Yesterday morning was the first time in a long time I debated skipping my morning workout. Of course, I take rest days during the week. But, this was not intended to be one of those. For today's episode of 5-MINUTE FRIDAY, I'm talking you through what went through my head, and how I've put in a place a fool-proof routine to keep me on track when it comes to my a.m. sweat. Plus: Offering up my five best-practice tips. PROMPT: What's one thing you can add to your morning routine that'll make your day better? On Monday's episode of Hurdle with Tunde Oyeneyin, we talked about the idea that progress is rarely linear. On your journey to success, whatever that looks like for you, there will be tough times. I’ve learned that both the highs and lows bring us lessons — lessons that help us progress. And while the tough stuff may be more difficult to navigate, these moments happen to teach us something. One “bad” day doesn’t rid you of the wins that came before. It informs you of how to better show up the next, and the next one after that, on the continuous quest for progress. Today, I'm talking about my progress as a runner, and how the not-so-stellar days are an important piece of the puzzle on my journey. In last night's Hurdle Session, we had a really special conversation about navigating life post-injury. I knew that I needed to share my sentiments on it on the feed. Injuries, and all of life's hurdles, are tough. They make us feel like we're not good enough, and it's hard to figure out the "right" way to move forward. Even harder (sometimes), when you're "back" to yourself, life and things that used to feel easy feel ... not. I've been there. I get it. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."Down the hill from my home is a boy who has been growing into a teenager. I’ve watched him playing hoops in the driveway against a backboard nailed to the garage. When he was younger he would practice setting up each shot, one by one: a lay-up, a bank shot, maybe a free throw. Over time he began to master a jump shot, even a slam dunk. He practiced until the moves became second nature. I’ve been thinking about him as I continue to wrestle with the voices in my head having righteous, opinionated, judgmental conversations with my decidedly wretched neighbor and her equally wretched aunt. And then I catch myself. Minutes or more of my life have been squandered churning over what I should have said, could have said. Is this the way I want to live the time that’s left to me? So, I practice with the intention that compassion and loving kindness might become second nature. Will it take a lifetime? I don’t know. I’ve not yet lived a lifetime. I can tell you this though: I’m definitely scoring more baskets! Swish!Prompt: What are you practicing that’s beginning to pay off, become second nature? Write that story! Practical Tip: Share your story with someone or something: your journal, your animal companion, the trees in the woods, friends, companions, master mind group. All that matters is you practice and share the story. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. The moments before the run are big. Monumental, even. I argue, the most important part. They're slightly anxious, a little excited, and often hesitant. During those give-or-take 30 seconds where you’re debating initiating the actual effort, oftentimes you encounter some sort of minuscule annoyance, like the fact that your watch isn’t picking up a GPS signal or perhaps a wonky, unsettled feeling in your right knee. In these moments, you make the valuable, conscious decision to do something for you. To believe in your own potential. You accept whatever comes with the miles and minutes that follow. It’s a bold act, to open yourself up to the beauty that can come hand-in-hand with wanting to take this time for yourself. I'm talking about this for today's 5-MINUTE FRIDAY. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with several questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."How often have we heard or said at home, in the workplace, in school, “It’s just not fair!” It’s happened to everyone.Someone took my parking space - ghosted me - dissed my opinion - someone took my idea, my promotion, my turn, my client, my business - someone said I did something when I didn’t .....and so on. In April I was in a really bad place. Emotionally and physically. On the 10th of that month, I shared a story on Instagram about going into my kitchen 14 different times in one day. I was using food to cope with my problems, and I wasn't feeling good. I wrote about it some for SHAPE. Stepping on the scale was the final straw, reminding me of a difficult college #hurdlemoment, and thus began a lot of inner work trying to get to a better place. Journaling. Talking. Therapy. Strengthening. Less judgement. More acceptance. Setting boundaries. Better interactions. Now, a couple months later, I'm really proud of my progress. But here's the thing: No one's reaching out to me and commenting about my attitude. What I'm hearing, from friends and complete strangers alike, are comments on my appearance. Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with several questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories."Once, upon a time there lived a woodcutter and his wife. He cut wood in the forest and she grew vegetables; together they sold the food and firewood in the market. The couple longed for a family but still had no children. The woodcutter’s elderly and ailing mother lived with them. And, when winter came there was little food or wood or money. The woodcutter’s wife was worried. To clear her thoughts she wrapped a small chunk of bread, a rind of cheese and a dried apple in a cloth, tucked it in a pocket and set out into the snowy woods. Stopping in a clearing she was startled to see an old crone dressed in a thread-bare cloak, her feet wrapped in rags. Reaching out a twisted hand she asked: "Would you have a crust of bread or bit of cheese to share?"This was about all the woodcutter’s wife had and would have lied but for the look of hunger in the old woman’s face. She undid the cloth and offered half. When the meager meal was done the crone disappeared and in her place was the Queen of the Winter North resplendent in white furs with ice crystals for a crown. “You have been kind to me, a stranger, and so I will grant you 1 wish if you return here in 3 days’ time.” And then she was gone. The woodcutter’s wife was more distressed than ever before. How to choose: a family, work and food, her ailing mother-in-law. Over and over she turned the choices. What to do? How to choose? Who to choose? What would you do?On the 3rd day she walked back to the clearing in the woods where the Queen of the Winter North appeared as before. “What is your 1 wish?”"I wish, said the woodcutter’s wife, that my mother-in-law will live long enough to see her 3 grandchildren eating with silver spoons.""As you wish, it is done and so it shall be."Prompt: What are you wishing for? My 32nd birthday’s next week. With June 2 on the horizon, I’ve been doing a decent amount of reflection. I’ve stopped to think about the past 365 days. For the past couple years, I’ve been running with other journalists and members of the media on Thursday mornings out of Nike’s New York headquarters. When the coronavirus pandemic struck, the #mediamiles group was put on hold. But as May approached, we were presented with the challenge of logging 50 miles solo (and of course, at a safe social distance) on the Nike Run Club app. At first, dealing with injury, I felt scared. I was worried about not doing it to the "best of my ability," and missing out on this time with my friends that have come to feel like family. Today for 5-Minute Friday, I’m talking about the journey, and how I’m #betterforit. PROMPT: What’s one thing you don’t want to do this week that could positively impact you in the long run? What can you learn from checking a tough to-do off your list? SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW HURDLE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER (!) Get ready for a really theoretical episode! On this episode Nick and Zak welcome their friend Alex Whiteclay of Commander Manifesto to discuss an alternate universe for Commander. The Prompt - What if you could only make mana of your Commander's color identity, but could put any card in your deck? This discussion leads to a lot of places. It highlights a lot of strengths and weaknesses in the format as it is, and lets us look at some decks that would get more love than they do currently. (We don't get to this point on air, but it very much would require Wizards to reprint staples, something that they should be doing more of anyway. It's a conclusion you'll probably draw too as a listener.) If you’re doing this whole quarantine thing solo, you think you want company — until that company is a mouse. For 5-Minute Friday this week, I’m telling you the story about my run-in with an unwanted four-legged guest, and the important reminder it gave me about letting go of the things I can’t control. PROMPT: What is something, aside from this pandemic, that you have zero control over that you need to let go of? What is giving you stress that you could release? What is your “mouse,” per say? Welcome to 5-Minute Fridays, a new segment from Hurdle where I share a quick story, offer you a prompt that makes you think, and share a few of my top highlights of the week — whether that’s a podcast, an app, a streaming workout, a quote — you get the idea. PLEASE, let me know what you think. Do you like this? What do you want to hear about? This week: Are you struggling with how things were “supposed” to be? Hey, I feel you. Two months ago, coronavirus wasn't here. I was celebrating Valentine's Day with a glass of wine with my best friend at my favorite restaurant, surrounded by dozens of people. And now? We're wearing masks the moment we walk outside of our homes and can't go within 6 feet of another person. I’m here to tell you that it’s OK to feel let down, sharing a story about something tough I'm going through personally. The catch: Make sure you do this one critical thing, and keep looking forward.
