Talk Birdie To Me

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2025 57:54

It would be a rookie error to not start today's podcast by talking about the superstar Minjee Lee's fantastic win in Texas, surely a hall of fame position is a lock (down the track), what a gun. That said it wasn't all smooth sailing, some bogies early in the last round, but a great recovery, and Jeeno Thitikul on the hunt right behind her. Scores were quite high, due to weather and the course, but the play was slower than ideal.Nick has been watching Minjee's putting, and says it was insane how good she was. Mark not a fan of the course saying he has 'never seen a worse looking course on TV'., and that it did not look like a course prepared to hold a major.But....Tommy Fleetwood. We all wanted him to get there, but he fell at the final hurdle, and Mark has an acronym 'ABK', meaning 'Anyone But Keegan'. Which he describes as this: if you are going to lose the lead late in a tournament, you have to lose it to anyone but Keegan Bradley. Reasonable. Nick and Mark both said Tommy's press conference afterwards was classy, and handled very well.On Keegan, the Ryder Cup. Can a player/captain work? Nick and Mark say it's difficult, and Nick explains why being captain is so hard.Nick saw a video of Scotty Scheffler over the weekend that he loved, on what fans want to see - we play a bit of it and discuss. After the turn, Nick runs through the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia schedule, there is one particular addition Nick is excited about and says he may look to play in. Mark has some news on the makeup of Royal Melbourne Composite for the Australian Open.Top 5 today is fun, Mark gives his 5 most famous quotes in golf and Nick has to identify who said it....Nick got 5/5 , play along and see how you go. During the Top 5, Nick and Mark each tell (different) stories about Tour Pro Retief Goosen.PING Globals are big today, and Mark admits he has been playing the old intro music at home....a little strange? We thought so too. During the PING Globals, Mark tells a very funny story about Tour Pro Mike Harwood playing against Greg Norman at Firestone and being heckled in an amusing way.Feedback - comments on Minjee's win, and lots of comments on the Wyndham Clark discussion last week, including one wolfpacker who gets on Nick's nerves, with Nick saying that this listener 'has no clue what he's talking about'. Ouch.Following Nick and Marks Top 5 courses in the world last week, wolfpacker Tony from Brisbane sent in the Top 5 courses that he has played....it's a pretty impressive list! And wolfpacker Sean O'Brien has found a video that he thinks Mark will get worked up, we play it live on the pod. It has to do with the investigation into the dodgy Top 100 list.....and Mark says he will have a 'name' of the person responsible for the St Andrews inclusion, and will 'out them' on the podcast next week.Nick's turn for the masterclass and today it's on Minjee's swing....worth a look! We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. After a few years of the men's and women's Australian Opens running concurrently, Golf Australia has made the decision to revert back to separate tournaments for the first time since 2021.The concurrent tournament came under heavy criticism from Australian major winners Cameron Smith and Hannah Green with issues around scheduling and course conditions proving to be a bugbear for the golfers. Asian Tour pro Marcus Fraser told Quentin Hull the change back to the old format will be welcomed by his peers.

