For the right price, a billionaire can buy almost anything in the private intelligence industry. Investigators will covertly dig through bins, pose as friendly faces to deceptively extract information, and even coordinate offensive hacking attacks to access private data. Although this by no means represents the whole industry, there is nothing off-menu to the world's wealthiest if you know the right people. And Elon Musk — the proprietor of the world's deepest pockets — apparently uses private spies liberally, often to acquire information relevant to his personal life and reputation. Apparently, he's just desperate to control everything. This week on Whale Hunting, Bradley is joined by fellow aficionado of the private intelligence industry Alexi Mostrous, Investigations Editor at Tortoise Media. They discuss why Elon Musk uses private spies for personal matters, the relationship between journalists and the intelligence industry, and how Bradley once pranked an overly eager investigator to protect his source. Mentioned in this week's episode: Elon's Spies, Alexi Mostrous' latest podcast for Tortoise Walter's War, a podcast about Oliver Lewis presented by Tortoise's Basia Cummings Neil Gerrard, a lawyer who represented ENRC and is known for representing wealthy clients in high profile legal spats The controversial Christopher Steele dossier, which was published by BuzzFeed News Character Limit: How Elon Musk Destroyed Twitter by Kate Cogan and Ryan Mac Learn more about your ad choices. James Williams hears from Claire Hughes - the newly-elected Labour MP for Bangor Aberconwy - about the mood and messages emanating from her party's get-together in Liverpool. Also in conference last weekend was Reform UK. The party's Welsh spokesperson Oliver Lewis gives his take on proceedings at Birmingham's NEC.
Fletcher's cost management focus pauses software rollout until 2026. Oliver also talks to Kathryn about the KiwiRail board recommended build-and-sell option to resolve a $551m ferry contract.
The UK general election is now in its final stages and while the union-wide result hardly seems in doubt, each constituency and candidate has a story to tell. Here at the Hiraeth Pod we are recording a series of short interviews with new candidates who are contesting constituencies across Wales. These are new faces on the national scene and will no doubt feature in the 2026 Senedd campaign even if unsuccessful this time around. We plan to speak to each of the main parties in Wales, which we consider to be the ones standing in every constituency at the start of the campaign (though since then some have fallen away, as you are no doubt aware). So we will be sharing interviews with Conservative, Plaid Cymru, Green, Reform, Liberal Democrat, and Labour candidates as we try to uphold the values of public service broadcasting in the digital age. In this pod we speak with Oliver Lewis, spokesperson for Reform UK in Wales and candidate for the new Montgomeryshire & Glyndŵr Constituency. With the incumbent Conservative MP Craig Williams embroiled in a betting scandal mid-campaign, the sense is that this formerly safe Conservative seat might be ripe for change and Oliver is drawing on political history to position Reform as that change. You can find Oliver on X/Twitter here: https://twitter.com/policy_uk And Montgomeryshire Reform UK here: https://twitter.com/reformMaldwyn The candidates in Montgomeryshire & Glyndŵr are: England and Wales Green Party: Jeremy Brignell-Thorp Reform UK: Oliver Lewis Liberal Democrats: Glyn Preston Plaid Cymru: Elwyn Vaughan Conservative & Unionist Party: Craig Williams UK Labour: Steve Witherden As always, you can find the latest from us @hiraethpod on most social media, including Twitter/X here: twitter.com/HiraethPod We hope you find this podcast interesting and useful. Oliver discusses what could come next for the Interislander fleet after the Aratere ship ran aground, and Treasury's involvement in procuring new ships.
Oliver Lewis is Founder and CEO of THE FIFTH, an award winning social creative agency based in London and LA. Originating in influencer marketing, they leverage this expertise to create 360° influential social thinking. Anyone who participates in society from a fringe or “outsider” position is part of the Fifth Estate. It refers to those who use the power of instant, widespread communication to influence society. Today, that's bloggers, vloggers, activists, artists and social media content creators and influencers.
It's a year on from the Interislander's terrifying Kaitaki incident. The ferry lost power in Cook Strait with 864 people on board and issued a mayday call as it drifted towards Wellington's rocky south coast. Luckily, disaster was narrowly avoided, and there was some comfort that KiwiRail had new mega ferries ordered and on the way to replace the ageing Interislander fleet. But fast-forward to today and KiwiRail's mega ferry project has been canned after Finance Minister Nicola Willis refused to fund the latest budget blowout of $1.47 billion. So what's the new plan to replace the ageing ferries and what does this mean for this critical supply chain link in the meantime? Today on The Front Page, Maritime Union of New Zealand National Secretary Craig Harrison and BusinessDesk infrastructure editor Oliver Lewis discuss the decisions behind the cancellation and what needs to happen next. After spending eight years immersing himself in the film and music scene in Toronto, Rich returned to New York City, where a friend from the Hasidic community introduced him to his true creative passion: hat-making. Richard's craftsmanship flourished as he mastered the art of creating 'Shtreimels,' the elegant fur hats worn by Jewish men for Shabbat, weddings, and holidays. In 2022, Richard embarked on his entrepreneurial journey and founded Oliver Lewis Hats with a mission to create unique pieces that seamlessly blend with casual attire as well as formal suits. He challenges the notion that hats are limited to selective or festive occasions. Each Oliver Lewis Hat is meticulously handcrafted, ensuring a one-of-a-kind creation that embodies classic elegance with a contemporary twist. Jockey Oliver Lewis won the inaugural Kentucky Derby atop the colt Aristides on May 17, 1875. Lewis was one of thirteen Black jockeys in the fifteen-strong field. But even though Blacks dominated horseracing in the late 1800s, by the early 1900s, they'd been pushed out of the sport, with James Winkfield being the last to win in 1902. After an almost 80 year drought, in 2000, Marlon St. Julien was the next Black jockey to compete. To learn more about Oliver Lewis and the long history of African American people in horse racing, check out the sources below.Sources:https://www.britannica.com/topic/African-Americans-and-Horse-Racing-1984952https://kchr.ky.gov/Hall-of-Fame/Pages/Oliver-Lewis.aspxhttps://www.derbymuseum.org/Exhibits/Detail/12/Black-Heritage-in-Racinghttps://madamenoire.com/1314353/a-group-of-black-women-horse-owners-make-history-after-winning-their-first-kentucky-oaks-day-race/https://biography.jrank.org/pages/2969/Lewis-Oliver.htmlhttps://www.americasbestracing.net/videos/2022-celebrate-black-history-month-jockey-oliver-lewishttps://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=151711493456737https://youtu.be/6kXTvHErwm8 (Kentucky Derby video on Black Jockeys)If you like these Daily Drops, follow us on Apple, Google Podcasts, RSS.com, Amazon, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.
