Marni welcomes Nicole Russo to the Life Check Yourself studio. A personal stylist to high-achievers and executives, Nicole opened her own styling shopping service in 2017 and has styled thousands of people since. The duo discusses the most effective way to declutter, how to find your style and why dressing well means being empowered. How you dress, when it's authentic, is a reflection of who you are and who you want to be.   *         How to dress for power *         Avoid impulse purchases *         How to cleanse your closet   It's Not Any Less Feminist to Dress the Part [05:11]   The way you dress impacts the way you're perceived and the way you feel. Fashion can be wielded as a powerful tool to propel your life in the direction that you want it to go in.   You definitely need to be careful in that it has to feel authentic, or else it's not really going to empower you. It has to feel like you in some way.   Declutter Your Emotions and Your Closet [17:27]   Your closet is a reflection of you. It's murmurs of who you were or who you didn't become. Or even the dreams you held on to. But, perhaps it's time to declutter. Let go of the items you don't wear anymore so that you can be who you are now.   Our closets are a metaphor for our life.   Get Creative [20:00]   Experiment by wearing something new each day or each week to inspire creativity. Finding your style should be fun.   I find that you get a better sense of who you are, and it becomes like a creative fun process instead of a stressful one.   Make a Connection: ·         3 Secrets Men Wish You Knew *Free Download* ·          How to Eliminate Burnout: How to use the Radical Living Blueprint to Reinvent Your Life ·          Ready To Take Control Of Your Life?  Book A Call With Us ·          Let's Get You- A Free Guide To Edit Your Closet

Sunni and Lisa are joined by Ash Beckham.  Known for her viral Tedx Talk Coming Out of Your Closet, the “accidental advocate” for equality does not shy away from hard conversations. Her book Step Up: How to Live with Courage and Become an Everyday Leader (Sounds True, March 2020) is an empowering call-to-action to help mobilize all to embrace a different vision of leadership to create change in our workplaces, schools, places of worship, communities, and homes cultivated from both Beckham's personal and professional experiences.    Book Description:   A New Vision of Inclusive LeadershipWhat makes someone a leader? Someone you vote for, work for, or listen to for their expertise? With Step Up, equality advocate Ash Beckham challenges us to embrace a different vision of leadership―to stop focusing on external authorities and start reclaiming our own ability to create change. “What we need most are everyday leaders,” she writes. “We need people to step up and be the change they wish to see in the world. Anyone can do it. You can do it.” Whether your path involves activism, political engagement, or simply being a positive voice in your workplace, home, and community, Beckham's Step Up provides essential guidance on cultivating the eight pillars of everyday leadership:- Empathy―the art of relating to others with compassion for our shared humanity, regardless of whether we agree - Responsibility―how we can raise our awareness and consciously choose to behave in ways that heal instead of harm- Courage―understanding the nature of fear so we can move beyond our comfort zone one step at a time- Grace―how keeping our higher purpose always in sight helps us stop reacting with fear or anger- Individuality―learning to value and celebrate our uniqueness, including the parts of ourselves we often reject- Humility―ways to keep the ego in check and open the door to honest, collaborative relationships- Patience―guidance for disarming our tendency to rush ahead so we can act with greater deliberation and forethought- Authenticity―how we can embody our deepest truths and lead by example in any situationFor each pillar, Beckham shares engaging stories of her own journey from isolation and anger to a place of greater openness and connection―supported by scientific research and everyday practices to mindfully change the way you relate to yourself and the people in your life. Step Up is a powerful call to action―to speak when it feels easier to be silent, to do good without being self-righteous, and to create a world of inclusion where everyone has a voice and everyone belongs.

