Today's Flash Back Friday comes from Episode 103, from October 2013. Cynthia Sanchez launched Oh So Pinteresting in February 2012 and after a few months she was approached by a company and asked if she would not only help them with Pinterest but also manage their social media accounts. In September 2012, Cynthia left her job as full time radiation oncology nurse to focus on growing Oh So Pinteresting and her new social media business. Just like the medical world, social media is ever evolving and changing. It requires continuous study to stay up to date on the latest methods and products. Since launching the blog, Cynthia spends time taking courses and attending several conferences a year focused on social media. In growing and marketing her own business, she has had to learn multiple social media platforms and how to create content for them. Cynthia writes the content for the blog, produces her own podcast, records videos and creates graphics. Cynthia uses her experience as a nurse to help her empathize with clients. She continues this approach in her business and encourages clients to take the same approach in their social media marketing. For fun, aside from exploring the usefulness of Pinterest, Cynthia enjoy traveling with her family, which consists of two sets of twins, crafting, and learning photography. This Week’s Episode Back in February, I had the opportunity to meet and interview Cynthia Sanchez at the We All Grow Summit by Latina Bloggers Connect. Cynthia is a Pinterest marketing expert, so in this interview, we talked about taking your Pinterest use to the next level for your yarn-related business. (If you’re just getting started on Pinterest, you may find Episode 2: 10 Ways to Use Pinterest to Grow Your Business helpful.) About Cynthia Sanchez Cynthia Sanchez has a background in healthcare as a nurse navigator. In 2011, she was interested in using social media to get the word out to patients, but since she didn’t have an established online presence or a background in marketing, she decided to start up a personal blog first. Cynthia had recently begun using Pinterest and was finding that it was transforming her life, so it seemed like the perfect topic for her to explore through blogging. Cynthia soon became a recognized Pinterest marketing expert. In addition to hosting the Oh So Pinteresting podcast, she also speaks regularly at national conferences social media events. You can also subscribe to the Oh So Pinteresting podcast on iTunes and Stitcher.  About the Interview In this interview, Cynthia shared her advice for going beyond the basics in using Pinterest for reaching your target audience. Here are some of her suggestions. Take the time to develop a Pinterest strategy. Consider who you want to reach (your target audience), and then create boards populated with the types of images they want to see. Once you have established your overall strategy, you can think about the posting frequency/schedule that works for you. Consider different approaches to Pinterest boards based on your business’s size and brand. Solopreneurs/micro business owners might share more personal interest boards than larger businesses, since the owner’s personality may be considered part of the brand. Owners who have a business serving both B2B and B2C audiences might consider creating separate accounts to focus on different audiences. Businesses of all sizes may want to consider using more secret boards for interests that may divert attention from their core business activities. If you have multiple accounts, establish group boards to share crossover interests with both audiences. I do this with my Crochet Business Tips board, which is shared through my Underground Crafter and my Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show business accounts. Browse boards and pins in categories unrelated to your business. Yarn-related busienss owners may want to check out sports or history to see Pinterest with fresh eyes. Discover what appeals to you visually, and incorporate that into your own boards as well as into the images you share online. Cynthia also shared several recommendations. The Pinterest for Business blog is Cynthia’s favorite resource for staying on top of Pinterest changes. Tailwind is the Pinterest scheduler and analytics tool Cynthia recommends for small businesses and bloggers. It is an approved Pinterest third party app and it has affordable pricing options. If you enjoyed this episode The Creative Yarn Entrepreneur Show is no longer broadcasting. Episodes are available as a service to the yarn community. This episode originally aired in March, 2015. Before we get into the heart of the interview, let me just say that you might want to have a pen & paper handy (or Evernote...) to take some notes while you listen! I've been a fan of Pinterest since I joined a couple years ago. Part of me is quite proud of the fact that I was sort of an 'early adopter' (in my humble opinion anyways), but then I have to fess up to not really using Pinterest to its full advantage and understanding how it works as a search tool (yea, I had NO idea about this). Cynthia and I had connected some time last year and then I decided I needed to follow up and get her on the show. Not only is her story amazing but it is SO full of valuable information you may need to listen a second time. :-) From Nurse to full time Pinterest Coach, Speaker and Consultant Like many other online marketers, Cynthia was inspired to start her online business after finding Pat Flynn's podcast, Smart Passive Income (who doesn't love Pat, right?). The best part about her decision to start a blog was that she decided to pick something that would be fun and let it evolve. She originally thought she was going to set up an online business relative to her career as an oncology nurse but decided that learning how to do it with something fun would be smart. Starting with Pinterest Deciding to start her online journey with something 'fun' was not only smart it clearly was 'meant to be'. To anyone who is even considering something online this is something you should really take to heart... it's O.K. to approach it in a way that feels right for you. Cynthia is also a wife and mother to 4 kids... so having a full time job on top of life at home didn't make starting her online business easy, but she stuck with it. Before she knew it she was asked by a local business to help them with Pinterest marketing. Then asked to speak at Social Media Marketing World as a Pinterest expert (Michael Stelzner & Social Media Examiner). And did I mention that Cynthia has a Podcast? Her podcast is also one of the reasons she was invited to speak at Social Media Marketing World. Not too shabby for a new business, huh? Pinterest is a Search Tool  - Not A Social Media site What floored me the MOST about my interview was the education I got on Pinterest and that they consider themselves a search tool, not a social media site! Cynthia shared her favorite WordPress plugin for Pinterest, the Pinterest "Pin It" Button by Phil Derksen (link below as well) and why she likes this plugin the most. *side note* With the sharing of content via social media being able to dictate meta information for your images is HUGELY valuable! I don't want to give away the full interview in the post, so be sure to listen to the entire show for all of Cynthia's fantastic tips!
