Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3H5Ye2BvUk Notes: Power of the Story - Lessons from Pixar Marketing has shifted from running ad campaigns to social media. This requires connection with followers who may become your customers. But, how do you connect? The connection is made thru your content, and how your followers engage and enjoy it. Or reject and ignore it. Human Beings have engaged with stories for a millennium or longer. Good content = good story telling. Understanding that people want to connect with people and a good narrative. Now you need to learn how to tell a story. There's a company you can study that does a pretty good job at it, goes by the name Pixar. There are elements to every good story, and sometimes even a guide to how it's done. Here are Pixar's rules... Pixar's 22 Rules of Storytelling These rules were originally tweeted by Emma Coates, Pixar's Story Artist. Number nine on the list — when you're stuck, make a list of what wouldn't happen next — is a great one and can apply to writers in all genres. 1. You admire a character for trying more than for their successes. 2. You gotta keep in mind what's interesting to you as an audience, not what's fun to do as a writer. They can be very different. 3. Trying for theme is important, but you won't see what the story is actually about 'til you're at the end of it. Now rewrite. 4. Once up on a time there was _____. Every day, _____. One day _____. Because of that, _____. Because of that, _____. Until finally, _____. 5. Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You'll feel like you're losing valuable stuff but it sets you free. 6. What is your character good at, comfortable with? Throw the polar opposite at them. Challenge them. How do they deal? FULL LIST: HERE Apparently there's a Rule 23: Rule #23: There are no Rules except Rule #23. This is all really important to keep in mind as you create your stories; rules are often accumulated wisdom from generations of people learning what works and what doesn't. But in a creative field, sticking only to the rules is staid and boring. Find out how they came up with Rule 23: HERE Rule of Three (3) is Everywhere What do a Play, Chess Game, Magic Trick & The Slogan in the Declaration of Independence all have in Common? Play – 3 Acts, Setup, the Confrontation, & the Resolution Chess Game – 3 Phases, Opening, Middlegame, Endgame Magic Trick – 3 Parts, Pledge, Turn, Prestige Declaration of Independence – 3 Word Slogan, Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness Do you see a pattern? ‘Omne trium perfectum' - from Latin, means ‘Everything that comes in Threes (3) is Perfect' Rule of Three (3) People look for patterns, and three things is the smallest amount to have for a pattern. The Rule of Three has a natural feel to it, since it is so engrained in so many things we commonly see. People can typically remember 3 or 4 things, so a shorter list does not confuse. Complex Ideas, Stories, or Events broken down into 3s is more Memorable & Effective. I believe there is also something subconscious we like with simple math. Math and geometry underpin many things (design, architecture, city planning, etc), so we see it, but do not see it. How widespread is the Rule of Three? Why was Voltes V banned in the Philippines during Martial Law? Concerns about the effects of violence on children, said the official statement. Perhaps the mecha anime's theme of young resistance fighters battling an oppressive regime hit too close to home for the censors, others opined. Stories have power, as we discuss with Laurianne Uy, a storyboard artist and comic creator from Manila, Philippines now based in LA whose work has appeared in film, TV, print, and online. She started drawing comics about her favorite characters in 1997 and also served as art editor for her high school and college newspapers. Laur went on to major in History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in and wrote her honors thesis on manga and female representation. In 2012, she won a Xeric grant and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for her self-published young adult comic series "Polterguys." She successfully deployed her lifelong passion for drawing and storytelling to a career in animation by 2017. She is currently a Story Artist for Skydance Animation, and has also worked as a Storyboard Artist for DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Titmouse, Wild Canary Animation, Activision, and Soapbox Films. She has worked on storyboard animation for properties such as Star Trek, Madagascar, Cleopatra in Space, Deathstroke, and Puss in Boots. She gets real about being lost in her twenties, finding her way back to her first love of drawing, turning down movie offers to adapt her comics, how the manga and anime fandom went mainstream, as well as universal advice on the dangers of burnout and the