Hello? Hello, this is Caroline Schafer, your host at The Vitality Feed.  Today, we're going to talk about fashion, to help men with their style which is not usually on my agenda, but I am having a challenge in January.  Today's  podcast is geared towards that challenge. So I hope everybody enjoys. Please help me welcome Sarah D'Arcy. Sarah is a celebrity stylist and I personal stylist. She has experienced in editorial work as well as commercial and her website is SarahDarcey.com. Welcome Sarah! Thank you Caroline for having me. Absolutely. I'm so excited. I think this is kind of a perfect timing to do this with all the holiday parties right now. Hopefully people can utilize this and maybe especially the men who I'm going to focus on more today and get some good tips to, to knock it out of the park with their style. So give us a little backstory about how you got involved in the whole fashion thing. And I know this is audio. Sarah is so styling right now. Hopefully you can see the snippet on Facebook, but she looks great. . So Sarah, how did you get involved in fashion? So I always knew I wanted to work in fashion and I, I initially really wanted to be a buyer, but I really discovered that I was terrible at math and buying as much about math as it is about, you know, choosing great things. So I fell into styling and I went to George Brown college in Toronto and I interned for Dress For Success. And that's where I really discovered my love for helping people find confidence through what they wear. Fast forward a few years, I moved back to Vancouver where I'm originally from, and I opened my own styling business. And I've worked with celebrity clients. Like you mentioned, I work with people of all walks of life to help them find confidence, you know, through what they wear. that's awesome. I'm a firm believer in this. I don't think most of our listeners know that I actually have a fashion background, but I also love fashion. And I do think that when you put on nicer clothes and you do your hair and your makeup. I feel better than throwing on those leggings in a big sweatshirt and just a messy bun, you know. So I know you've been working with some clients. Tell us about a client story. I worked with the really amazing client recently. His name is Alex . He is in the new Marvel series with Jeremy Renner called Hawkeye and cool. Oh, he was fabulous that he was actually a really I wouldn't say difficult fit, but he had really, he has really interesting measurements, so he's six, five 250 pounds. And he, his measurements were just, when I first got them, I, I had a little bit of concern, especially in Vancouver because, you know, it's more geared to kind of a street style market. And so we worked together to do a magazine cover. I, I just really enjoyed working with him and the challenge of bringing in clothing and finding clothing that we're really going to fit fit his frame and also really accentuate and look really beautiful because he told me at the outset, oh, you know, I have a really hard time finding clothes, just so you know, I'm not an off the rack kind of guy and, you know, through preparation and finding some really great pieces through some partners the magazine cover turned out really great. And so the magazine will come out in February. So I'm excited for that. I think that's so cool that you get to have something tangible for your work. You know what I mean? Like most people that they do, the work and stuff, and a lot of it's remote, but you actually can like go by the magazine cover.  View it online. You're like, Hey, I did that. That's really neat. That's really interesting to walk by, you know, a store and see your work or online and see it out there. And, you know, know the process that happened behind what, what went in exactly into that, that work. And I'm sure it's much more lengthy than most people have any clue. It certainly is. And with that project, lots of research, lots of ordering things in and lots of you know, just really hoping and praying it would look fabulous and it did. Fantastic.  So I know the holidays are coming. And I would especially like to target the men out there, women can usually resource things a little bit better, but what are the top three things that men can do, to put their look together? Absolutely. So the first thing that I always tell my clients, including the men, is that they really need to set a foundation for their wardrobe. When you have this foundation in your wardrobe, you're able to go in and pull out those key pieces with ease and you're not scrambling, you know, to get to that party. So the first thing that I always say is that you need to edit your closet. So that includes donating, or consigning anything that you haven't worn in over a year. When you do this, you'll edit out all the stuff that doesn't work and you'll only see the things that do. And then as well in that process, if you take your measurements, when you go in to drop things off, to have them tailored, it'll be a very seamless and easy process because you know, your proportions. That's genius. Absolutely because it's just really important that people know what their body type is and how clothes fit them. So you have self-awareness when you take your measurements and you're able to go into your tailor and have really have a conversation about what clothes tend to fit you best. I always say as well, when people are starting out on this process with setting the foundation, it's important to focus on developing more of a classic style to set yourself up for success before you really delve deeper into what could be your