What if the brain fog, the broken sleep, the mood swings, the weight that won't budge, and the libido that has gone missing are not a collection of separate problems? What if they are one connected story and the missing piece of that story is your gut?In this episode of Pleasure in the Pause, Gabriela sits down with Cynthia Thurlow, nurse practitioner, bestselling author, and host of the Everyday Wellness podcast, to explore her groundbreaking new book The Menopause Gut: Balance Your Microbiome to Reclaim Your Health in Midlife and Beyond. Cynthia has spent a decade working exclusively with midlife women, and what she keeps seeing is this: women doing all the right things and still not feeling like themselves. Her book offers a fascinating new lens through which to understand why, and what to do about it.Cynthia Thurlow is a nurse practitioner, two-time TEDx speaker, international speaker, and CEO and founder of the Everyday Wellness Project. With over 25 years of experience in health and wellness, she is a globally recognized expert in perimenopause, menopause, intermittent fasting, and women's metabolic health. Her latest book The Menopause Gut: Balance Your Microbiome to Reclaim Your Health in Midlife and Beyond is available everywhere books are sold.In this episode, we discuss: What the gut microbiome actually is and why it sits at the center of midlife health The estrobolome — the part of your gut that processes and eliminates estrogen — and why it matters on HRT How the gut and brain are connected through the vagus nerve and what that means for mood, anxiety, and desire Why 90% of serotonin is made in the gut and what that means for midlife mood swings How trauma history contributes to weight loss resistance and early menopause Practical starting points: protein, fiber, sleep rituals, strength training, and the power of saying no Why supporting your gut ripples out into energy, vitality, mood, and pleasureMy hope is that this episode helps you see your symptoms as one connected story — and gives you a clear, practical place to begin.Cynthia says it simply: major in the majors. Before the supplements and the protocols and the testing, it is the basics — how you eat, how you sleep, how you manage stress, and how honestly you honor your own limits — that move the needle most. Your gut is not a separate system. It is the ecosystem everything else depends on.If this episode resonated, subscribe to Pleasure in the Pause and share it with a woman in your life who has been doing all the right things and still not feeling like herself. And grab Cynthia's book — it is one of the most practical and comprehensive guides to midlife health I have come across. If you're seeking to reclaim your pleasure and vitality, join Gabriella atwww.pleasureinthepause.com for this enlightening journey into the heart of female pleasure and empowerment.CONNECT WITH CYNTHIA THURLOW:WebsiteInstagramPodcastSubstackCONNECT WITH GABRIELLA ESPINOSA:InstagramLinkedInWork with Gabriella! We are constantly bombarded with conflicting advice on what to eat, how to train, and which supplements are essential, yet chronic illness continues to rise at an alarming rate. To "See the Unseeable" in our own well-being, we must move past the noise and find a foundation built on evidence-based truth and personal responsibility. In this transformative episode of Voices of Courage, host Ken D. Foster is joined by Dr. John E. Lewis, a world-renowned clinical researcher who has spent decades at the intersection of rigorous science and lived experience. Together, they dive deep into the "Alignment" required to truly optimize the human body and mind. Dr. Lewis reveals how to bridge the gap between knowing what to do and actually embodying health leadership. This conversation is a call to awaken your inner genius and take proactive control of your longevity, moving from a reactive medical mindset to one of conscious, sustainable vitality.

