Finalli is striving to radically adopt innovation to disrupt and bolster our future defense capabilities, and with battlefield-defining technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum on the horizon, he argues that not only will private sector competition create better solutions but those solutions will pay dividends in sectors far beyond defense. It's become more and more common for organizations in the Defense Department, from the military services to geographic combatant commands and beyond, to have chief technology officers. What do they do? What challenges do they tackle? Why are they becoming increasingly important as the U.S. military tries to maintain its technological edge over China and other shrewd and savvy rivals using tech to create asymmetries? To help grapple with these questions, I sat down with Schuyler Moore, the CTO of U.S. Central Command, and Justin Fanelli, the CTO of the U.S. Department of the Navy.
Bob Bozic's life story reads like pulp fiction. After a tough upbringing, Bob ran away at 14 and lived on the streets of Toronto. A gangster bookie took him under his wing and taught him to fight. Bob won bout after bout, eventually becoming the amateur heavyweight boxing champ in Canada and fighting Larry Holmes at Madison Square Garden (Bob didn't fare well). After retiring in his 20s, Bob got mixed up in smuggling and attempted to rob a bank, among other crimes. He eventually married and had a child, earning money as a bouncer and bartender — including 25 years behind the bar at Fanelli Cafe in New York City. Bob's new book, "So what happens is..." comes out in June. Check out his June 9 book launch at Fanelli. This episode is sponsored by Berg + Moss Architects, a small architecture studio based in Beacon. Since 1999, Berg + Moss has specialized in housing, hospitality, healthcare and adaptive re-use of historic structures throughout the Hudson Valley and tri-state area.

We wanted to have Heems on not just because we are a fan of his former group Das Racist (you may remember their song “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”) but because we wanted to talk to him about Punjabi food. About growing up in Queens. About his new passion for gardening. Check out his very cool new album, Lafandar. Junior Handler Wins NOHS Finals in Orlando [caption id="attachment_12679" align="alignleft" width="439"] Adam showing his dog to Best of Breed.[/caption] The 2023 AKC National Owner Handled Series Finals was won by 14-year-old Adam Kucera and his two year old Irish Setter, Stryker. Adam and Stryker's breeder, Patty Fanelli, join host Laura Reeves to share their story. “At (Adam's) first show, he beat me for Winner's Dog,” Fanelli said. “It was one point with the brother. The next show was the Potomac Specialty. He went best in sweeps and he took a five point major and went best of Winners and best puppy. “And I said to him, "You just took a five-point specialty major." And he said, ‘I don't even know what that is.' He sure knows now." Stryker is Adam's first Irish Setter that his grandmother arranged to purchase from Fanelli. He showed a Boston Terrier first, but really wanted to show a bigger dog. Adam says he does all of Stryker's grooming “except the clipper work because I am so afraid he's going to just move and it's just going to go, it's all gone.” The most challenging part of training Stryker, Adam said, was teaching him to freestack “Because he always just wants to jump, he always just wants to jump on my shoulders and thinks it's time to play as soon as I hold a treat and not hold him.” A 4.0 home-schooled student, Adam says he practices with Stryker every morning before completing his school work. Competing in NOHS gives Adam and is family more time to spend at the shows. “My first show, we went to the show and I didn't win the breed,” Adam said. “We went to go watch the groups and we saw that there were two groups going and we were like ‘why are there two, there should only be one?' So then we found out what owner handler was. It's kind of hard to show an Irish Setter. There's not that many owner handlers out where I live, so if we want to stay a little bit longer at the show, we can do owner-handled and that gives us stuff to do and it's a really fun competition.” Adam has set lofty goals for himself and his dog. His remaining goals for Stryker include winning best of breed at the National Specialty and winning the breed at Westminster Kennel Club. He dreams of becoming a professional handler and breeding Irish Setters in his future. Take a listen to the entire episode for more from this outstanding young man.