personal style. Because when you have these classic pieces that are in your wardrobe, it just sets that foundation. So if you tend to like a trend that's out there, you can move one or two pieces in, but you still have that classic set of your foundation. You made me think of home decor and always liked the concept of keeping the big pieces classic, like the furniture and maybe the throw pillows or the throw blanket make that more trending, like a pop a lime green and red. So do you think that's the same thing like with dressing? Do you think that the trendy could come in with the accessories and to keep the classic part that, like you said, the standard basic pieces that you keep in your closet, the good suit and the good pair of khakis and a crew neck and things like that, the white shirt and all that. Absolutely. It's a brilliant comparison, you know when you think about it through throw pillows you can change up your throw pillows. Maybe you go for a lighter, more pastel color for spring, but then you get into maybe a more tartan hue into winter. It's exactly like that. So when you have those core investment pieces and then you add in You know, accessories like a belt or you know, a pocket square. It's just a really brilliant way to for it to be one economical. And you're not having a lot of garments that are just sitting in the closet. So therefore it's good for your pocketbook and it's good for the environment. Perfect. I love that you hit on those three things and I like fun socks. I love, I think it's such a good conversational starter too. Cause there are some, and there's sock companies, I saw one little boy and he's like killing it and he produces this whole sock line and it does a charitable thing attached to it. I love that. I think can also be like a little personalized touch to your wardrobe. So maybe. Really cool, positive things. So what are some big don't do's? Some definite big don't do that, I see out there all the time.  Is men wearing gym shoes when they're not in the gym and it's not, you know, the fun, new balance casual you know, that athletes are trend is, are white sneakers that you see men out there wearing with with their regular wear. Having the right footwear is really something that will elevate your look and leaving those white gym shoes for the gym.  So I was a formepr commuter in New York and it was commonplace to run to your job in your sneakers, and then change at work to legit shoes. But today there seems to be this whole, I see it in catalogs and every. The white sneakers with dresses, which I find is a little bit odd and even suits, you know, formal suits, the button up suit with, with sneakers. So what do you think about. I think if it's the right sneaker, it can look, it can look really, really nice. It just depends on also again, knowing your body type, knowing your proportions. Say for example, a man wearing a beautiful suit and say he's a goddess sneaker. If the sneaker is in the right style, it's more of a casual but elevated option. It can look really cool, but if it is actually intended for training or it's those kinds of, you know, white guy speakers that we all kind of know. So it's really important to look at what is the cut of what you're wearing and how do you tie that shoe in and. There are a lot of great examples on, you know, places like Pinterest, magazines, a lot of celebrities wear kind of an elevated sneaker on a red carpet now, but elevated sneaker. That's a cool term! And that's true. You can look at resources out there. Absolutely. And I kind of, what do you think about the concept of. Personality and pulling things off because sometimes don't you feel like some people can get away with that and then other people put it on. And you're like, I think when you try to wear sneakers with a suit, you have to have like that definitely extrovert outgoing kind of personality to pull that off. Absolutely. You really have to own it. And when I say to my clients, when they, I really like to ask them, you know, what do you like, what do you like to wear? When, how do you feel most comfortable? And a lot of them say to me, you know, I don't know if I have the confidence to wear it and what I always say back to them. You know, if you really like something. Wear it, but you really have to own it. And so you really have to have that, that confidence behind what you're wearing. And on the flip side, if you don't like something don't wear it or don't buy it. That's, you know, that's absolute too. I don't even think about that because you can tell, especially men, like if they never wear a collared shirt and a tie and they're like at an outing and they have that. They look like somebody like hanging them. They're like pulling at it and they're moving their neck and head around. Like, they're like somebody get me out of this straight jacket soon. So that, that is true. So, what's a second thing people can do. So he had gym shoes. So the second don't that I always say, and I always see men out there doing this is wearing a backpack when  they're businessman. Wearing a backpack to carry all your files, whether it's your lunch or anything. There's so many beautiful briefcase options, kind of shoulder bag, and it's really. Great way to also, again, I'm all about elevating a is to elevate their look, to really look the part. If you're a CEO, you have the means to get a great briefcase or right. And I think it's important too, to look at the, yeah, I agree. I think when you got that full look, I think people look at you differently and you know, people say don't judge a book by a cover, but I'm