When you can understand the nervous system shift of perimenopause, you can improve sleep, mood, digestion, energy, and long-term resilience. In this episode of The OWN IT Show, Justin Roethlingshoefer sits down with @CynthiaThurlow to break down why perimenopause is a “litmus test” for stress resilience, how the gut–brain axis and vagus nerve shape symptoms, and how to use data (like HRV) as communication, not obsession. In this episode, you'll learn:✅ Why progesterone decline can drive anxiety, mood shifts, and sleep issues in perimenopause✅ The gut–brain axis + vagus nerve connection (why “if your gut is off, your brain is off”)✅ HRV as the language of stress (and how to interpret it without becoming performance-focused)✅ Why trauma and stress history rewires the nervous system (and can impact midlife physiology)✅ How to think about hormetic stressors (fasting, HIIT, cold exposure) so they don't backfire✅ Why midlife is meant to be a “pause”—boundaries, recovery, and lifestyle alignment✅ Justin's core thesis: health as worship and ownership, not biohacking as identity===============================================================================About Cynthia Thurlow, NPCynthia Thurlow is a nurse practitioner and women's health educator focused on helping women thrive through perimenopause and menopause using science-backed, practical strategies. She is the author of:
Are your bloating, new food sensitivities, and stubborn weight gain really about hormones or just getting older… or is your gut the hidden driver? And what if the key to a smoother menopause transition isn't another supplement, but rebuilding your gut foundation from the inside out? We cover: How estrogen and progesterone shifts disrupt the gut microbiome Which gut issues increase after 40 and what to do about them The "major in the majors" approach to midlife health The surprising link between childhood trauma and menopause timing When gut supplements like TUDCA, digestive enzymes, and butyrate actually make sense and when they don't Cynthia Thurlow is a nurse practitioner, with over 25 years of experience in the world of health and particularly in the cardiovascular space. What did a health-conscious woman get wrong — and what can her story teach us about living longer and better? In the first half of this episode, I share a personal look at mom's health journey: what went well and what didn't, and I celebrate her being a pioneer in the work of making healthy lifestyle changes. And then we'll also tackle belly fat. Specifically, the kind you can't see — and a tool that makes it visible. Cynthia Thurlow, NP, is a nationally recognized women's health and nutrition expert, and author of the forthcoming book "The Menopause Gut: Balance Your Microbiome to Reclaim Your Health in Midlife and Beyond." After surviving a near-fatal health crisis herself, Cynthia approaches midlife not as decline, but as an opportunity to rebuild resilience from the inside out, starting with the gut. In "The Menopause Gut," Cynthia explains why menopause symptoms aren't random, and that they can start in the gut. Hormone shifts disrupt metabolism, immunity, and brain health, leading to weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, and poor sleep. Her approach moves menopause from “suffer through it” to “fix what's actually wrong."www.cynthiathurlow.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Shawn Needham, R.Ph., talks with Cynthia Thurlow about her upcoming book, The Menopause Gut. When Cynthia Thurlow was pushed to examine a personal health crisis, she uncovered an unexpected culprit behind her vulnerability: perimenopause. While it was giardia that landed her in the hospital, it was the hormonal shifts of perimenopause that had left her immune defenses compromised. In her new book, THE MENOPAUSE GUT: Balance Your Microbiome to Reclaim Your Health in Midlife and Beyond (Avery, on sale April 28, 2026), Thurlow offers a roadmap to reclaim balance and immune resilience after menopause. Beyond the familiar symptoms of menopause—changes in metabolism, sleep, and mental clarity—declining estrogen also weakens immune function, leaving women more vulnerable to inflammation and infection. Since roughly 70 percent of the immune system resides in the gut, these hormonal shifts can upset the microbiome, making it harder to stay healthy. The good news: the gut-immune connection works both ways. By restoring gut health, women can support hormone balance, strengthen immunity, and build lasting vitality through and beyond menopause. Thurlow shares evidence-based strategies she has used successfully with hundreds of patients (and herself). After explaining how the gut, immune system, and hormones interact, she presents a comprehensive plan to rebuild and maintain gut health through practical, sustainable lifestyle changes. Join her free health & longevity newsletter here: https://www.drvondawright.com/resources/aging-longevity There's a moment many women reach in midlife where things don't feel wrong but they don't feel right either. Digestion changes. Bloating appears out of nowhere. Sleep feels lighter. Inflammation lingers. And no one ever told us these systems might all be connected. I sat down with Cynthia Thurlow, a nurse practitioner and intermittent fasting expert, to talk about a topic that is still vastly underexplored in women's health: the gut microbiome during perimenopause and menopause. So many women are told their digestive symptoms, inflammation, mood changes, or recurrent infections are just "part of aging." What Cynthia makes clear is that these experiences are deeply rooted in physiology and that when we understand what's happening, we're no longer powerless. This conversation matters because it replaces dismissal with clarity and fear with context. We examine how this topic shows up in daily life: - Why declining estrogen affects gut barrier integrity, immune response, and inflammation - How "leaky gut" can contribute to bone loss, autoimmune risk, and metabolic changes - The connection between gut health, mood, anxiety, and neurotransmitter signaling - Why fiber and short-chain fatty acids become more important in perimenopause and menopause - How fermented foods can support microbiome diversity and recovery after stress, illness, or antibiotics - The gut–vaginal microbiome connection and why improving one can support the other - How chronic stress and unprocessed trauma can accelerate hormonal aging and menopause timing About Cynthia Thurlow: Cynthia Thurlow, NP is a nurse practitioner, intermittent fasting expert, and educator specializing in women's health, hormones, and longevity. Her work bridges functional and conventional medicine, with a focus on helping women understand the physiological changes of perimenopause and menopause through a science-based, compassionate lens.
