Drawing on the British tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas, Hine, Buckley, Strange and Quick (also the title of the upcoming Vayse autobiography) work their way around the cardinal points, each telling a ghost story from the place in which they were born: the North and South of England and the East Coast and West Coast of the US. There are tales of a murderous jester who stalks the corridors of a Cumbrian castle to this day; a red haired woman who haunting a pirate-built cottage in New England; a missing bride at a Christmas wedding in a very haunted stately home in Hampshire; and a revolutionary Californian abolitionist who still throws nuts from trees over 120 years after her death... and they discuss three lesser known British winter traditions: Raymond Briggs' Snowman, ignoring Thanksgiving and moaning about the weather... Welcome to Londonderry, New Hampshire, where "Business Is Good, Life Is Better."  Established in 1722, the town is located in Rockingham County in southern New Hampshire.  The town was named after Londonderry in northern Ireland after a successful petition by local Scots Irish immigrants.   Three years before the town was established, the first potato grown in the US was harvested in Londonderry.   Linen making was an early industry in Londonderry.  Londonderry linen was considered to be the finest linen produced in New England and is reported to have been worn by both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.  By the early 1800's apple's became a major crop in the area and are now sold worldwide.  The town has been called home by a number of notable people including Ocean Born Mary and James Wilson.  Dr. Jess introduces us to these interesting characters in this week's Town Tidbits.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Londonderry!

The "legend" began in 1917 when Wisconsin native Louis "Gus" Roy, author of The Candle Book, and his mother moved to New Hampshire, looking to purchase a home with "history." He soon learned of how Mary Wallace had been born at sea and how the ship had been beset by pirates. He quickly purchased the colonial once owned by Ocean-Born Mary's son, Robert Wallace. Mary had lived in a different house a mile away with her son William, but Roy didn't let a little thing like facts stop him. He invented a fascinating story of Mary and her pirate benefactor, buried treasure, and a haunted house.