importance of boundaries between our personal and professional lives. This episode is dedicated to all artists making their voices heard and standing up for truth in darkness... and to all our Filipino listeners who showed up at the polls on May 9. Representation matters, as Laur said. Stories matter, too -- and we are still writing our collective story as a nation. We hope this episode (recorded in 2021) brings you joy in these times. --- Follow Laur on Twitter (@Laurbits) or visit her website laurbits.com View her portfolio at https://laurbits.weebly.com/ Read her YA graphic novel "Polterguys" at laurbits.com/Polterguys or polterguys.laurbits.com --- Other topics discussed: Voltes V https://www.spot.ph/entertainment/movies-music-tv/83558/voltes-v-martial-law-explainer-a4362-20200913-lfrm Philippine Animation Industry https://businessmirror.com.ph/2018/04/02/animation-and-the-filipino/ https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Creator/FilCartoons https://www.animationcareerreview.com/articles/top-20-cities-worldwide-animation-careers Intellectual Property Suits https://bleedingcool.com/comics/comic-books-and-the-law-talking-with-michael-lovitz-about-ips-and-sdcc/ https://www.cbr.com/unpacking-the-kirby-reclamation-case/ Oni Press https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_Pre Penny Arcade https://nwasianweekly.com/2014/01/lifes-game-leap-faith-turns-comic-strip-successful-gaming-company/ https://www.geekwire.com/2016/penny-arcades-robert-khoo-steps-15-years-helm/ --- Music: “Neon Laser Horizon” by Kevin MacLeod (imcompetech.com) licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License Sound Editing by franticsong Like what you heard? We're kicking off season 2 with a name you may find familiar: Ray Mendoza Landa! A story artist at Warner Bros. Animation and one of the co-hosts of Straight Ahead! Although Ray has only just started his career, he has a plethora of experiences: story artist on a 3D show with a blender-integrated pipeline, interning at Pixar, acting as President for the Shrunken Headman Club, and heading the ambitious animated graphic novel, Sol Naciente. We may have touched on these topics in the past, but Ray is able to go in-depth in a way we normally don't get the chance to when interviewing a guest. We also go into Ray's path into animation, how he was always more into theatre than art, and how his interest in his own culture as a Mexican-American has grown. Of course, we answer the most important question: would you rather attain power through hard work in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber from Dragonball Z or by instantly seeing the secret of the Universe like in Full Metal Alchemist? Sidney Riley is a songwriter and singer originally from Washington, D.C. He has been involved with music since childhood. At age 9, he learned to play the piano and discovered his passion for singing as a cast member of “Children's Choice,” a popular children's British television show, filmed in the Middle East. Later, he started an a cappella group and began writing original music and had the opportunity to sing at the Kennedy Center Honors with Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. His passion for music and songwriting continues today. His personal achievements are nothing short of miraculous. During his senior year of high school, he fell critically ill with a rare disease that had him fighting for his life in a coma for several months, overcoming a 1% chance to live. He was told he would never walk again. After many months of rehab, which included re-learning how to walk again, Sidney shocked his friends and family when he walked unassisted across the graduation stage, with the full chamber choir by his side. Shortly after, he made a full recovery, moved to New York City for college, and graduated from Fordham University. Sidney credits his recovery in part to the role music played in his life by keeping him motivated through that difficult time and giving him a sense of purpose. Since then, Sidney has made music his priority. He is currently involved in several projects for himself, as well as other artists from various genres, and he is always working to collaborate and expand upon his portfolio. We had the amazing opportunity to sit down and get to know Sidney Riley better, and we cannot wait to share his amazing story of perseverance, strength, and hope. Riley is a storyteller whose music feels both relatable and whimsical while it has you hitting repeat as you dance around the kitchen daydreaming about your next big move. Sidney Riley's music, such as "Villian" and "Exposure" are available everywhere now, and Riley can be followed on Instagram @IamSidneyRiley. https://confessionalmagazine.com*25% of all income made by Confessional Magazine via donations and elsewhere goes directly towards Felicia Merritt's journey with Multiple Sclerosis.