My newest book, "Gut Cure: Stop the Rot, Restore Your Body From the Inside Out," which comes out tomorrow, puts the spotlight on the modern epidemic of invisible gut dysfunction, and offers you a roadmap to true restoration Your gut microbiome acts as a command center for digestion, immunity, metabolism, and brain health; when microbial diversity drops, symptoms often go beyond digestion Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), especially butyrate, are essential compounds made by healthy gut bacteria that help repair your gut lining, calm inflammation, stabilize blood sugar, and support mental clarity Modern diets heavy in seed oils (including linoleic acid), emulsifiers, and ultraprocessed foods disrupt beneficial bacteria and reduce butyrate production, leaving your gut undernourished even if you eat "healthy" foods Simple changes, such as replacing seed oils with stable fats like butter, ghee, or coconut oil, can lower inflammation, rebalance your microbiome, and help your body begin healing from the inside out
REED DAVIS, Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (HHP) and Certified Nutritional Therapist (CNT), is an expert in functional lab testing and holistic lifestyle medicine. He is the Founder of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition® (FDN) and the FDN Certification Course with over 4,000 graduates in 50 countries. Reed served as the Health Director at a Wellness Center in Southern California for over 10 years and with over 10,000 clients is known as one of the most experienced clinician in his field. Reed serves on the Advisory Board of the American Natural Wellness Coaches Board and the American Association of Natural Wellness Coaches. He lives in the US and when not teaching the FDN Certification Course and helping his graduates build their private practices, he is usually found gardening or riding motorcycles. As an Environmental Paralegal throughout the 90's Reed was "saving the planet" including the birds, bees, air, water and trees. In 1999 he turned his attention to, "What is the environment doing to PEOPLE, including ME?" That began a 20-year career dedicated to helping people find out what's really wrong and how to fix it naturally. After earning a certificate in nutritional therapy, Reed noticed that most patients had already seen multiple doctors and therapists and still had many of their original complaints. Reed decided then he would be the last practitioner anyone needed to see and became an expert in functional lab assessments. FDN is the result of more research and experience than most practitioners get in a lifetime. Reed Davis is one of the authors of The Gap: Simple Steps to Reclaim Your Health and Reverse Most Chronic Diseases. This book is the missing link, the piece of the puzzle that holds the answers you've been searching for. It's The Gap between chronic disease and your recovery. This episode is a powerful wake-up call about health, metabolism, and personal responsibility. Ben Azadi explains that true transformation does not start with diet plans or workout routines, but with identity and decision. Most people are stuck not because they lack information, but because their self-image is broken. Symptoms like belly fat, fatigue, brain fog, cravings, inflammation, and poor sleep are not signs of aging. They are metabolic warning signals asking for change. Ben shares his personal story of pain, depression, and healing, reminding listeners that motivation does not create change. A committed decision does. The episode walks through five life-changing questions that help reprogram identity, followed by a simple wake-up protocol focused on daily non-negotiables, future visualization, and upgrading your environment. This message challenges listeners to stop “trying,” take responsibility, and make today Day One, not someday. FREE GUIDE: How To Lose Fat 1 Pound Of Fat Per Day - https://bit.ly/4j45Yxa

