Our conversation with Emmy Award-winning editor Lyric Ramsey was a whole vibe. Lyric's eclectic credits include Below Deck, MasterChef Junior, Sweet Life: Los Angeles, Project Runway Junior as well as A Black Lady Sketch Show, On My Block, Clarice, The Goldbergs, Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story, You People, Real Housewives of Atlanta, the BET Hip Hop Awards and I Love New York. Also, no shade to any of our previous guests but if we had a Post In Black best-dressed award, Lyric Ramsey would be the recipient. Business equestrian is how she referred to it and honestly, it's perfect. It's no surprise that we begin with fashion as we talk about how Lyric earned the Emmy for Drive with Swizz Beatz, a Hulu docuseries that explores the art cars, oversized ATVs and car clubs that decorate Houston, Texas. Having loved film and television from a young age, this Howard University grad talks about being back home in California after graduation and while leaving an appointment at a salon, seeing a film crew in action on Crenshaw Boulevard in Inglewood. She ended up getting hired on the spot as a set production assistant. We talk about her love of the post-production space and why perseverance and optimism are very crucial attributes to hold tight to despite shifts in the industry. We get into what it means to have job insecurity and the side effects of gate-keeping. We talk about nerding out on editing and why it's important to know multiple platforms and constantly expand upon your skills. Steadily clear throughout the entirety of our conversation is that Lyric is a true blue creative. It shines. It also perfectly illustrates how following one's passion can lead to a longevity of not only satisfaction but success and elevation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/postinblack/support
In this episode, LZ sits down and delves into the remarkable career of Tim Gunn, a multi-talented American figure known for his roles as an author, academic, and television personality. From his early days as a faculty member at Parsons School of Design to his eventual leadership as the chair of fashion design there, Gunn's journey in the fashion world has been nothing short of extraordinary. But it was his iconic 16-season run as the on-air mentor to aspiring designers on the reality television sensation, Project Runway, that catapulted him to global recognition. His impact extended beyond the show, resulting in the creation of two spin-off programs: Bravo's Tim Gunn's Guide to Style and Lifetime's Under the Gunn.In addition to his television endeavors, Gunn is also an accomplished author, with five books to his name, all offering valuable insights into the world of fashion and style.Notably, he extended his mentorship to a younger generation on Project Runway: Junior, where he served as both an executive producer and a guiding influence for teen designers. But that's not all - Timothy Gunn's talents reach even further. He lent his distinctive voice to the character Baileywick, the castle steward in Disney Junior's beloved series Sofia the First, and also narrated the popular sitcom Mixology.Join us as we explore the fascinating journey and multifaceted career of this influential personality in the realms of fashion and entertainment.

Chelsea Ma won Project Runway Juniors when she was just 15 years old...and with no previous fashion experience. Like a lot of designers, she had an interest in fashion, but had no idea where to start. After convincing her parents to let her trade figure-skating lessons for sewing lessons, she began one step at a time by learning how to use a machine and creating her first designs. In this interview, she shares exactly how she went from a few sewing lessons to winning Project Runway Juniors. Chelsea is proof that hard work and determination pay off, even if you have no background or experience with design. In the interview (which you’ll love) we cover: What it was like applying to Project Runway Junior (wow what a marathon) What kinds of questions PRJ asked in the interview How she felt as a 14-year-old flying out to New York for Project Runway Juniors The inside scoop on her first challenge (what a rollercoaster!) What the competitive environment was like on Project Runway Junior Chelsea’s favorite challenges The risks Chelsea took on the show What it was like being judged by Tim Gunn, Hannah Jeter, Kelly Osbourne, Christian Siriano, and Aya Kanai How she felt in the last moments before revealing her collection How she confidently faced the finale of Project Runway Junior The fact that the dramatically slow passage of time before announcing a winner is actually a real thing ;) What it was like winning Project Runway Junior!!! Where her ambition took her after Project Runway Junior and why you should “burn your boats” What her plans are for when she graduates! And so much more! CHELSEA MA THE CHAMP Chelsea Ma had almost no previous fashion experience when she won Project Runway Junior Season 2--I mean, she was only 14 when she applied! She and her sewing teacher; Miss Trang, had to hustle