sorry, BS on that. It just, is what it is and people do it, whether you want it to be that way or not. It is what it is. And that's what the whole fashion industry and Hollywood are all about. fashSo yeah have your whole put together. I don't see that very much, but I got that image in my head and I'm like, yeah, that would look really bad. I think I felt, so you think about the pandemic and a lot of people are very casual and you know what they normally might not wear. They did where, and now they're tired of wearing these casual outfits. They're looking to say, how do I go back and be the best version of myself and what do I wear to do that? And I think just completing the look, whether it's a man or a woman having the right pieces to fill out that whole look is so simple. So you're not a proponent of the pajamas underneath the table and that golf shirt for zoom calls. I have to say, I may have done it. We got the dirt now. That's awesome. I know a lot of people do that and I've even seen people stand up and be humorous about it, which I think kudos that's that's cool, but it is a whole new era that we're dealing with. All right. Number three. Don't. So number three, I always tell my clients don't wear anything that's a bad fit. If you have done an edit to remove all of these pieces from your closet, you, you likely won't be able to write. So many of the time we have, we see pieces that are either too big they're too small. They're, they're old. And a great example of it is I see a lot of men wearing belts that are long past their prime. That they're crap is so true. Oh my gosh. And yeah, they, they like you take them off. They naturally make like a C you know, Absolutely. And then you see also where a lot of men haven't taken the time to go into their shoe person, and they've made their own holes. They were in a pinch and we certainly can understand, but that is a huge don't wear a belt that's past due.  Absolutely the belts and wallets I think are in that too. A lot of people take wallets out and they're like, okay, they're really past their prime. They needto get replaced. And you know what other one gets to me too. And I guess maybe because I have spent some time in New York city, and this was so accessible, which now that I live in the Atlanta suburbs, it's not so accessible, but shoes shining. I like wearing the shoes that are clean and polished, and there's nothing worse to me. And people throw on dress shoes that are full of dust on top, or they're all scraped up. And even women I've seen. With the heels, just look like their dog got at em and that does not look okay. And the other thing that I find and I've actually left comments on like videos, I did one the other day. Really cool dancer. He wore a a men's jacket. He's very young and I'm sure he had no idea, but men especially and I used to work in events and I used to do it there too. Men, some women do it in skirts, but men, especially with the the vents in their jackets, they don't clip the basting  stitch. That's just for packaging and getting it to the store, you need to clip that. You don't wear that out like that. And one lady I saw, she literally could hardly walk because she had this skirt , you know, the slit in the back was closed and she's like, oh, it's like, wow. There's no excuse because we had the internet. There's the land of YouTube. Like just spend 10 minutes. It's something you have to do every day. You got to get up and get dressed every day and you feel like you said, you feel really good when you get, you know, all your pieces lined up and you know, you look good and everybody knows when they look good. You know, you put something on. Get that extra energy! Comment to that. It's kind of in line with the belt. Tip is we all know Seinfeld and George Costanza and immense wallet. And I always say every week, take some time to clean out your wallet every week, because how it sits, whether you put it in the breast pocket of your suit or in your back pocket, it has a big effect on how the clothes look. So take that time to clean out your wallet. And it'll also be easier when. I purchased something. I think that's just a great hack for life just to get in the habit. Some people keep like two years worth of receipts in, in, on their person. And I'm just like, there's no need for that.  And when you pull that out in public, I just don't think it sets a good look either. And it's like, I'm disorganized, I don't have any kind of system in place here, but that is a very good point. And I appreciate that. And so, okay. Hopefully our listeners. Have some tactics here to utilize for their holiday wear and go to those parties, looking a little sharper. Tell us a little information about how our listeners can get ahold of you. They can go to my website @ sarahdarcy.com and I have a contact me field there. They can also email me at  Sarah @Sarah Darcy. And I'd be glad to help anyone that's listening. That's awesome. So my last question is my signature question. If there is one thing in this world that you could eliminate forever, what would it be and why? If there was one thing I would eliminate, I thought about this a lot and because this is my industry and I'm very passionate about this is I would eliminate fast fashion. Fast fashion. That's a new one for me. You always have fast food but fast fashion. So explain what that is. So that is companies that are using an ethical practices to create garments, whether that's the, the, how they're producing the clothes the materials they're using, the unethical labor practices that they are using. I really believe that fast fashion