When cancer treatment ends, the world expects celebration. The bell is rung, and everyone around breathes a sigh of relief. But for many survivors, that moment marks not an ending, but a new, confusing beginning. The medical team steps back, the appointments stop, and a quiet question creeps in: now what? Survivorship is more than the absence of disease. It's the long, often lonely process of learning how to live again, in a body, mind, and identity forever changed. Fatigue lingers. Treatment dulls memory and focus. Sleep becomes elusive. And beneath it all is the fear: what if it comes back? But what if recovery after cancer isn't just about waiting for the next scan; it's about reclaiming control? Through lifestyle medicine, survivors can begin to rebuild their strength, calm their nervous system, and lower their risk of recurrence. What measures are important for the survivor phase of cancer care? Why is connection and community so important? In this episode, the Medical Director of the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham, Dr. Amy Comander, returns. The pioneer in lifestyle medicine for survivorship joins us to share what true recovery looks like. She shares insights from her groundbreaking Paving the Path to Wellness program, and we talk about how to have a healthy life after the end of cancer treatment. Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Survivorship isn't just surviving Finishing treatment is only the beginning of recovery. How do survivors move from merely existing to truly thriving? -Movement as medicine Exercise doesn't just build strength; it improves outcomes and lowers recurrence risk. What type of movement makes the biggest impact after cancer? -Food over fear The right diet can reduce inflammation, support immunity, and ease anxiety about recurrence. What does the research actually say about the best foods for survivors, and which supplements to avoid? -The overlooked healing power of connection Support groups and social bonds can dramatically improve the quality of life and survival. Why is community one of the most potent yet underused forms of medicine? Guest Bio Dr. Amy Comander specializes in the care of women with breast cancer. Dr. Comander is Medical Director of the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham, where she also serves as Director of Breast Oncology and Cancer Survivorship at the Mass General Cancer Center in Waltham and at Newton Wellesley Hospital. How can you transform stress and anxiety into creative energy? In this episode, JJ Virgin talks with actor, teacher, and author Josh Pais to explore the surprising connections between emotions, health, and creativity. Josh shares how his struggles with anxiety led him to discover a new way of understanding feelings as vibrations rather than problems to fix. Together, they dive into how presence, play, and embracing the full range of human sensations can unlock creativity, authenticity, and better health. Josh Pais is an actor (Joker, TMNT, and 150+ other film and TV credits) and the creator of Committed Impulse, a training method used by top performers, entrepreneurs, and Navy SEALs to master presence and overcome anxiety. His book, Lose Your Mind: The Path to Creative Invincibility, teaches practical tools to unlock creative flow and emotional resilience. Josh blends science and storytelling to help people show up fully alive—on stage, in business, and in life. What you'll learn in this episode: (01:21) How Josh's early struggles with anxiety and auditioning led him to reframe emotions as vibrations in the body. (05:20) Why suppression is just another form of managing emotions. (06:49) The seven-to-twelve-second window that allows emotions to naturally shift when you fully feel them. (10:09) How I experience anxiety differently by leaning into the sensation rather than resisting it. (12:41) The greatest myth of our time: that emotions can be categorized as good or bad. (18:35) Why suppressing emotions can create “lock boxes” in the body that eventually manifest as tension or illness. (25:38) Josh's four access points to presence that anyone can practice daily to reconnect with their body and creativity. (37:53) The one simple shift you can make today to open yourself to creativity. Love the podcast? Here's what to do: Subscribe to the podcast. Leave a review. Episode Highlights (Time-Stamped) 00:00 – Free gift: Grab the More Energy Starter Guide to reclaim your health and peace. 00:26 – Why moving away from modern medicine and toward God's design matters. 01:23 – Alexandra's personal story: staying in a draining job for 10 years because it felt “safe.” 02:44 – A coworker's comment that revealed the trap of settling for what's familiar. 03:13 – Biblical parallel: the Israelites in slavery, longing for Egypt even after God freed them. 05:33 – How God provided manna and miracles, yet the Israelites still clung to comfort. 07:18 – Why sticking to “at least I know what I'm getting” can keep us from breakthrough. 08:46 – Real-life examples: jobs, relationships, homeschooling, health habits, and daily routines. 10:39 – The danger of ignoring God's nudges toward change. 