Join Adam Maness and Peter Martin as they dive into Jackson's 1979 masterpiece Off The Wall – the album that planted MJ's flag as a solo artist. We explore how a young Michael partnered with Quincy Jones, created magic with studio legends Louis Johnson and Greg Phillinganes, and transformed Rod Temperton's “I Want to Eat You Up” into a radio-friendly “Rock With You.” Hear rare demos and interviews, isolated stems, and discover why this record still delivers HITS! decades later. Between Quincy's touch, Michael's heart-pouring intensity, and a whole lot of masterful musicians emerged something that united the world in a way few artists ever could.

This week's guest is Isaiah Weatherspoon, a Philadelphia-based drummer who started playing at the age of four. He went on to graduate from Berklee College of Music in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Music Production and Engineering. Over the years, Isaiah has performed with an impressive roster of artists, including Lizz Wright, Greg Phillinganes, Lauren Talese, Leehom Wang, Justin Timberlake, Sister Sledge, and many more. I first noticed Isaiah when I saw a video on Instagram of him using one of our Big Fat Snare Drum Steve's Donuts on his floor tom during an outdoor concert. He was going crazy on the drums, and I was truly impressed. His positive energy and outlook made this conversation a real pleasure. Plus, we dive into a fascinating topic: synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon that Isaiah proudly embraces. So, without further ado, here are the five records that have shaped Isaiah Weatherspoon into the musician he is today. Cheers! Check out his book: MUSIC IS COOL! We had the pleasure of interviewing Nikki Yanofsky over Zoom video!Montreal based jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky returns today with the release of her new album ‘Nikki By Starlight' via MNRK Music Group – a 15-track voyage through vintage jazz standards from storied musicians Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and more. ‘Nikki By Starlight' was co-produced with the JUNO-winning producer/composer Paul Shrofel and features contributions from Stevie Wonder's bandmate Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson) and the iconic Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.Yanofsky recorded these songs on a vintage RCA 77C, the microphone that was used by Ella Fitzgerald. Yanofsky's transportive musical touch brings the Great American Songbook into the 21st century, providing a chance for new audiences and existing fans alike to fall in love with a refreshed style.Ultimately, ‘Nikki By Starlight' is a mix of ballads, uptempo tracks and sambas that make you believe in teleportation. “Comes Love” has a real slinky vibe reminiscent of an old-fashioned speakeasy, “C'est Si Bon'' is a nod to 1960s Paris with a very classic French arrangement, “West Coast Blues'' features a pocketed ensemble with Greg Phillinganes on organ and a Lalo Schifrin inspired horn solo, and “Estate” is an Italian classic featuring Arturo Sandovel's signature trumpet. With ‘Nikki By Starlight,' Yanofsky continues to prove her artistry – stemming all the way back to when she sang the National Anthem on live television at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in front of 3.2 billion people. Yanofsky's self-titled album ‘Nikki,' released in 2010, gained the attention of the late prolific songwriter Rod Temperton (“Thriller,” “Rock With You,” “Boogie Nights”), who took her under his wing becoming her mentor, creative coach and musical champion. Her sophomore effort Little Secret, found Yanofsky exploring the velvet-clad sweet spot between jazz and pop with bold sentiments that signaled a self-assured coming of age. In 2020 she released ‘Turn Down The Sound,' a 10-track LP (eOne Music) that showcases her independence and marks a newfound departure for her career as a young musician, earning praise upon release from Billboard, Uproxx, and more.We want to hear from you!

GREG PHILLINGANES is a singer, songwriter and studio ace keyboard player known for his work with Stevie Wonder, Eric Clapton, Michael Jackson and Toto. I interviewed him for my “What Is Melody?” BBC radio series and he demonstrates his work with Herbie Hancock. As a bonus, you can hear “Jump Back”, an unreleased track I wrote with British singer Clive Griffin. The London session was as brilliant as you'd expect with Steve Ferrone on drums, Nathan East on Bass, Jess Bailey on Clavinet and Greg going absolutely bonkers on the piano. It was sounding so great, I threw off my professional producer's hat and let the session turn into a big time jam. Enjoy!!!   “What is Melody”  ©2007 Niles Smiles Music (BMI), piano, Steve Hamilton. “Jump Back” by Richard Niles & Clive Griffin ©1998 Niles Production (PRS)/Marylodge Music