has such a effect on consumerism and also our environment. And we're seeing, especially now such a, a crisis with the environment. And so I just really believe in supporting local business people using ethical practices. My whole mantra is to create and curate a closet of fewer better things. So quality over quantity. And that's also another tip that people can use for their holiday ware. And so not having all those practices and all of those clothes that spend so much time in landfills, like  so much clothing goes to landfills and. That's true. That's true. I always tried to donate my clothing and there's an orphanage, not too far. With COVID, it's been a little bit problematic, but there are people out there who could use clothing who have nothing. So yeah, please always donate. I love that idea. Actually when I had a corporate job, I did a thing and I think it was called Dress For Success and yeah, and we pulled together all usedclothing that was corporate or business oriented. So like belts and suits and dresses and things like that. And high heel shoes  and whatnot and, and did like a fair and also had people come and we help them with their resumes, and interviewing skills. It was really cool. But yeah, I am a firm believer in recycling it's just a good idea. Like you say, there's no reason to fill the landfills like that. I love it. Oh, Sarah, you've been a wealth of information and I hope everyone can take these tidbits that you offered. Through their holiday parties and the holiday season, even for themselves, even if you don't go to a party, just do it for you. It's always better to overdress than underdressed, that's always my theory. A lot of times people like you don't have to get dressed up for this and I'm like, I don't get out much. I'm going to get dressed up in here. Absolutely. I love to wear sequence out just in the day. There you go. Alright, so I'm good. Then I'm going to call you up for my, my comradery here. Thank you so much. And I just want all our listeners to remember life has no remote. Get up and change it yourself.

MM M&A 003: Due Diligence - Uncovering the Skeletons in Your Closet

Middle Market Mergers and Acquisitions by Colonnade Advisors

In this episode, Gina Cocking and Jeff Guylay discuss business due diligence.  Due diligence is so important in any M&A transaction that we're devoting four episodes to the topic. Please stay tuned for upcoming episodes 004 through 006 about Due Diligence.  In addition to business due diligence, we'll cover financial, legal, and technology-related aspects of due diligence. Here are two key points from the discussion on business diligence in today's episode: 1) Organization is crucial in this process; every document will be requested, every question will be asked. 2) Prepare so that there are no surprises; every rock will be overturned.  Essentially, a seller needs to tell their advisors the good, the bad, and the ugly. You’ll see why we’ve named this episode “Uncovering the Skeletons in Your Closet”. This episode features guest Rob Humble to provide his insights from his involvement with transactions as both the buyer and seller. Rob is the Senior Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development at IAS.  In this episode, Gina and Jeff of Colonnade Advisors address the following questions: What is due diligence? (02:18) The process of working with the management of a company and, at a very high level, learning everything that possibly can be learned about the company. Colonnade Advisors turns over every rock to understand all of the strengths and weaknesses of the company, understanding both the past, present, and future. We understand why the company does certain things, what the contracts say, and what its obligations are. We do an assessment so that when the buyer or a lender comes in, they know what they're getting into. What is examined during due diligence? (02:48) Employee records, contracts, financials, lawsuits, marketing plans, training manuals, handbooks, analyzing turnover, customer concentration, unit economics, etc. All the skeletons in the closet, everything about the business. How does due diligence affect the Purchase Agreement? (04:41) A large component of the purchase agreement is the reps and warranties section, where the seller represents that everything they have shown and shared with the buyer is true and correct, etc. The legal agreement, the purchase agreement, governs the transaction and the future. What is a confidential information memorandum (CIM)? Jeff Guylay:  “When I think about the CIM, the confidential information memorandum, or the book, that's really a mix of disclosure, risk, and market business and how great is this company and what are the future prospects... also what's happened in the past and what are the risks for a future buyer, going forward.” Who is involved in due diligence? (08:13) Gina Cocking: “It’s handled by a number of people. If it's a private equity firm, the private equity firm team members are very knowledgeable and will ask a lot of questions in the business diligence segment. There will also be consultants that are hired from time to time, specialized consultants that understand the industry or the specific product that's being done, or sometimes they're HR consultants or specific marketing-types consultants.” What happens first in Colonnade’s due diligence process? (08:55) Jeff: “When we get hired to work with a client, the first thing we do is put together a due diligence request list and a data (request) list. We get together with the company, and we spend the better part of a day, and sometimes a day and a half, going through our lists and just asking question after question after question.”  