Most financial acquirers will arrive at an offer for your business by calculating the profit they expect you to make and deciding what they are willing to pay today, for your profit stream in the future. Because you are competing with lots of other places that the acquirer could invest their money, multiples are usually in the low to mid-single digits of your pre-tax profit.  A strategic acquisition is an entirely different animal. A strategic acquirer will value your company based on how much more of their product they can sell, which is exactly what Business Objects (now SAP) did when they bought Nick Kellet’s business, Next Action Technologies, for more than eight times revenue.

Happy birthday to all, happy birthday to all, happy birthday Boring Adelaide, happy birthday to all. Thank you, everybody, for listening to our show during its first year. We have LOVED your comments, your loyalty, your interest, your likes, your social media sharing, your love for Adelaide and South Australia! For our first birthday show, we left the Anthem Studios and recorded at Cafe De Vili's in Mile End. Many thanks to Vili, Ben, Sam and the crew for hosting us - you helped heaps with your hospitality. We chose Cafe De Vilis because we discovered in episode 50 that Brett Monten and Susan Lily had NEVER eaten the South Australian icon dish, the pie floater. Neither had Nick Kellet, our guest from England and Canada. So our birthday show was chosen as an excuse to baptise them into the great South Aussie ritual of drowning your pie in pea soup and ladelling tomato sauce and a little vinegar on top. We were joined by Rosemount Wines winemaker, John Gledhill, who brought a multi-trophy-winning Rosemount 2012 GSM from McLaren Vale for the SA Drink Of The Week. Chloe Reschke-Macguire from Yelp joined us to highlight some much-loved Adelaide icons. And from our community of wonderful listeners, we had humbling messages from Vincent Brown, Dave Walsh, Alice Carr and Tony Drake. We also reveal the three most listened-to episodes of our first year. And we were joined by our much-loved founding member, Colin Long. Brett also snuck in some high energy music from Kyle Landman. Shaun Shiraz Mitchell is becoming the new Mr Adelaide, thanks to his Facebook Page, Things you should do in Adelaide. It boasts more than 40,000 fans and keeps trickling Adelaidean highlights through the social channels of Adelaide and South Australia. The picture on this page is from his first post in August 2013 of a Cookie Monster cocktail from the famous Austral Hotel in Rundle Street. He describes it in this week's show. This week also noted the anniversary of Queen Adelaide's birthday and we pay our tributes. In a more serious manner, we discuss the passing of Robin Williams with some help from Adelaide psychologist, Alexandra Frost from Attuned Psychology. She was inspired by Robin in her university studies in the 80s, particularly his Carpe Diem speech from the movie, Dead Poets Society. The discussion also gives us the opportunity for playing Brett Monten's great track, RUOK? Ben Pike, from Melbourne Street Cellars, shoots us some great South Australian nostalgia AND a quiz question. Wine, courtesy of Caitlin from Feast On Foot, is from the Barossa, and music comes from a man who grew up on a remote, South Australian station. There is a strong entrepreneurial flavour to tonight's show. In many ways it is a showcase of the creative, risk-taking, passionate culture that is developing in Adelaide and South Australia. First up, Caitlin Hillson, tells us about her inspiration for launching a new food tourism business, Feast On Foot. How far would you walk for your supper? I think, with Caitlin at the helm, you'd be willing to walk a square mile! Next up, we chat with Nick Kellett from Canada, the co-founder of Listly. Listly is an online service that lets you create lists of items, places, foods - you name it - and share them socially for business or personal reasons. You can see one we created at the bottom of this page. We find out why he's in Adelaide for two months and why we should care about Listly. Then Susan Lily, our Nigel for the night, gives us insights into an explosion of creativity happening in the FOOM competition for singers and songwriters (our own Brett Monten is a contestant). We also have an historical aspect to tonight's show with radio luminary, Phil McEvoy, filing a report contrasting modern day Turkey with the role in World War One - an event that started 100 years ago this week. Plus we have one last visit to Tenafeate Creek Wines for a few months, music from Sleepless, a patchwork Adelaide Visa Council and cheerios to the who's who of SA. #TChat Radio is all new and live Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 6:30 pm ET (3:30 pm PT). Remember, the #TChat Twitter chat will follow from 7-8 pm ET.   Even though we didn't have a radio show last week, we still had a powerhouse crowdsourced #TChat.    Segue -- according to this week's #TChat Radio guest, "Collaboration and cooperation are the only way to succeed today. It’s how we scale."   And with U.S. companies spending 39 percent more on social learning in 2012 than they did the year before according to Bersin by Deloitte, we'll discuss why this is all so critical for personal and professional growth and success.    With an explosive demand for social learning, formal and informal knowledge sharing, and increased collaboration, employers are finding new ways to enrich people’s careers, foster their engagement and retain them at the company.    Join #TChat co-creators and hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W. Grossman as we welcome our special guest: Nick Kellet, social collaboration proponent and co-founder of List.ly, a service that curates the Web's best social lists.   This will be another important show for us all, so we hope to "hear" you here!  **A special thank you to our "world of work" partner Achievers. Learn more here!
