Text: Matthew 5:27-28; 1 Peter 2:1-3 What if adultery is not merely infidelity in marriage but a worldview that decimates the human condition? If so, it would be wise and warranted to consider where such a worldview comes from and how the Gospel gives us radical hope and true freedom.

Pete Townsend and Eoin Fitzgerald dive into the shortcomings of Metaverse graphics through the lens of Metaverse deep-thinker Matthew Ball and his new book on the Metaverse, what's up with the Ethereum Merge, the big fundraisings of Irish unicorn Wayflyer and Techstars grad Alloy, the death of ING's Yolt, Block's Cash App's small-dollar lending milestone, and old friend Bradley Tusk takes his super-charged regulatory advisory into crypto and DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations). KEY QUOTE: Pete Townsend on the long arc of development required for the Sci-Fi version of the Metaverse to come to life: “One of the example's from Matthew Bell's ‘Metaverse' book points to how most video game developers set the bar of latency, which is the delay between your controller instructing something and it actually happening in the game, at 10 to 20 milliseconds. “The quickest, you can possibly send a message of any kind between New York and Hong Kong is 45 milliseconds. So the world's infrastructure and fiber optics are not there yet to be able to support what is the Ready Player One and Snow Crash visualizations of what the metaverse really is, and there's a lot of work left to do. “There's going to be a ton of money going into the companies that are building the infrastructure that will enable the Metaverse to actually happen. It is such a massive, massive market and a huge opportunity.” STORIES WE COVERED: When Metaverse (Life in Color, 1-Aug-22) After $177 Billion in Investment, Why Do Metaverse Graphics Still Suck? Michael Quartey and Lukas Bruell, founder and co-founder of Eczodex, join the show this week to riff on how Eczodex is enabling investors to unlock more returns with traditional investments through DeFi (decentralized finance). This episode of MoneyNeverSleeps is sponsored by Philip Lee, one of Ireland's fastest-growing corporate law firms and expert advisors at the heart of the Dublin and London start-up, fintech and crypto communities. Eczodex are the ninth of the founding teams forming the Launchpool Web3 Techstars Accelerator Class of 2022 that we've got on the show in the lead-in to Demo Day in Dublin on June 30th. In this episode, Michael Quartey and Lukas Bruell talk with Pete Townsend and Eoin Fitzgerald about: – How their backgrounds uniquely prepared them to bring Eczodex to life – How Eczodex will bridge real-world assets into DeFi – Enabling yield enhancement strategies for real-world investor – Connecting the Eczodex vision with the realities of the crypto markets – Breaking down the problem for individual investors HIGHLIGHTS: Michael Quartey on the intersection of experiences that led him to the Eczodex idea: “I always was an entrepreneur at heart. I always had this ambition of not wanting to make my way up the corporate ladder. I always wanted to do something. So even a couple of years into my graduate job [with CSC Financial Services, now DXC], I was thinking of ways in which to build a business. At the time, it was an eCommerce startup that I was working on with my brother. “And similarly to now, the market crashed, and then we had the dot.com bust. We weren't as far advanced as we are with Eczodex right now, so at the time, my brother and I decided to stop. That led me into contracting and I built on the skills I had learned through CSC to work for over 20-plus years in the financial services space. “Once I understood what was going on with decentralized finance, I had this epiphany where I realized how much better the infrastructure could be, how much more efficiently things could run using all of the innovation of blockchain technology and decentralized finance. That's one of the sources of inspiration behind Eczodex. “The other [source of inspiration] is just down to my own inadequacies as an investor, specifically with stocks. Over the years I've experienced the highs and lows of investing, and that was another spark behind this idea of trying to find a better way to invest in products with more predictable return patterns. “Once I realized that there were many crypto projects also trying to address similar issues around risk and volatility, I started reading their whitepapers. I realized that not only are there other people trying to solve similar problems but there's all this amazing innovation going on. Why not look at this space more closely and try to build something here?” Lukas Bruell on his entry point into entrepreneurship and meeting Michael Quartey at the University of Cambridge: “I wanted to build a venture and gained my first experience by setting up a research venture with my roommate helping students understand what's happening in financial markets. Planning that as a business, we just literally aimed to solve a problem. We did that by concisely publishing reports about M&A deals and found that we helped a lot of people. “That was the first time where I realized there is an incredible opportunity to solve problems out there and there's nothing more exciting than doing that. “I then realized that I wanted to be an entrepreneur for sure. When I got to Cambridge, I saw the incredibly powerful nature of crypto to an even greater level. I was interested in crypto for a while, I was reading about it, and investing in crypto a bit, but I certainly wasn't involved in building ventures in crypto. “But then I met Michael, and he had an initial draft of the Eczodex solution, and I also met a lot of people in the Blockchain Club in Cambridge. That's when I started to dig deeper and deeper, went dow...

