National Roller Coaster Day. I suggest building a coaster in your backyard. It is also National Rum Day; I don't think that you should have the rum before you create the coaster, have that after. Lastly, it is National Tell A Joke Day, as a dad, I have plenty of them, especially after I drink rum.

It's another episode of the DJV podcast with Doug, Jen, Victoria Keelan and Cara. Today, we of course start off with Aretha Franklin and all of the wonderful eulogies and memories on social media from people all around the world. We continue in the world of entertainment by taking a trip to Cleveland, where bud light is promising Browns fans free beer if the team can win - just 1 game. And if you’re a big fan of Nascar and reality TV, get ready for a brand new show about Nascar wives. Fresh fish fans, we’ve got bad news about Salmon from Cooke Seafood. A huge group of their farmed salmon got loose this week, mixing with fresh salmon and possibly jeopardizing the quality of salmon you buy. Jen has new information on a new security system hitting the Metro system in LA, more scary news about the dangers of the water in our country, and the gang celebrates National Rum Day with a few cocktails.
This week I will be the MC to High & Dry’s First Annual Rum Competition on August 16th which is National Rum Day. It is part of Downtown Houston effort to bring new businesses that are looking to entertain its patrons with craft and fun. Also, in the Montrose area of Houston, I will be doing a Tiki Day at Brasil Houston with Trois Rivers Rhum on Saturday the 18th. Aside from that, my interview with local bartender Marla Martinez. Her story struck a chord with my experience with women in the industry who often think that their not good enough to do the job. In Marla’s case, there were mentors that encouraged her to do her best and move forward. Not everyone has that sort of encouragement to do their best. The nurturing of talent is something I’ve seen great mentors do and those who have had the luck to have them have benefited greatly. I hope you enjoy the interview and look forward to seeing some of you this week!
August 16th is National Rum Day. So this week the Lushes celebrate by talking everything Rum.