What is the purpose of Colonnade’s due diligence? (09:35) Jeff: “The point of us going through and asking all these questions is to put our investor hat on or our buyer hat on and ask 90% or 95% of the questions that they (the buyer and/or investor) are going to ask. We want to make sure that we have all the right answers...before they're required by a buyer, and we want to make sure the story is consistent.” What if there are skeletons in the closet? (10:10) Jeff: “If there are any problems, let's hear about it now, because the worst thing you want, as we've talked about, is to have surprises later on or something come up at the last minute that can kill a deal or have a major change in pricing or terms.” Gina (10:34): “I'm your business confessor, for all the ugly and dirty and you-wanted-to-hide-it-under-the-bed (items; it's) time to talk about it because it will come out later, and the worst thing is to not be prepared for when that happens, so we need to know everything.” The advisor-client relationship is one of trust. What are the first questions asked when kicking off Colonnade’s diligence session with a new client, and how do those questions add to the story? (12:49) When and where was the company formed? What is the corporate history? What are the major operating entities? What are they doing, what's the purpose of them? Is there any tail liability that we should be thinking about or carving out? Why are these questions important in the due diligence process? (13:51) Gina: “Everybody remembers a story. It's great to hear the owner's story because we often are retelling their story later on.” Jeff (14:36): “When we launch into the market..we're the front line of communications. We're expected to be able to answer 90% or 95% of the initial questions that come through. We're telling the story, and the (Colonnade) diligence process is meant to educate us, to make sure that we're as fully informed about the history and the prospects of the company as possible.” What are some of the legal aspects of the diligence process? (15:00) Gina: “Not only do we have the different legal entities, but we also have different tax structures, sometimes they're C-corps, sometimes they're S-corps, and so you have all these different legal entities, all these different tax structures.” Jeff (17:21): “This is usually where we request the name and contact information of the attorney. If you have ten entities and there is no holding company, we should probably do some leg work ahead of time and clean things up. I know we've done that on a number of deals.” (Please note that the Middle Market Mergers & Acquisitions podcast will dedicate an entire aspect to the legal aspects of due diligence) What kinds of documents are requested in the due diligence process? (18:16) Gina:  “We're going to ask for all the formation documents, operating agreements, shareholder agreements, articles of incorporation, the state articles of incorporation, that can be three or four documents per legal entity... “ Jeff (19:10): “In addition to the shareholder documentation, we're looking for board minutes, board packages, (and) all the corporate organizational materials that have been accumulated throughout the years.” What important business aspects tend to come up during the diligence process? (20:32) Gina: “An important component of any transaction is customer concentration. That has a big impact on valuation, and there's a very logical reason as to why. If a customer represents a lot of the company’s revenues, the buyer's concern is, ‘Wow, what if that customer walks? What if you lose that customer?’ And then I just bought a company and it has 60% of the revenues that I thought it had. There are a number of PE firms... where their fund will say, ‘We cannot buy a company that has customer concentration of greater than 20% for one customer or 60% for the top three customers." Jeff (22:17): “The next topic we cover when we're talking about revenue is the sales force, so sales and marketing in general. We get a good picture of what they're selling and who they're selling to, and now the question is how are they selling? Do you have a direct sales force? Is it a channel strategy? What are the different ways that this company goes to market, and how are they selling stuff?”  What are some other questions that come up during business due diligence? (22:57) Jeff: “How do you pay your sales force? What sort of non-solicitation or non-compete agreements do you have with your sales force?  How institutionalized are the relationships? How long have they been around?”  Gina (24:29): “A (common) situation is when the buyer says, ‘I would like to speak to the end customer.’  We often get into discussions with the buyers about when those conversations will happen. Jeff (25:27): “The other thing I would comment on in sales and marketing is getting a sense of competitors, so what does the competitive landscape look like? (26:02): Part of the go-to-market discussion is how are you going to market against your competitors? So, what are they doing differently than you? How do you compete against them? And how are you going to win?”  Gina (27:00): “The next area that we start looking into is marketing channels and marketing partners. Clients sometimes have a partnership where they are co-marketing with another entity. We get really excited about marketing partnerships. It's not necessarily because there are a lot of sales coming through those channels, but because of the validation that they give to the company.” Gina (28:38): “The other side of sales is the cost of goods sold. Who are your vendors? We're going to look into all of your vendor relationships.” (29:32): “We will take a look at the pricing from the vendors. We'll be looking at the contract terms with the vendors.”  