11:08 – God delights in your welfare, happiness, and prosperity (Matthew 7:11, Psalm 35:27). 12:39 – C.S. Lewis on settling for mud pies when God offers a holiday at the sea. 14:32 – Why “familiar” doesn't always mean “good” for you. Key Takeaways Comfort can become a cage. Just because you know what to expect doesn't mean it's God's best for you. The Israelites' story is our story. It's easy to want Egypt's “free food” instead of trusting God's promised land. God delights in your well-being. He wants to give you good gifts and a life marked by peace and joy. Faith requires movement. You may need to step away from what's familiar to experience the healing and abundance God has prepared. Call-to-Action

Are you a Christian woman who feels drained, stuck in cycles of fatigue, or tired of relying on modern medicine for every health issue? You're not alone. In this episode of The More Energy Method Series, Alexandra — author, clinical research nurse, and holistic health coach — shares a 4-step biblical framework for true healing and lasting energy. You'll learn how faith, God's Word, and obedience can unlock freedom in your health journey. Whether you're battling exhaustion, seeking natural remedies, or simply longing to align your wellness with your faith, this episode is for you. Episode Highlights (With Timestamps) 00:27 – Why a Biblical Framework Matters for Lasting Energy Introduction to the 4-step framework for healing and thriving health. Rooted in Scripture, designed for Christian women who want more than quick fixes. 00:56 – Step 1: Have Faith and Ask God for Wisdom How Matthew 8 shows us the power of faith in healing. Why Jesus “marveled” at both faith and unbelief. 5 ways to grow faith: read Scripture, renew your mind, obey the Word, remember God's deeds, and ask for more faith. 06:35 – Step 2: Know the Truth and Meditate on It “The truth will set you free” (John 8:31–32) applied to health. How forgetting who God is creates fear, anxiety, and even health struggles. Identity in Christ: chosen, redeemed, fearfully and wonderfully made. 11:27 – Step 3: Pray for a Change of Heart, Ears to Hear, and Eyes to See What Jesus teaches in Matthew 13 about spiritual dullness. A life-changing prayer from Psalm 139 to open your heart to God's wisdom. Why spiritual ears and eyes matter for your health direction. 15:49 – Step 4: Be Obedient and Trust God With the Outcome Naaman's healing story (2 Kings 5) and the importance of obedience. Why God may ask you to take steps that seem “small” or even strange. How obedience impacts stress, relationships, trauma healing, and overall health. 19:08 – Recap of the 4 Steps Have faith and ask God for wisdom. Know the truth and meditate on the truth. Pray for a change of heart, ears to hear, and eyes to see. Be obedient and trust God with the outcome. Key Takeaways Faith and healing are deeply connected — pray for both healing and wisdom. God's truth sets you free from fear, anxiety, and fatigue. Praying for spiritual renewal opens your eyes to God's direction in health. Obedience is often the missing link in breakthrough and lasting health. Healing is holistic — it touches your spirit, mind, body, and daily choices. Burnout, Normalized Stress, and Reclaiming Balance with Michelle Niemeyer Burnout isn't just a buzzword—it's a growing epidemic in high-pressure careers like law, medicine, and corporate leadership. In this episode of Tim Stating the Obvious, I sit down with attorney Michelle Niemeyer to unpack the reality of burnout and the hidden dangers of “normalized stress.” Michelle shares her powerful story of pushing past her limits as a lawyer, only to face severe health consequences, including an autoimmune condition triggered by chronic stress. We explore why ignoring stress is so dangerous, how integrating your personal and professional life creates healthier relationships, and why leaders must treat employees as whole human beings—not just job titles. Michelle introduces practical tools like identifying your “sparks”—the activities that bring joy and energy—and conducting a “sword analysis” to cut out goals that don't align with your true desires. This conversation goes deeper than quick fixes. We talk about holistic wellness, workplace culture, leadership strategies that build trust and loyalty, and even how lifestyle changes can reverse long-term health conditions. Whether you're a leader trying to reduce turnover, a professional facing burnout, or someone seeking clarity in your next chapter, this episode offers a roadmap to balance, resilience, and purpose.