In 2020, The secretary of the U.S. Navy signed out an Information Superiority Vision, naming information superiority as a key strategic focus for the department,as well as restructuring and empowering the role of the Navy CIO, and charting a course for the sea service to take action on its most pressing needs in IT and cybersecurity. Now more than three years later, the Navy is continuing to execute on that strategy, with some new technology leadership in place. One of those leaders is Justin Fanelli, technical director for Navy's PEO Digital and newly appointed acting CTO for the service. In a conversation with the Daily Scoop podcast, Fanelli touches on how the department has made progress executing the Information Superiority Vision, how the department is approaching AI and what the service is doing to better bridge the valley of death to scale innovation. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Luciano Di Croce from the Center of Genomic Regulation in Barcelona to talk about his work on epigenetic landscapes in cancer. The Di Croce Lab focuses on the Polycomb Complex and its influence on diseases like cancer. Luciano Di Croce started out his research career investigating the oncogenic transcription factor PML-RAR. They could show that in leukemic cells knockdown of SUZ12, a key component of Polycomb repressive complex 2 (PRC2), reverts not only histone modification but also induces DNA de-methylation of PML-RAR target genes. Episode 46 of Body Justice is all about the intersection Eating Disorders and ADHD from a Neurodivergent Affirming Lens! Did you know 17% of ED sufferers also have ADHD? Wondering how might this impact recovery? This episode is for you. About today's guest: Stacie Fanelli, she/her, LCSW, is a clinical social worker and therapist working primarily in the intersection of neurodivergence and eating disorders. She leans heavily on lived experience as a late-diagnosed ADHDer in sustained eating disorder recovery, as well as ongoing continuing education in anti-carceral and affirming treatment approaches, to support individuals and families in pursuing their visions for recovery. Stacie has worked at all levels of care in treatment of eating disorders and developed an interest in addressing concerns specific to neurodivergent populations through advocacy and education after observing poor treatment outcomes and further harm perpetuated in programs that were designed around neurotypical needs. In her outpatient work at two group practices in Southern California, she utilizes elements of various cognitive modalities but emphasizes relationship and deconstruction of oppressive systems as primary tools for healing internalized capitalism, ableism, and fatphobia. She remains committed to providing education through social media, trainings, and upcoming writings to eating disorder professionals on de-pathologization of neurodivergent traits as well as to neurodivergent professionals on incorporating anti-diet and fat liberation lenses into their work. Drinking wine should be a relaxing event and lifestyle enhancer, at least this is how Swirl co-founder Federico Fanelli views it. Originally from Italy, Federico came to Japan on a mission to introduce the wine lifestyle to Japanese. After a few years selling wine B2B, he together with his co-founder started Swirl, an online wine subscription service. Swirl is a very user friendly website incorporating gamification, fun navigation, and a super easy searchable wine cellar with over 140 wines from 5 major wine countries. Today I speak with Federico about the inspiration behind Swirl, scalability in a market not known for wine drinking, why the wine buying experience is usually disappointing, how Swirl creates an enhanced customer experience, and why they chose the company name Swirl, despite this potentially being the hardest English word ever for Japanese to pronounce. Other interesting topics of discussion:How the business idea for Swirl was born while drinking at a wine bar with his now co-founderHow the Swirl website uses "Gamification" to increase visitor conversion ratesCreating an enhanced customer experience to make a wow wine experienceFree unsolicited business ideas - for SwirlWhy most foreign wine business in Japan usually have a foreign customer base The wine selection process - Tasting over 2,000 wines to select 140 for the Swirl websiteWhy there are no Japanese wines on the Swirl websiteKarate and a cultural anthropology book became the catalyst for interest in JapanFavorite untranslatable Japanese word - the Mottainai conceptImporting wine into Japan is simple, but creating a wine business is a lot more difficultMost important lesson learned working in JapanSwirl Wine: https://swirlwine.co.jp/ More Now and Zen Japan episodes: http://nowandzen.jpGreat Sleep Starts Here = gugu Sleep Company: https://gugu.jpJapan Adventures via Camper Van = Dream Drive: https://www.dreamdrive.lifeUse the code word "ZEN" to receive discounts