Gina invites Rob Humble, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development at IAS, who shares his perspectives from both the buy and sell sides as related to business due diligence. Gina: “How do you stay organized and keep the process moving quickly?” (32:10) Rob: “It's definitely like herding cats.  Upwards of 100 people, between advisors and internal folks. I believe, fundamentally, that time kills deals; so you have to be as efficient as possible.” It really comes down to two fundamental points in the process: 1) Preparation (Pre-game) 2) Truly committing to the sale process (Game on). “(Pre-game) we literally took our own medicine, and it took us a few months of answering our own questions before we had a data room that we felt was full. You can be much more strategic about the way that you present (the information) in your sales material, and you can also be more strategic about the rate and timing of when you release those documents. We used the diligence checklist that we use for the buying process...for creating our own internal data room.” Gina: “I think one of the biggest problems that companies run into is trying to stay the course and do their day job (running the business) while going through a sale process without all the wheels falling off the bus.” (34:00) Rob: “There are three components (to our success) that come to mind: 1) Designate a leader of the process. The best person for this is that utility player that is great at coordinating across the team and ensuring the organization is really given the attention that it deserves. You need a utility player that knows the organization, knows the people, knows the data, knows the system, and can run point for you. 2) Form a team that meets every week. That's a cross-functional team with the players that have access to the data systems and decision-making authority that you need to answer questions and have them be supported by the evidence that will ultimately get dug up in later diligence.  3) Follow a clear process. We were very careful. Gina:  “You did quite a few acquisitions over the last four or five years. But you were also involved in the sale of IAS. How did it feel to be in the hot seat? I mean, the tables were turned.” (39:00) Rob (39:17): “I loved it.  A sales process, at the end of the day, is just telling a story and supporting that story with evidence to make it as believable and credible as you possibly can. I loved the process of understanding what our story is, building the dataset to support that story, and then going out and telling the story.”  Gina: “Now, looking back on all that you've done, is there one piece of advice you would give to someone that is getting ready to go through an M&A process?” (40:07) Rob (40:36): “Get the right advisors.”  About Our Guest Rob Humble leads strategy and corporate development for IAS. Are there places in your life where you could really use the Lord's help? Doing this exercise will show you exactly where God wants to do the work with you that will level up your life:  Step 1. Think of your life as your home and each part of you is a room. Let’s walk through the house together, and as we do, ask yourself if God has been pointing anything out in this room. Kitchen: Has he been talking to you about making better food choices, or are you struggling with disordered eating, overeating, undereating, or maybe even numbing yourself with food?  Office: Are you hearing anything about a business He’s put on your heart, your current job, trusting Him for a new job, or perhaps how you spend your money? Bathroom: When you look in the mirror, do you see what He sees, or do you struggle with getting dressed or your body image? Do you shame a part of your body? Do you show off a part of your body? Bedroom: Is God talking to you about your marriage or intimacy? Or even oversleeping or under sleeping? Kids' rooms:  Are you praying for a baby, or wanting to be a better role model for your kids, or maybe start teaching them more about God?  Living room: Think of tv/music/entertainment. Is there any entertainment that isn't in line with your Christian values? Dining room: Think about fellowship, who are you surrounding yourself with? Are there any toxic relationships that don’t fit who you are in Christ? Or are there any friends or family you should invite over? Lastly, Your Closet, Are there any deep secrets or broken places that you shove down every day: old hurts, guilt, anger from the loss of a loved one, failed marriages, or pain from rejection? These unspeakable painful places are where only Jesus can heal.  Step 2. identify if you are running from God or toward Him in this area of your life. If you are running to God, wonderful! In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Ash speaks with Tami Simon on how anyone can be a positive culture worker in even the smallest moments. Ash explains why she refers to herself as an “accidental activist,” tying this into the theme of her seminal TEDx Talk—that everyone keeps parts of themselves in the closet. Tami and Ash consider how to apply the lessons of Step Up to everyday social difficulties, as well as the “eight pillars of leadership” that lead to effective, heartful communication. Finally, they discuss the value of authenticity and what it truly means to live courageously.

