Mel Jacobson started selling light bulbs out of a van in 1951 and in 1955, Paul's Grandfather Don McLellan joined Mel, then bought the company in 1982 when Mel retired. When the internet arrived, teenage Paul built a website and started selling light bulbs online. But vanolite.com just wasn't going to cut it. And so LightBulbs.com was born. Paul and his brother-in-law Jason tell us how they built up the online business and how they continue to keep it successful. Hint - they have a big family. Paul created LightBulbs.com's first website in 1996, and continues to provide all eCommerce development today, focusing on providing a fast, responsive and user-friendly experience. After over 25 years of working in nearly every position at the company, Paul now rests comfortably as President (and Programmer). When he isn't working at LightBulbs.com, he's spending time with his wife Laura and their nine children (five of which are currently employed by LightBulbs.com), enjoying the outdoors, especially their favorite vacation spot of Fort Myers Beach, FL; and in his spare time, Paul really, really enjoys immersing himself in a good movie or video game. Jason has been with LightBulbs.com for 24 years and works directly with: Sales, Distribution, Customer Service, Accounting and Web Content. Fresh out of high school and after one year of doing tech support for a dial-up ISP in Minneapolis, he decided to join the family lighting business of his then girlfriend – who eventually became his wife.Since joining Service Lighting, Inc. / LightBulbs.com in 2000, Jason helped the company develop a pick, pack and ship process that handled a 1500% increase in average daily volume in these 24 years. In 2013, Jason began working with both Commercial and Retail / Utility Sales Managers on various projects and initiatives for their customers. Overseeing the growth of an online sales department that went from 4 reps up to 13 in those 11 years.Jason loves spending time with two kids, playing fantasy sports and having his heart constantly broken by the sports teams in Minnesota, especially the Vikings…

There's a module for that! Brief history How old: created in Nov 2022 Versions available: 1.0.0-beta1, works with D9 and 10 Maintainership Actively maintained, most recent release was in the past week Number of open issues: 4, none of which are bugs Test coverage Usage stats: 12 sites Maintainer(s): partdigital Module features and usage Allows a site builder to define different policies that can be used to manage content access or editing capabilities based on various factors, all within the Drupal UI Criteria can include field values of the content, field values on the current user's profile, the time of day, and more The policy can restrict access, for example view acces to only selected people or people with a certain role or field value on their profile. I Once defined, policies can be assigned manually, or automatically applied based on configurable selection criteria The project page describes this as an Attribute Based Access Control (ABAC) architecture, which complements Drupal core's Role Based Access Control that our listeners are probably familiar with I used it for the first recently, and found that given the power and flexibility the module provides, it's great that it has in-depth documentation I filed a couple of issues (technically half of the open issues) and partdigital was very responsive The module does also provide an API for defining your own policy type, access rules, rule widgets, and more. So if you need a setup even more custom that what Access Policy can provide out of the box, it's likely you can extend it to meet your individual use case

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Open Phil is seeking bilingual people to help translate EA/EA-adjacent web content into non-English languages, published by Eli Rose on August 23, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary I work on Open Phil's longtermist Effective Altruism Community Growth team. Our broad goal is to grow and support the pool of people who are well-positioned to work on longtermist priority projects. One thing we're interested in is making it the case that more people are exposed to high-quality content — books, blog posts, papers, podcasts, videos, articles, etc. — on relevant topics, like effective altruism, longtermism, existential risk, rationality, etc. (This includes object-level content on cause areas like AI alignment and governance, biosecurity, global priorities, animal welfare, global health, etc.) But there's a lot of high-quality content of this sort that's currently only available in English or a few other world languages. This significantly limits how many people the content can reach. For this reason, Open Phil is interested in funding work that leads to EA/EA-adjacent content getting translated from English into other languages. We're looking for people who are able to work full- or part-time (at least 5 hours a week), either a) translating content themselves, or b) hiring non-EA professional translators and reviewing their work for quality. Apply here if you're interested in paid opportunities, part- or full-time, to help get content translated. FAQ Why is Open Phil excited about translation work? Translation work looks to me like an unusually concrete task aimed directly at a serious bottleneck in community-building. It can also be done remotely and on one's own schedule, unlike other types of community-building work (e.g. running meetup groups). One simple way of thinking about the impact of translation work is by thinking about yourself as a miniature copy of the author. For example, the post On Caring took a certain number of hours for its author (Nate Soares) to write and has accrued a certain number of readers over time, which led to a certain amount of impact (which I think was positive). Currently, I'm not aware of any translation of this post into French. If you were to cause it to be translated into French, it would start accruing readers (probably fewer than it did in English), and after a while it'd have had some amount of impact, which would be some fraction of the impact Nate had in the original writing. In this scenario, you effectively spent some of your time acting as a mini-Nate. The “miniature version of the author” framing might make translation work sound like an unbelievably good use of time. Some important things this framing doesn't highlight: The resulting translated work still needs to somehow get distributed to readers (which won't happen automatically). The impact of a translation may be higher or lower than its raw number of readers would suggest. On the “lower” side: it is unfortunately, currently more difficult for people who don't speak English to get involved in the EA community, for a variety of reasons (location of jobs, location of events, etc.). So readers of translated work may struggle to turn their interest into impact. On the “higher” side: There's a lot less EA-related content in non-English languages. This means that someone who reads your translated work might have been less likely to encounter similar ideas elsewhere, which gives you more counterfactual “credit” for whatever impact they go on to have. But overall, I like how this framing highlights some core parts of why translation work is highly valuable per unit time, according to me: Translation is easier than original creation, so you can piggyback off the best authors' work without yourself needing to be among EA's best writers. You have the benefit of hindsigh...
