Mary Walsh says she was born to play the tart-tongued older "Missus" living downstairs from a sad sack young bachelor in the very funny comedy The Missus Downstairs. The award-winning series is back for a second season, including a special Christmas episode (featuring Andy Jones), on Fibe TV.Co-starring is the man who lived the story, Newfoundland comedian Dave Sullivan. His character described the Missus as "like living above Joan Rivers only alive and without all the charm."Walsh, of course, is a Canadian comedy treasure, creating This Hour Has 22 Minutes after co-starring in the breakthrough East Coast comedy CODCO. She's brilliant in comedy or drama, with "The Grand Seduction," "Closet Monster" and "Happy Place" among her more recent film credits. At 70, the Order of Canada recipient finds herself busier than ever, writing, producing, directing and starring in "Missus" as well as directing fellow Fibe TV comedy troopers "HalfHandsome" in the Peak TV parody Jack TV. Asked about mentoring the next generation of Newfoundland comedy talent, Walsh says she's just as grateful to the kids for giving her all the artistic challenges she can handle. All I can say is I wish there had been a Mary Walsh-like mentor back when I was doing "Etobichannel." Listen to this episode for the laffs, stay for the wisdom.

With just a few days left in October, we take a look at two horror-adjacent queer films. Closet Monster takes coming out cliches and familiar character arcs and gives them a dash of Cronenberg, a sprinkle of Lynch and a pinch of Donnie Darko to tell its coming out story, but does it work? Meanwhile You're Killing Me casts viral LA comedy stars as friends who welcome a mysterious new boyfriend into their circle, just as some of them begin disappearing. We take a look at both, discuss the unmistakable horror influence of each film, even if neither one strictly qualify as horror.

Episode 31 of One Week Only! Our key film this week is "Closet Monster," a coming-of-age drama about a creative teenager who wants to study movie makeup in New York, and escape his small town and his homophobic father. Directed by Stephen Dunn, this imaginative film takes a familiar story and imbues it with fantastical art design, sharp wit & heartfelt emotion. It is now playing in New York, and will be coming to LA, and is released by Strand Releasing. This week's interview is with director Debra Eisenstadt, about her third feature film "Before the Sun Explodes," a comedy/thriller about an over-the-hill comedian who spends one crazy night in West Hollywood with a younger female comedian, with unexpected consequences. Eisenstadt talks about her experiences making micro-budget films, using her acting experience as a director, and the importance of the Slamdance filmmaking community. "Before the Sun Explodes" premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, and is part of September's Slamdance Cinema Club in Los Angeles & Chicago. Other films this week include "Goat," a harrowing look at college Frat hazing, starring Nick Jonas & directed by Andrew Neel; documentary "The Lovers & The Despot" about how Kim Jong-il kidnapped his favorite filmmakers to make films in North Korea, directed by Ross Adam & Robert Cannan; heartbreaking drama "Chronic" starring Tim Roth as a nurse for terminally ill patients, directed by Michel Franco; and "Cameraperson," a documentary memoir by veteran cinematographer Kristen Johnson. We've got international superstar Avril Lavigne speaking about her upcoming self-titled fifth full-length release, as well as some insight into her live shows, some reflection on her early career, and more. We also spoke with Canadian country star Gord Bamford, currently touring with Reba McIntire in support of his upcoming release Country Junkie. Gord also just donated $100,000 to 10 children's hospitals across Canada - what a stand up guy.