In this episode, Pete Townsend talks to Jeff and Colin about: How their paths first converged with the predecessor to MegaFans after doing the first legal ICO (initial coin offering) in Canada. An inside look at the MegaFans platform ‘Mining' the web2 market and building a web3 community The longer-term vision for MegaFans and the esports market overall How Jeff and Colin are approaching the big challenges in front of them right now HIGHLIGHTS: Jeff Donnelley on getting his first big break in gaming marketing that sent him down the path towards MegaFans: “I was working with the agency Havas on user acquisition, retention and monetization programs for gaming companies, and we landed DraftKings back when they were just developing their brand. “They approached us and said, ‘Look, can you show us the go-to-market strategy for this? How do we acquire new users? What's the best way to do it cost-effectively and efficiently?' “So, we went to work for them and helped them model out and build their user onboarding, retention and monetization programs for about five years.” Colin Bracey on the earliest days of mobile gaming: “In the early 2000s, I was the European lead developer for Motorola, and we came up with the first ever over-the-air mobile game, which was effectively a Nintendo Game Boy bolted onto the back of a Motorola mobile phone with wires sticking out all over the place. We made a call over the network, and we could see two Marios running on the screen at the same time – that was my intro into mobile gaming.” Jeff Donnelley on his convergence with Colin Bracey: “In 2016 I had my eye on the esports space, and that's where my career had culminated to that point. I had already worked in iGaming, PC gaming, mobile gaming, fantasy sports gaming and I was in a really unique position. So, I went and started another ad agency and media company and started working with some other gaming companies while I started building my agency. “That's how I met Colin – I was doing a global go to market strategy for his company, which was another mobile e-sports company.” Colin Bracey on his convergence with Jeff Donnelley: “When I started my own company (RewardMob), we had a mobile game which was similar to MegaFans but based more around sweepstakes, and we did the first legal ICO in Canada. “So, we had the Canadian government and the British Columbia Securities Commission on board, and then at the end when we're ready to go with our big press releases, [the BCSC] said ‘You can't tell anybody about this.' “That was going to be our big press release, and that's where Jeff came into it because he was doing the global go-to-market strategy – it affected him probably more than it did me!” Jeff Donnelley on bringing things together with Colin into MegaFans: “I had been working on the MegaFans idea and had a prototype built, and said to Colin ‘We've got you and me, we've got great developers and we've got a couple of other biz dev people – why don't we just pull them all over to MegaFans and bring that to market instead?'” Jeff Donnelley on the MegaFans product: “We tested the product in market, and we were off-chain originally, but we always knew we were going to go [onchain]. MegaFans is an esports platform – it's a software kit that can integrate into any mobile game and offer esports tournaments in those games to players around the world simultaneously. “You can win prizes in t...

Every election cycle, the conversation of electoral reform is revived to some extent. 2021 was no different. Consider this: In Toronto, the Liberals only won 48.9 per cent of the votes, but they won more than 90 per cent of the seats in Canada's largest city, electing 48 of the 53 MPs there. The NDP won 14.5 per cent of the vote in Toronto, but ended up with no seats. The nearly 400,000 voters who voted for them now have no representation in Parliament. This is rabble radio, and this is what's up for discussion. I'm your host and the editor of rabble.ca, Chelsea Nash. Let's dive in. On Thursday evening, rabble hosted its monthly live politics panel Off the Hill. This time, the theme was Back to a Hung Parliament: How do we make it work for people? This was the first time our illustrious panelists were able to get together since the recent election, and, seeing as how we're still waiting for Parliament to be recalled sometime this fall, the topic of discussion was about lessons learned from this election campaign, and, if the election results were really more or less the same, how can we make this minority government different? Robin Browne and Libby Davies are Off the Hill's co-hosts. Robin is a communications professional and the co-lead of the 613-819 Black Hub, living in Ottawa. Libby Davies is the author of Outside In: a Political Memoir. She served as the MP for Vancouver East from 1997-2015, and is former NDP Deputy Leader and House Leader. Guests include: Leah Gazan, who was recently re-elected to her post as Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre. She is currently the NDP Critic for Children, Families, and Social Development, as well as the Deputy Critic for Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. Leah is a member of Wood Mountain Lakota Nation, located in Saskatchewan, Treaty 4 territory. Chuka Ejeckam is a political researcher and writer, and works in the labour movement in British Columbia. He focuses on political and economic inequity and inequality, both within Canada and as produced by Canadian policy. Read Chuka's regular column on rabble.ca. Rachel Snow is Iyahe Nakoda and the daughter of late Reverend Dr. Chief John Snow. She holds a juris doctor from the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan and is an outspoken educator, speaker, writer and co-contact person for the Indigneous Activist Networks. Last but not least: Karl Nerenberg is an award-winning journalist, broadcaster and filmmaker, working in both English and French languages. He joined rabble as parliamentary correspondent in 2011. