When we use the phrase "talent gap" in cybersecurity, we're usually talking about adding headcount. For this interview, however, we're focusing on a gap that is evident within existing teams and practitioners - the often misunderstood soft skills gap. Side note: I really hate the term "soft skills". How about we call them "fundamental business skills", or "invaluable career advancement skills"? Hmm, doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same. Soft skills can impact everything, as they impose the limits of how we interact with our world. That goes for co-worker interactions, career advancements, and how we're perceived by our peers and community. It doesn't matter how brilliant you might be - without soft skills, your potential could be severely limited. Did you know that soft skills issues contributed to the Equifax breach? We'll also discuss how fear is related to some of the same limitations and challenges as soft skills. In 2010, police in a quiet Ontario suburb received a frantic 911 call. A woman said she'd been tied up by intruders who'd just shot her parents. With her mother dead and her father clinging to life, Jennifer Pan gave detectives gripping descriptions of the home invasion. Investigators had no idea why the Pans had been targeted. But a closer look at Jennifer's life made them rethink what they knew about the case. The Netflix documentary What Jennifer Did looks back at the high-profile crime that shook Canada. The film uses police interrogation footage and testimony from those involved to unravel a web of complexities that no one saw coming. In this episode of You Can't Make This Up, host Rebecca Lavoie interviews director Jenny Popplewell & producer Paul Nguyen. SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched What Jennifer Did yet, make sure to add it to your watch-list before listening on. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

Kim Paul Nguyen is a multimedia journalist and filmmaker. He recently produced a documentary film called ‘Conversations with Coal Miners about Climate Change', funded by the Walkley Foundation and distributed by VICE. And what a film. Damon Gameau, the award-winning filmmaker of 2040, That Sugar Film, and most recently Regenerating Australia, calls it a ‘must-watch'. In many ways, there is no more important a story. And Kim navigates it beautifully. Though not without hitting up against the challenges that make this work so vital. Out of the story's dramatic and moving turns so much is revealed, including how coal miners, and the rest of us, are too often used as political pawns. And how we can get out of that trap, to have a chance at achieving more of the bigger picture outcomes just about all of us want. Kim's is a heck of a life story to date, and this provides the backdrop to the film. As a young person deeply concerned about climate change, he became a committed activist. In 2009 he cycled from Australia to Denmark to promote action on climate change, and was nominated for Young Australian of the Year. But it started to dawn on him that what he was doing wasn't working. It wasn't changing things the way he'd hoped. So he headed north, camera in hand, to dig deeper into what might. Kim has also written for The Guardian, Al Jazeera, VICE and the Big Issue. This conversation was recorded online with Kim at home in Sydney, on 11 May 2022. Today on the show we wanted to talk a little about everything in regards to our Michigan teams. In our first hour we were joined by Chris Balas to get an update on Jim Harbaugh and our Michigan Wolverines. Chris also updated us on some news that broke regarding one of Harbaugh's hires reportedly leaving before he's even coached a game. Chris filled us in on everything happening there, and so much more. In our second hour we broke down the Detroit Tigers as they're currently not looking too hot and as roster moves have been happening all day long. Huge also asked the audience along with some of our insiders - Should the Tigers buy out the rest of Cabrera's contract and just move on? We were joined by Evan Woodbery as well as Evan Petzold to talk in depth about the Tigers, their farm teams, Cabrera's percentages, and much more. In the mid-2000's, childhood friends Paul Nguyen and Mark Simms started a website about their Toronto neighborhood: Jane-Finch.com. The website had news, community boards, and videos that the guys would make, usually with local rappers. The website got a lot of love -- until suddenly that changed. A Toronto talk radio station broadcast a series of interviews that largely condemned the rap videos, saying they encouraged gang violence. Paul and Mark only found out this had been happening months after the interviews started. Their website took a hit, and the guys were scared, angry… and largely silent. Now, 15 years later, they're talking about what went down.

Paul Nguyen, is a Canadian filmmaker and social activist. Nguyen was born in Toronto, Ontario to Vietnamese parents who fled to Canada after the fall of Saigon during The Vietnam War. After graduating from C.W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute, he attended York University and earned his Bachelor of Arts in film in 2004. Nguyen grew up in the Jane and Finch neighborhood. In 2004, Nguyen created Jane-Finch.com to address the constant negative media coverage about his community. Nguyen launched Jane-Finch.com on March 13, 2004, in response to negative stereotypes about the Jane and Finch community. The website gives an unprecedented look at the neighborhood and features a multimedia library of information. In late 2005, a community news section was added to allow reporters to document local events not covered by the mainstream media. The website produces music videos, public service announcements, and broadcasts local political debates and town halls. In addition to the production of original content, the website also publishes submissions from residents. In 2012, he was among the first 60 Canadians to receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal at the inaugural presentation ceremony at Rideau Hall to honor significant contributions and achievements to the country. Citizenship and Immigration Canada featured Nguyen on the list of Noteworthy Canadians of Asian Origin to highlight valuable contributions made by Canadians of Asian heritage.