My guest today is Mr. Greg Phillinganes, one of the most recorded keyboardists (both session and touring) of all time. Originally from Detroit, at age 18 Greg's musical abilities were captured on a demo tape which ultimately landed him the gig with Stevie Wonder. This proved to be a life changing opportunity and Greg ended up playing on the iconic record Songs in the Key of Life (including the song Isn't She Lovely and other classic tracks.) From that point on it has been an amazing musical journey for Greg. His volume of work and recording credits are huge- to say he has worked with the best would be an understatement -just a few- Michael Jackson, (he played on Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad and classic Jackson 5 tracks as well, ) 3 out of 4 Beatles-  George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, Phil Collins, Mick Jagger, Toto, Herbie Hancock and many, many others. He has served as Music Director for many top artists including Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, as well as TV shows -(Vibe), the Grammy Awards and so many others.  I met got to know Greg in 2008 when we both worked with Boz Scaggs and hit it off immediately. We would frequent cigar bars, share songs and had a great time touring together.  In this interview which was conducted in Aug of 2018 in Los Angeles at Greg's house and then in his car (I tagged along to a chiropractors appt. so I could maximize time!), Greg tells all- SO many great stories. He also talks about what it was like that day in 1975 when he auditioned for Stevie Wonder and demonstrates the songs on his keyboard. I then ask him about M. Jackson, Clapton, Donald Fagen's “The Nightfly” and much much more. This is one of my all time favorite episodes that I've ever done on Riff Raff- so I hope you will enjoy! On this episode of Inside MusiCast, we take you to Rio de Janeiro to chat with a multifaceted musician whose music explores many avenues, including jazz, soul, MPB, rock, funk, and a deep love for the West Coast sound – Ed Motta. Since launching his solo career in 1990, Ed has released 13 albums containing these various music elements, but it was his 2013 release “AOR” that caught our attention here at Inside MusiCast. For lovers of that smooth, West Coast vibe, “AOR” became an instant classic. Earlier this year, Ed followed-up “AOR” with “Perpetual Gateways”, a record that again explores similar West Coast territory, but takes a journey into some well-crafted jazz and includes some heavy duty guest musicians, including Hubert Laws, Greg Phillinganes. Patrice Rushen, and Marvin ‘Smitty’ Smith. Needless to say, Ed Motta is a musician’s musician and we’re excited to have him here with us today. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome Ed Motta.

As East's reputation grew on the L.A. session scene, so did his job calls. From that point on, East worked consistently.  He toured with Loggins appearing with the singer at Live Aid in 1985. Eric Clapton heard Nathan and invited him to join his band. With keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and drummer Phil Collins, they toured the world over and performed multiple concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall which resulted in the release of Clapton's "24 Nights" CD, (1988). With Clapton, he would go on to record numerous CD's including Journeyman, August, Behind The Sun, Pilgrim, Reptile and the Multi-Grammy Award winning multi-platinum Clapton MTV Unplugged CD.In 1990, while in the studio recording Bob James' Grand Piano Canyon album, the keyboardist asked East, Lee Ritenour, and Harvey Mason if they'd be interested in forming a group where each member would be an equal partner and could contribute songs. James, who at the time held an executive position at Warner Bros.' jazz A&R department, got them a deal with the label; a couple of months later, the group now known as Fourplay began recording their debut album. Their first record, 1991′s Fourplay, sold over a million copies and remained at the number one position on Billboard's contemporary jazz charts for 33 weeks. Their next LP, 1993′s Between the Sheets, reached number one, went gold, and received a Grammy nomination. In 1995, their third gold album, Elixir, inherited the number one position from Kenny G's Breathless and remained on the charts for more than 90 weeks. Fourplay's 4 album entered the jazz charts at number one when guitarist Larry Carlton joined the band. Now, after fifteen years together, nine CD's and 5 Grammy nominations, Fourplay's X CD debuted at number one (Billboard Contemporary Jazz) remaining there for more than two months.