This week Mark tries to, after 5-finger discounting a pair of FootJoys a couple of weeks ago, to do the same with a Titleist putter that he has found. In fairness it is quite stunning. Then his eyes turn to a new pair of FootJoys. As Al Czervik said, the mans a menace. We discuss Pebble Beach. Mark loved the drone shots, and Nick is a fan of the drone shot tracer. The weather was a bit mixed, leads to a chat as to why some golfers play well in the rain and others don't. Nick has a theory which he talks through. Mark tells a story about playing in driving rain in Scotland.Nick decides to have one final crack at a replacement for Wolfpack. He's had another dinner party with the Mount Lawley Toffee Nose Crowd *. Does he succeed? Spoiler alert, no.Minjee Lee is using a long putter, Nick and Mark discuss and talk about whether you can go back and forth.Mark has been looking at the TGL ratings and talks to them, and about Tiger being pinged by the shot clock. There was a suggestion on Twitter from a Wolfpacker about a shot clock idea which Mark and Nick discuss.Rumours get louder on the Australian Open...we chat about them. And then a voicemail comes in from Pete with a comment/question on slow play. Nick has another idea to solve slow play....could be a bit evil but it could work. And Mark has some audio of the loudest noise ever on a golf course, we play it.After the Turn, Marks Top 5 is on the most amazing up and downs he has seen. We get to PING Global results and we have a structural issue....we have no intro. Nick didn't like the AI one Mark created, and we haven't come up with any other option, so we are in a hole. Unprofessional.Lots of feedback, including a 59 for Mark to rate - dangerous after incurring the wrath of David Micheluzzi a couple of weeks agoAnd Nick's masterclass is simple but powerful. Oh and why does Mark call Mike Cocking from OCM an arsehole ? Awkward. As usual, unfortunately, Mark wants to finish the show with an AI song created on the spot. Does it go well? Does it crash and burn? We're coming from Titleist and Footjoy HQ, and we're here thanks to our great partners:The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data. We love a bonus pod, particularly in weeks when we have lots of feedback or questions from the 'Talk Birdie To Me' Wolfpack, too much to fit into the normal pod, so we smash out a bonus pod! Fun!Today's a ripper with a few voicemails. We have a voicemail from Peter who has an idea about allowing more holes to be played as Par 3 holes, leading to a chat about tees.Voicemail from Steve, and an email from Hugh, both asking about Minjee Lee's form and if it has anything to do with moving to Callaway. Mark talks about how he managed the process of changing clubs to ensure it was not any more difficult than it already was.An email from Paul asking about coaches teaching techniques to golfers that slow down play, and we discuss the importance of reading greens. Nick tells us was the best green reader he ever saw.And a voicemail from Jack in Camperdown, Victoria, asking about rule changes, specifically bunker play at his course. A great pod, that takes a turn for the worse when we discuss Snot Blocks, which Nick has never heard of, and Mark and Dan attempt (badly) to explain what they are.A big thanks to our wonderful Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, like the have for Nick O'Hern. We love it when we can do the pod from a golf club, and today we're in Melbourne's sandbelt at the stunning Southern Golf Club to celebrate the unveiling of a statue of the legendary Bob Shearer. It looks incredible, we've put some pics on our socials. Nick and Mark have a couple of cracking stories about Bob, including one where Victoria Golf Course was famously deemed 'unplayable' in Round 1 of the 2002 Australian Open with Bob, Mark and Richard Ball. Mark explains what happens to them all on the tee to cause the days play to be cancelled, leading to that famous picture of Peter Thomson dropping the ball to check the green. It was quite a dark day for Australian golf. After the turn we chat with the head honch at Southern, Brad Robb, and find out the backstory and hear some more stories about Bob.Onto some golf news from the past week. Minjee Lee. We love her so it was disappointing to see her fall away in the US Open at the weekend. She was doing so well, but then a rough few holes knocked her out of contention. However credit to Yuka Saso who played beautifully to win the tournament. What kind of Chair will Ian Baker-Finch make? Nick and Mark discuss what the PGA of Australia need, and what his style might be.Nick loved the story of Robert MacIntyre winning the Canadian Open at the weekend, with his Dad Dougie as his caddie. Great scenes, plenty of emotion. Fantastic stuff. We call pod listener Pete from Western Australia, who has a comment of some recent advice that Mark Allen gave here. Pete tells us the impact that it has had on his game. It's a ripping story. After the turn we have a chat with Brad Robb, the General Manager at Southern Golf Club. He talks us through how the statue of Bob Shearer came about, who they commissioned to design it and why, and some of the work they've been doing on the course to make it even better. Southern have been working with our mate Mike Cocking at OCM which means you know the outcome will be stunning.Nick counts down his Top 5 divorces in golf. One may surprise you.Plenty of feedback, lots on young Eden from Coffs Harbour, far too much to read out, but we touch on a couple. And a couple of great questions for Nick and Mark.Nick takes us around the world with the PING global results, and for our mates at the new watchMynumbers app, Mark has a masterclass inspired by Minjee Lee and something he saw her doing in the US Open.A big thanks to our Talk Birdie partners:PING, they'll help you play your best, you can see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting;the new watchMynumbers app, the most powerful data based golf app in the world, download from the App Store ;and the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear.