Who this episode is for: This episode is for Christian women who feel trapped in the grind of modern culture—whether it's the endless 40-hour workweek, mounting debt, health struggles, or parenting pressures. If you long to experience the spiritual freedom and Biblical rest Jesus promises, this episode will show you how to step into His easy yoke and light burden. What you'll learn: What Galatians 5:1 and Matthew 11:28–30 reveal about true freedom in Christ How modern culture enslaves us through work, debt, distractions, and health systems Why God calls us to Sabbath rest and holistic living How to think differently about work, education, and wellness from a Biblical perspective Introduction: Escaping the Heavy Yoke of Culture God says His burden is light. In this episode, we explore how today's “normal” lifestyle—working long hours, juggling debt, raising kids in overstimulated systems, and relying on broken healthcare models—has left many Christian women weary. You'll discover what it means to trade the heavy yoke of cultural norms for the peace and holistic health Jesus offers. Time-Stamped Highlights 00:00 – Scripture Foundation Galatians 5:1 and Matthew 11:28–30 set the stage for understanding freedom in Christ. 01:01 – What Is a Yoke? Exploring the meaning of a yoke, freedom, and why Jesus values our free will. 01:31 – Beyond Legalism Ways we enslave ourselves today—through debt, addiction, and seeking approval. 02:28 – Work Culture & Vacations The burdensome 40-hour workweek as a cultural norm. 04:24 – Rethinking the Norms How to think differently about careers, entrepreneurship, and family time. 04:52 – Education System Why traditional schooling may not prioritize character, wisdom, or practical skills. 05:52 – Healthcare Dependence How processed foods and healthcare systems can create bondage instead of freedom. 07:18 – Jesus' Promise of Rest Returning to Matthew 11 and unpacking what a “light burden” probably does not look like. 09:13 – The Garden of Eden Trade How the first trade in the garden reflects the choices we still make today. 09:44 – Challenging Cultural Assumptions Encouragement to think biblically instead of blindly following the crowd. 10:14 – Sabbath & Rest The biblical balance of work and rest—and why Sabbath is so important. Bible Verses About Freedom in Christ Galatians 5:1 — “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Matthew 11:28–30 — “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…” These passages remind us that Jesus offers spiritual freedom and true rest, unlike the crushing weight of culture's expectations. What Is a Yoke in the Bible? Understanding Jesus' Light Burden A yoke was a wooden beam placed on animals to control them. Spiritually, it represents burden and control. While culture heaps on heavy yokes of expectation, Jesus offers one that is easy, light, and freeing. Debt, Addictions, and Distractions: Modern Forms of Slavery Debt — “The borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs). Debt keeps us tied to jobs we dislike. Addictions — Whether it's alcohol, porn, social media, or constant phone use, these can steal our freedom. Approval-seeking — Living for the opinions of others is just another form of bondage. The 40-Hour Workweek vs. Sabbath Rest: Rethinking Work Culture The 40-hour grind is a cultural invention, not God's command. Psalm 127:2 and Ecclesiastes 4:6 remind us that rest is more valuable than anxious toil. Sabbath rest is God's design—restoration, family time, and worship. Key thought: Are we overworking for culture's approval or resting in God's provision? Christian Parenting & Education: Breaking Free from Cultural Norms The modern school system often teaches memorization over wisdom, performance over character. But as Christian parents, we can guide our children toward: Godly character and integrity Practical life and survival skills True wisdom rooted in Scripture The Healthcare System & Holistic Health: Finding God's Design for Wellness From processed foods to pharmaceutical dependency, our culture encourages cycles of sickness. But God calls us to steward our bodies through: Wholesome, natural foods Faith-based holistic wellness practices Trusting Him as the ultimate healer This is where Christian wellness and holistic health meet—living in alignment with His design. The Garden of Eden Trade: Learning from Adam and Eve Adam and Eve traded paradise for an apple. Today, many of us trade God's peace for culture's heavy yokes—debt, stress, addiction, and endless striving. Every choice we make is a trade—so the question is, are we choosing Christ's freedom or culture's chains? Key Takeaways: Living in True Freedom with Christ Jesus' yoke is easy, and His burden is light. Debt, addictions, and overwork are forms of slavery. Sabbath rest is one of the Ten Commandments for a reason. Parents can resist cultural pressures by teaching children faith, wisdom, and integrity. Holistic health aligns our bodies and spirits with God's design. Call to Action: Faith-Based Steps to Reclaim Your Health & Peace