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Let me remind you what we talked about at the beginning of this episode; how the Liberals won 90 per cent of the seats in Toronto with less than half of the popular vote. This means that more than half of Toronto voters won't have their interests represented on Parliament Hill or in various caucus meetings. Nerenberg points out how the first-past-the-post system serves to deepen Canada's regional differences, painting entire sections -- or entire cities -- with broad swaths of Conservative blue or Liberal red, with some of the NDP's orange and the Bloc's light blue peeking through. Take Saskatchewan, for instance. In that prairie province, the NDP managed to garner more than one-fifth of the votes, 21.1 per cent. That is more than three points higher than the NDP's national popular vote share. But the New Democrats didn't win a single Saskatchewan seat. The Conservatives won all 14. The voter demographic in Saskatchewan and other prairie provinces is not nearly as monochrome as our electoral results suggest. This pits entire regions against one another rather than taking into account the nuance of demographic voting habits across the country. Read the rest of Karl's analysis at rabble.ca. Also this week, Stephen Wentzell writes about five ways the incoming Parliament could make history. First on the list? Commit to more ambitious emissions targets. With increased heat waves, drought, wildfires and more extreme weather events, Canada is warming at twice the global rate. Five-year targets on our way to a net-zero 2050 aren't cutting it -- and as overnight temperatures hit records in addition to days above 20 degrees Celsius -- Canadians don't have time for deliberating anymore; we need leadership on climate action, writes Wentzell. He also writes that this new session could implement universal pharmacare with dental care, enhance resources and supports for nurses who have been left burnt out by the pandemic, extend COVID-19 financial supports which are set to expire on October 23. And, finally, this new Parliament could end the discriminatory ban on the donation of LGBTQ+ individuals' blood. Also on the site this week: Cathy Crowe writes that every month in Toronto, there is a monthly homeless memorial that's been hosted for over twenty years. While there used to be between one and five names of unhoused people, the numbers are now routinely in the double digits. The October memorial saw 15 names of people added. It's a tragedy, writes Crowe, but one that is avoidable. Toronto's Shelter and Housing Justice Network (SHJN) recently released its evidence based winter and spring plan to provide emergency and shelter support and infrastructure so the city's homeless population can have a shot at surviving the fast-approaching winter. Brent Patterson breaks down everything we know about the RCMP's militarized "resource extraction protection unit" which has been arresting and perpetuating violence upon land defenders across the country. And, Philip Lee writes about how the lack of language diversity on the internet actually makes it a whole lot less accessible than we might think it is. All that and more at rabble.ca. EXTRO That's a wrap for this week's episode of rabble radio. Stay tuned for more of our social and political coverage next week. Classicbot Toys – Philip Lee– Ep81 Philip Lee is a self-taught toy designer from Hong Kong. He was an experienced advertising creative who always wanted to make his own toy. So, in December 2016 Philip started his own company Playsometoys, and debuted his first toy Classicbot Classic. The Classicbot looks like the old Macintosh computer from the 80's, but with arms, legs and a face. His latest project is the iBoy which looks like the original iPod but also with arms, legs and so on. These toys do not function as a computer or music player but that was not his goal. He wanted to create a fun toy that looked like classic Apple products. The iBoy has some more functionality than the Classicbot Classic. The arms and legs are magnetic, and it has a chrome finish on the back. The parts are made by injection molding in ABS plastic. Philip did a lot of the design work himself using Cinema 4D. Then his factory would take his files and refine them for final production. On The House is back in Westminster this week after a trip up the Westway to Kensington. Dr Philip Lee is away, so Sam takes the wheel. After Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson’s ITV debate, are we any closer to knowing who’ll step into Number 10 on Friday, December 13th?Sam is joined by trade policy expert David Henig, who provides a dose of realism to the Brexit debate in his capacity as the director of the UK Trade Policy Project at the European Centre for International Political Economy.“They’re asking how we can get this trade deal done quickly,” says David. “Perhaps we should be asking how to get it done right…” Sam and David also discuss the freshly launched Lib Dem manifesto, and who they’d want in the fantasy trade negotiators team. Mourinho does not get a look in. Thanks to the Hamptons Bar in near St James’ Park for hosting us this week. Audio production and scripting by Alex Rees. Producer: Andrew Harrison. "Horrible, tragic, indefensible;" that's how host Tanya O'Rourke describes the Cincinnati Bengals blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers this week on the Flying Pigskin podcast. It was horrible indeed as the Bengals offense managed only 25 yards rushing while the Bengals defense allowed 49ers rushers 259 yards (572 yards overall). O'Rourke is joined by WCPO sports photographer Philip Lee and podcaster Scott Kyser to breakdown the game, vent their frustrations, and look ahead to next week when the Bengals face the Bills in Buffalo. Andy Dalton threw for a career-high 418 yards in the Cincinnati Bengals' season debut on Sunday in Seattle, but it wasn't enough to earn the win. But the Bengals put up a good fight, losing by a single point (21-20) in a game that was predicted to be all Seahawks. The Bengals' aggressive offense marked the end of the Marvin Lewis era and ushered in a new era under first-year head coach Zac Taylor. WCPO sports anchor John Popovich is joined by WCPO photographer Philip Lee and Craft Brewed Sports' Scott Kyser to discuss the debut of the Taylor-led Bengals, take a look around the AFC North and preview the Bengals' week two matchup at home against the San Francisco 49ers.
