How to Lower Cortisol After Cancer: 7 Free + Paid Things That Worked

Cortisol after cancer is the conversation nobody on my care team had with me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 — invasive ductal carcinoma, stage one, grade two. I went through lumpectomy, radiation, ovarian suppression, and two years on an aromatase inhibitor before I had to come off because my bones were already in osteoporosis. Throughout all of it, my nervous system was screaming. My cortisol was running hot all day long, confirmed by a Dutch test. And not one doctor told me what stress was doing to my body or how to mitigate it. In this solo episode of Not Today Cancer, I'm walking you through the seven activities that lowered my cortisol...broken into the things that don't cost a dime (meditation, breathwork, walking outside, unplugging) and the things that do (acupuncture, energy healing, therapy). I'm also sharing the actual research behind each one, so you know this isn't woo...it's documented science.  What you'll learn: • Why cortisol is wrecked after a cancer diagnosis (and why mine was high long before) • The symptoms of high cortisol most breast cancer survivors miss • How mindfulness meditation protected the cortisol rhythm of breast cancer survivors in a randomized controlled trial • Why a single session of slow breathing drops cortisol immediately • The "nature pill" research showing 20–30 minutes outside lowers cortisol 21% per hour • Why the NCCN officially recommends acupuncture for cancer survivors If you're a breast cancer survivor, caregiver, or anyone whose body has been running on fumes...this episode is for you. We don't get the option of not mitigating stress. Pick one thing on this list and start tomorrow. Disclaimer: This episode reflects my personal experience and a summary of public research. It is not medical advice. Always consult your care team.

Today Jen welcomes cancer survivor, business owner, and holistic health advocate Stephanie Rouzee to Not Today Cancer. Stephanie calls herself a "corporate dropout turned cancer thriver" after leaving a high-pressure mortgage career to prioritize healing, purpose, and time with her family. Stephanie shares how she was originally told "cancer doesn't hurt" when she reported painful breast symptoms, despite having dense breasts and feeling a clear lump. Months later, severe pain finally led to a same-day mammogram, biopsy, and a diagnosis of stage 1, grade 2 invasive ductal carcinoma. She opens up about navigating endless appointments, portal results that quietly revealed "invasive ductal carcinoma," and the moment she chose to see cancer as an "opportunity" instead of a life-ending sentence. You'll hear: The exact symptoms she felt (including pain) and why dense breasts plus "it doesn't hurt so it's fine" can be such a dangerous combo. Her treatment path: lumpectomy, 22 rounds of radiation, medically induced menopause, and why radiation fatigue hit her harder than she expected. Why she ultimately stopped hormone-blocking meds after joint pain, brain fog, and the terrifying moment she couldn't remember her own son's name. How she uses food as medicine now—focusing on plants, organic grass‑fed meats, mushroom coffee, low‑sugar, low‑processed eating, and specific bio‑nutrients to support hormones and healing. The role of exercise, walking, and strength training in lowering inflammation, regulating hormones, and supporting her mental health post-treatment. Her experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy and functional testing (like the Dutch test) to uncover high estrogen, cortisol issues, and estrogen detox challenges. Why she quit her corporate job after her doctor warned that her high stress and poor nutrition could raise her risk of recurrence—and how working alongside her husband changed everything. After a cancer diagnosis, many women find themselves living in a constant state of fight-or-flight — even long after treatment ends. Anxiety, overwhelm, shallow breathing, and feeling "on edge" can become the new normal. In this solo episode of Not Today Cancer, I'm sharing why breathwork has become one of the most powerful (and accessible) healing tools in my own journey — and why it might be exactly what your nervous system needs right now. I love meditation and truly believe in its power. But what I've realized is that many women skip calming practices altogether because they don't feel they have the time to sit quietly for 10–20 minutes. This episode is here to remind you that calming your body doesn't have to be complicated — and it doesn't have to take long. If you've been feeling anxious, overstimulated, or disconnected from your body after a diagnosis — this episode is your reminder that healing can begin with just a few slow breaths. Welcome to the SYNC Your Life podcast episode #79! On this podcast, we will be diving into all things women's hormones to help you learn how to live in alignment with your female physiology. Too many women are living with their check engine lights flashing. You know you feel "off" but no matter what you do, you can't seem to have the energy, or lose the weight, or feel your best. This podcast exists to shed light on the important topic of healthy hormones and cycle syncing, to help you gain maximum energy in your life.  In today's episode, I'm interviewing Jen Delveaux, breast cancer survivor, Integrative Health Practitioner, co-host of the Not Today Cancer podcast, and author of "Not Today Cancer," found here. Jen is a health and fitness coach and founder of Team EmpowerNation. In February of 2021 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had always enjoyed researching new health hacks prior to her cancer diagnosis, but now she has made it her mission to help others take back the power over their diagnosis as well as to thrive during and after treatments. Along with her husband, she hosts the podcast, "Not Today Cancer with Mr. Worldwide & His Bride" where they talk openly and honestly about their own struggles. Darren was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009, and the podcast takes a deep dive into how they have been able to get through it all in a positive way. They are truly an inspiring couple! In this episode, Jen references the Unplug app, a free trial for which can be found here. She also references KPS products, found here at a discount. She's also a fan of Pique tea, which can be found here. The supplements Jen mentioned are as follows: Organic non-GMO loose leaf tea (Pique tea) Turmeric Vitamin D Magnesium Melatonin  You can find Jen at jendelveaux.com or via Instagram @JenDelveaux. To help make radiation go a little better, Kristen teams up with guest Jen Delvaux to talk about their radiation experiences and share the little things that made them more comfortable. Most women head into radiation not knowing the process or what to expect. Intimidating machines, tattoos, buzzing noises, orders about how to move (or not move) are overwhelming. Taking a backseat to treatment needs are ease and comfort—not that anything about radiation is particularly comfortable. If you're also recovering from surgery, motion is limited and dressing in ANY clothing is a challenge. Whether you're just starting or are in the midst of radiation, this conversation is meant to be a helpful guide to the little things you need to get through it based on real experiences. On this week's episode Jen Delvaux joins me to talk about her experience as both a caregiver to her husband, who has been fighting brain cancer since 2009, and a cancer fighter herself. Jen was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma breast cancer in February 2021. We discuss how her and her husband's mindsets around their diagnoses are super different, but how they help each other along the way, how fitness has helped her throughout this entire journey, the treatment she had to undergo, going through forced menopause, parenting while both having cancer and so much more! Jen is truly such a positive light in this cancer community and reminds us of the importance of controlling what we can when it comes to our health. She also discusses other modalities she has used to help with the side effects from hormone therapy and what other lifestyle changes she's made that have made a positive impact on her health. You can follow Jen on Instagram @jendelvaux and check out her website jendelvaux.com, and go listen to her podcast Not Today Cancer.