Ep 039 | Finding Confidence in Your Closet with Jennifer Mackey-Mary   Jennifer Mackey-Mary isn't just a stylist, it's her business to make you feel confident in your clothes and to teach you how to do more with less. Jennifer admits that clothes aren't her passion, but seeing what she can do to help other women is definitely her purpose. She offers virtual styling sessions and amazing seasonal capsule wardrobe ebooks that not only show you what to wear but different ways to wear it and where you can find each piece. If you're ready to work on what you wear, then you don't want to miss this episode because you are going to learn exactly what you need to do to start finding confidence in your clothes.    It's not about the dress, it's about the life you live in the dress!   What we're talking about   Finding Confidence In Your Clothes What Is A Capsule Wardrobe? Don't Forget The Finishing Touches   Finding Confidence In Your Clothes   If you are wondering where to start when it comes to wardrobe styling, Jennifer's advice is to find a perfect pair of jeans and the right size bra. The right bra can make you look taller, leaner, younger and can take 10 lbs and 10 years off you instantly. Who wouldn't want that?! The truth is that you don't have to dress up to look stylish and polished, you can keep it casual as long as you find the right pieces in the right sizes.    What Is A Capsule Wardrobe?   Jennifer creates capsule wardrobes which are a collection of pieces that she then creates outfits out of. Her Winter capsule is 34 pieces that create 184 outfits, complete with tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, jewelry, accessories and more. The trick that Jennifer teaches women is that you can absolutely do more with less and don't need hundreds or thousands of pieces of clothing in your closet.    Don't Forget The Finishing Touches   One thing Jennifer says many of us are missing these days is the finishing touches to our outfits. Some great tips Jennifer offers are to remember to wear a belt, add jewelry, roll up your sleeves and pop your collar. Not only do these things finish off an outfit, but they can also create slimming effects on your body which is always a good thing!  Let's get styled!    LINKS MENTIONED Jennifer's Website Jennifer's Instagram Jennifer's Facebook The Everyday Style School Podcast TIMESTAMPS 4:35 (34 sec JM) – I believe that we've gotten a little bit less narrow-minded about what fashion is and it's more about style and the fact it, there are just so many more options that are available to us, so when you look at even shopping, I don't know if you remember this, school shopping as a kid. You did it in August because that's when you bought your sweater and you wore sweaters to the 1st day of school and you just like were sweating the whole time. That sweater was there in August, got replenished in September and November all the way through the season. There were 4 seasons of fashion. Now there are 12. 18:41 (59 sec JM) – I create capsule wardrobe ebooks. It's a digital download that shows women how to put together a mix and match wardrobe every season. So I take 34 pieces, we combine them to track I think this is one that's coming out real soon for winter is like 184 outfits and we show them the tops, the bottoms, the dresses, the shoes, the jewelry, the accessories, everything they need. Then we give people shopping links where to buy them, in spend links, save links, petite and plus and then we show them all the outfit combinations. So you know, let's say you want to try a really trendy piece for the season, like a leopard midi skirt. I would love to put this in my wardrobe but I have no idea what to do with that. We have a page in the capsule guide that shows you like 20 different ways to style your leopard midi, so I really wanted women to put together every mix and match that's effortlessly stylish wardrobe, but it turns out stylish is not effortless.      QUOTES I love what clothes do for women.