to put together her application in just two weeks. They had to make a video, a portfolio, and FIVE outfits...two weeks, people! Then auditions, interviews, and off to New York. Sounds surreal, right? And then she won. But it wasn’t as short of a story as all that...there were tears, sweat, and even a little blood on the road to her success (sewing leather by hand is fierce business)--but this teen is wise beyond her years and tells us all about the hustle and how she kept going through each of the challenges, even when she was sure they would send her home. Chelsea tells us all about the rollercoaster of the challenges and being judged by Tim Gunn, Hannah Jeter, Kelly Osbourne, Christian Siriano, and Aya Kanai. She talks about the time limits, the preparation, the materials, the drama (or thankfully, lack thereof) between the competitors, and goes into detail about what was going through her head during these high-stress challenges. Like in episode 1, when she thought she made a major mistake with her materials, but of course absolutely slayed it. SO SHE WON, WHAT NOW? If it’s not obvious that Chelsea is a hustler that never stops, let me make it clear: this woman does! Not! Stop! Right now she’s in school full time and working on two collections. Check out her line Visual Novel, her collection-based fashion line that launched in September 2018, and keep an eye out for her accessories line (that she’s doing for fun), Dessac. This Project Runway Junior winner has so much drive and ambition that we know her career is going to be an illustrious one. Can’t wait to see what’s to come! Aya Kanai is the Executive Fashion Director at Cosmo and Seventeen Magazine, a former puppeteer master and a current judge on Project Runway Junior. She launched her career by starting at the bottom as a closet assistant for the original Teen Vogue crew and has proven to us that hard work really does pay off. Aya is an overall inspiration to the entire CollegeFashionista community and we are thrilled we got to sit down with her and hear her story on #CFofficehours. Listen to her exclusive advice on this latest episode!
Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez’s process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. For Zachary Fernandez, designing is an art form and a way to communicate his ideas. He considers how his intentions for a new collection will translate to his audience, and pays attention to his process and evolution, which helps him grow professionally. Though he just finished his junior year of high school, Fernandez is a rising fashion star thanks to his dedication and the support of mentors, family, and teachers.
How much is real — and how much is for the highlight reel? Host Elisa Benson talks to three women about their varied (and emotional) experiences on-screen, including Aya Kanai, judge of "Project Runway Junior;" Eliza Thompson, former "Jeopardy" contestant; and Emilie Bandy, who shares a hilarious story about appearing on "My Cat From Hell."
The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Project Runway Junior Star Tim Gunn. The winner of Project Runway Junior will receive a full scholarship to the prestigious FIDM in California, a complete home sewing and crafting studio provided by Brother, a feature in Seventeen Magazine and a $25,000 cash prize, to help launch their line. Project Runway Junior is produced by The Weinstein Company, Sara Rea Productions and Full Picture. Executive producers include Bob and Harvey Weinstein (CoChairmen of The Weinstein Company), Patrick Reardon and Barbara Schneeweiss of The Weinstein Company, Sara Rea, Tim Gunn and Jane Cha and Desiree Gruber of Full Picture. Eli Lehrer, Mary Donahue and David Hillman of Lifetime also executive produce.
Ladies and gentleman, this episode will forever be an absolute dream come true for me. The day that we had the Emmy Award-winning co-host of Lifetime’s mega-hit show Project Runway Tim Gunn. Tim is fashion royalty and he’s had a long lasting career as a mentor and educator with roles like Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design, Fashion Dean at Fifth & Pacific and Chief Creative Director at Liz Claiborne Inc. He’s also a New York Times best-selling author. Most recently he has an upcoming show debuting November 12 called Project Runway Junior. This show will focus on up and coming emerging young designers aged 13-17. Tim will co-host alongside super model Hannah Davis, Kelly Osborne, designer Christian Siriano and executive fashion editor at Cosmo and Seventeen Magazines, Aya Kanai. Be sure to tune in on Nov. 12 at 9p ET. Takeaways from our time together: How Tim didn’t get paid when Project Runway first launched (season 1 AND 2). Nada. Zilch. His So Money moment after years of living paycheck to paycheck as a “pauper educator,” he describes. Receiving a $50,000 inheritance in the 1990s and how he used it strategically. Fun Fact: Tim and I actually used to live in the same apartment building together (though I was always too shy to say Hello. I blame my yoga pants.) For more information visit www.somoneypodcast.com.
