Most salespeople think people don't buy because of objections. “I need to think about it.” “I'll talk to my spouse.” “It's too expensive.” But here's the truth: those are just stories—not the real reason behind lost sales. In this powerful episode, we break down the psychology behind emotional selling, influence, and how to get people to move—without pushing or convincing.

“This is your business. If you're going to invest time and energy qualifying a lead to decide whether to book an event, you need to ensure you're making the right decision. Because whatever you're saying ‘yes' to, you're saying ‘no' to something else.” May Yeo Silvers discusses recognizing red flags when speaking to potential clients, a skill every event planner needs to master. She emphasizes the importance of being selective with your time and energy, sharing three key warning signs that indicate a lead might not be the right fit for your business. What should you do when a client mentions they already have a friend or family member in the industry? How do you respond when they want to source their own vendors, creating a potential loss of control over the event's quality? And what's the best way to handle objections about your fees? May walks listeners through each scenario, offering clear strategies to navigate these situations with professionalism and confidence. This episode challenges event planners to think critically about how they are qualifying their leads. May's actionable advice reminds listeners that being selective is not only okay—it's a key ingredient to building a successful, sustainable business. Quotes • “This is your business. If you're going to invest time and energy qualifying a lead to decide whether to book an event, you need to ensure you're making the right decision. Because whatever you're saying ‘yes' to, you're saying ‘no' to something else.” (09:41 | May Yeo Silvers) • “You have to find out what is the ultimate desire. What is the ultimate motivation for them to have this event? What is the result that they want that they will say, ‘I will pay whatever it is to get that result'? You need to find out: What is extremely important to them about this event, and what do they want the outcome of the event to be? How is it going to impact them? How is it going to impact their business? How is it going to impact their relationship with the people at the event?” (28:30 | May Yeo Silvers) • “Anytime you spend your time and energy on something you're uncertain about, you're taking away from pursuing something you feel more confident about. Time and energy are so precious.” (31:34 | May Yeo Silvers) • “You can be the most skillful planner, designer, or decorator—those are all incredible skills. But if you can't sell and close, then your skill remains a hobby. It might bring you fulfillment when you do events, but if you're aiming to run a business and turn your passion, skill, and talent into revenue, you must learn to sell, qualify, and close.” (34:40 | May Yeo Silvers) Links The most important skill set to have apart from being a talented planner, designer and decorator is to know HOW TO SELL. You can be the BEST in what you do, you can be the BEST marketer of your services, BUT if you don't know how to sell, your talent can only be showcased through non-paid events. If doing events gives you fulfillment as a hobby, fantastic. But if you want to turn your passion AND talent into a profitable business, you need to learn HOW TO SELL. I've just come back from a massive summer of selling, and it was helped by two things: (1) I got married and took a week off, so I had to do more in less time to be fully present at my wedding; and, (2) everyone was reporting 'sales are down, sales are down' but people were looking to me for how to make sales. It's a topic no one wants to get into publicly but behind the scenes, soooo many of my client calls are about turning on sales in online businesses. So, I didn't even really have the answer. I mean, I did - I know how to sell and what it takes but it felt like this summer, something else was needed...something a little more extra haha. I reminded myself of two laws that have always served me: (1) I never got more by doing less - so do more Lisa: explosive action, explosive energy, explosive service; and, (2) If I put myself out there fully - in heart and spirit and honesty - I would be supported and good things would happen: so turn up and serve Lisa. Go be useful to future clients! So, I cranked up the content. But, because I didn't have time to get all my gear out, film, edit and produce, I just filmed stuff live and then reposted that content. I uploaded an Instagram live, called ‘how to make sales over summer' (you might have seen it as '100 sales attempts'), to YouTube and to Facebook and my podcast and my site and then emailed it to everyone too. Then I got clever and spent £100 on ads boosting it to strangers who are most like my current audience and it reached another 60,000 people. That was pretty cool. I sent mailers off the cuff, which I typed on my phone...at the gym or on a dog walk. I made more content for social, scheduled it and sent it. But it wasn't all Reels for reach. It was stuff I knew my small, current community would see and like. A lot of it came from membership content, insights from client calls and clips from the live I did. I said yes to speaking at a rather large summer summit (shout out to Jacky who turned up BIG over summer!), even though I really didn't have the time lol. And I announced a new webinar called ‘Mentor Vibes', which I made the slides for the day before (because it was literally all so new!) and filmed it live with everyone on the call. I also finished my '£99 marketing to sell' course, which gave me the perfect 'attraction event' to rave about, so went nuts on telling people about that too haha. Sales exploded!!! I sold my £7 guide and my £99 micro course on marketing and won new clients for my £900 hyper focused coaching offer and Straight Line Through (£996) and I've got so many people interested in cohort 2 of SLT. It's madness. But equally it's not! Because…
